Kelly, We had PC in once or twice and have 2 kitties. We put them in a cattery for one day, had PC come in early morning and gave it 24 hours before taking them home again. They do say to have them out of the house for a certain length of time but I was worried about residue on the floors etc that the kitties might get on their paws and then lick.... Maybe a little extreme but it was worth it for peace of mind... Good luck! Cats n dogs can die with the harsh chemicals used on PC. They should be kept away for minimum 24 hours as you need to then clean out the place before they come back. We place ours at a kennel n cattery, urban tails at DIP

Bird, DH just confirmed that the driver was arrested and spent 2 nights behind bars but was let off as the cyclist was not allowed to ride in that area... Just like emaar's community rules state :( Either way, it's not the time for a 'who's right' but we should all remember, that cycling is not permitted on main roads n moreover it's the cyclist who should be aware of other motorist as UAE is not like other countries where speed limits are much lower... Cyclist are putting the public at risk!!!!

I believe ecochic will find her statement: [b'>Dubai government rule - if a cyclist dies on the roads, the vehicle driver is not imprisoned as the cyclist is at fault for not following the law.[/b'> is not as categorical as she thinks. Dubai FAQ says: "UAE Federal Law No. 21 of 1995, and Ministerial Order No. 130 of 1997 cover the use of bicycles in the UAE. Article 16 of the law says that cyclists should ride on the right of the road, should not ride on the footpath, should use cycle tracks where available, and are not permitted to ride on[b'> main roads[/b'>." Roads inside compounds such as AR are hardly main roads. edited by simpleasabc on 11/11/2012 Why have so many bicyclists been run over lately? Partly, it is because the sport is gaining popularity here in Dubai - so more riders. But I think there is a serious lack of education here on the part of both drivers and riders on how to share the road. I know CycleSafe exists and there are plans from the Cycle Hub to do education - but until something changes we are all at risk. Sorry to burst your bubble :) Earlier this year an expat from my DH company died on the spot in the early hours riding his cycle at global village. Cops on the scene rushed him to nearby hospitals where they declared him dead. The company and family were informed that any accidents caused by vehicles to bikes n the riders were not the fault of the driver and the driver were not liable for any punishment or fines.... Sad but true... They blamed the cyclist n let the driver scot free.... Driver was an Asian pick up trucker... Even riding on the main community roads (not internal after gates) face the same... As told by the cops.... Circulars were issued to all staff...

I am so new at this (all the homemade, DIY stuff) and totally clueless. Where can i get - 1) Bulk sized baking soda boxes 2) Good quality essential oils 3) Small glass jars, small tins (for vapor rub), spray bottles 4) Beeswax I am sorry if i am asking the obvious, but with a baby in the house i don't want to go on a wild goose chase. TIA 1 - Baking soda in bulk (sold by the Kilo grams) at the Deira Fish market grocery shops. 2 - Essential oils so far at the organic store at the greens (very limited variety but good quality) 3 - Glass Jars, Tins etc, I personally reuse after i have sterilized it with hot water and a couple of drops of whisky (or any alcohol you have) :)... i reuse everything spray bottles also but if you want new ones you could try the supermarkets not too sure about the quality though. 4 - Beeswax, this one is on my search list along with glycerine blocks for the last year n half :) still have not found any... may think of ordering online or if you have found a source locally please share with me :)

I saw it too. If you are going to ride, you need to wear a reflective vest! A few minutes after I saw the poor person lying on the ground, another cyclist was almost hit because he was too dark to see. The little reflectors on your bike just aren't enough. It happened to me in broad daylight. Nothing will save you from reckless drivers. Wendopia, tell me not to! Not worth it. Roads are not meant for Cyclist in this country... don't blame the reckless drivers... way too many times I have seen cyclists who take up the entire lane at the ranches and cars have to wait till the second lane gets free so they can over take.... no amount of honking will make them move towards the side, it's just not right they cycle on the main road as it's UNSAFE and no amount of safety gear can safe a life. if you can't cycle on the bricked pavement (like so many other do) drive to jumeriah beach or other places which offer cycle lanes for long distances and stop causing problems with the residents who are returning home. Dubai government rule - if a cyclist dies on the roads, the vehicle driver is not imprisoned as the cyclist is at fault for not following the law.

