I have very painstakingly been doing a Couch to 5K app on my iPhone. The nine-week programme, with a lot of travelling and shin splints as a new runner, has taken me five months. I'm about to start week 9 and can now run continuously for 30 minutes and do 5k altogether (including the five minute warm-up and warm-down). I am so proud! It's been an enormous achievement for someone who always labelled herself as a non-runner. Next step is to sign up for a 5k run. So I say: just do it! You really will be amazed at what you achieve. I truly thought I could never be a runner and now I am. And my body feels leaner and stronger already. It's worth it!

You can go on waiting list at Al Qasr. I did that two years ago and two weeks before Christmas a table booking opened up, so all is not lost...

No impediment letter is the 'single status' confirmation letter (not required if you have a divorce certificate!). I got one at a registry office in UK ahead of a planned marriage in Cuba. May be worth asking at British Embassy?

Exactly what I thought, too, about how Tito came to be and came to be stocked there! Don't get me wrong, I think the staff are lovely and it's super-convenient - but I wouldn't get a mani done more than once every three weeks so this nail varnish is no use to me. And I agree that I expect the nail varnish cost to be covered within the manicure!

Careful with the SIM cutters - be sure that the chip would fit in a microsim. I was able to manually cut my UK SIM with scissors to fit as the chip was small. My Etisalat SIM had an enormous SIM so could not have been cut down to microsim size - I went to the MOE Etisalat though and got a new microsim on the spot for 25AED. There are articles online showing you how to cut a SIM down which show you the measurements and pictures so you can see if your SIM can be cut down or not.

I really like the white hangers you can buy in Spinneys. They have enough little hooks on them that you can use them in several different ways, to hang spaghetti strap tops securely etc.

That's the answer I gave the area manager too! Unsurprisingly no response to that!

Just had Dave re-image my PC, change the partitions so I have one rather than C and D, and reinstall all my software. Had further problems and he fixed them remotely with some screen-sharing software. All for 200AED. He's great. A big thumbs-up, thanks for the recommendation.

Afraid I think you need a VPN. I had Skype on my PC, installed in UK. Just had machine reimaged here and, although I could download the Skype exe, it hung halfway through the installation process until my VPN was switched on. I had the IT guy onto it and that was his conclusion too. I'm in Du area...

Anyone else find their new brand, Tito. very watery and smeary? The last manicure and pedicure I had there started wearing off (not chipping, literally just rubbing away) so badly after a day or so - just before a holiday - that I had to buy the bottle to keep it touched up through the holiday. I complained to the area manager and got a pretty naff response! She offered me a free touch-up next time - which is a free service anyway! Won't be going back there until they return to Essie (although the area manager also said Tito is a related brand, huh?!) - much happier with NBar in Ibn Battuta!

Just called the cinema to check, and they said they no longer do this promotion. Looks like no one at the mall is doing the Tuesday deals any more which explains why the website says 'The Tuesday Offers are currently being updated and request you to check back shortly.'!!!

Some browsers have plugins that can change defaults - for instance I have Firefox and use a plugin to change Google search automatically to Google.com in English.

It's a book of two halves - the first is an inspiring account of how he got to a 4-hour work week and why - the second is basically a how-to guide to setting up an eccomerce site. The bit I found most useful was him saying as a salesman, before he resigned from his job to go his own way and while he was trying to cut his hours, he ditched 80% of his clients because his business all came from a loyal 20%...

Am also struggling with 7.something % mortgage, for which monthly repayments are double what I would get in rent. I also have no solution... I did complain through the On Your Side column in The National and got my bank to drop the interest rate one whole percent to the 7.something... That may be worth trying if your bank refuses to help directly - particularly if they are offering new mortgages on lower rates. I'm interested in details of switching to a UK mortgage provider if you are British and have property there as I am and do - do you have any further details or a contact? Many thanks!

There is a Facebook event being run by Well Preserved, Toffee Princess and House of Colour - 'At Home - the Christmas shopping and get-together version'. Perhaps get in touch with those guys and ask them for advice?

I just got a 700AED fine removed - the licence plate shown in the photo for the ticket on the Dubai Police website clearly showed it was one digit different to my licence plate. Half an hour in the Barsha Police Station and it was sorted, very relieved... :-)

I think it depends what your triggers are. My asthma has never been better, have to take so little medication and I'm never wheezy. It's a massive reason for me to stay, and no hayfever either!

I too had issues with Mednet; they saw deviated nasal septum as a partial diagnosis and refused to cover the rest of my op, even, which the doctor wrote back to confirm was completed unrelated to the DNS - nasal lining inflamed due to allergies. Nope, not covered at all. Still, I'm finding Daman just as bad - they have spent over a week so far deliberating whether to cover the removal of a lump from my leg, they will only do two months of prescription medicines as standard and don't cover half the doctors as standard that Mednet did. Is there a good healthcare cover here?!

Just been researching this myself - there are classes at Gulf Photo Plus (evenings, weekend), Ductac (four Fridays) and The Shelter (a one-off day worskhop) - Time Out Tickets selling for the latter two.

I bought Go Nabit vouchers for Atelier des Chefs Dubai, they do all kinds of different cookery courses. Not tried it yet so no feedback on it for you :-) Think there was also a feature recently on cookery classes across Dubai in Time Out.

I'm in a free zone. I believe it's based on basic salary only; nothing up to one year's service, seven days per year for one to three years, 21 days per year for three to five years, 30 days per year for over five years. If you're in a free zone you can make a formal complaint to them about things like gratuity issues. Sorry, that's as much as I know!

I just bought the Nikon D3100 after it was voted best starter SLR by Digital Camera magazine. Got it for 400 quid duty free at airport before I left UK. So far so good. Was thinking of going Canon but the equivalent starter SLR, the EOS 1000D, was poorly rated and claimed to be outdated compared to the very new D3100. Hope you find something good!
