Again different rules depending on what day it is. I drove on my UAE licence for 4 and half months until I got my Qatar driving licence. No one queried it not even the Captain at the Driving Licence place that approves the licence. He was more interested if I preferred living in Doha to Abu Dhabi. :)

I always use Manasco Transportation and they are very reliable, always on time if not early. 55106863. Think most of the people in my tower at The Pearl use this company as always see them here.

Al Bustan lovely hotel approx 20 minute drive from the hub of Muscat. Shangri-La further out still but amazing setting. If you want to be in Muscat there is The Chedi not so nice beach but amazing restaurants, more of a hotel for the adults. Crowne Plaza, Intercontinental and Grand Hyatt all central located and on the beach. I like them all for different reasons so just depends on what you are looking for really.

I have lived in Oman and Abu Dhabi and have to say Doha is my least favourite. I do believe a place is what you make of it and you have to make the effort to get out and about. A big factor for me was whereabouts to live in Doha. Some areas here would have made me very unhappy living here but thankfully we live in a fab area so that makes Doha okay even though THEY banned the booze a few weeks after we moved in pfft.

You could also do a Mosque Tour @ Fanar (mosque with the spiral shaped tower) - every last Friday of the month - Tel: 44250240 (open 7.30am - 1.00pm Sun - Thurs) or e-mail: [email protected]. Tour lasts 2 hrs - haven't done it yet, but have reserved for next month.... edited by chizz on 31/01/2012 Thanks for the info, was going to give the mosque a miss as already taking them round the Abu Dhabi and Muscat Grand Mosques when we lived there. This one doesn't look up to much compared to them, be happy to be told I am wrong though. :)

Oh dear indeed :\: Not sure what is worse staying in Doha long term or having in laws or anyone else come to think of it staying long term. Hopefully they rethink as don't think there would be much for older people to do here especially 7 months of the year when it is really hot.

Hi I will soon have my first guests to stay since moving to Doha. Thankfully no kids to entertain. Just wondered what are the must do's and places to see during the day. Of course there will be a few nights out too as they love nice food and wine. Any suggestions welcome TIA :)

I had a diamond replaced in a ring a couple months ago from Damas at The Mall. Excellent service, they phoned with a quote and I gave them the go ahead. Can't even tell which diamond had been replaced and the ring had been cleaned and looked all shiny and new. Only took 2 days. I also had been recommended some jewellers at the gold souq but had not long been in Doha and didn't know my way round too well then.

I didn't realise it got so cold here. Not got the wardrobe for a Doha winter. Will know better for next year if I am still here. The floors are so cold to walk on, got my thick socks on. I went to get my washing from outside and it was dry but so cold to touch. I know I shouldn't moan as it will get to 45 + before we know it but being so cold indoors is worth a moan.

Congrats Kelbucko! Only 5 weeks! IrnBru, I'm the same as you, arrived 21 October, and still no card in hand, but fingerprinting done, so fingers crossed. Our excuses were "new rule", "Eid", and they misspelled our names, all of our names, and told us to get the RP and then reapply for the name change. I refused to accept that, so that delayed the process. My husband handed in my passport 2 weeks ago, I'm sure just to keep me from leaving!!;) The excuses we had been getting are so laughable. Think while the new system was being implemented they didn't want to take on any visas or weren't able to. I had to get a certificate RE attested, one that my husband didn't need for his residency. At one point I took my passport back and said stuff it am out of here. Refused to give my passport back until they sorted themselves out so that had delayed mine a bit.

From arriving in country to getting residency visa my DH's took 10 days. Unfortunately just after Ramadan the MOI changed their staff and system which none of them were able to use. I arrived in Doha 24th October and even with a very good PRO that has contacts my residency visa was only complete yesterday! Never have I been in a country that takes so long to complete a visa. I won't even start on my first trip to a Doha hospital this week, that is a whole other story. At least 6 hours of my life I won't get back. ;-) edited by IrnBru on 17/01/2012

You can also pay extra for Al Jazeera sports, think they took over some of the premier league football from OSN. Not 100% though. The box they use for OSN at the Pearl well in my tower anyway is really basic. Keeps freezing and when you restart it takes forever to get going again. We werent' able to use our own OSN HD recordable box we took from Abu Dhabi. So no showtime on demand. I do however watch UK tv most of the time, the internet speed is excellent and no buffering.:)

I know this won't help much but I bought a wine aerator from the inflight magazine on a BA flight a few months ago and its fantastic. Be worth asking around if anyone flying BA soon. Just checked it is a Vinturi I have. edited by IrnBru on 05/01/2012

Yes you can extend the visa each time so you only have to leave every second month. I am doing the same at the moment but discovered flying out to Bahrain is much quicker and easier. When you check in at the airport here you just ask for your return boarding pass. I flew into Bahrain had enough time to pick up somethings at duty free (so much better than Doha airport) and back on the same plane. No immigration or passport control to go through. All done in a morning simple.

