Hi there, Ive just returned from the UK simply to renew my passport as I didnt trust sending it away here - I did the one day service cost 138.00 ( that was for the bumber passport 40 pages). You have to make an appointment but this can only be done 2 weeks before. It takes 4 hours on the day and the process is simple and quick... the office is situated right out side the tube station Victoria. Hope that helps I did this yesterday, turned up for my appointment then went shopping for 4 hours before going back to pick it up :) Perfect!

I've not tried it but saw something in Boots last week (in UK though not sure if they sell it in Dubai) that's supposed to take any dye out of your hair http://www.boots.com/en/Colour-B4-Hair-colour-remover-extra-strength_1000976/?cm_mmc=Bazaarvoice_rating_and_reviews-_-Babycentre-_-Colour%20Remover-_-1000976

Good luck :) Felt exactly the same, put it off for months and months.... then put it off all last week... then finally on Saturday I got behind the wheel... the anticipation was FAR worse than driving was, I soooo wish I'd do it much sooner! I've got lost a few times but it doesn't really matter? I've got to know Dubai more over the last few days than I have in the last 18 months :) I went out with my DH the first time, since then I prefer to go without him because he stressed me out far more than the driving did! You'll feel so proud of yourself once you do it x

The 9790 has the qwerty keyboard and is also touchscreen. That's the one that I wish that I'd got (I've just got the full touch screen Torch). I'm missing the keyboard badly! The Blackberry website lets you compare phones if you've not checked it out already :)

My daughter (who lives in the UK) has just been offered a conditional place at uni for computer science, she took ICT and the other A' Levels were non computer related (psychology, business and biology)

Sorry no advice Egy, in a similar situation really so will be reading this thread with interest. For us we do have time together - but I feel I always have to nag him for it - given the chance he'd work all evening and all weekend too. Seems to think that just because he's in the same room as me we're 'together' even if he's on his Blackberry checking mail all evening/weekend! Horrible feeling to feel that your DH is only giving you time because you've nagged him and that he'd prefer to be working really - well that's how it makes me feel anyway :(

Hi :) I've just had to do this (but from the UK). The name at the top is your NEW name (I got this wrong so I know!) I don't remember section 1a but like you I'd assume your new name I was told I just needed my wedding certificate and old passport as ID x edited by fruitcake on 14/01/2012

Same as April - rub a gold ring on it, my mum used to swear by it! I went through a stage where I had a few and got something called gold eye ointment from the pharmacy (in the UK) maybe there is something similar here?

Chaos! people are being encouraged to take their kids to work too as most schools are closed. I was supposed to be flying back to Dubai on Wednesday 30th but have moved it to Thurs/Fri instead, apart from the queues etc there are no lights from Heathrow/Gatwick to Dubai available! edited by fruitcake on 27/11/2011

Have you looked at Executive Towers? Some of the ladies on here live there and there is (or was I'm not sure now) a large thread on here about Executive Towers. I've heard they have some really large apartments and great value too. We looked at a couple in Southridge too that were a good size although I don't know much about them. But both places had apartments in a similar price range to what I think you're looking for. Exciting looking for somewhere to live! We're going to check both of those out before deciding. Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but does anyone know how much notice we need to give the landlord letting him know that we don't want to renew the lease ealryl next year?

I love the Lofts jenc. Easy to get to the DIFC, short walk to the Metro (if it's not too hot!) Disadvantages though - no shop! We were told they were putting one in but that was months ago - no sign of it yet and instead there is a new Maclaren garage - which will have fab cars but not much help with milk for a coffee! Also the reason we got the apartment we did was because we had a great view of part of the fountains - now there is a new building being built and blocks it even though we are high up :( That said, we are hoping to stay when we come to renewing in March but will try the East (I think) tower as maybe the view is going to be better from there. Good gym which is quiet most of the time, 2 pools, great maintenance, squash courts, and other than for the hottest 3 months of the year it's only a 5 or 10 minute walk to the mall. Spinneys at the Residences is also only a short walk but way too far in the August heat! There is a shop under 8 Boulevard that delivers so I've used that a few times. People are friendly too. I don't have young kids so can't comment really on life there for children :) Hopefully they will have a shop soon, if not then maybe the new building directly opposite will have one?! Good luck with finding somewhere wherever you end up :)

I don't live there but know someone who does. He likes it enough, close to work, nice apartment, doesn't seem to have any complaints, he's a man so doesn't expand on it much more than that! :) I am in the Lofts though, we didn't want to be so close to work at the DIFC :)

My sister lives near London and many times I've been shivering with a mass of clothes on whilst she's telling me her daughter is in the paddling pool! Maybe once the novelty of Dubai sunshine wears off I'll appreciate the cold a lot more :) I don't have little ones anymore either so I guess I'm lucky that I don't have to try and entertain them in the heat - if you can call that lucky, just visited my new nephew and feeling all broody *sob*! :\:

