probably very true. imo being judgemental is human nature - we all do it to a degree. The difference is whether we voice it or mind our own business !!

Why he like this before you got married ? Some indication must have shown even if you did not realise it at the time ? Is he depressed or very worried ?

But if you grew up in a country with millions and millions of people and not alot of space, your view would be different. This is why some cultures do not give any space to others and stand so close side by side as if on top of you.It is the way of life and survival in their country and not seen as rude. Having said that I do get fed up with certain nationalities who do it and if I can I avoid the situations. What I don't get is that Western people are expected to understand the nuances of other cultures that we consider "rude", which is fine, but why aren't other nationalities "expected" to understand Western cultures/nuances? For example: when in a store and talking to a sales person, another person - and all my experiences have been with two different but similar nationalities - will boldly interrupt my conversation and start talking to the salesperson as if I wasn't there at all. I have to ask them "Am I invisible? Let me finish and then you can ask your question". Now here I'm perceived as being "rude". Now, I get this may be a cultural thing, but why aren't other nationalities expected to "understand" different Western cultures? When standing in a bank or at an ATM, again, the same two nationalities - stand so close you can feel them breathing on the back of your neck. Westerners - from the US at least - have this thing about "space". The space between myself and the length of my arm is my space. I, out of habit, give this space to everyone. If other nationalities were asked to learn my culture, then they would understand that and would keep their distance from me. They would also understand that we wait our turn if we need assistance and a salesperson is busy with another customer.

Here here . I actually like listening to all the views and opinions of other cultures. I have been to many countries in my life and would always have to make my routines fit in with that country. Now, sometimes I work the countries cultures around mine. Say for instance, i used to cook a dinner, served as one meal on a plate, my boyfriend is used to having a buffet style dinner. At first I was like, no way, what a waste of time and effort but not I have adapted. I never really used to like seeing kids out late. (to an extent I still dont now) however, I realise that having kids doesnt mean that your life has to stop at 7pm when they have to go to bed and you sit at home all night. Probably the biggest thing I have learnt about being here is that families really love eachother and spend a lt of time together, sisters and brothers would dod anything for eachother and the parents are the most respected thing. I never really saw family time in the UK as such, we all just sat in different rooms watching our own tv programmes and living out lives. This is something that I cant wait to do with my own family. Embrace rather than be judgemental

I was informed this week that in Uk the minority ( non White ) are only 8 % of the population. Has anyone heard of this figure ? [i'>Imagine walking down the street of your hometown and 99 percent of the people you met were foreigners[/i'> Like half the big cities in the UK !!! lol !! HALF the cities in the UK have 99% non-British residents (and I don't mean non-white because, guess what, there are lots of non-white Brits)? I don't think even the Daily Mail goes as far as that claim!

Good for you, if someone wants something , just ask, they might just be given it. Some people think once outside the front of the villa even if in your walls ,you can take it. wow bornconfused, people never cease to amaze me. I'm glad your houseboy saw them. I know. It amazed me but wasn't too surprised by this couple in the first place. They were quite rude and agressive during the purchase of other plants. And on top of the plants they wanted everything under the sun from inside our house that we weren't getting rid of. But the two plants they stole were in massive clay pots that were quite expensive. Needless to say we got them back and they got a fine for theft.

Thought I had read they had spoken on the phone and the couple were at the Abu Dhabi race track so there must have been a phone number exchange. Unable to find it on the thread so maybe orginal poster deleted it. Look forward to hearing if there is any developments in the coming week. I donno, sounds pretty cut and dried to me. Money taken for table. Table and family disappear. Unless of course the op waited way too long to get the table and did not leave a phone # with the people who sold the table and the seller did not give a receipt. Either way, the money was given and table not given. So then, lets see what transpires lol

Judge and jury before full facts are revealed ! oh h e ll. Just list their full names. Addresses, description ...they stole your money and table. If you can prove you gave the money to them and their cargo is still on the dock, maybe something could be done. who knows unless you try

I class those who dress inappropriately when in the Middle East very very rude and offensive but others may not think so as they want the freedom to do as they wish where ever they live.

