Actually, that research refers to UAE nationals, not the wider population......and the causes are perfectly obvious........same reason as the terrifying Diabetes figures. But for everyone else............it's equally obvious, traffic, DEWA misbilling, Yesmmaaaaaaaaamsir etc. Or just refer to the Overheard in MacDonalds thread. Funny how MickeyD's plays a role in both cases!! edited by Livelytrish on 01/02/2011

Rent a villa in Cyprus through ownersdirect. Will still be very hot, so you need one with a pool. Rent an apartment in Malaysia. The flights are not terribly cheap, but it's not that expensive once you are over there. Cyprus is soooo expensive for food much more expensive than here !!! True.........but the wine's cheap!

Think LivelyTrish is a vet nurse, so worth listening to? Will still come and take her if you think she needs it? Won't have car tomorrow, can someone else offer to take her tomorrow? Not a vet nurse, just a crazy cat lady of many many years experience.

Tell her to take the London job. I think she should take the London job too, but she says this job is her dream job and the people she would be working with are people she's academically admired for years. Let her read these responses.........and then make up her own mind, you've done what you can. Just one thing, has she ever been to the UAE, for longer than an interview or a holiday?

I'd second a poster who suggested North Carolina or Southern VA........beautiful countryside, lots of history, good schools, lots of local speciality shops, especially in university towns, like Raleigh or Greensboro........not as cold as New England and still bearable in summer (especially after Dubai) We had to have long long debates about our forever home, DH really really wanted VA - I was nearly won over by NC but Cyprus finally won out quite simply because we could move there sooner ie before retirement and DH could commute.

How old is the child...........and I know I shouldn't ask, but what nationality (and before anyone starts, it makes a difference.) She's about 8 and English! Unfortunately it's an open garden for 13 villas with a shared pool although we do all have our own patio which is where she took the cat from. They have a dog so I shall be asking if they would like me to repeat the practise and see if they like it! Then that is a worry,,,,,,old enough to know what she is doing, and from a culture which is big on domestic pets......very disturbing. If the parents have any wits or decency they will be concerned, if not, then they will eventually reap what they have sown.

You know, there's something absolutely splendid and lovely, about how many Aussie ladies on here so often express their love for their country. (It's understandable of course, it is a wonderful place, but even so, just nice to read so many people who don't feel they have to talk down their home country) edited by Livelytrish on 31/01/2011

LOL oooops I guess :) ....by "non-native" I mean not the accent you are usually used to. I stand corrected on that one. Citywoman I think they are taught american accents because that is more understandable (as against believable) to the guy calling the call center from the US. edited by zedzee on 31/01/2011 Actually there has been a great deal of research done on accents and how they are perceived by the listener.....marketing companies advising companies which operate in fields where "trustworthiness" is a major issue, banks and financial services etc rate accents for their effect on the customer. I recall once reading that the East Coast Scottish accent was regarded as most "trustworthy" and the least was....... the.Liverpool accent, followed by Birmingham. (Apologies to any ladies from there, just repeating the findings) Many people do have preconceptions about accents, and to imagine otherwise is pointless.

Don't lose hope, my beloved Siamese disappeared for three weeks, no idea what happened, we'd assumed that he'd either been stolen, or was dead........he had never been out of earshot till the day he vanished. When he was found three weeks later, he had obviously been living rough, v emaciated, but alive. He's sitting on my lap now. right next to Scraps........who a few days after Ruffie's disapearance, went to sleep in a neighbours open top car..... and jumped out in panic miles away. Four months later, thanks to a miracle and the power of EW.........we got him back safe and sound. Given that Ruffie's idea of hardship is cheap tuna from the can, as opposed to the real thing, and poor Scraps has only one braincell, and frequently forgets where he left it..........and is terrified of his own shadow, how either of them survived for five minutes, I will never know.........but miracles do happen. Keeping everything crossed for you and Millie and sending a huge cyberhug, I know what you are going thru.

We have just had a great day at the Sharjah Wanderers Rugby Club (apart from the Shamal - instant microdermabrasion to the face). What totally shocked DH and I was the fact that this club is licensed - and had gaming machines :\: We were so surprised to say the least. How does this work if you cannot have a liquor license to consume in Sharjah? And how do you transport it to the premises? I don't really expect anyone to actually be able to answer my questions, but still blown away (no pun intended)! It's just one of the little miracles of life that occur when you least expect them, don't question, just be thankful and enjoy.

I'm not being facetious, but have you actually shown her (as in a demo) what exactly you want done? I've had to do that with maids, they didn't understand the words, but understood the demo., Oh yes, done that so many many times...........but some just prefer to do it their own way.........and if pulled up, tears are the easiest option. Meh.

you know what bugs me about the maids here? When you tell them something they did wrong, even if you tell them in a constructive way, they cry. And we are not mean people! It's happened twice to us! If anything we are too flippin nice aka the pushovers. I asked my friend who has a live-in maid (we have one who comes twice a week for a couple hours) and she said her maid cries all the time too when she brings something to her attention that she did wrong, even something small like mopping the floor wrong. 'I'm sorry madam' sobsobsob If I cried everytime a boss gave me a criticism I'd never have a job...is this a defence mechanism or are they just kind of pathetic?!? I wonder how you would cope if you got the same kind of criticism from your boss that you lived with, more or less been giving up your own family for, completely depend on and most likely don't get paid a lot of money from. *LIKE* (how can you mop a floor "wrong" ???) You obviously don't have a maid.

