Great reply AmyAus, also remember to bring about 20 passport photos, as most CVs require them and you seem to need them for just about everything else here!

I did it a couple of months ago and no I didn't need the paper bit. Remember if you go home to UK and try and rent a car you do have to show the paper bit though, Which makes me think What was the point of changing the system! Ended up using my dubai licence in UK to rent car as they wouldn't take my British one. Whenever I've gone back and rented a car, the company has always used my UAE licence as apparently you have to use the licence from the country you are resident in or it invalidates the insurance - or so they said! That's been Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar and Europcar, but I was a bit surprised the first time as I just thought I'd use the UK one but fortunately had my UAE one on me so all was well :)

I have a friend who has hired teachers from school to look after their kids in the afternoon. Another one has found a teacgher from a nursery to do this as well...this seems to me to be one of the best solutions, what do you think ? they have just put an ad on websites and at schools... I'm amazed that any teacher has time to take on childminding in the afternoon - all the ones I have ever worked with have been flat out organising the next day's lessons, marking, running after school clubs, attending meetings etc. etc. And their employer would certainly need to be made aware of this to issue a No Objection letter.

When she does "Number Twos" does she always wipe front to back - could be just a bacterial infection if she doesn't wipe too well - my DDs had this, so had to role model :) :) :)

Also check out Grand Midwest Tower, Media City - it's right next to Internet City metro. They have 2 bedroom apartments, rates about same as Gloria.

American hospital is halfway between Oud Metha and Healthcare City stops on the green line. Take the red line to Khalid bin al Waleed and transfer onto the green line going towards Creek. As it's cool it would be about a 15 min walk from either, or else a 10dhs taxi fare.

OP: Hiltonia is the name of the Beach Club attached to Hilton Abu Dhabi, the actual hotel name is still Hilton Abu Dhabi :) No idea if Baniyaun or Corniche have shuttles, sorry, but HAD definitely does.

I know the Hilton Abu Dhabi (the one just over the bridge from Marina Mall) run a shuttle bus most mornings to the mosque but I don't know if it's only for their guests - you could ring and ask them though.

The Etihad bus picks up from Dubai Marina Mall which is handy if you're in JLT. Ask at the Eithad office near WAitrose for times.

Bus (E101) leaves IBN at 6am, 7.30 and 9, right outside metro station, by RTA hut. Fare is 20 dhs there, 15 dhs back. Takes between 1.5-2 hrs direct to AD bus station. Ladies and family seating in front as per normal buses. Fully airconditioned, very comfortable, to be recommended! HTH.

Here's a review of some of the ones available... I'm not sure where you'd buy them in Dubai, but id recommend buying one if you have any more than an hour of tape you want to convert. http://vhs-to-dvd-converters-review.toptenreviews.com/ FYI. I bought the Elgato one and was very happy with it. We went hunting for one of the PC cable ones at the weekend but no luck - tried Times Square, Deira and Ibn Battuta but all told us they used to get them from LG but had had no stock for six months. We're still looking, so if anyone does see one, please post on here! TIA

I just logged onto online banking with HSBC, but my old account number is showing, even though I've registered and been given an IBAN no. Has anyone else had this happen? Don't want my salary to get rejected what with Christmas coming up!

Thank you so much DGIT - I wonder why HSBC didn't actually notify its customers? It looks like the IBAN code is just an across the board one with loads of zeros, followed by your old account number, but I would never have known to do this unless you'd posted - so at least my salary payment won't get bounced thank goodness.

Just a thought but why not take them out to the Birds of Prey Show? We went back in March and it was fantastic, you get up close and personal with falcons, snow owls, etc. and the presenters are fantastic - it is a breeding facility too for the birds. There are vouchers in the family Entertainment Book - from memory I think the show starts at 4pm. Here's the link http://birdsofprey-show-dubai.jimdo.com/

The Intercontinental is nice and v. close to the beach, and almost next door there is a small Sheraton, the Al Qurm resort, right on the beach, nice pool too. Both are next to a little shopping mall with some very good, reasonably priced restaurants, including a licensed Italian, I think it might be called Il Sole Mio. It's a nice part of town, taxi rank at mall, even a WH Smith (tiny) where you can buy Daily Mail, though they are usually about 3 days old lol.

