Afraid to ask but...do I need to get those anti-venom, really?? if so, where do I get that? (hoping it was a joke...) Apparently so according to an earlier thread. I can't wait, have added a tube of anti venom for red back spider bites and sorpions stings to my shoppping list for Boots tomorrow and a giant mousetrap from B&Q, then I'll be sorted.

Try shortening her afternoon nap a little - do not eliminate it as she is little and will still need that nap for some time. She should nap no less than 1 1/2hr and no more than 3 in the afternoon. She should sleep around 10-11 hours at night. What is her last meal of the day besides nursing? Do you nurse before or after the meal? Does she nap in the morning? Does she have a bedtime routine? Does she have new teeth coming? Is she already walking?

Funny but our goal is to save the extra money we would make, not spend it.... Anyone else with this goal here?

Try cinnamon mixed with chili powder instead of coffee on thresholds, window sills and everywhere they might be coming in from. Mop/wipe entire house and spray everywhere they might have walked over with equal parts of water and vinegar. That will remove the scent the "scout" ant leaves behind for the others to come in. Just make sure babies dont touch chili powder and put in their mouth/eyes....

If you have kids like me and want to try something before doing the chemical option, here's a homemade remedy: Clean entire home with equal parts of water and vinegar first, including all places they might have walked on. Use a sprayer and spray everywhere where the mop wont reach. That confuses the other ants from finding the marks left by the scouts ( the ones that come in first looking for food). Then sprinkle a mix of cinnamon and chili powder and place it on thresholds, doors, windowsills or anywhere else they could be coming in from - don't forget vents and drains especially dryer vents and dishwashers. Reapply often until they give up, but they might start roaming outside looking for ways to come in - and that's when you will find it easier to trace them back to their farm! Go outside and look for ant mounds and cracks on bricks, walls, etc... and pour boiling water on it. Ta-da! Hope this helps....

No you can't substitute, but depending on what you're making, if it asks for cornmeal as a thickening agent you could substitute with arrowroot flour or wheat flour...but if it's the corn TASTE that counts then you need the cornmeal or polenta flakes. Polenta is actually made with cornmeal. It comes in flakier chunks of cornmeal as opposed to a thin, flour-like powder. But the taste is almost, if not exactly the same. If you need recipes with cornmeal or polenta just ask..... ;)

I swear by technology and videos as a plan B to crayons, stickers, paper dolls, coloring books...but we end up carrying so much stuff!!!!So my best time-gaining tips are: 1- bring some new, small, dollar store type toys individually wrapped, something she's never seen before and think of a game and the toy would be a prize.... give it to her one at a time during the flight, let her open it, make it difficult to open (lots of tape etc);) (oh my gosh I'm so mean..LOL) 2- Get a Nintendo DS and games like Puzzle, Sudoku for Kids, Etch A Sketch . Ask the store for more toddler options, there are many games and touching the screen with the little pen will keep her entertained for hoooours. You can turn the volume off or let her use headphones. Also download some movies and she can watch it on DS - unless you bring the IPAD with movies, which is even better. 3- washable, window coloring crayola markers. She can draw on the plane window! Make sure to bring some wet ones to wipe it off - you will get some looks, but all in the name of motherhood and it will pay off when you wipe it all off like magic ;) - if you can't find it, bring some chalk, ask for water, wet the chalk and let her draw on the window. Then she has to let it dry and the chalk will appear on the window like magic. (oh, yea, and get a window seat first ;)) 4- Ipod - make a playlist just for her with kids songs or lullabies *wink wink* 5- finger puppets. Get crafty and make a paper foldable stage with windows that open up, like a real puppet show stage. If you can handle making it on the flight , keep her busy by trying to help you do that. 6- get a book on simple or kids Origami, bring some small papers and ask for her to help you make it. (get the proper paper as they are small and so colorful! Some come with the books) No matter what, NO NAPS during the time before the flight - keep her tired and hopefully she will crash during takeoff :) and no matter what DO NOT wake her up for meals!!!!!!