I use a simple solution of diluted white vinegar and spray and clean my counter tops with it... keeps all the bugs away.... in my garden i use a diluted dishwashing liquid and spray the entire garden and door entrances to our house.... doing this for the last 2 years now and no ant or any other pest complaints... These are safe methods if you have kids or pets in the home. How much do you dilute the white vinegar ecochic? We have had these tiny brown/sand colored ants for months but I am absolutely petrified to call a pest control agency in fear that they don't really know what they're doing. Thanks It generally varies, depending on what i am using it for, cleaning counter tops, 1/4th cup of white vinegar for every 1 1/2 cup of water. vinegar shall have a strong smell but once it dries up, no stench at all. if you find the point of origin where the ants enter your home, spray that area with dishwashing liquid water.... they get killed immediately.... http://homeimprovements.ygoy.com/2009/03/03/home-remedies-to-kill-ants/ Great way to kill ants at home naturally n chemically free...

6 months back, I was sailing in the same boat... but not anymore... I have stopped using any comercial shampoos or conditioners... one of the reasons for me to stop using shampoos n conditioners was not just extreme hair fall but also the really harmful chemicals they use which are also carcinogen's. I have gone completely poo free and my hair is looking better then before and do not have to wash it every second day like the past. Hair fall, well my DH is happy to see no more hair on the floors every time I run my fingers thru it. I use Castor oil with a carrier oil (olive or coconut oil) mixed well and then apply it to my scalp and tips. Wrap a towel around my hair for 45 mins and then immediately head to my shower. I make a paste with baking soda and water on my palm and then massage it onto my scalp. Once my scalp is scrubbed I rinse it off and again put the baking soda paste on my hair to make sure the oil is removed. I dod this only when I use Castor oil. I have played with the proportions to suite my needs, As a conditioner, I use a variety of things.... well most days I do not use any as the oils are a great conditioner but once a week I do condition with either of these homemade solutions.... diluted apple cider vinegar or used chamomile tea bags soaked for about one hour in warm water or stale beer or a drop of essential oils diluted in water. After I step out of my shower I immediately comb my hair and have to say, do not struggle with knots any more. I have stopped using the hair dryer completely and let it dry out naturally. Hair has stopped falling and now it's started to strengthen itself. Hair has a natural shine to it and feels soft n smooth. DH too uses this mix without the conditioner and we bathe our dogs n cats with this mix too....

I know this is off topic but posting here would have a bigger audience.. Way to many huskies are getting stolen withing a last few weeks... guys, please do not let your dog out in the yard unsupervised. if you have a doggie door fixed to your backyard door, I would seriously say 'Block it'.... safety of your dog is more important then that tv serial you don't want to pause. German shepherds too are getting stolen, in fact, way too may PEDIGREE dogs are being stolen from villas with high walls. Beware of any hired help who is in contact with your dogs... sadly and mostly it's always an inside job (gardener, maid, driver, cleaner, car-washer etc) as these people get friendly with the dog and take it away. Please be cautious as if your dog does get stolen, don't blame anyone but yourself... safety is better then loss... PS: please share this message with everyone who owns a dog....

I still laugh when the most intelligent people in the world told us the universe was created from a big bang LOL we all grow up believing in old folk tales but if we do work our brains, then we see the amount of misinformation and can't fill in the blanks as it's all just a made up story. one thing i have learned is to question everyone and everything, even myself, this is the only way on can be certain and find the answers and gain more knowledge 70% of the worlds scientist are atheist and the remainder are unsure or agnostic. how i see it is, if they were biased, we would never have advanced technologically ever. actually thanks to those intelligent people thru out history (some were even put to death), we now know the earth is round and not flat and that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around. seems like these intellegent people are the reason why we live in our super easy world. without scientific evidence we all would be stuck in the dark ages id say.... the "god particle" is a nick name for the lay persons.....

