Dear Breige As it has already been suggested, have a look at other threads as there have been many in the past two weeks. it is not an easy topic. To be fair, we do not know what your maids job entails and what you are offering may be very fair and reasonable . The "average " maid as people refer to may not be with alot of the families for a long time and this is why people may think higher salaries are not in line. if a maid is with a family a long time 5 - 10 years it is not unreasonable to be giving them a higher salary than the " average ". Yet, if you were to compare the average salary of long term maids with one family maybe there would be earning over 2000 dhs and that would be the" average " for that segment. Goes back to compare like with like ! More responsibilty and depending on how much your maid runs the house hold will determine if one should pay more or less and if you can afford and she is worth it, don't screw the maids, be reasonable and fair. One lady will have a maid worth 1500 dhs and other 2500 dhs but quite sure their roles within the homes are very different. One has to compare like with like . Your maid will have developed expensive taste in food because our income /conditions allow it. No harm in her improving her diet and taste in food but only if she can afford it and not putting additional strain on you either emotionally or finanically. Not wise to bring shampoo back from Uk but if you have the luggage allowance ? most people wouldn't. If you are not working and have the time start pricing the toiletries for a month and then you can decide if it is reasonable for you to pay for all. I am sure alot of women here in Dubai on reasonable incomes use cheaper brands especially as times are tough maybe your maid needs to do similar. Not wise to have boyfriend stay at your home. Good luck

What nationality is she ? . There are flipino maids there, as like anywhere else . Find out from the company you are going with if there are other expats like you one can contact now before you go. Computer may not be much help for Egypt, it is not like here . Just look at any program on TV or ask one who has visited or lived there.

It is unlikely selective hearing. The child is struggling I bet . Your poor daughter needs good help. If you find you cannot get the help here in UAE but do give doctors a chance here first and if you are from UK there are specialists in E N T in Queens square in London . My s i l mother went there for help, don't know the full out come and it varies from person to person. You may have to go private to get easier access if the need arises. I am sure there are other places to go to also. I wish you well.

Shocking but has been waiting to happen in North Africa for a long time,Tunsia is the first of many countries in North Africa that could boil over. There are also countries in the Middle East where same could happen any day. Have you seen about Jordan also ?

Dear SalsB OHHHHHHHH Family feuds, and so many suffer from it, probably everyone in one way or another. Is you eldest going to be given anything in the will or are you just referring to jewelery ? Don't think it was a wise move to tell your eldest daughter, sometime things are best left unsaid .Who knows maybe she could still change it but unfortunately now more bitterness and anger has been passed on to your daughter. Not sure if this is a wise move : but if you have a good relationship with your mother in law , why don't you speak with her gently and say how hurt you are if your oldest is to receive nothing at all in the will . If you don't have a good relationship that may be part of the issue. Your husband gave your valuable information now maybe you did not realise it before. Try and mend the situation somehow before it gets even worse but don't expect your M I L to change her will to suit you.

Simpleasabc I think you are not alone in this situation and even though some people may have a maid they may not afford other things but need a maid to help the household manage it will depend on where there needs are. There are many here where money does not appear to be an issue but who knows ? One constantly hears comments from people who are small minded and thoughtless.A maid may be a luxury for one family but essential for survival for another family. Here's to the situation improving for everyone over the coming year and wise one takes a job because it is better than no job at all. Wish they could really teach that to younger generations. Times are tough !

