Get todays National. They have an expert spell out what a landlord has to do to give notice, and what is and isn't legally allowed. You will feel much better when you read this and can then show it to your landlord. Even if he really does want you out to live in it himself/family member, he HAS to give you 12 months notice in a notarised letter delivered to you.

At the moment it is true. Apparently KHDA has refused an increase to the fees so the Board has decided to close the school from the end of this academic year - June 2014. I guess one of the options is for parents to pressure the KHDA to allow an increase to fees to keep the school open - although that might just be the excuse rather than the reason for closure.

Waitrose have delicious fresh turkeys but you have to order them early December. Unfortunately they don't do big fresh turkeys, and with 12 people for dinner, I need the biggest available (usually about 11 kgs)

Get your friend to call their UK agent. Simpsons Removals Based in Kent Tel: 01322 386969 If she has a container number or any official documentation, they can probably track the effects. If she has nothing, then it is going to be difficult. There is an outside chance that ReloGulf did the decent thing and at least shipped her stuff - although they wont have paid anything ! Good luck.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your friend may never see her effects again! I know a family who have just come here from the UK, who also used Relogulf to ship their effects plus their boat. Paid everything upfront. When they arrived here - no effects/no boat. They did, however, receive an email from the company in the UK who collected their effects, to ask that the family confirm the instruction received that their effects be trashed !!! The outcome has been that the family has had to pay again to have everything shipped. The husband went to file a complaint with the Economic Dept, and was told that there were already claims of over 6 million dirhams against the company, and that the economic Dept didn't know where the owner was! Your friend needs to get someone down to the Economic Dept to file a claim, and to ask them if they know where ReloGulf had their storage warehouse, as her effects may still be in it! Other than that, she should contact the UK agent for ReloGulf and ask whether by any chance, her effects were shipped anyway. If they were she has to be prepared to pay all costs again. Did she get any Bill of lading from Relogulf? Or a receipt with UK addresses on it ?

Friends used to take their dog to Jebel Ali, but last time they were there their car, and the dog, were photographed by a municipality inspector. They were told if they were seen there again they would be fined AED 10,000 !! They were told no beaches in Dubai allow dogs - even those out of the way ones that are empty most of the time.

Let me know the best time to post my email address as I don't really want it on line all day. Many thanks. Laura - if you have it already, can you email it to me??

I lived in JAV for a number of years, and loved it. BUT..... We had one of the better villas, i.e., didn't leak when it rained, didn't have rats, , but the sewerage system was forever getting blocked, and there always seemed to be some small bit of maintenance required every weekend ! We did our own maintenance if it was small, as that way we knew it had been properly repaired (and didn't have to wait for the maintenance company to get round to us). Even allowing for refurbishment, I don't think the villas are worth k130, especially if you are responsible for your own maintenance! One of the reasons that the redevelopment didn't go ahead (apart from the obvious lack of funds) was the presence of asbestos in the ceilings. It wasn't safe to break them down and allow asbestos to get into the air as the school was still open in the middle of the village. If anything happens to the villa roof, tenants will now be responsible - ouch, expensive!! The sewerage system will not have improved after 5 years of non use ! The Recreation Club is still open though, so new tenants should have access to the pool , tennis courts, squash courts, restaurants etc. I think the village will come back again, if only because people live and work in that area and other communities are still expensive. But, unlike Arnie, I won't be back !!

I have the 12 sisters of Laura2's babies, plus mama tortoise, and they all live in the garden. Between 9 a.m. and about 5;30 p.m., you would never guess that a single creature lived in the garden as they are all safely in their beds (burrows). Even the tiny ones have their burrows, under the plants, to stay cool. Mama spends most nights asleep by a sprinkler head , getting soaked 4 times over. The babies come out for a few hours and then disappear again for the night, coming back out at about 6 a.m. for breakfast. There are a number of shallow bowls (plant pot saucers in different sizes are good) around the garden as well. As long as your torti has access to shade and water, she should be fine during the summer.

I wear gas permeable hard lenses. I usually get solutions from either the pharmacy or next door at the opticians in the Spinneys centre on Al Wasl Road. However, I go on holiday in a couple of weeks, so if you get desperate I have a spare bottle of wetting /soaking solution, and probably a cleaner you can have.

Just seen this. It's easy to get to. From Mirdiff, head towards Mushrif Park on the Khawaneej Rd. Drive past the park, and you get to a big roundabout. At the roundabout go left.(road 222) Once on that road, take the first road right and the walking track is just ahead on the left. At the moment it has a weighing station there for people wanting to enter the 'lose and win gold' fitness promotion.

was 39 degrees at 8 am. I still ran 10 km outside at 7 pm last night; there was some "cold" breezes so it was really pleasant. I'm impressed :) I picked up my boys from the metro at 9pm last night, and it was still 45 degrees !! My dog didn't get her late night walk as I thought it was still too hot for me, let alone a hairy monster, so impressed you went out running !

I have always got my deposit back. In fact, at the moment I have the nicest landlord in the whole of Dubai, who not only sorts out any problem within a day or two of my reporting it, but has also already given back my deposit because he doesn't like being responsible for it ! So I am renting a house with no deposit held by the owner :) Your deposit is just that - a deposit! Landlords or agents can deduct from it - like the cost of repainting even when they don't - but you should always get something back.

