I don't even understand the purpose of the article! His experience of Dubai is limited to a few hours spend with a grand total of 3 drunk strangers in a bar : how can he judge a whole Community (Expats) based on that ? This is more than jumping into conclusion ! It really annoys me to see this sort of attitude, for me it is equivalent to what unfortunately many ignorant and narrow minded people say : "I haven't been there but I think this place is not interesting anyway..." ! This article reflects exactly the mind of the writer : simple, with a lack of inspiration !

Hello Fantooka, Maybe you should contact Immigration and explain your situation. I know that you can extend your tourist visa at DNRD for another 30 days for about AED 700. Sorry I can not be more helpful but maybe other Ladies on the forum have more info. All the best !

Hello, Children of 10 and below have to seat in an appropriate car seat (booster for the older kids) but if the child is tall and the seat belt reaches the shoulder then they can sit in the car without any kind of extra seat. Also, children must be 13 to sit in the front (according to my RTA book).

Yes, I see what you mean Egg, but I don't want to give out any number. I did this in the past and it cut my application short (no negotiation and I don't think I was being unreasonable!). You might say that maybe it was a good thing and I was better off, but I would like to put all the chances on my side and discuss salary after or during the interview.

Sorry, but there is no such thing as Soccer League here in Dubai, it is not set up like in Europe for example where you have your local club competing with other clubs in the same League. I find it a bit disappointing and confusing as for me the main motivation was to compete and beat other teams and improve the team's ranking! I don't think there is any sport here in Dubai with proper League representation (but I can be wrong, maybe some Ladies here could let us know )

I do not want to cause a new debate or any trouble but why should working mothers have different rights to childless people. Many people would like to work through lunch and finish early etc as we all work long hours here Not all of us surf the net for 2 hours or sit on our mobiles I for one like the fact that the UAE gives the same rights to each of us Sarahlou, have you got any children? I you had you would understand how ridiculous your statement is. As for "the same rights to each of us" : are you serious ?

There was a bus when the Metro opened that did this service and went all round TECOM and then to the Greens shops. Is that the same thing? I don't think it is: I just got the flyer through my door today: it is a new initiative to reduce carbon emission (Dubai is going Green).

When you see a vehicle with emergency lights on (police, ambulance, fire trucks) you should always give way and give enough space for them to drive past. So I would have pulled over. But, I saw a police car with its blue lights on this morning, I went on the other lane (I was on the fast lane at that time) and let them drive off past me. But I have to admit that there was another in front of them who just ignored them and continued driving in the same lane: I don't know if the car driver was fined.

Hi Dinky, I also was told recently that I suffer from Rosacea: last year I was suffering from redness and rash on my face. it was a nightmare! Went to the dermatologist who diagnosed rosacea: I had a course of antibiotics (for 4 months!) as the rash was very bad and canastene cream every day (there was also an other cream but I don't remember the name). Although there is no cure for it, my rash has now disappeared and my skin is much clearer. I was advised to put sunblock every day (avoid direct sun) and to continue with the canastene cream. I need to have a check up with the dermato every 6 months now. But I am glad I went to see her, I don't even need to put makeup on anymore! My advice is : go to the dermatologist, avoid sun. Don't try other products on your skin as their are not specific for rosacea (mainly for spots and acne problems, which is very different from rosacea). I hope you will get better soon, don't despair !

[ My DH is in senior management and talks to me about his largely Indian workforce who he says are massively over qualified for what they do.It's not unusual for them to have BAs,MAs and a whole raft of other qualifications and language skills,he's so impressed with some of them and their work ethic but they don't work for western wages, they can't have their families over here and the hours are ridiculous.Much of the time this is what you are competing with and it's very hard especially if you have a family.I don't work here and often feel a bit useless especially since I can't even have a small home based business here for example. But I drive miles doing the school run (no bus from where we live) and generally keep the home fires burning so to speak which is important when your DH typically does 12hr days.Basically someones got do the little extra bits in life that keep the wheels turning. It's a shame that it's so hard to say, work part time and have a balanced life and I really wish all you job hunting gals the best of luck- you've got to try .Meanwhile pass the virtual wine :) Cheers to that!

Is she able to use her Paraguayan licence to obtain one from a country that gets automatic transfer here? Many years ago, Australian licences werent recognised here, so Aussies got a UK licence with their Aussie one, which then was transferred to a Dubai one. . Unfortunately this would not work: you need to have the same nationality as the country where the licence is issued. Eg. if you have a UK driving licence but you are a Argentinian citizen it doesn't work. I know it's very unfair but there is no way around it! Sorry!

I am affraid your friend will have to pass the test again: there is no way around it! Maybe she can see if she can get a reduced amount of hours : maybe she wont have to take all the 40hours. it depends on the driving institute, on the origin of the driving licence and on how long she has been driving for. They will advise her when she register with them. Good luck!

