You can't have read the whole thread, QF2011, some people seem to have been blaming "immigrants" for these riots. I object to it. I think anyone with half a brain can see that the appalling bad behaviour is more age than race related. The people arrested and charged have ranged from an 11 year old to a 50 something person, with more adults than children in the mix. Your point is? Well, I really don't need another spat on here tonight, but according to most of the media, over half those arrested are under 18. The rest were fully paid up members of the WI. Goodnight!

I just wish people would actually read the words he actually spoke..........instead using a mistranslation of his Latin quote.......to create a bogeyman to frighten the children and stifle all intelligent rational debate for two generations.

Thanks for bringing us the positive, from the front line, as it were, Custard Apple. As you say, most people cannot help but be impressed by the calm dignity of the father of one of the lads killed in the Birmingham hit-and-run (goodness, I do believe he's an immigrant), nor by the attitude of the Malaysian guy who was attacked by rioters pretending to help him (goodness me, also a would-be-immigrant). Actually, I didn't believe I would ever say this, but old Cameron's speech this afternoon (possibly morning in UK?) was quite impressive, too. I still think if there had been more leadership present after Mark Duggan was killed in Tottenham, things would probably not have reached this pass. Why do you keep bringing up immigrants? Where is it in these thread any relationship between the riots and immigration? Why are you making a link, even in jest? Thou doth protest too much on this issue. I blame that Enoch.........

Interesting audio on the talk about removing council houses for anyone found to be involved with the looting (hope I said that as FACTUALLY as possible) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14492114?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Not quite the same as claiming that one council had already started evicting tenants!;) Ok ok. To be fair Reds did correct herself in the very next post with the tweet she found, which contained the key word WILL - future tense. Leave it be hey. Oh Lord..........didn't you see the wink? It never ceases to amaze me how many people justify a catty remark and pass it off as humour, just because they put a wink! No need to say it in the first place IMHO. Back ON topic. While in theory it's a justified punishment, making hundreds of people homeless is only going to make the situation worse, not any better. Now...........come on there............I didn't resurrect the spat by posting on the topic again with a snide little dig...........but before I leave the fray I would like to say this..........misquotes, partial truths and poorly digested information are the very lifeblood of discord, not just in cyberspace but in real life. Riots such as the latest horrors in London, or Toxteth . Manchester, Tottenham and Brixton over the last twenty to thirty years have nearly always been started by misinformation spreading like wildfire and growing in the process. Let's try to stick to the facts.

This is a tweet I received from BBC London News: Greenwich Council: will seek the eviction of any council tenants if they are found to have been engaged in criminal activities. Maybe it is 'tommyrot' I'm only asking the question. Calm down Then perhaps you should have posted exactly the above.....................not your highly coloured version. Just the facts will do....... Goodness - I apologise. I never intented to 'highly colour' it at all. If we're all talking facts then let's stop all this tripe about prison ships and bringing back military service - it won't happen. So, my question remains - what would you do with them? You don't do irony do you? And...........I have no more idea than you do on how we repair broken Britain........but let's just stick to the facts and keep the polytech common room politics out of it. Oh of course, I forgot.......it's all Maggies fault isn't it..........much easier to stick to the old class war cliches than to try to think outside the box. Otherwise, it's just all too sad.

Some councils are already evicting those who have been charged in the riots. I'm not sure about this - where will they go, they're already deprived and so tax payers will end up supporting in shelters and the cycle goes on - what do you think? Where on earth are you getting your information? Do you honestly think that any council department could move so quickly? And even if true (of which I'm, with all due respect, highly sceptical) given that the rioters are almost all extremely young.......are you trying to say that their parents are being evicted for their children's ALLEGED crimes......given that you use the term "charged" .......I think in UK innocent till proven still stands...no? Please, this is tommyrot.

just googled riots in France : nothing except the government is worried that the economic situation in France is similar to the UK and they are worried riots will start. I was listenning to the BBC on the radio, they were interviewing some looters: Nothing can happen to us as prisons are full so the police have no option but to let us off. ..so no punishement for their actions...but where are the parents?? The parents are probably writing their shopping list for the next round of looting!

Selling delinquent debts to banks/collection agencies is not restricted to the UK - it can be done anywhere the UAE bank can find a buyer for the debt. So the partners aren't off the hook either if the bank(s) can track them down. why would the partner be involved if the debt is in his name? Because theyre married A spouse would only be involved insofar as liens on any joint property. But I think in this case the OP is referring to BUSINESS partners, no? And from what I've read, they've flown the coop to a country other than UK. To the OP........the banks in UAE can sell on the debt, but not the powers to recover they have there........in the UK the law does recognise that you cannot get blood from a stone. There has been no jailing for debt for over a century.........and if debt collectors use threatening measures, they are breaking the law. Your friend should speak to the Citizen's Advice Bureau.

