All gone. Jebel Ali used to be fantastic until it was ruined by yet another unfinished development. :( The Al Sufouh beach is the last one now. Or Open Beach on a weekday.

Best thing to do is rifle through the web for entrance exams from all over, UK and Oz. Worked for us as it gave LO a great wide range of question types and practice.

http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/aug/30/pocket-money-how-much Found this interesting, and depressing! The comments are priceless. It's an old topic, I know, but when the kids can't work part time here when they're teenagers, it becomes all the more important. my teen has a part-time job, as does his friend... Interesting! I won't ask for details but in what field?

A bit hit and miss, unfortunately. Bottomless coffee tasted like fairy liquid, cappuccino very good, salmon salad VERY poor, rocket salad so so. Will stick to scones and cappa next time, I think. How's the fry up breakfast? Anyone tried?

I noticed Mugg and Bean has opened in Umm Sequiem, in the new Waitrose. We ate in the old one in DFC a long time ago and wanted to ask for reviews of their lunch menu. Even to pop in for tea and scones. Anyone bean yet!?

If you have a few investments with HSBC, you might qualify for a Premier account (350,000 AED or more). Then transfers globally between HSBC accounts are free. With HSBC Advance the fee is US$7 per transfer. Not sure about best rates though. I imagine they're all nearly the same. HTH

Or you could save yourself a bundle and download Kingsoft Office for free. Does most of the same stuff as MS Office.

Does anyone know the contact details of a laundry service in Satwa that could collect and deliver (and clean in between!) duvets and bedspreads? Thanks in advance We use three star laundry. Approaching from Jumeira, it's on the right, not quite bit nearly opposite the little park. HTH

Love Russell Brand, his intellectualism and self confidence is often misunderstood or misrepresented. If that was me, I would have walked out when they called me Willie...he handled it brilliantly, those anchors are pretty useless. What was she thinking? Willy Russell....Willy Brandt....?

Only Du is available in the Ranches, it depends if you upload/ download a lot, I would go for the 100mbps, and highly recommend a strong router that covers the entire house ( I bought mine from Sharaf DG in Times Square) about 10mins drive from the Ranches, they are also in Dubai Mall. Reception for phones using Etisalat (phone carrier) is not too good as there are not as many transmitters as the area is Du ( the alternative carrier) Good Luck, we love living there, especially nice in the cooler months :) Sophie, we have terrible speed/coverage problems after upgrading to 16mbs. What router do you recommend? TIA

PS, you'll be up against some seriously qualified candidates from South Asia and the Philippines. That's why the pay is so low here for those positions. For decent pay, you'd need to be looking at executive secretary/assistant jobs, which need a few years experience. The international schools here hire now and again, but again the salary will be a shock to you! HTH

I know, I know...arggh the trouble they cause when they're here and then when they're not!!! LOL Thanks bb. We wouldn't be hiding anything as this is the company rule. As long as you are sponsoring your daughter (here or not) you get the corresponding housing allowance. We've been in the same place a long time and really don't want the trouble of moving, or paying a huge difference to stay put! i quite agreed that moving is a pain... but you have to think about that in order to her to remain sponsored when the visa is up for renewal, you have to be here to do the medical test after you reach 18, obviously if the renewal was up in the wrong timings etc, she wouldnt be able to just pop back on a plane to do the testing. you cant do them that much in advance when it may be convenient like in a holiday etc.

So sorry to hear that. We have been going through the same thing, with self-harm going on too, it's desperately stressful, I know. We have found Denese Macdonald to be exceptionally sensitive to these matters. She's based in the Dubai Community Health Centre, near Nicolas and Asp on Beach Rd. Link: http://www.dubaicommunityhealthcentre.org/infopages.php?page=19 I really hope things work out for you and your son. H

Thanks so much hiccups. I see the parachuting ends no later than 2pm, on their site. Will hope for best and give it a go. Wish me luck! Sat is the 1st, Sun is the 2nd (National day) normally Sat/Sun isn't too bad but with Nat Day and Parachuting Champs on at that end who can say? If you're driving plan to park further away or valet and if you're in a cab get out once there is decent pavement and walk if the traffic is stuck.

Various studies show that the sleep pattern during teenage changes. I've read a study, about 10 years ago, showing that teenagers are actually at their high energy level around 10pm. A new research suggests that the hormonal upheaval of puberty could be causing adolescents to experience troubles in their sleep patterns. Yet, as the school rythm doesn't allow them to sleep late, they need to find a balance. My first reaction to your post, Harrimayne, was : Do you really want to put chemicals in your teenage child, and do you really want to give her the habit to relly on a pill to sleep ? Also, you didn't mention her age. I would consider it differently if she is 13, 15 or 17. Maybe, if you didn't already do so, be firm on timing and the use of any screen activity : TV, computer, facebook, skype, twitter and BBM. My personal experience : Unless you really take them off her room, it is most likely that the temptation of using them is to strong. Your child might obey you for a while, but unless they stopped long enough to take the habit, they are reached out by friends and start to reply to them again. (Ok, I admit, I am strongly against BBM for teenagers). Several studies also show that people allowing themselves some time (around 1 hour) in a calm environment before going to bed are falling asleep much faster. So, maybe having your daughter giving you any communication tools about 1 to 2 hours before sleep time will help her. Also, ask her to read a book, and give her the most boring book she can ever encounter. Usually, it works well to fall asleep. At one point, my eldest DS asked also for pills. The answer of my DH was always the same : Take your math manual and read it. Within less than a week, any of his sleep disorders disappeared. Other solution I would suggest is to have her learn self-hypnosis. I teach it to clients who have such difficulties and get great results. Then, if all this won't work, I would definitely see a MD, as it might be something that needs to be followed. HTH Thanks for the advice, it's very welcome. DD is 16 and while we did restrict the BB and laptop when she was younger, we let it slide as she got older. That was our mistake probably. We'll try hiding the modem first, see how that goes!

I wouldn't go near AAA. Something always goes wrong with the car 1 week, 2 weeks after getting it back. I've used these guys, small garage, very reasonable, but do take a while to get the job done. Catalytic convertor needed replaced on old Pathfinder, Nissan service center quoted 8000 Dhs, these guys did it for 1400 Dhs. No issues since. http://a2b-garage.com/

I've just signed up for the Mashreq Titanium Smart Card. They say it gives 10% cashback on education fee purchases. Sounds too good to be true, but I'll try it when it comes and see how it goes. The offer is valid only till January 31.