I am also interested in this topic. I would prefer someone to come and clean/do the laundry but only part time, 3 times a week...is this possible at all?? It is so frustrating that we must be responsible for what a maid does in her free time!!!!!!! How can we possibly control that? :-/ Can we make them sign something, waiving us in case they do get to work for someone else? Is there no protection to us??? Could someone recommend a good, reliable agency??? Thanks in advance.

I've decided to clean up the msg I found online...took me a while...hope it makes sense..... ( if you wish to look for the full content, just copy and paste a section of the text on google, it might bring the whole thing up...) Some "dude" decided to reply to those scam emails...it is hilarious..... Even for people as gullible as me, the trials of harsh experience can produce a thimbleful of wisdom. As I’ve recounted in these pages, people from all over the world (okay, mainly from Africa) have written me with offers of pre-funded ATM cards, wire-transfers of vast sums of money, bags of gold dust, boxes of cash, and more. Those messages have come from British bureaucrats, orphans on the run from murderous uncles, ovarian cancer survivors, bank officers, you name it. Sometimes, they’ve discovered I’m the sole survivor of dead relatives I never knew I had. I took them at their word. I promptly wrote back to every one of these people, trying to do my part to make possible the delivery of wealth into my hands, so that I might fulfill grand projects that would turn NCS from a half-a** metal blog into a global empire of awesomeness. And every one of the slimy ***** has failed to deliver. And yes, I’ve learned something from these hope-crushing experiences: Don’t trust anyone offering you money if they don’t know what Fleshgod Apocalypse is. But, I confess, hope springs eternal. And an e-mail I received just this week from a dude in Ghana has revived my hopes. It’s just so eloquently written that I know something good will come of it. Plus, I think this is the biggest offer of cash I’ve yet received. After the jump, the message I got and my heart-felt reply to it. From Mr.Pascal Akossa Cal Merchant Bank Ring road Accra Ghana. Attn, I am enchanted using this tremendous opportunity to converse with you in this medium of communication. I am Mr.Pascal Akossa Finance director Cal Merchant Bank Ghana. I am contacting you for a possible business transfer worth $10,500,000.00 I am using this moment to give you the cognizance and also to seek your assistance to this business proposal. I got your contact over the internet. In my department I discovered an abandoned sum of $10,500,000.00 in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customers Mr. Alan Williams, A British National who died along with his entire family in (20th Oct, 2005) in a plane crash. As followed in this link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/tanzania/1501084/Tycoon-dies-with-family-in-Tanzania-safari-plane-crash.html Do not view this as being illegal but an opportunity for us to enrich our hope in life instead of the bank converting this much money to the security funds. You should not nurse any atom of fear as all required arrangements have been made for the smooth transfer of these funds into your account, and your acceptance is what will crown this effort. It will be my interest to finish this transaction with you hoping that you will not cheat or blackmail me at the conclusion of this goal because I have planned it for long. If you can be a collaborator to this transaction, please indicate your positive interest immediately for us to proceed. Remember this is absolutely confidential because my Bank does not know about it. To establish this you have to send the following information to me: FULL NAMES:________________________ ADDRESS: _________________________ STATE:_____________________ COUNTRY________________________________ AGE:_________________ OCCUPATION:________________________ MOBILE PHONE:_____________________________ TEL FAX NUMBER:_____________________ Thank you for your time and attention. So, now you got what you need from me, go ahead and “give me the cognizance.” To be brutally honest here, Pascal, I don’t know what the **** that means, but it better mean sending the $10.5 mill over to me with no *******’ around, or a little bird might whisper something about this in the ear of your bank superiors. You feel me? One last thing: I know you don’t expect to get anything out of this except the enchanting knowledge that all this money will be put to work for the betterment of metalheads everywhere (or at least metalheads with the good taste to read NCS). But I think you deserve a little something for your efforts, and with the $10.5 million, I can afford to be generous. So I was thinking about $500 for you would be fair. Sound good? Awesome. Great link! I could fetch a few linkbacks by googling "how much water an 8th month old baby should have" but let's keep in mind the issue is her constipation...not how much water she should have.....

