my telly has three plugs sockets that are like headphone jacks...... it's not the most modern, think it is from last century :) Then you would need a projector cable (don't know what else to call it?) and a sound cable. Am sure that the TV has an input for the cable. Not sure if your laptop would have the output as most don't come with it now. Maybe swop the b&w for a colour tv? :p

Oh thats really easy, your telly should have comewith an HDMI cable that connects into TV and one into laptop and hey presto! Well atleast thats how simple mine was...... you lost me at HDMI You can find these at Sharaf or any of the electronics stores. Even C4 have them if I am not mistaken. Just ask them and they will be able to help you out. First check to see if you have an HDMI slot on both the TV and laptop. The new Samsung TV's are great. You just slot in any ordinary USB stick into one of the USB slots and can access movies through the built in player. Not sure if other TV's have that feature.

I've downloaded quite a few apps for DD who is 18 months old now. A few are a definite hit for her! 1. Smurfs - she knows how to shake Papa smurfs potion and Greedy's baking game and the others available at this level. I've been playing it with her to move up levels. 2. Talking Tom, Talking Tom 2, The dog one, Talking Gina... basically all the free talking apps. Keeps her amused. New Talking Tom is great! 3. My First Words 4. Toddler Shapes 5. English Flash 6. Big Top Circus 7. Wacka Monsta 8. Toddler 123 and Toddler ABC 9. Clean Up 10. Animal Shape Puzzles 11. AlphaBaby I usually download the free version to see what her reaction is before buying the app. She doesn't bother with some of them. Good luck with trying to take the ipad back from a toddler. I recently downloaded copies of Barney & Teletubbies to the ipad and sadly I don't get much time on it now.

Thanks Ladies Icedqueen - Do you have to work for a freezone company or etc to get EGate renewed there? No. You can do any of your visa related stuff there as well. They close at 5pm though. There is 1 counter for egate not always manned so you have to ask them. We've been going there for years and there are never any queue's when we go. Take your old card in case they ask for it but the last time it took less than 5 minutes for me. He just asked me if it was a renewal and printed a new one for me using the information on my passport.

You can go to the DNRD in Jebel Ali free zone. It's near Cedars Int'l Hospital and the banks and gate 3. Sorry not good with directions though! I just did mine 2 months ago there.

I used to go to Nail Spa in Ibn Batuta but after I went to Spaces (found coupons in the Gulf News coupon book so I thought I would give it a try) I will never go to Nail Spa to be butchered again! Even though I applied Emla I could still feel the pain with Nail Spa. At Spaces, they use a different type of hard wax which is not painful at all. I have a very low pain threshold but could not feel anything and was in complete shock that she had already pulled the wax off already while chatting. Would definitely recommend Spaces but ask for the hard wax.

We recently used the Hotwire unpublished hotel deals and found a little gem of a hotel called The Bedford. Its a 3 star but very clean and the service was amazing! Just 2 blocks from Grand Central so very close to everything. Paid around $196 per night. They upgraded us to a deluxe suite so there was a massive sitting area and a separate bedroom and bathroom - rare in Manhattan. There was also a little kitchenette in the room - behind a closet was a stove, fridge, microwave and a coffee maker. Met the owner in the elevator as well. Old guy wearing a hat and then on Thursday evening realised that most of the patrons were from a certain religion that cannot be mentioned here. Nevertheless it was a really lovely hotel. Also stayed at the Holiday Inn 6th Ave. The rooms were tiny and the service was average. Dust behind the TV and not cleaned very well. Cost about $240 p/n. We did not spend much time in the hotel so did not really mind the size of the room and bathroom. The location though, was amazing! There were at least 3 subways in the vicinity and very close to Madison Square Park. You could walk around at night and feel safe. Good luck with your hunt. The prices of hotels are just so crazy in Manhattan.

This is an old thread but just thought I would share something I recently learned of. Put 1 tsp of salt in your shampoo and shake it up. When the bottle is about half way through add another teaspoon. It really works! I have suffered from terribly greasy hair - by the end of the day it looks like I dipped my head in a bowl of oil!!! So far I am really happy with the results and can go 2 days without having to wash my hair.

Use very hot water with vinegar (acts as a disinfectant as well). Excess water must be squeezed out of mop so it should be almost dry.

I don't want to mention specific sites but there are loads of torrent sites that you can download TV series from. You will need a torrent client and a good firewall to start off with. You can google how to work with torrent files.