I really really wonder just what question the OP was asking. Seems to boil down to two options...........is it ok, or is it wise. Perhaps if she were to come back and define her search terms she might get the advice she needs. Given her marital status, I'd say stay put, get a good lawyer and be very, very careful.

Sorry, LT, I have to disagree here. The OP said " I am SO fed up with the blue rinse set [u'>thinking[/u'> that they can [u'>bully and push others around[/u'>". Yes, you can insert any other age group or nationality that you like, and I would still agree with the OP (if indeed I have interpreted her post correctly) that because that person is of that particular age, nationality, hair colour, gender, s3xual orientation or whatever, does not AUTOMATICALLY give them the right to be[u'> rude and bullying and disrespectful[/u'> of others in order to gain the recognition that they may deserve. As I said, you need to give respect in order to earn respect. If you're pushing in front of all and sundry - young or old, black, white or purple - and being rude about it, what is that teaching the people you're pushing in front of? Yes, I still maintain that you should respect your elders and offer up your seat, etc, etc - and on numerous occasions I have been the first person to do so - but if someone is rude and bullying just because they think they deserve the seat, etc, I would probably not give it to them on principle. Did you read ANYTHING at all I wrote in my two posts.......you should not condone rudeness in anyone......nor should you condemn an entire race, religion or age group for the fault of a few. Perhaps the OP should run her little tantie past her own mother, for her comments..

Amy's father, guilt or denial? Strange family dynamic, he was in NY driving a taxi and I believe his wife was in London? No idea what went on there, haven't perused the papers or net about this, but it seems the poor girl was ripe to get hooked on something when she met the man who became her husband and then her ex. I'm afraid this Blake bloke is the true villain, to me. The parents couldn't help. God forbid any of us, as parents, land up in a similar situation. Actually...........father was on a US trip touring as a singer........his former career as part time pub singer reinvented by his daughter's success. Amy Winehouse is just another of the poor sad souls sacrificed to failed parents dreams. From Judy Garland to Michael Jackson..........not forgetting Tiger Woods. ETA........the awful husband was inevitable......symptom. not cause. edited by Livelytrish on 27/07/2011

Interestingly, her father says Amy has not been dependant on drugs for 3 years and had not had a drink for 3 weeks before her death... Obviously her recent attempts to perform live would seem to contradict that but maybe we've been too quick to judge..who knows..She clearly had a number of issues throughout her life but i was heartened to also read that according to her family she was at last enjoying happier times and they were drawing comfort from that. Though in my opinion that somehow makes it seem even more tragic.. Sorry, but the man is delusional .............he has built a career out of being her father. Guilt alone will be enough to make him lose touch with reality.

Please don't fall for the snake oil salesmen...........and please don't assume that the conventional docs are wrong (unless they actually said it was "JUST" IBS in which case please find yourself a more sympathetic doc..) IBS can be crippling. But it is manageable, once you accept it as a long term condition, find the correct medication and diet/eating patterns.......and stop yourself from getting wound up about it. As a very wise Doctor once told me, the digestive system is the most emotionally sensitive part of the body........hunting for an illusory magic alternative cure will do nothing but lead to more stress........hence more symptoms....in any case, good luck.

Well.............. speaking as an OAP, Bue Cow.......firstly had you made your little rant about people of a certain race, or gender orientation, you would have been rightly howled down on this forum for discrimination (and possibly prosecuted in the UK). Secondly, what on earth makes you think that only the "Blue rinse brigade" act rudely? There are rude people of all ages. And thirdly one day...........you will be an OAP ......and hopefully will have learned sufficient wisdom and good manners not to generalise about race, gender .....or age.

She has effectively abandoned her animals - you can report her for that and there is a fine involved. What pet owner does that. I'd be calling her on those number - if they work - and tell her she needs to make alternative arrangements as you have to go away. Please be very careful about involving the Municipality.......yes, the owner might be penalised but if the dogs are deemed abandoned then they will come under the auspices of DM.........and that rarely ends happily.

@ Rumour, women lib movement did more harm than good! that's quite possible the stupidest thing you've said so far (and that's counting your "advice" on how to raise children you don't yet have). Let's see: - right to vote - right to have access to contraception - right to terminate unwanted pregnancies - right to own property - access to education - maternity leaves / pregnancy discrimination act - the fight against se*ual harassment - the right to say NO and mean NO - recognising domestic violence and worse to name but a few! I know this is totally off topic but I couldnt let that be said ... you do know that women have been intimidated, brutalised and emprisoned fighting for those rights? Show some respect! ERRRR...........I think it was my mother's and my generation who fought for, and won those rights? What have you done for your *** today? Sometimes I despair of you girls. ETA.......none of these rights were dependent on abrogating our maternal responsibilities........we worked around our children's most vulnerable years. edited by Livelytrish on 13/07/2011

Not prejudiced at all..........just my opinion..........sorry if it doesn't concur with yours. And no, not just Dubai........although it does seem to be a common phenomenon there.possibly because UAE is a far harsher economic reality than many people realised, but IMHO......small children should have their mother as primary care giver. That may not sit too well with the budget, or one's sense of self importance.........but not only the studies, but millennia of generations' experience would appear to prove it as a fact. Sometimes I seriously wonder what an alien observer would think of some of the posts on EW..............between the pleas for help on infertility ........and the posts looking for day care for weeks old babes....... it does seem as though society sends out some very conflicting signals today. Sad.