Sorry but she mentioned 170ml of [i'>juice[/i'> at every meal - not [i'>water[/i'>. There is a difference there, especially if the juice is processed and sweetened, like apple or grape juice that you can buy ready to drink.... honestly I don't think (for kids AND adults) we can say one had "too much water", especially in hot climates like Dubai - and simply because if your baby is not thirsty, she won't drink it ;)) As long as the intake of water is not done right before meals (that would fill them up and they wouldn't want to eat as much as they should), I don't see why she should not drink more water......especially if she's constipated (and maybe the constipation has something to do with something already in her diet - so maybe there's no need for more fiber...) The content of water in food should only count as 20% of your daily intake of water. To put it in numbers, my pedia recommended 4-6 oz of plain water (not juice!) per day as an average, and 6-8 if the baby is constipated , if it's summer or if in hot climates, for up to 12 months of age. Also a good tip is to watch your baby's urine color, if its pale yellow, then she is probably getting enough to drink, if it gets darker, offer more. The water content in formula also cannot be considered in the calculation of the amount of "water" you are giving to your baby. Now, I obviously do agree with breastmilk, no discussion of the 'goodness" on it.... But I was monitored very closely by my pediatricians ( I had two in different countries - one of them VERY hot) and both did not put any restrictions to water intake (after and in between meals - not right before - a few sips [i'>during[/i'> is ok) provided my twins had the right amount of food and formula they needed for their age at the time. Hope this helps!

PS If she's 8 months now and was 6 months and/or displaying all the signs of readiness when you first introduced solids, then allergies are unlikely as you say unless there is a family history. oh..she has a big bottle of diluted juice at every meal.. and she finishes the whole bottle ( 170ml) ok...will send you and email... thanks BFC!!! Agree that she might be constipated. She definitely needs more water. Try adding also more fiber to her diet, like offering oatmeal with bits of pitted prunes in it. But adding more fiber will do nothing unless she drinks more water to her diet.(and that doesn't mean juice or formula). Jello , Watermelon, Papaya, Canteloupe, Pears and other fruits rich in water help too. Good luck.

He will do it when he's ready. My boy told me flat out at age 2 "mommy I don't need diapers anymore". He never even wet his bed since! My daughter on the other hand had to use pull-ups til age 3, but nightime only. Each child is different....diapers are a pain ( not to mention the cost!) but we have to follow their time. I never used a potty - got them a toilet seat cover from the beggining. Get him also a stepping stool so he can reach it better (for #1) or climb easier on it (for #2). A trick I've learned: put a "Cheerios" in the toilet, and make it a little fun "game" for him to "aim" on the Cheerios. Loads of fun and he will enjoy it everytime!!!!! Not to mention he will be a pro at making sure he does it IN the toiled (and not around it!). Good luck!

I thought of sharing my input on this as I did it for two - as far as I remember this is what my pedia recommended ( I might have missed something!) : They started on rice cereal at 5 months then moved up to pureed fruits and veggies - 1 new vegetable per week or so - then moved up to chunkier foods and meats. By year 1 my twins were eating basically everything an adult eats (with some exceptions like greasy foods and depending on how many teeth ( awww so cute!!!) your baby has. Grilled chicken/grilled beef bits Pureed green veggies noodles cooked soft (bite size rings) mixed with the purees or plain, with butter or olive oil Chunky homemade purees or steamed and cut in bite size pieces: carrots, peas, potatoes, beets, squash, turnip....(with a drizzle of olive oil for taste - yum!) Fresh fruit juices Fresh fruit cut in bite size pieces especially apple, pear, mango, papaya, canteloupe, watermelon, grapes only seedless or pitted and ALWAYS cut in half (very important detail) Oatmeal Yogurt Hard boiled egg once a week - cut in small pieces or mashed in the food ( I think it started 1/4 egg per week at 9 months, 1/2 egg once a week at 12, then increase using this ratio at 15 and 18 months.) Cereals like Cheerios..Arrowroot cookies....Melba toast...they loooove crunchy foods. (Babies that age need to eat crunchy foods to stimulate digestion and their teeth. But beware of sizes as some foods can be dangerous as they could choke) Nurse after meals then offer one bottle in the morning, one after lunch and one before bedtime (Two naps a day and try to wean the second nap around age 2. ( I strongly think that by adding the food to their diet slowly makes them lose interest in breast milk) - as for my pedia he said to me " once your child develops teeth, he does not need nutrients from "you" he needs it from food" (added this) it will become easier to wean them off the breast when they have a more complete, filling diet. They will naturally not show much interest anymore. They never had an illness, not even a cold until they started daycare at age 2...not sure if it's related or not to their diet but I like to think it is :) Hope it helps!!!!!! edited by MomOfTwins on 01/06/2011 <em>edited by MomOfTwins on 01/06/2011</em>