Shaf, Ask your telephone company to give you a complete print out of your calls. On your phone won't count as you may have either deleted incoming or received calls. ( not saying your have ) This will be easier for you then with proof , you take it up with the Police/ RTA. It depends how strongly you feel but if you have the proof maybe you should follow up and more good will come from it and also let the police know you are not a walk over or made of money. Good luck edited by jewelsmiddle on 14/01/2011

Natashata A number of years ago this was the procedure but don't know if it still holds true. The only way around to avoid loosing your money is if she found a job with another employer and the visa was transferred, then your money would then be refunded. Sounds like she needed to have a higher salary but started with you to get her going.I am sure your may be aware sometimes maids try things on if they are getting either direct or indirect pressure from home or other maids.Hope you get it resolved and remain as calm as you can. We all get caught out in one way or another dealing with such different cultures and companies here and it is very irritating and puts a big hole in our pockets . Good luck

Why don't you do a test run and learn how it works then it may be alot easier to show and explain to your parents rather than 3 rd hand information. Start by paying a visit to metro station to buy an NOL card and then take the bus or better still go on the metro also etc etc . You will enjoy the expierence and it will also be an education. Take the children if you have any. Day out ! Enjoy

Don't know how your voice is but good for you to be broad minded to think you may benefit from classes to soften accent. Having said that don't change completely. Some accents are really hard on ones hearing , and some of the same people use alot of slang and people think they are funny yet are not within the context of the wider world. Unfortunately I do not know anyone who does classes but may I suggest you contact Dutac at Mall of Emirates and I suggest to try to meet one of the drama teachers as they may be able to help you even if they do not hold such classes currently. Don't just go by what reception tell you. I will ask around and if I learn anything that may be of use to you I will put it on a thread. Good luck

Dear AdviceSeeker Thank you, but you are not been rude at all because you don't get my posting. It can be difficult to keep track of postings and we all may get uptight and upset by peoples comments and lose the bigger picture. My point is always the same, Remain fair and reasonable. Not necessary to feel sorry for maid as their husbands/children may be back in their home country ( not referring to mothers or fathers but their own husband /children as are most maids here ). It was written to remind some posters of facts. The salary the original poster is giving sounds fair but unless we all know the detail of the job and responsibilites involved we really cannot be too opinionated and I am not requesting the o p gives us that information as I personally don't need to know.I have referred to this in posting , depending on job involved and responsibilities will have an impact on salary given. One needs to compare like with like. As I asked in the thread , did the maid or the employer realise how expensive it would be to get out of Victory Heights before the contract was agreed but do not recall seeing a reply. So this could be the reason why the mais is asking / or maybe she is pushing the boundaries. A Maid is no different to any other westerner who may find looking after a family expensive and am sure in the past and again in the future westerners will ask employers for more benefits but currently it is not so easy to do so. Sometimes employers say yes and other times they saw no, but it is not necessary to be off hand or aggressive, just to be fair and reasonable. Might be easier for everyone reading threads if we all agreed on the same definition /expectations of a maid so when discussing we are all seeing it clearer and reduce people getting people so upset. Some people treat maids like slaves and others do not, some maids look after Children others do not, some maids cook and clean others do not. Some maids take on alot of responsibility and sort out workmen/gardens others do not. Some maids just clean. Therefore salaries vary alot and 1200 dhs may be a good salary for one type of maid and 3000 dhs may be fair for different type of maid. Have a good day. AdviceSeeker replied : jewelsmiddle wrote: Dear Sandy Dodd You are sounding a little envious , Uk had been doing very very well but greed too over like in most places and see the mess the world is in now. It is hard times for everyone . There was a time when land was very cheap in the UK, don't begrudge people for wanting to improve their quality of life. These maids do not earn a fortune. If someone is paying 2000 or 3000 dhs a month maybe they are doing the work and taking on alot more responsibility to reflect a better salary. Running a home is under rated and some people are very lucky to have excellent maids and others have maids that do the job fine. How many of us have left our husbands or wives and children back in home countries and sacrifice in order to support back home. There are a few married people ( not separated or divorced ) living here from UK or other western countries who for what ever reason may have their family back in the Uk or another western country but it is not the norm. it is the norm for most low paid workers / maids. Good evening. Sorry julesmiddle, not meaning to be rude, but I really don't get your post at all :S Are you saying, because these maids/ low paid workers come out here to make their lives better for their families and choose to do so by leaving behind their partners/kids that we should feel sorry for them and therefore pay more to compensate?