Lolita77, my advice to you would be to talk to the school again - even if they don't have a LEarning Support Unit or ELC, one of the teachers or one of the management team should have responsibility for any additional learning needs, whether social, academic, language etc. In the UK these teachers have undergone extra training for just this purpose, but I know that may not be the case at your son's school. Even so, it is important for all concerned that any additional person who is brought in to lend support works with your DS in a team with his teacher, the ethos of the school, the curriculum, etc. etc. It is very unfair of them to just tell you to just find a shadow teacher yourself, as whoever eventually you or they choose has to be the right 'fit', work the hours that work for your DS's class and all sorts of other criteria. If you have only so far spoken to the teacher it is time to escalate this up to the management - they accepted your child into the school so they now have a responsibility to make this work, and he may be better suited to a different teacher, or worst case scenario, a different school, but you shouldn't be under this pressure as a parent, particularly one paying big money to the school. Good luck!

Depends what job you're going for, but most jobs here are happy with English - I'm on job number four and have never been asked for a No Objection letter in Arabic. Mine just reads as follows: DH postal address and email address Date To whom it may concern (or the company you are going to be working for) I, DH name, Emirates ID card no. 1234567 (or passport no. and visa no.) have no objection to my wife Your Name, Emirates ID card no. (or passport no. and visa no.) taking up employment in the UAE (or insert your company name). DH signature DH name - typed Attach copies of both ID cards, or both passport and visas HTH

There's quite a few private tutoring places in Knowledge Village, mostly in Block 13. Friends have used Power Tutoring and been pleased with results, but there are others there too. It might pay to just go down after school and pop in and see a few of them in action. Good luck!

A worker who has completed one or more years of continuous service shall be entitled to severance pay at the end of his employment. The days of absence from work without pay shall not be included in calculating the period of service. The severance pay shall be calculated as follows: 1. 21 days' wage for each of the first five years of service. 2. 30 days’ wage for each additional year of service provided always that the aggregate amount of severance pay should not exceed two year's wage. MonkeyFace, this does not apply across the board. It depends on the employer - my DH has a totally different rule in place, as do I, and signed contracts with employers are binding.

TimeOut last week had an article on the free beaches in Dubai. The one in JBR is free and OK if you're bringing your own beachmats, parasols and coolbox. It's between the Royal Meridien and Ritz Carlton. It's where the banana boats, parasailing stall, etc. are if they are feeling energetic :)

If you're just wanting to keep a record of appointments etc. you could use the Calendar in Outlook. If you're wanting it to be a blog, I've found Blogger the easiest and most self-explanatory - you just need to set yourself up a Gmail account first.

Just down from the Intercontinental, there is a little shopping area called Shatti al Qurm (I think) with a small Sheraton Resort hotel with Irish bar right on the beachfront. Facing the sea, if you walk to the left you come to a beach kiosk with tables and sofas on the beach itself - fabulous fresh BBQ-ed fish and meat, salads etc. really really cheap and saves you the trouble of doing it yourself!

Just a word of caution here - some of the MBAs you can do here in Dubai are only valid in the UAE, ie. if you want to use them overseas or put them on your CV, they are not internationally recognised, so make sure you do your homework. DH looked into this and even though they are v. expensive and look like the 'real thing', many of them are only worth the paper they are written on here in the UAE. Don't shoot me down ladies, them's the facts.....

Depends on your circumstances - are you buying to rent out or buying to live in? VH villas are lovely BUT no pools, no community facilities and only one school in the locality which at the moment is totally undersubscribed, so very easy to get your kids into, no waiting list.............., so that's a plus if you are wanting to buy with a view to renting. However, all VH residents have to drive, no question - there is no public transport whatsoever, so from that point of view AR is a better bet. AR is so easy to access MoE, good schools (JESS, etc.) so you need to look at the long term- personally I feel that AR has a far better community feel than VH - book clubs, mums and toddlers, decent shopping centre, etc. etc. - I always think that VH feels like a bunch of houses in the middle of nowhere so you basically live in your car - OK ladies shoot me down, but I would not want to live there.

Me too, my sis is a sports physiotherapist and always recommends shockabsorbers to her clients. Wearing an underwire bra, let alone two is really bad for you, esp. after the age of 35 and/or children. I have worn M and S sports bras for years but they don't compare to the shockabsorbers ones, especially for running. Well worth the money.

Hi Missteacher For souks on the Bur Dubai side get off at Khalid bin al Waleed (Burjuman Mall) and walk - about 5-10 mins (take water, lol). The Green Line to Festival City starts on 9th Sept Inshallah, change from Red to Green at Khalid bin al Waleed too. Buy yourself a NoL card and enjoy. Dubai Mall is on Metro too, as is Ibn Battuta Mall - thinking of all the indoor places at the moment. Welcome to Dubai, you'll love it here. Dubaistar