Guess it depends on where in the UK you are, after spending the last 38 years living in Yorkshire and then only 4 weeks in Dubai I'm looking forward to getting back to the heat! Whilst Yorkshire is a beautiful part of the country and I've been missing home a lot lately - I've certainly not missed the weather which is totally different to the South of the UK and London! Really pleased that anyone who's been to Ascot this week had a good time regardless of the weather :)

Sorry I can't help more other than I know that you can have filler put into your hands - an ex work colleague of mine did. I'm sure someone will be able to help more though! At a guess I'd expect that cosmetic surgeon that does fillers etc in the face would also be able to do hands? But what do I know :) edited by fruitcake on 21/05/2011

Thank you everyone, really appreciate the replies and it sounds like I must have been trying to overly complicate things, but I was so worried about the same happening as Niggles and getting the wrong ticket and being sooo embarrassed! I Feel much more confident about trying the metro now – and curious to see Khalid Ben Al Waleed station now too! Would anyone know which of the coffee mornings are on the metro route? Then I can use the metro AND see if I can meet new people P.S MB you’re right it’s very clever!

I was thinking of attempting to use the metro, figured it can't be that much different to back home in the UK... but I just can't figure it out?! :\: There seem to be so many different price options for a ticket, different zones and it also seemed that it depends on how many different metro trains you need to get to your destination? Can anyone explain it simply or point me towards a website that can please? I'm feeling really isolated stuck in an apartment in Downtown area all day, my kids are late teens and not here, I should be getting out and about and seeing more of Dubai than the Dubai Mall! :)

I think that you have to be a silver/gold member to use the ID card and then you can use 5000 of your skywards miles to get a new silver card that needs to be activated to be able to use the eGate. I THINK though that you can buy an eGate pass for AED 200 that is valid for 2 years - you have to have a residency visa for this.. http://www.dubai.ae/en.portal?topic,Article_000551,1,&_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=home No idea if that page is up to date or not though! As for the baby, sorry I've no idea! :)

I just bought a condenser dryer after my vented one caught fire while on a dry session. I LOVE my condenser, it is economical as my monthly elec bill has gone down since I started using it (Im in UK though). It dries clothes perfectly everything from ready to iron to cupboard dry, things are easy to iron afterwards and you will be suprised how much water it collects in the dry cycle (you empty it after each session). I wish I had bought one ages ago as my vent dryer used to make the kitchen feel damp even with the hose going out the window. I have one too and agree with amanesmama, I LOVE mine. I got one with a sensor on it and set it to cupboard dry... SO easy to iron afterwards - half my clothes don't need ironing even :) Electricity bill has also gone down although that could be to do with that is has a sensor on it so never overdries clothes therefore is on only half the time as my old vented one :)

They sound a little like what we've just had back in the uk, they were plaster beetles, very tiny that you could barely see them, when I looked closely there we so many! Called pest control and was told they don't just live on plaster always but in damp, humid place and with mould (although the mould was under a tile and couldn't be seen at all.....) I was told to reduce the humidity in the house, check for leaking pipes around sinks/shower trays etc and use a humidifier or even opening windows can help. Or pestcides. No idea if these are the same things that you have or if they even exist in Dubai! :)

I flew from Gatwick yesterday and unless you chose to sit next to someone you could have the whole row of 3 or 4 seats to yourself I've only ever flown here with Emirates. I was thinking of trying Qatar though - I've never done a flight with a change and keep putting it off!

Hello Ladies, I have been checking out other comments regarding the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred on here and apprently the result are fantastic! Alhtough it does nearly kill you.!!!! That said i am past caring - i will give it a go - how hard can 20 mins a day be lol They have a montlhy 30 day shred thread going to help motivate the peops! Have just jumped onto the bandwagon and have ordered of Amazon - not coming until May 1st - anyone know best download site onto DVD? I do beleive in cutting out carbs also - not in the evening meal - but brown toast / brown sandwhich etc of morning / lunch can balance this out. i have not done it for a while! If i am totally honest my biggest problem is cutting out the glasses of wine i consume after a hard days graft! But that another thread;) I've been doing the Jillian Anderson for the last month and it's the first dvd I've stuck to and has great results! Far easier to motivate myself knowing I've only to do 20 minutes than to think it's an hour. I went for a run last week - and I don't run anywhere usually - and couldn't believe how well I did - AND - my bum didn't wobble like it did a month or so ago!

Thanks both of you! I'll give the Dubai laundry a ring and see if they'll do it - otherwise I'll try the Manzil :) You forget how much you take for granted until you're in a different country and things are done so differently :)
