I had this problem with my fridge which had to stay in storage for over 6 months. All I did is clean it and clean it again and eventually the mold disappeared (it only took a few weeks). I would not worry about the washing machine since it is only clothes and not food like a fridge. Make sure you leave the door open so air can get through once you finished the cycle. There is no real risk of contamination IMHO.

You could ask your LL to extend your stay by one month after explaining the situation. Also, re cats, make sure all the vaccinations (especially rabies is up to date!). edited by fjcruiser on 05/03/2013

Thailand healthcare is good and they want to make sure your relative is fine.Apart from the obvious rabies issue, rodents carry all sort of diseases so it is a precautionary measure.Hope it all goes well.

If the car is financed by a finance company, the owner is the finance company so you cannot sell it to anyone without their authorisation and they will require you repay the finance hence my first post. If the car is financed by a personal loan, the car is in your name hence you can sell it to anyone.

Either you need to contact the finance company and repay the loan to them (check the penalties) or set up a personal loan so the car is in your name and you can sell it freely. If the finance was with the dealer, you could see what they would offer you for the car (as a backstop as it will be lower than selling privately unless you buy from them again so they give you a decent trade-in price). As far as value is concerned, there is no book here to give you a valuation. Look on Dubizzle to see where people advertise their car and be cheaper. If it is an older car (more than 5 years), the dealers won't be interested and the price will be what someone is prepared to pay. Also don't assume dealers know about used car prices. I sold an 8 year old car in good condition at 3.5 times the price 3 dealers said I would get for it.Good luck.

It is new AmyAus82.My DS started the 6hrs in January. We found 4hrs was not enough so increased it after discussion with the school. It does increase cost but prorata to the cost of the tutor. The morning is generally busier than the afternoon but it allows my DS to socialise which is an excellent thing. My son gets several breaks.I still think that 6hrs at K-12 is more productive than in a traditional school.I drop him in the mornings and pick him up in the evenings. For cost and options, please talk to them directly as there may be restrictions on the age they take the students due to high demand. We were extremely lucky we joined at a time when it was new.I have seen K-12 evolving so fast but at the same time looking after their customers and trying to find a working solution for our kids. I cannot recommend them enough.I wish I could get a discount on fees for sending people across LOL. edited by fjcruiser on 02/03/2013 edited by fjcruiser on 02/03/2013

PeonyPink, the 6hrs my son gets is one of the packages offered by K-12.They are other packages available depending on your children needs. When we started 2 1/2 years ago,my DS was the second to enroll (at the time he was only doing 4hrs in the afternoon), now K-12 has 60 tutored students of different ages and grades. Please go and see them, you will not regret it.

HSBC Offshore in Dubai - +971 (4) 423 6077. There are minimum balances and sometimes restrictions about which nationalities are able to have an account with them. They will tell you about the paperwork needed before you can apply. Good luck.

I am personally very happy with the service provided by HSBC.I rarely have to go to branch but whenI do I go to the Mercato one in Spinneys. The service is always prompt and efficient. The online banking is good too and the HSBC UAE website is constantly improved and that's a bonus.I sometimes have to deal with the call centre and I always get good service too.BTW I do not work for HSBC, I am just a happy customer.

To Gouldian13,you are most welcome. To Gummy, I checked with K-12 in Dubai and the access to the online curriculum is exactly the same in the US and in Dubai. If you have finished the curriculum (i e at least done 80% of the course), the access online ends at the end of your chosen academic year. If you are behind in certain subjects, you can carry on accessing the online content past your cut off time whether you are in Dubai or the US. edited by fjcruiser on 27/02/2013

My DS is tutored on K-12 premises by a tutor (I should say learning coach) employed by K-12. He goes there 6 hrs a day.Their office/school is at Knowledge Village Block 12 first floor.Go and talk to them. They have different tutors for different types of learning. Some are in class of 6 to 8 with a teacher (called intensive learning program). This one is new this year and the kids are doing the same grade. It is like a school where they have set holidays. My DS is in the original program, with one tutor to 4 kids max.The kids are doing different grades. You choose when to take time off. We also have like yourself a learning coach who vets the work done at K12, who writes the school reports and whom you have a conference call once a month. For me, homeschooling was out of the question as I wanted my DS to go somewhere outside my home and for him to experience a small school where he can still interact with other students of different grades and ages. It is working very well and will prepare him better for the future. edited by fjcruiser on 27/02/2013