I think the reason rumour felt the need the comment is because the title clearly asked the question "is 3 years too young for summer camp?" and she was giving her opinion - which is YES. I myself find it hard to understand why young children who cannot communicate their needs are sent to the care of fairly unqualifed caregivers here when their mothers don't even work. Children need to be socialised but not from birth to 3 years - those are the ages when mothers are the most important and while daycares and nurseries are hugely popular, strangers who have no emotional attachment to our kids spending large parts of the days bringing up really young children is detrimental to our society. I know of 1 year olds in the UK who spend 8 am- 6 pm in nursery and come home and fall asleep. Dr. Peter cooks book- mothering denied is an excellent book to read- especially if it is your choice socially to put your really young child in a nursery facilty when most studies show they are less stressed and do better in school in later years if they are at home with thier mother. "the NICHD Network reported in American Educational Research Journal (39, 133-164) that, although higher quality childcare was associated with better cognitive performance at four and a half years, the more time during these years that these children had spent in any type of non-maternal childcare, regardless of its quality, the more assertiveness, disobedience and aggression they showed with adults, both in kindergarten and at home." NICHD studies also found that when children spent more time in childcare, their mothers displayed less sensitivity when interacting with them at six, 15, 24, and 36 months of age. Sensitive, responsive mothering through the early years was the best predictor of social competence at six years, which in turn predicts schooling success. Early childcare also precludes longer breastfeeding, which, besides better health, leads to significantly higher IQs in adults. For example, those breastfed for 9 months, averaged 6 points higher IQ as young adults. (Journal of the American Medical Association, May 8, 2002). The movement for women's "liberation", while advancing women in the workplace, devalued and undermined their role as mothers. This denied infants' needs for mothering, and mothers' needs to provide it. There was another long term survery done by Penelope Leach in 1997, which also mirroed the same result. Children who spent early years with their mothers, by the third grade, were better , behaved, less aggressive and had higher etst scores. Just joining the debate- not trying to offend anybody...:) Agree absolutely.............and the OP's post gave away her motivation..........she has a job interview. Sorry but in my opinion........sometimes you can't have it all, all at once. Small children need real care.........not bargain basement straight off the boat third world keepers.

In 2005 I did the sums on buying versus renting in Dubai...........in order to break even on buying I needed an increase year on year of 1O% property value. What people forget are the following.......if you have to mortgage you have to pay interest......which is dead money. If you use your own money, you lose the interest income..........and most importantly, the legal costs/hidden charges means it would take years before the initial start up costs are covered. And that's not even taking into consideration maintenance and housing fees. And.......I did that calculation before the crash. In a falling market.......I'd let a landlord take the strain.

Did the US not modify the double jeopardy rule like many other western countries to allow someone to be re-tried for offences such as murder, manslaughter etc. if there is fresh compelling evidence or something? I know it was changed in the UK, can never keep up with US law though as it is just so different in every state!!! No. In the OJ Simpson case, the family of Nicole and her friend actually tried him civilly, I think the first time he was found guilty, but when he appealed the guilty verdict was overturned - I could be wrong on that. OJ was found not guilty in the criminal trial, liable in the civil case, and subsequently found guilty on an unrelated robbery charge and sentenced to ten years in prison. Neither his first nor his second criminal trial reflected well on the US justice system.

For a defense of insanity the defendant has to plead insanity, it is not up to the jury to decide she was unfit. I am aware of that. But the defendant can be can also be found unfit to plead.......by virtue of insanity. Which happens pre trial. But since neither of these options were taken, the jury went for their best option to achieve the same result. In my opinion anyway. Nothing will bring back the poor little baby. Any other verdict would just have been vengeance. edited by Livelytrish on 05/07/2011 Why is vengeance wrong? Is that not what the laws are based on an eye for an eye and all that? It should never have been taken to trial........the girl is obviously barking, of course she killed her baby....but in a more civilised legal system she would have been deemed not fit to plead. She belongs in a mental institution, not in jail. And in spite of a total circus of a trial, twelve ordinary human beings had more sense and compassion than all the lawyers, and all the legal and media pundits - it's not an ideal verdict, given the choices they had, but a fair one. The saddest people in the whole case are the poor, poor grandparents. My heart goes out to them.

Might it not be best to fly the cats to UK where they can spend their quarantine in an approved facility? Not the cheapest, but the safest option. DKC should have a list of quarantine premises, hopefully the OP can find one reasonably close to home so she can visit.