Nothing much else to do in Jhb besides the mall alone. I wouldn't recommend you going anywhere else if you going to be by yourself. The mall is lovely with loads of shops to pass your time in. Some really nice local ones like Nicci Boutique and Big Blue. Also Woolworths is so much better than the sad ones here in Dubai. In the square there are some really nice outdoor restaurants and there is a Young Designers Emporium upstairs (young and upcoming designers all showcasing their latest designs and the prices are great!). Lots of jewelery stores in The Square as well. There is also a nice craft/tourist shop near the banking mall. If its worth anything, you will love the energy of the people there!

That would probably be the Intercontinental Sandton Sun you are referring to. It is attached to the mall via a skywalk. It is safe as you don't need to walk out on the street to get into the mall from the hotel. The mall that Saharagypsyrose is referring to is The Zone in Rosebank - about 10 minutes drive from Sandton City.

Sorry to disapoint you, I unlocked Iphone 4 this way....................................... Why on earth should I share this, if it was not true?????? I could not believe it, but it worked in my case! (got the info from my provider back home), you just need the new update of Itunes. Are you sure it unlocked? Because anyone who has ever tried to update software on a jailbroken iPhone using iTunes has had all their information wiped out this way.

I purchased one in Dragon mart 2 weeks ago and I must say that I am really impressed with it. Works perfectly! The brand is called JBS, has a 1 year warranty, has a metallic looking "glove" that you can wear on the other hand and has a spongy part where you hold it. Ideal as most have plastic and tends to get too hot. Would definitely recommend this one.

Should I say.... erm... I told you so? Seems like NOBODY even bothered reading my post! rofl Our orders weren't cancelled "to be fair to other customers", though. Ours were cancelled because of Apple's policy of not shipping to addresses known to be used by freight forwarding companies. In other words, they know that the only reason anyone would ship something to that address would be to have it forwarded on out of the country. In your case, they almost certainly assumed that so many iPads being shipped to a single address meant that somebody was stockpiling them to sell. They probably investigated afterwards and discovered that it was actually a freight forwarding address. The interesting thing is that despite what the site says about credit cards needing to have a US billing address, we've been able to order using UAE credit cards with no problem at all. edited by edna.welthorpe on 02/04/2011 Well either way I did try to warn you but my post went on deaf erm blind eyes! The email I received from them read as below (they probably realised afterwards that it was a freight forwarding address): Thank you for your recent Apple order. To ensure that all customers are given equal opportunity to acquire this product we have limited the amount available per customer. Therefore, this order has been cancelled. If you have any questions regarding this order, please contact us at [email protected] or by simply replying to this email. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Sincerely, Apple Online Store Customer Support

Be careful with trying to ship an Apple product via your Shop n Ship account. When the first iPad was released I tried ordering online using the same method and I received an email from apple stating that in order to be fair to other customers, they cannot ship so many products to the same address and automatically cancelled the order. Thankfully my credit card was not charged at that point. Should I say.... erm... I told you so? Seems like NOBODY even bothered reading my post! rofl

Thanks ladies. I've been going through ads on Dubizzle and have noticed quite a few LG dishwashers for sale. Is it because they sell more in this region or because they tend to be more problematic? Have googled known LG dishwasher problems and could not find too much wrong with them. I realise that sometimes you can get a lemon but just want first hand experience on owning one. Also, is it better to purchase new or second hand? Not sure how long we plan to be around so I don't want to be stuck with more white goods to get rid of when we do decide to trek.

The reason your hoovers, electrolux's and other brand vacuum cleaners are going kaput before their times - your staff in vacuuming your DRIVEWAYS!!! I witness TWO of the maids out vacuuming the drive ways in AR this past week while I was walking my dogs - in fact I made one of the dogs stop and sniff so that I could watch for a few minutes! *Like*.... I knew there was something about that magical piece of equipment commonly referred to as a bacume... just use and automatically the dirt disappears. I wonder if they know how to clean it out after? I found my "bacume" getting very hot and shutting off after I fired my useless maid and then found that the bag was not cleaned out despite me having shown her what to do.

The 7.30 pm bedtime for my kids is not so much dictated by how many hours sleep they 'should' have, it's more about adult time and getting some peace and quiet which quite frankly, saves my sanity most days. How do you ladies who put your kids to bed at 10.00pm manage to have any meaningful time to yourself? Is it not important that your children know that you are allowed some downtime too and that means kids in bed 3 hours before you are. I'm not trying to be judgemental, I'm genuinely curious about when you recharge your parenting batteries.... We don't recharge our batteries. Just like the duracell bunny that goes on and on and on and.......