If they are the trees that are all over Dubai, you could cut them to the ground and they will still grow back very fast. Any gardner you see, ask them and they could organise it for you or just contact any gardening company or pop into Dubai Garden centre

Summer Dream, it is evident you are not and others taking on board the word " Custom". Unfortunately living in Dubai people to not learn sufficient about other cultures to appreciate Culture and Custom is very important in many cultures in the world still in this day and age of 2011. Maybe some customs need up dating but many westerners could really learn from some countries customs. Just remember if you marry him , he is traditionalist and will not change but may adjust somewhat with your gentle influence but remember what he is now is what he will be in relation to the above. Try and be more understanding of where she is coming from rather than mocking her. I understand where this lady is coming from , Doesn't anyone ?

Yes 13 months salary a year. As you have not detailed what you expect your maid to do and if your a working mother or not : Assuming she cleans the Villa and possibily looks after the children during the day when needs be. It is not unreasonable to have her baby sit one or two nights a week for the salary you have quoted . If you always ask her to baby sit at the weekend on a Thursday and Friday night rather than during the week on a regular basis , it would not give her much time off to relax and see her friends so maybe then additional payment would be deemed fair, but not so if it is occasional . But if your situation altered and you were going out 5 times a week, it would be reasonable to give her some additional payment as otherwise the woman never gets a rest. There are many different types of families here, in some cases both parents work and some parents go out alot others don't. Anyone expecting a maid to work from dawn to dusk and babysit 5 times a week deserves a better salary, hence one finds variations in salaries and conditions. Ladies can get very upset over these subjects but one needs to compare like with like for the salary offered . Mum2girls , You sound very reasonable and fair. She is lucky to have a boss like you. Raising expections too high can be dangerous as you noted. Good Luck

monkapala No one said anything about paying for taxis twice a week, only when she want to have her day off on friday. Just help the maid out with cost so she can enjoy her free time. One does not have to pay taxi to M O E but if there is no bus nearby drive them or taxi them to nearest place/bus stop. Times are tough for everyone , and the lower paid also. As you pointed out maids are finding it very expensive if they go back to home for visit and go thru alot of cash. Just be reasonable.

It is not unreasonable if you are living so far out of the city ( Satwa is a place alot of maids meet at ) and no good public affordable transport to meet her along the way either . Why not , Pay for taxi to nearest Bus stop / drive or pick her up for her days off or one or the other. Be reasonable : For a maid to pay a large sum of her salary to transport herself to spend free time with friends where she can then return to her place of employment in good spirits is not fair . She probably had no idea the cost of transport when you employed her , did you ? Don't know what your situation is but if she is working full time and your are both working or she is expected to do most of the running of the house and she is looking after house/ animals/ children a salary of 1900 dhs is not unreasonable . How much is transport from Victory heights to Mall of Emirates, I would guestimate about 50 dirhams each way by Taxi or maybe abit more , if so , is it reasonable to ask a low paid person to pay such a chunk from their salary. Would you be happy paying a simliar amount from your salary to relax at a wekend if you earned 1900 dhs ? Having a content household means give and take , make it easier for her to get back to work on time and reduce your own stress and the households. As regards yearly flight home, check your contract. It can be altered when you renew it if you wish to yearly. Maids are just like some E W posters, and love to wind one another up. Good luck

Whether you have children or not, it is awful when people take out their children to restaurants and do not teach them how to behave, probably because they themselves do not know how to behave eg to be considerate of others. Children frequently allowed to run around in Restaurants/Hotels, shout, scream and cry and take clothes and shoes off and run around in bare feet as if they are at home and parents do very little or nothing to keep them quiet. Not all parents are selfish and thoughtless but unfortunately many are, and don't say each to their own. If we all followed E W guidelines/ advice tips which are there to help us all live in better harmony wouldn' t it be alot nicer in Dubai. Just look at the world we live in, not much thought for others, hence the mess the world is in financially and otherwise.

Why bother with a head set. Using a mobile handset phone ( like a normal house phone) is alot easier. Linksy's is a brand that works well.