And does anyone remember Class Reunion by Rona Jaffe? I pilfered it from my mother's bookshelf and it left me completely haunted. Oh, I loved her books. I think I read them after I was 18, though, so didn't make such an impact. "The Group", by Mary McCarthy, now that's something - again, I read it when I was an adult. Always subject to the Papal Index, though - any cradle Carthlics remember that, then? The movie version was on MGM the other night.................innocent times then, that anyone could have bren shocked........even in the 60's

Shirley Jackson's The Lottery gave me nightmares for months after I read it in my babysitter's homework book. Oh my god....I thought I was the only one! It still gives me nightmares! hahahah! My DD did this, well into early adulthood, any criticsim, no matter how mild, constructive or warranted, generated floods........it's very effective. It used to drive me crazy when she was younger.........because inevitably it made resolving issues impossible. And it is the same with so many maids, waterworks over the slightest thing, and really, it's nothing to do with fearing for a job, it's just easier to blub, than take any kind of responsibility for their actions.......or even taking instruction on board. Often, I suspect, it's just another form of "Lalala ... I can't hear you........."

Agree with simpleasabc that Don't Look Now is a wonderfully scary little film. Two others I find scary, though not necessarily horror films, maybe more noir-ish, are Night of the Hunter and Cape Fear . Both films (late 1950s, early 60s) star Robert Mitchum -- he can be so so menacing on screen. Agree, all three truly scary, as oppposed to shock horror slashers..........sometimes, less is more.

I can't comment on cancer treatment in Doha, but if this is if any help whatsoever, a family member had a stroke in Doha...was taken to the Hamad Hospital, where he received the most amazing, and most importantly timely, state of the art treatment. We were all hugely impressed. And in all honesty, perhaps not as many up front frills as Dubai hospitals, but a damm sight more competent.

Are you deficient in vitamin D - surprisingly a lot of people, especially those that cover have this and it can cause tiredness. I dont think so, I mean the last test i had didnot show any vitamine D problem, however iron deficiency has always been an issue to me. BTW what do you mean by "those that cover"? I didnot get you! :P So why not just go to the pharmacy and pick up some Iron pills? Seriously not having a go, just try it....and perhaps a good multi B vitamin pill at the same time?

I would feel sorry for someone who didn't put themselves in such a situation...there are a ton of people that I would rather lend my sympathy to for meeting hard times: - the American soldiers who are deep in debt after being targeted for high-interest lending schemes - war veterans who are alcoholics and drug abusers...living on the streets Those are people who are down and have made mistakes... Octomom had children already...was on welfare...single...no support system. Just because you are stressed and stupid doesn't mean you are mentally ill -- that is a medical diagnosis and a serious thing. Not something you throw around as an excuse for your life mistakes! I agree with you Gleeky (shock...horror!!) The woman is totally barking mad......but not in a way that precludes her doing exactly what she wants to further her insatiable desire for fame. What I do not understand is a cultural set of medical ethics which allows an unscrupulous quack to perform the implantions. without prosecution or at least peer condemnation........where is the AMA in all of this? And, almost as culpable are TV personalities like Oprah who give sad sacks like this woman the oxygen of publicity........it will only serve to encourage another borderline personality lackwit to try to emulate this walking cluster. And all for ratings.....

it must be a day for nutters - an Etihad flight has just been diverted and escorted into Stansted by 2 fighter planes because of a "disturbance on board. What next? We'll most likely hear tomorrow that a drunk has been charged with making threats..........I am making assumptions here, but soemtimes I seriously wonder about the judgement of air crew. I know there is no room for error in air safety, but the blithering drunk who claims to have a bomb, is not your usual suspect.

Maybe trying approaching the owner first. Even borderline threatening to complain. But please don't complain to DM. All they will do is get rid of the dog or put it to sleep. It's not the fault of the animal. It's the fault of the human here. Clearly, the poor dog needs some training and socialisation. And the owner needs to be trained even more so, and not let her dog roam off-leash. I'd suggest taking whatever steps are necessary, except for reporting it to the authorities. Again, it's not the fault of the poor dog. It's the owner to blame. Why should that dog loose its life because of a careless owner? Not quite true, I know of several cases where DM visited the dogs' owners and gave a warning, Sometimes people need to be reminded of their responsibilities, by someone with a little more clout than a concerned neighbour. And most certainly speak to Emaar security.

This is my favourite drink! I make it by doing ice, vodka, tomato juice, salt and pepper, or celery salt is even better than normal salt, tabasco, and a wedge of lemon or lime, stick of celery if you have it. mix it up and add to taste. In fact I am gonna make one now as just polished off the last of the vino! Must try the one at the Els! Just noticed....you didn't mention the other vital ingredient, and it is a must.......Worcester Sauce (Lea and Perrins).......... it's not a ****** without that.