If you are my true friend and if I buy you a gift for whatever occasion, I absolutely do not expect a gift in return! It is different though if you are an acquaintance, a friend from work, or someone you're not too close to - then the gift should be returned if possible - if not possible, which looks like it's your case, thats OK too!!! But a note, email, even a hand written card would do to explain why and apologize.

It's illegal to use anyone who isn't sponsored by you (i/e your own housemaid) or isn't via an agency. That said many do. Finding a teenager in July may be hard, but I'm sure the Ranches ladies will be able to advise. The weather will be vile in July and even worse in Aug, especially for people new to Dubai (it will take a while for your blood to thin and for you to say you are a bit chilly in 40 degree heat!). I'd be amazed if your kids will not want to outside at any point (well mine wouldn't anyway), after the novelty of a pool has worn off of course. Wll keep that in mind, thanks for the tips!

Do you mean like ... a teenager to help you out? Or someone [ie a helper'> from an agency? You're probably aware that you can't use anyone else's full-time helper [it's illegal'> so your best bet is hiring through an agency or hoping that there is a teenager out there looking for p/t work [who isn't on holidays'>. Loads of families go away at this time of year though, so good luck with your search. PS. The weather is filthy out here in July so the pool/park option will be limited to brief trips, I suspect! :D Thanks for the reply..yeah I've considered that it would be extremely hot so i'll try to schedule whatever I have to do for the afternoons, then hubby would be back home and take everyone for ice cream and pool after ( provided the heat is ok)....but there will be things to do at home, videogames etc. I wasn't thinking of hiring someone's helper, but I didn't know if there were on-call, casual babysitting services in agencies or not? I have only been in Dubai for 10 days a month ago, so that's my reference weatherwise. I would consider a teenager, provided he/she is responsible with kids, and doesn't smoke (my son is allergic to that and to a few other things, and so am I). But, is it allowed??

Let's flash mob it and show'em how to do it ! :D Now, lemme jump on this tks train by saying I too agree what she said is so true ...as a newbie myself I have been helped 100% of the times I have asked - and I'm not even in Dubai yet! Everyone has been so corteous and kind to me and my questions, which have been asked probably a gazillion times. So all you veteran ladies, pat yourselves in the back - you rock :) I am glad to be part of such a kind and compassionate group. Thanks a bunch.

Over the years we have had them with desks underneath for all our children. On the whole they have been very popular. I don't personally like the rungs on the ladder as although they have a non-slip edge, they are very narrow and kids in a hurry could slip through them. My teenage son recently took possession of the older style wooden 140 cm bed a few months back and the rungs on the ladder are flat, more comfortable to climb and safer. The biggest challenge is putting on the bottom sheet but of course as they get older you can get the kids to do it themselves. Certainly not safe for a child under the age of 6/7. I have one of these beds, practically brand new, but with no mattress, looking for a home if you want it. Thanks for your comments! I noticed that too at the store and I thought the same thing. My kids are 7 now so I think it is fairly safe to give it a try but I am still skeptical about getting them up in the morning - I'd probably have to climb up there to drag them out on the first few nights!!!!! Prob about getting yours is my husband is buying it installed since he wont be able to do it himself and I am still back home (chewing my nails to the stubs...). But I appreciate the offer, thanks !

Just to clarify as I didn't explain well on my earlier post (sorry! ) If you have a Dymo Letratag printer (I paid for mine 35-40 dollars back home) you can add those little designs to your name tag (horse, bow, heart..there's many) as well as use many different fonts - and print them as needed - and iron on ! Here's the iron-on label roll you can get online http://www.labelcity.com/dymo-letratag/dymo_letratag_iron-on_fabric_label_tapes.shtml Here's an older post on where to find the Dymo label maker in Dubai http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=74172