Nyranee, Don't worry, i am not that smart... lol... just love science as it's my religion and it makes everything on this wonderful universe we live in. I have been following this for the last 7 years when i first came across it and was very intrigued about it. in simple language the higgs boson particle is responsible for giving matter different properties. One of the most mysterious and important properties is MASS. Some particles, like protons and neutrons, have mass. Others, like photons, do not. The Higgs boson, or “God particle,” is believed to be the particle which gives mass to matter. Laurelm.... can't wait for more developments.too.. going to be celebrating this over the weekend....

I personally have no idea as i have only used urban tails so far. but i strongly suggest that you go personally to the place with your pooch and spend atleast an hour just wandering around and checking the place. do not tell them you are coming as they there is always the off chance that things would seem different. we did this with many places before we left our 2 dogs last year. the most horrible place was "posh paws"' as we saw dogs in the kennels sitting in their own **** :( and while walking around we saw a play area where there were 2 large dogs (labs) and a tiny Yorkshire terrier together. in front of our eyes, we saw the lab bite the little one and then trample over it. it immediately fell down and did not move for a good 5 mins... all that time the care taker (untrained srilakan's) were just looking at what happened and turned the other way till we told him to take the small dog out and see what happened. the small dog stopped breathing and they did take is very lightly, we also saw a lovely german shepherd who was frothing in his mouth and they just ignored him till we told them that it's not sumthing a gsd does as we too have one. but they did not bother.... so like i said, please check the places before leaving your dogs... you can use cloud 9, spots above boarding, urban tails, positive paws or even oleys pets... just google them... these guys are good...

hilsbils - you are absolutely right, in fact it's always the superior nations leaders which are the oppressors and not the 3rd world countries. In the past, back in the late 70's the american government had overhrown the khomeini government only because the american allie in iran (the shah of iran) was not there to support the multi billion western oil corporations. hence the econimic hitmen were sent. there is a journalist, John Pilger, who has exposed how these superior nations leaders have for decades stolen nations, committed crimes against humans and are still doing so all 'un checked'. sadly the masses never know this side of the stories. all the major news channel's such as bbc, cnn, fox etc etc are all controlled by the governments hence there is no true journalism to be seen. I have spoken to many Syrians, Iranian's and other middle eastern people and they all say that this is just another way these nations can come and invade and rob them and their countries like they did in Iraq and Afghanistan. here is a link to John Pilger's documentaries. http://www.johnpilger.com/videos

small to medium size dogs are permitted by law to live in apartments, any large breed has to live in a villa so you can easily live in an apartment as long as it's mentioned in your tenancy contract. when i used to work we always took our 2 dogs to daycare. they used to have a gala of a time there. now i sit home with 3 dogs :) and spend the entire day playing and training with them. there are 2 good daycare's in dubai, you can figure which one is closer to your place of work. they also provide a pick up and drop off service. paws pet planet - http://www.pawspetplanet.com/ positive paws - http://www.positivepaws.ae/#!home/mainPage urban tails - http://urbantailsdubai.com/ (they have daycare too) I know all 3 ladies ladies who run the above places and they have fully trained staff to manage the dogs along with a pick up service. dog walkers are there but honestly i do not trust them as i have seen many of them just standing with the dogs and yapping on the phone or with another walker. not fair to the dogs and to the owner.

I came across 2 gulf news articles abot rats in JVC. JVT people are not complaining about rats but are complaining about Nakheel's false promises. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/housing-property/jumeirah-village-circle-tenants-smell-a-rat-1.578309 http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/rat-attack-shocks-jumeirah-village-car-owner-1.1024093 the rat problem has been there since 2010. only last month another article was published, so i am guessing there are still rats... well it would make sense as workers were not provided decent facilities and ended up leaving garbage which in turn attracted the rats.