Will keep an eye open on this topic as I want to also buy one of these soon. I was at Dragon Mart yesterday and noticed that they have a few in some of the stores. Also made in China but prices ranged from 160 to 300 in the 3 shops that I saw them in. They were all 1700 watts if I remember correctly.

I realize it's a big risk for both her and the next employer, but she's the one who's willing to do this for the sake of not being away from her husband or having to send her son with her mom back home (neither of which either of them want). And I've heard of quite a few employers who are willing to take the same risk to save on the visa costs. Yasmine, not sure how big the risk is and how many people have actually been fined for letting their housemaid work elsewhere. If my current maid was willing to be sponsored by me, I would have been fine having a part timer come in and cover for my maid. Thanks for understanding ladies. Which part of IT IS ILLEGAL do you not understand? Which part of your opinion is not really cared for do YOU not understand? Who are u ladies? The EW police? Do u work for the CID? OP doesnt ask for this kind of reactions, she is a grown woman and well aware of what is legal or not. If the maid wants to do this, why do YOU care? I never got this bizarre mentality of butting into threads and leaving unwanted commentary, if you dont agree, start your own thread and nag about it... So I guess it's acceptable to break the law unless you get caught? So maybe i should also just walk into stores and start stealing and it would be fine because I woud not be caught. There are reasons as to why the law is there and why you are not allowed to employ a maid who is not under your sponsorship. I don't think the maid in question even knows whether it is legal or not. They are so misled and believe any bs friends and others feed into their minds. I don't really care whether she does it or not but I don't think that the OP should be advertising her illegal services on this board. She should try it somewhere else not on EW then.

OMG! Are you talking about my old maid? Sounds exactly like her! It's so horrible to feed someone very well and then be told that you are not giving them enough food. I really want to know if you were dealing with the same agent and (maybe) got the same maid? If so, this agent needs to be exposed. be careful cheap and nasty I second this! Be very careful. Third this- be careful with agents. We had ours for 12 days, she did all that chiggywiggy said- so its not an unjustified streotype. Also, they eat like horses and complain they are starved- v.v.unpleasnt. She stole, brothers kept calling all day, and int he end she said she apid for her own visa with the agent and we should let her go and work in other houses as the work was too hard....and we didnt feed her enough. Also the agent never found a replacement even though that was part of the agreement.....be very careful Agree. We met the agent online but he stays in duabi. name is shankar( at least thats the name he gave us). The maid was kamala. I think it was a scam....she came over and stared complaining that the agent took money from her. Then quit twice. after 12 days we had enough and sent her home.....lesson learnt and she ate about 15 kgs of rics and all the leftovers from our fridge and my sons birthday party... edited by designbabe on 08/03/2011 Not the same one. The agent we used was named Bimala and the maids name was Tiya. But seriously she also ate like a horse. She used to just scoff up everything she could find in my grocery cupboards.... Apart from the horrible work she did, the laziness, the back chatting, the boyfriends, the so called bro in C4 in MoE... The list is endless! I would advise anyone to stay away from Nepali maids.... And their agents!

I think the person who invented roundabouts needs to be placed against a wall and shot at. It's so nerve wrecking driving around them. My absolute worst one is the trade center roundabout.... It's complete chaos there at any time of day or night! At 11pm they would switch the robots (signals) to flashing amber and that was always such a hit and miss. Don't know if they do that anymore though?

Everyone has completely forgotten to mention to the OP that your salary and benefits are largely dependent on the colour of your skin. If you on the darker side you don't get much whereas if you on the lighter side you get all the below benefits +++. And I always thought it is based on your passport. True to some extent but when they see your skin + passport then they have the :\: look. I talk from personal experience where many people base assumptions on your origins based on how you look.

Title deeds are not always available. We own our apartment and 2 years on we still don't have the title deeds. If you need proof of ownership you can always ask for the 1st page or first 2 pages of the contract. This gives you the name of the landlord as well as the details required to show that he is truly the owner of the property. I vaguely remember someone complaining that they had handed an agent a cheque and deposit money only to discover that the so called agent had conned them and that the property was not his? So many properties are left open during the day so it would be easy for these guys to "show" the property to potential clients and then make them pay upfront.

Can we rather call it "Domestic Helpers" instead of Maids? I just don't like calling them maids. They are actually people that help us in our homes. Errrrrrrrrrrrrr NO- that's what I call my DH and it would only confuse the dear soul!!!!!!!!!! Lol... if you look at any of those application CV's you will see it as DH and I think that the contract you sign also has it listed as DH.
