Obviously it is less hassle to sell a car without a loan but not impossible. At the end of the day, it is all about price.Buyers of second hand cars may not have to factor in as much depreciation as buyers of new cars, but they have to factor in, maintenance which will indeniably increase with age and mileage of the car. Most car will have lost at least 50% of their value after 3 years. Those with higher maintenance tend to loose even more. For a second hand car buyer, a 5 ear old well looked after car will commend a higher price than a hard driven, badly maintained newer car.Just check cost of maintenance on LR4 is as from memory it is not cheap.

just make sure the adviser is qualified to give expats advice as you could end up being financially worse off.

Just to add that if the company in Dubai is still operating, the lawyers may be able to enforce assets selling to pay of the debts. It all depends, how much money is left in the company coffers if any, ranking of creditors and so on.....Unfortunately the staff is very low down the ladder.Secured creditors come first. Also, I assume that if the lawyers took on the case, it was because there was a chance of recovering some owed money. they would not take on a case on the basis it is right in principle.Best is to go back to the lawyers.Fingers crossed.

Our psychiatrist Dr Nathani unfortunately returned to the US but I have been recommended Dr Amer Saadedine at the Dubai Community Health Center 04-3953939. He caters for all ages.We managed to get an appointment without too much difficulty. BTW concerta can be prescribed by a GP but only for 2 weeks at a time. A psychiatrist can prescribe concerta for a whole month. Also if the psychiatrist has a valid US or a UK licence as well he can write a prescription that can be used in these countries. The cost of med differs from country to country but in Dubai concerta 18mgs is fixed at 239dhs for a bottle for eg.

You can open a dispute online. I did this once and got refunded 800dhs which had been wrongly charged to my Salik account.I only knew about it when I was about to renew my car registration and it was sorted out very quickly. Please do not give up and pay.It is just too easy.

whats a "statement of needs" and who does that? I will ask my friend SusieP to answer this one. She knows the subject inside out and I believe you met her once. She is back in the UK. She does not read this forum anymore I think so I shall email her.

Aside from the unfair competition aspect of operating without a licence vs operating legally, there is also the issue the customer will have no consummer rights should something go wrong with the product bought. Most likely, people who operate without a licence will also trade in unlicensed products potentially harming the consumer (unlicensed cosmetics, unlicensed food etc.....). Unless you are a victim of these fraudsters or know someone who is a victim, it is very difficult to report as you need proof of them operating illegally. <em>edited by fjcruiser on 13/05/2011</em>

It's illegal to drive around with a For Sale sign on your car as you are doing business without a trading licence. Although in your case it is obvious you are selling your car privately, you could be a trader and doing business this way would break the law hence why it is illegal in any case. <em>edited by fjcruiser on 12/05/2011</em>

passport information line on +44 208 082 4723. This service operates 24 hours per day between 21.00PM Sunday and 15.00PM Friday BST. No email is given on the website just this number. When you applied, you would have given an email address. If there were any problems, they would email you. We had the wrong size photos and received an email and once we sent back the right photos, we received the passport back in a few days.

If you have a wireless network, you need to set up your router to only allow certain computers access (you will need to enter each computer MAC address into the router and allocate an ip address to each one eg 192.168.1.1 beeing the default gateway ie router and each computer MAC address to 192.168.1.2, next MAC address to 192.168.1.3....). If you only have a wired computer, you need to set up a password for logging in to the computer.

We have a jointly owned house which we rent out in the UK. Do we split the income and expensed by 2, or do you tell them you own 50% and they do the maths? Had a brief look and WTF is the difference between "residence" and "ordinarily residence"? I now it's in the Notes etc., but can't help but think that we could easily stuff up by giving the wrong answers... Apart from the house in UK, that's it. From my brief scanning, do I understand correctly that they tax you on the interests you earn on your foreign (i.e. offshore) savings? If so, what's the difference between offshore and UK savings accounts from a tax perspective? Or am I getting confused? edited by Sugarbeach on 09/05/2011 Re house, you should own it as joint tenants rather than tenants in common. You need a solicitor to amend this wording. Then you can split the rental income in two. You each have a personal allowance to use before tax becomes payable. You can also deduct wear and tear I think 10% of rental income, any agency fees, central heating and plumbing cover annual contracts etc, house insurance.... If you keep your savings offshore, they will not be taxed. If you live in Dubai, do not earn any money in the UK from work carried in Dubai and do not spend more than a certain numbers of days in the UK (check it's all in the HRMC notes), you will not have to pay tax in the UK. From the UAE Embassy in London: http://www.uaeembassyuk.net/ UK Citizens – Visit Visa Citizens of the UK (with right of abode in the UK) will be granted a free of charge visit visa on arrival in the UAE. No application in advance of travel is necessary. Your passport will simply be stamped with the visit visa as you pass through Immigration at any airport in the UAE. Although the visa may be stamped for 30 days, it entitles the holder to stay in the country for 60 days and may be renewed once for an additional period of 30 days for a fee of £100. Please note that holders of British Overseas Citizens Passport who do not have the right of abode in the UK do need visas to enter the UAE. HTH

We switched to K12 last November and have not looked back since. Although my DS has a tutor provided by K12 (additional cost - shared with 2 other kids), I find the curriculum very good as I know what my son does on a daily basis. I only do French language as an extra curricular activity at home with DS but it allows me to understand how the whole project works. The support network is excellent. I had no prior experience in teaching and the prospect of teaching my own son sounded quite daunting. The course material whether online or material is very good. Kids love learning using a combination of computer and traditional methods. He goes everyday for 4 hrs and has learn much faster than he ever did at school for a fraction of the price!