Good advice ! Caveat emptor.just the words she wanted to hear. Well it is isn't it? It's a lesson learnt, a hard one and sympathy and all that but who leaves a deposit of that size to complete strangers? Quite obviously there are people who do. Is it a case of trusting your 'own' people? You should never pass money over to anyone unless you can afford to lose it regardless of colour, religion or nationality. Dubai is full of dodgy brits!

What is rude in one country is not always the same in another. hence we need to mix with many cultures to broaden our knowledge. I have found some people can be quite rude. We are not all the same. Some may think they are better than others. But we all know they arent!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I think there is, people say especially very long timers , there are different rules and expats do seem to get it alot tougher and locals get off with things they do which are seen as unfair /wrong or illegal Hi Is there some kind of tension between the expats and locals or resentment there?

Dr Janetta is great but if someone is looking for a gentle lady, they may not handle her directness and may view her as not gentle. She is gentle in her treatments and she always makes me laugh. I like Dr Janeta at Infinity Polyclinic on Al Wasl Rd and we always end up having a laugh over a few things which does make for a more enjoyable appointment than some of the miseries in town! edited by jewelsmiddle on 01/04/2011

I think this comment below is very very valid and one does not need an expert to know but people do appear to need an expert to say it so it is valid. Paying children for successes is not the best way but life is so so competitive with everything, it is crazy. Life is not always positive and children and adults need to learn both . Personally I don't like the comment people should only mix with positive people as negative people pull one down. We are all positive and negative at various stages and points in our lives and we all need to be more understanding of others. Those who are negative all of the time may have an illness and this is different and need professional help. Some expert recently said that we should not praise our children for doing what is required of them, homework, cleaning up etc, as this is judging them. How can we apply this to other people?

He may only have so much money to go around so cuts need to be made somewhere. GirlAnachronism's DH reminded me that my mother used to say that everyone is cheap in their own way ... For example, my DH will take me out to a very expensive restaurant, no problem, but refuses to take a taxi to get there because it costs too much. I wear Jimmy Choo shoes, but hoard plastic sandwich baggies. So for a Thursday thread: in what way are you cheap?

Your not a control freak and think most women go through doubt at some point and generally started by others putting doubt in their mind. I recall this happening to me ( doubt put in my head by other women) years ago for a time and it was listening to these insecure expats . not everyones husband will have an affair, depends on your marriage. Good luck Good idea to talk with him about your concerns. When he gets home next week I will try and have a chat about this - I need to approach it in the right way or I'll just seem like a control freak (I am, but that's not what this is about). SueB, I would love to get in touch if you wouldn't mind! Thanks all :) I'll be back later with some pampas grass stories

Good way to start training your children. Wish I could have but not possible at the time. Earlier they start to learn the better I say, ( just like the muppets) Are you mad?????????????????? Ha ha it has been said!! What I'm looking for is an a/c I pay so much into a month and she has a card but can't go over the limit - she's 13 so no student ID. Don't know if I fancy the idea of giving her an additional card on our a/c knowing how efficient the banks are here !!

Of course they may be , that is what they have done for a very long time or had others to clean for them. There was plenty od desert to leave it on until we all came. And from my observation, the 'native' population of this fine country are the worst offenders! For what reason it could be any one from your list. And I guess the others have taken the "when in rome" view.

51. Why do people get upset about others dress in the UAE / Dubai especially ? As the government don't appear to deal with it themselves and experienced, well seasoned expats with respect for the country they are living in , like some form of dress code and cover up. One of the many reasons they, the expats , have been overall content living in Middle East , not wanting to deal with issues in their own countries back home as people have so many human rights now , victims appear to do best. Need , Shoulders covered and to the knees and no see through clothes ! Not many "Thursday" threads have been started today so heres some ideas to get it going ;)