Tourists can use an international Driving licence or their existing Driving Licence issued in their country. A European tourist can use a German/European Driving Licence (as long as it is also written in English). But if you are a resident you [u'>must [/u'>have a UAE driving licence to hire a car or drive a privately owned car. There is no problem to rent a car if the UAE driving Licence is less than a year old as long as you have another European driving licence (which should be over 1 year old).

I am moving to Marina, but I have car, so I can move easily. I assumed that food from Europe would be more expensive, but could you please tell me, where do you shop personally? And brand of milk, please :) (I cannot live without 1l of milk per day) Welcome to Dubai! Coming from Europe too, and being a big milk drinker too, I buy Almarai. I tried others but don't really like their taste. But from time to time I "treat" myself with some Elle&Vivre milk !

So glad you are not my neighbour! We had a party to 2am on a Friday night. Informed the neighbours in advance, invited a few of them and nobody complained. So long as people don't abuse, noise is a way of life in a compound or appt block. You want peace, go live on a farm This is a selfish attitude: you are basicly saying people making noise disturbance have the right to do so and people who respect their neighbourgs by being considerate are the "bad" peolple ??!! I am sorry but the rules apply to everybody for the sake of everybody quality of life !

if you live in a community, there is actually some "Community Rules" every tennant or owner [u'>has [/u'>to abide to. We are having the same recurrent issue with one resident in our community: parties until very late at night (4:00am!!). They did not listen to the Security Guards. So we made a complain to Emaar, they have a dedicated contact for complains and they came back to us very quickly. There is an investigation as we are not the only one complaining and there will be fines issued to the "miscreant" for every complain made against him !!! You should check with management! When people decide to live in a community they should respect other people who live there and act in a civilised way.

Sorry to hear those numbers are wrong. But now I think about it, I had to extend my visa (provided by Emirates) and I went to the [u'>Emirates [/u'>Visa office (not near Mercato nor clock Tower). There was 2 counters there: one for extension of Visas and for new applications from sponsors (residents). The office is located near Emirates metro station (after Terminal 3). I took a taxi to get there and asked the driver for the "Emirates visa office" he knew what I was talking about (it is next to "the pink building" as he called it, the old RTA offices). it took a couple of minutes to drive there (fare was under 10dhs) very short distance. You can also ask the security staff at Emirates tower, they also indicated us with the directions. Note: the building is quite an old looking building (it looks industrial) and from outside you wont be able to tell that there is an Emirates office there. Good luck again, I hope the visas will get though.

As dog water was mentioned in the OP, I'll go with that one. I've been out all morning so don't know if the thread where the OP was asking if she should supply her dog with water all day or just when it eats in morning and evening is still here. I did say that I couldn't believe anyone could be that stupid, and I'll stand by that (fwiw I don't believe it was genuine). Would I say that to someone's face? You can bet your next manicure I would. There are many posts on here which I find frustrating, largely because people have a difficult mindset to me. Doesn't mean I'm right or they're wrong, we're just different so I'll try to bear that in mind as I post. But when someone appears not to know whether to supply an animal with drinking water all day, seriously?? We're supposed to tiptoe around that? Congratulations ! Thanks to your impeccable logic, we can answer every posts on this forum with one sentence!! (i am being sarcastic, if you have not noticed)

Thanks SDD! I have to admit that this is my primary concern and the only thing that is stopping us moving there. But last time I drove there to go to the Fitness First Club, I only saw a few people jogging and a few riding bicycles. The communal area (swimming pool, play areas,..) must be inside each "district" then ?

Thanks Rosierat for your input! Yes I think that it's in a very good location. We live in an apartment in the Greens, but we miss having a garden and a house. So that's why we think it would be a very good option. I am also concerned about my son making friends there (he's 11 and at the moment he loves playing downstairs in the community area with all the other children from the block). Do you think he could have the same sort of interaction with other kids there or peole are more "private"?

Hi Buttercup, My DH and I both have a Abu D visa (I am under his sponsoship) but live in Dubai. My DH had his Driving Licence issued in AD (uk licence), I had to pass my driving test as I have a French driving licence but not French national : I pass my test and got my licence here in Dubai. She will have to bring proof of living in Dubai when she goes to the RTA (rental agreement, Telephone bill,...) along with all the usual doc.

I know it might sound obvious, but maybe you should get the nanny involved with all the children in games and then slowly the LO might realise that she is not so bad after all? And she might copy her sibblings if they are "friendly" with the nanny? Not sure what I said helped or if your friend has already tried that. :/

I had a last minute change! Actually when I checked my mails this morning after school drop off, I had a request for an interview at 10:00. So I had to wait till 8:30 to call them and confirm the interview. I just got back from it now (after a detour to the local shop) ! But I will DEFINITELY be there tomorrow at 8:20 for morning coffe!!!! PS: how was the morning run in MOE ?

Hi Nedala, There is a new stall opened in DFC: they sell guitars (small ones for kids) and violin but I am not sure they are small ones. It might be worth a try as i think it is all for young (future) musicians. it's on the 1srt floor opposite IKEA entrance.