A simple solution i use for ants in the backyard. I dilute an entire bottle of cheap dish washing liquid in buckets of water and throw in on my lawn and in my plants and pots. I do this every 4 months and keep the ants at bay. Dish washing liquid is not harmful to the lawn nor plants and is also pet friendly as I have 3 dogs who love sniffing. No ants at all.

What one needs to remember is, like humans, dogs too, get bored of things they have. So by flooding them with a zillion toys you have made them get bored of all of them. Toys should be given to them only when you are either playing with them or when you are leaving them home alone or as a treat for good desired behavior. Leaving them at the reach of your dogs 24x7 will make them get bored of it easily.... so take away the toys and break them out only when they are to play with you or to be left alone or for good behavior. Biting and any kind of destruction is a classic sign of boredom. They are just telling you that and if you can't see it then maybe you should not have them. All dogs need mental stimulation, hence walks, even if it's for 10 mins. Imagine you being locked up in a room with out any television, music, phones, magazines, etc... you will be completely frustrated stuck in four walls so do dogs also. Always remember, before leaving a dog home alone it's always a good thing to take them out for an exercise or just lay with them. Your goal is to tire them out so they can spend the alone time either resting or chewing their bones. One of the most common reasons why dogs Pee or poo while you are away and chew also is because they have "separation anxiety". They are unhappy that they are being left home alone while you are out. You would need to determine the level of this anxiety. In this case you need to spend time working with them to over come this problem. Most dogs have this and it can be easily over come with every day help. The best way would be to lock them up and exit the main door but stand some where close by, wait for about 2 mins and walk in and immediately treat and praise them. Do this for 20 mins every hour and half during the day and gradually increase the away time. This is a great way to counter condition them into staying home alone happily. Depending on the level of anxiety, it could take you a day, or a week or over 3 months for them to feel safe and comfortable being left home alone. Another way is Crate training.... it's a must for all dogs to identity a crate with their den. When we leave our 3 dogs home alone, we also leave their crates open, when we come home, they all are happily sleeping or just chilling in their safe dens. You can also use play pens (as you have small dogs). Basically, it's always good to leave a dog in a large restricted area away from the reach of any wires, furniture etc etc. It is safer for your dog. It could also be that you have not house trained them. By saying this, it actually means that your dogs have not identified the outside with doing their business. This is very important in the beginning puppy life of any dog living at home. To train them, use only high value treats (not dry food) such as boiled chicken (shredded of small pieces) or chicken / beef sausage. Carry them on you while you are home. It is always good if you have them already wearing the harness. Observe them constantly and when you see them sniffing, immediately clip them and take them outside. You may have to stand 5 mins or an hour also but once they get the job done, treat and praise enthusiastically. In the house, you must not let the dogs out of your sight. If an accident happens indoors, NEVER shout, yell, get angry on the dog. They do not speak our language so do not know why you are yelling at them. Dogs understand our body language and tone. When you yell at a dog for anything they will only continue doing that thing again and again as in their minds they take that thing as the reason why they got yelling. When an accident happens home, do not make any eye contact, nor verbal contact with them. You could give them a time-out if you catch them doing it in-front of you, but again no words at all. If an accident happens when you are not watching, no time out as they will not understand why. They will soon associate the outdoors with treats whenever they poop and indoors with no treats. Remember, using high value treats only helps achieve good and desired behavior. Never just give treats to dogs, they all have to really work for their treats, only then will they understand what is expected from them. I use the clicker as it's easier for them to understand. it's quite simple, good behavior = click and treat. You need to understand that your dogs are small so smaller bladder. If they constantly drink a lot of water, they need to flush it from their system constantly so you need to work with them and understand them. Dogs are not accessories, they love training, exercise, play time and a constant routine. If you still do not understand how then please use the various training facilities such as "Positive Paws" or "Paws Pet Planet" who use only positive reinforcement methods to help achieve good behavior. If you cannot or don't have the time, then I would suggest you give them to a family who will do the needful. With a little training, all dogs can be awesome. All the best :) and remember you need to SET YOUR DOG UP FOR SUCCESS hence you have to stay positive, happy and enthusiastic while interacting and training them.