The reason we go with the K-12 in Knowledge Village is they offer excellent tutoring as well as being above board, as I would not want to teach my son. I agree it is more expensive than going direct to the US but if you need a tutor, it is an extra hassle if you do not know any and have to find one. Because of the UAE laws, I would not have wanted to hire a tutor unless he/she was working legally as a tutor. Many here work as tutors and do not have a licence to operate and that would not work for me. I did not know that K12 US gave access to the online curriculum for 12 months. It is a pain that there is a cut off here I have to say after the academic year is over. You can still work with the books though but it is less fun for my son!.

There is also K-12 Academy in Knowledge Village. Although there are known in the US as a home schooling system, in Dubai they offer different types of tutoring on site. My son goes there and we are very happy with the set-up. Their number is 04-440-1212

I was told to keep the cat at least 5 weeks by FF (you probably don't want to hear this sorry).Let your cat go out, he will probably explore slowly. Can you leave a door slightly open so he can come back in when he wants at least until he finds his bearings. Good luck.It is always a bit daunting at the beginning.

The first thing you are told when working for a bank is 'know your customer'.Most large banks with large networks have been under pressure to tighten their rules so to avoid money laundering in particular. It makes sense to me.The article says that as long as a client has an RM and the RM knows the customer, there is no issues.

Best to get the kitten used to dry food so you can buy Whiskas for kitten (they all love it). It can be given as it is (no need towet it).Reason is we live in a warm climate so dry food will not smell. It can be left without the health risk of rotting away.Your kitten will eat as he needs. The advantage is also from a litter point of view, it leaves dry poos so easy to clean. Make sure he always has fresh water too.As the previous poster said, no milk as it could kill your kitten. And watch him grow, he will quickly put on weight believe me.

The newer and better the car the less they have to be serviced Unfortunately, that's not really true. Manufacturers are specifying longer service intervals, but that's mainly because it's seen as a good selling point (buyers like the idea of not having to service the car so often). In reality, new cars benefit from more frequent servicing than the manufacturer recommends. At the very least, any car out here should have its oil changed every 5000km. Simply doing that will make a big difference to long-term reliability. Absolutely agree with this comment as I have experienced it on an older car. By servicing it every 5,000kms, not only I did not have to face the dreaded messages coming onto the dashboard, but in the long run, I also cut the cost of servicing.

To the OP. Don't just look at the service booklet as stamps can easily be forged. If the owner cares about his car, he will have all the service bills and will be happy to show them to you.If you buy privately (even if the car is not old), get it tested at the testing centre for 250dhs.It lasts about one hour and is worth the money.

Get an eye test done at an approved eye centre.Al Jaber is one of them. They are at MOE,DM.The test cost 150dhs and the results are directly loaded onto the RTA computer. You can just walk in for a test. Then take,UK driving licence, copy of passport + visa, copy of Emirates ID and NOC from husband allowing you to drive. You can go to the Dubai Police Department in Barsha next to the Tasjeel Car registration centre. Allow plenty of time as when I went recently to have my Driving licence updated (I no longer need spectacles), it took 90mns as there was no ladies section. You have to pay cash for a UAE DL (you will keep your UK one but it becomes invalid in the UK). I am not sure how much it costs. You can ring the RTA number for info (24hrs). They are very helpful and will give you the closest centre for you to go for eye test and getting the new licence. RTA no800 9090. edited to add: bring 2 passport photos with you (1 definitely needed for eye test-you ll get it back). edited by fjcruiser on 17/02/2013

The Edge is an AWD not a 4x4 so it does not have a low gear range nor high wheel arches if you get stuck in the sand. The car manual may contain warnings about driving off-road and it could affect your warranty should something break. You can hire a 4x4 for the day but this often requires 72hrs notice.