It used to be that if you were working for a company, with a contract, then you had to ask for their written permission to work elsewhere. Your Labour Card is for the Company who got the card for you. No doubt someone else will know more, but I don't think you can use your current labour card for your own venture.

Unfortunately I don't live close enough, but are you sure you want someone walking her at 11:00 a.m.? I have a Lab and walk her between 5.30 - 6 in the morning, and after 9 at night. it was about 42 degrees today at midday. A friend lost her young dog after a well meaning relative walked her at 5 p.m. Pup overheated and nothing could be done. It was tragic. So if she is being walked then, please make sure she is back in 15 minutes , into a cool room with plenty of water.

Agree with Noddy2 completely. My 4 loved/love it here, for all the reasons Noddy2 kids did. My kids earned their spending money by doing housework and gardening as I never had a maid while they were growing up! Bonus - when the first 2 went off to University I already knew that they could cook, clean and look after themselves :) My 3rd one is about to fly the nest, and the 4th is here for another 2 years. They both use the metro and buses to get around, with the occasional taxi from Metro to home late at night. Generally life here is good for teens, BUT you have to do your part in warning them about the dangers of growing up - just as you would anywhere else. Despite this being a Muslim country, alcohol is readily available, as are certain other substances. There is nowhere near the amount of peer pressure on kids here to do stupid things as there is in the UK, but letting your kids know what will happen to the whole family if they run foul of the law is worth doing. Other than that, my kids had, and are having, a ball, and all 4 consider this place their home :)

And once again the tenant suffers! There has to be a rule put in place to protect the tenants in all this! Why can't the Developer go to the rent committee when an owner does not pay his service/maintenance charges, and have a lien placed on the rent? The tenant can then pay his rent to the committee; they can pay the charges that are outstanding, and any money left can go to the Owner. While the fees are outstanding, the owner cannot change tenants and cannot increase the rent. Also, the Developer has to prove the charges are genuine before the lien is agreed. Bet they'd all pay PDQ if that was going to happen!

I know 2 lots of parents who have already accepted places at other schools for their children, starting from September, as neither set of parents can do a pick up at 2 pm from 2014. Moving their children after January 2014 is not an option due to KHDA rules, so they are doing it for the new term. It does seem to be a bit short sighted of the school. Wonder if it will affect the KHDA rating?

Callam - if he was intending to rob you, you actually told him your DH wasn't there !!!! Please be careful with information you give callers at the door. Government officials carry their ID, and genuine callers have never been upset when I have asked them to wait while I check with their office etc. And when my DH is away, I never tell them that. I usually say he is bathing or sleeping and either answer their questions through the gate, or ask them to return later. edited by mrsg on 21/04/2013

There is only one month of school left in this term. Just keep them home and enrol for next term. But the school has a policy of them paying for the biggest term fees regardless of when in the school year they start! that is terrible and surely cannot be legal !!

Are you surethere is no alternative to this school? Because this is not a good start to your relationship with your childrens educator. I would feel seriously ripped off if I was asked to pay for a term that I was not even in Dubai. Approach KHDA and ask for their advice on this. Other than that, there is not a lot you can do that will not affect your place offer from this rip off school! If you approach the press then the school may withdraw its offers of places for your children because of it.

I will try later with some food. His ribs are sticking out!! I seem to remember there being an animal rescue lady near Mirdiff. Does anyone have any contact details?? Thanks. ps - he has more of an alsation face with upright ears now that I can see him without cars whizzing past !

Mods - I have posted this in pets, but can you leave it here for a short while as well please? On my drive in this morning I saw a male dog running up and down the central reservation almost in front of the Municipality Vets on Khawaneej Road. I stopped and ran across, but he wouldn't come near me and I didn't want to get him so frightened that he ran into the road! So, if anyone in Mirdiff/Mizar area has lost a large yellow male, looks like he has Golden Retriever in him, it might be him. Sorry, I couldn't do anything else to help him.

It sounds like you have a pregnant rabbit. Mine used to hate being picked up when they were pregnant. Rabbits are very sensitive though, and if she is pregnant, and feels threatened, she will abort her young. They can also absorb some back into their system and have them later if times/food are hard! Amazing things really. Doesn't help you though. If she is pregnant she will be looking for somewhere safe to have her babies. Put a big box with straw in the garden and see if she likes it. Of course, she could just be growing up and wanting to burrow because that's what they do :) Mine lived permanently in the garden - burrows all over the place. Now we have tortoises - MUCH bigger burrows I can tell you ! You can neuter rabbits, but most vets won't guarantee the outcome as they don't always come out of the anaesthetic! I took mine to Al Safa vets. Try them for advice initially.

I used one of these services late last year for my DH. He had been at a trade show and I thought being picked up in a buggy and transported round the airport, instead of having to walk it, would make his day. Unfortunately, he was collected just outside the plane - no problem - but was then walked the entire length of the concourse, with the meet and greet person at his side. He then joined the massive queue to go through immigration - just like everyone else! There was absolutely no benefit from employing the meet and greet team. He could (and obviously did!) get himself to immigration and baggage under his own steam - but he was supposed to be whisked through the airport and immigration , that's what I was paying for. My emails to the booking centre went completely unanswered. So if I were you, and happy with Marhaba, I'd stick with them !!