I tried the international buffet for Friday Brunch a few weeks ago and was very disappointed. The food was average and not a great choice. The location of the restaurant under the stair isn't great either. Can't remember the price but wasn't worth what we paid. Far more nicer buffets imo.

I too have recently moved from Abu Dhabi and find Qatar way behind in most things. After being in the Middle East for many years I am waiting for the day my DH comes home to tell me we are out of here. China sounds like a great adventure.

It is a joke. My DH got his visa done and dusted within 2 weeks. We have been waiting since Eid for mine. Seemingly a new system has been implemented, nobody seems to be able to work it and the rules change daily. The latest for mine is yet another bit of paper needs to be attested that didn't need done for my husband's visa!!!

I lived in Muscat for 7 years and loved it, have since lived in Abu Dhabi and now Qatar and Muscat been the best by a long way. Ok will admit the shopping isn't great and not so many hotels to dine at as Abu Dhabi and Qatar but I just loved the way of life in Muscat. I used to think the driving was bad in Muscat but it is a dream compared from anywhere else. I lived at The Wave for the last year I was in Muscat and imo the best and most modern housing in Muscat. It is a bit further away but was worth the extra travel to and from BSM. You are so lucky to get the offer to move to Muscat. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Will just stick with BA then as I had enough of changing terminals in the pre T5 days. Used KLM when I was in Abu Dhabi as better flight times into Aberdeen but notice the return to Doha is a very tight time for connecting in Amsterdam. Thanks

So would be ok going to Aberdeen but wouldn't get to check my luggage all the way through on the way back with BMI. Might just stick with KLM or BA if that is the case. Will hopefully hear from someone who has done the Aberdeen flight recently. Thanks

Won't stop us from going to the Pearl to enjoy a nice meal out ... I've never understood why people would take the risk of drinking while out for dinner and then driving home anyway. Err who said anything about drinking and driving!!!! edited by IrnBru on 10/12/2011

Yes it is true. Such a shame as restaurants that aren't busy as it is will close as not enough business on food alone. The tumbleweed will start rolling in shortly.

Great ideas from everyone to get into Christmas Spirit except the one about putting the a/c to really cold.:\: This is the first Christmas without my daughter as she has work commitments but I still have the tree and decs up, along with the Christmas music and I love it when it starts to get dark and I put the tree lights on and light the candles. edited by IrnBru on 08/12/2011

Oh no starting to wish I was going home to UK for Christmas now as at least I would have the heating inside. My apartment is freezing here, sitting wrapped up with a fleece blanket while I type with freezing cold fingers. Suppose over the years I have gotten used to hot weather and turned into a bit of a woose. Will be on moaning again in the summer when its too hot. :\:

I lost a diamond in my engagement ring a few years back and got the guys at Shine (in the gold souk area) to replace it for me. They are very trustworthy and were great - it was a small one but a square one and I lost it on holidays in Australia but couldn't get it replaced there as it wasn't a standard cut - no problem getting it done here. When you turn the corner from Al Fardan building coming off Grand Hamad street Shine is just in a little laneway about 100 m up on the right hand side (just ask someone and they'll probably be able to head you in the right direction - they are pretty well known.) Thank you, directions noted.

Lol I have just looked up the recipe on Videojug and thought that sounds easy enough. Might just nip into Megamart and buy a pack anyway and maybe just maybe might buy the ingredients and make some for the big day. Oh I know what you mean about D & D, I keep picking up so many things then do a quick conversion back to pounds then put half of it back again. Thank you ladies

I went for a look round last week and picked up the plan of the stores too. Once everything is open it will be a good enough mall for all of us that live near it. Like everywhere else I have lived in Middle East, a new mall opening is a big thing and draws in lots of people to begin with no matter where you live in town. edited by IrnBru on 16/11/2011

Glad you liked it Irnbru! I love their food :) Your name suggests you are Scottish (like me!), I do love a wee spot of Irn Bru too!! Yeah Scottish too and can't beat Irn Bru with a chippie and a great cure if feeling rough from the night before. Hope you enjoyed your Korma @ ccdoha. Might have to give Star of India a try next time. Anyone had any other kind of food delivered, pizza etc? I tried ordering a Papa Johns pizza but they don't deliver out here. Will be a few more options once the food places at Lagoona Mall open.