It is all well and good to get some ideas for investments from EW posters or from websites, BUT at the end of the day, the information you will get may still not help you decide where to invest. It all depends on your current situation, your age, attitude to risk, tax position and some other factors specific to you. An independant financial advisor can help you decide what is best for you by conducting a fact find (with the information I mentioned above). An independant financial advisor is either paid by a commision by you or he gets paid by the company who you invest into (at the same time he gets discounts that you cannot get directly). This would be disclosed at outset. Depending on your nationality, you may find that it may not be possible to invest directly in your country anymore and get the tax benefits (UK being an eg with Isas) so using the service of an independant financial adviser may be cost effective in the long term especially if the adviser gets paid by the company rather than by commision from you. Good luck with whatever you decide.

it all depends what you will use the printer for, eg print docs or photos, do you need color or black, do you neeed to print fast or not ? there is no perfect solution. If you need laser printer black and white I just bought the Samsung ML-1915 for 399dhs at Plug ins. Very happy with it. Unfortunately I could not find the right cartridge for my 7 years old Samsung in Dubai so I had to buy a new printer. Another thing, ask the shop assistant about ink as some are a lot more expensive than others so cost of running printer needs to be taken into account. Also make sure stock is available in Dubai. The shop will tell you which ones are easy to come by. Good luck.

Bentoya is very popular with Japanese expats which is a ggod sign. It is always busy.I used to live next door to it and went there once a week!I have tried most of their dishes and they are excellent. It is also very good value for money for normally expensive Japanese food. I like the atmosphere too and service is courteaous which is a plus in Dubai. Highly recommended!

Our maintenance guy told me recently to be very careful as there has been thefts in our area. A couple days ago, I was accosted by a guy coming out of the building site behind us and begging for money. There are many desperate unemployed people and some will try their luck for a bit of work too. When we moved in, within 10 mns the removal guys had left, the doorbell started ringing and we had 7 gardeners, 3 maids and various car cleaners offering to work for us pretending their were already working for our neighbours! at first I got a bit scared but none were aggressive. It is just the way people go about business here. They come and ring your doorbell. They got a polite no and none has ever come since!

Although it is a tragedy for both mum and the baby, with long lasting consequences, there is one positive thing which can be said about the whole story. It has been reported by a newspaper which means the subject is no longer taboo. In fact, there has been many cases like this which have been reported in recent months. The fact these stories never got reported before did not mean that the problem did not exist. The other thing is it can happen to anyone, whether from a poor, uneducated background or from a more educated background, even a western background. I think that because it has happened to a westerner (and she wont be the first or the last one), it is no longer possible for the authorities to sweep it under the carpet. I do hope this poor young girl gets all the help she needs and can be reunited with her baby asap.

Police is the first point of contact whether the papers were stolen or lost (that's just what I was told when we left our car keys in a taxi). Hopefully someone will find the missing papers and hand them to the police.Of course inform your embassy asap. May be they have an emergency number you can contact.Hope it gets sorted out quickly.

She needs to go to the Canadian embassy in London and apply for the relevant visa. The fact she is a UK resident is irrelevant as far as the UAE is concerned. Unless she has the relevant visa, no airline will take her on board as the airline is ultimately responsible for transporting passenger and could be fined if they are found without the proper documentation. BA and Emirates will be able to advise since many of their cabin crews are affected with the new visa rules for Canadian travelling to the UAE.

Having recently moved to Umm Suqueim we are contemplating becoming members at the sailing club and getting in to sailing. Tried to inquire at the club about membership and/or sailing classes but apparently there is a long waiting list for both! Does anyone have any suggestions/hints on how to get the membership. Would an introduction from an existing member help? Any suggestions welcome.. You could try JASC. Speak to Yousef the manager. Also Laser Performance Company in Dubai will be running some sailing courses from Mid January. JASC does not have the catering facilities of DOSC but is a very active club. You can still put your name down at DOSC anyway.Good luck.

Last September, some GEMS Indian curriculum schools hiked their fees by about 40%. If it was not directly the school fees, it was the transport fees. The argument was that there had not be any increases for a while and to give more resources to school, fees had to go up.

On the recommendation of my neighbour, I had some building work, some carpentry and plumbing done by JC and I am very pleased with the results. I was lucky to be able to see different works bt JC at my neighbour's so it was easy to see they were professional people.I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Aslam and his team. Although they call themselves Jumeira Carpentry, they do pretty much all sorts of works!