If your delivery ends up at the Karama PO, a customs official will check out the contents and you will have to pay if it is worth above $250. If it is a courier company delivering, they will take the duty from you in cash and give you a receipt. They will let you know first about the cost. That's what happened to me recently.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. For a start, it is incorrect that he has more rights than you because you live in an Arab country. The law of the UAE is very protective of women and children. You have nothing to fear. May be try to talk face to face alone with your hubby (away from the kids) in a neutral environment (so outburst are more difficult in public) and consult a marriage counsellor. Many names have been given on this forum for such specialists. Good luck.If you leave your house, where would you go ? your hubby could say you kidnapped the kid in an emotional outburst. Do not give any reasons to get angry at you and the kids.

It is all free and very sociable and I learnt a lot. There are some very experienced people who are so helpful and friendly. We have only been once as I am still weary of too much dune shaking after my back op! but I'd go every w-e if I could!

TomTom is not sold here as they stopped doing UAE maps for a few years as they could not keep up with updates. I know for sure UAE maps are now available again (look at their website). Garmin is very popular here. I think GPS are a tad more expensive here but there is always a risk of a loss on an online order or you could be liable for customs and excise duty.

My DH went there http://www.dubaihandsurgery.com/ and was operated by Dr JC Bouillon. He was very happy with the result as the scars cannot be seen after 2 1/2 years.Re Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it could be worth you seeing Dr Humeira Badsha at the Al Biraa Arthitis & Bone Clinic. My DH symptoms pointed to a problem with carpal tunnel syndrome and dupuytren's contracture so he had an op after many tests. As recovery was very slow and some pain remained, he went to see Dr Humeira who also diagnosed him with zero-negative arthritis (in a nutshell, it does not show up in blood test). To this day, it remains a mystery whether he had both issues or whether the arthritis caused the carpal tunnel syndrome issue. In the end he did not have to have the other hand done as the arthritis has been cured. I do not want to panic you, just to point you to perhaps seeing several specialist if you can. edited by fjcruiser on 06/02/2013

We took the plunge and bought a Subaru BRZ. So far the customer service has been excellent. All our inquiries have been answered.Later we went to Honda on SZR (we had narrowed down our choices to 2 cars by then) and the customer service was so dire in comparison. First we were totally ignored then spoken to in a rude way, then had a sale guy hovering all over us blurting out jargon instead of answering queries.Besides, the car we wanted to buy was not available for viewing let alone testing. And yet the dealership was full of posters of the so called car!. Another thing which really annoyed me was the sales guy only wanted to talk to DH who kept saying, my wife is the petrolhead. It clearly fell on deaf ears.LOL.Only Dubai. edited by fjcruiser on 04/02/2013

She will be remembered as a great queen. Time for a new generation to take over. It is a strange thing though to abdicate as normally the point of a monarchy is the monarch stays till he/she dies and the heir takes over (to ensure continuity under hereditary rules).IMHO, the monarch should not have the right to abdicate at will. As a monarch they are above the common law. They are monarch by virtue of the hereditary system. They have an obligation to rule as monarch. Therefore, it is not their choice to decide when to go. Queen Beatrix has definitely broken with protocol. edited by fjcruiser on 29/01/2013

I would just do what the police is asking. Surely, there is someone at the police explaining even in very basic terms what it is all about. The police has to investigate the accident to show no one else was involved, whether your nephew was involved in driving a vehicule while obviously not insured ? The reason an other x-ray may be needed is an airline will not fly an injured passager who could possibly die during the flight so the airline will need an ok from a doctor at the airport.Good luck with all this. IMHO, the police is there to help and make sure everything is done properly (also for repairing the car if a car was damaged for eg, a police report needs to be done).

I had the op last March after 6 months of excruciating pains caused by repeat sciaticas leading to me being unable to walk for weeks on end.Dr Msaadi will only consider an op if everything else has failed (like physio for eg or accupuncture) so he is not pushy at all. My back is 100% right now. No pains whatsoever.I just got back from 10 days skiing and I had absolutely no pain during or after skiing.Good luck with your decision.

If the kids let themselves in your house, tell them it is not okay to do this. They will quickly get the message. If you do not want your kids to play with them just tell the kids your kids can't make it.After a while they will give up.
