FairyDust replied... Many banks offer savings accounts for non-residents, but they usually require a certain minimum balance to be kept. May sound like a funny question, but do savings accounts offer the ability to pay local bills online like DEWA, phones, Salik, etc. If it does, this would work.

I stopped by DIB the other day and it was a "no go" according to gal I talked to. Curious as to how foreign investors handle their properties here.

I can't comment on offices, but I find the malls here to be pleasant and comfortable. Please don't mess with the air con in public places. As a hijab wearing Muslim, I'd be stuck at home if the malls and/or groceries were influenced by those few who get cold. I can't stand the heat anymore -- just fed up with it.

So what happens to your phone number if your visa runs out and you have to do visa runs? An article in the paper today said that if you do not renew the number, the number and phone service will be suspended and you have up to three (3) months (I think) to turn in the appropriate paperwork. If you fail to do that, then the number will be lost and go back into circulation.

Norak I had the same message recently and it came when my visa/ID had expired. They wanted my new visa and ID card details. I understood what and why when I got the sms, but we were never told at the time the registering of the telephone numbers a few years ago that there was going to be a regular renewals -- just like your visas, ID cards, etc. Now, obviously, it's going to be another thing you "must" do on top of everything else. The sad part is that I have had this number for over 20 years, and I will probably lose it.

FYI, there was a time when there was plenty of comfortable seating around the Mall of the Emirates for resting. It was taken out strategically to force people into the cafes and restaurants. They will not be coming back any time soon. Yes I remember those benches. Long time ago now and I also think they won't be coming back. Now whenever We go to moe with someone with knees trouble we take a foldable stool/chair with us. Not everyone can walk all the way to prayer room to get a bit of rest. However they still have plenty of benches for smoking outside the mall. That's a strange way of discouraging smoking. There way not only benches, there used to be cushy chairs upstairs in which I used to sit and drink a coffee and read the paper.

Lucky you. I've had this number for 20 years and, at the moment, don't have a emirates ID, so I am sunk. Needless to say, this number is used for everything. I can say that in all the year I have had this number, I don't believe I have ever been late in settling my bill in full each month. It says I have until the end of July or I could lost it. So frustrating.

Try Theibo---know that |I have really messed the name up -- but also some stores known as Brands for Less Theibo is in a number of malls, Ibn Battuta, Oasis Center, Outlet Mall, and I am sure some others. Brands for Less are located in Satwa, Dierra, and a newish one close to the Mall of the Emirates. Selection and sizes can be hit or miss, but I have bought many cold weather clothes from there over the years and for good prices.

There is a strong possibility that we might be moving to Germany (Dusseldorf) in the near future. My question relates to my daughter who is a Psychology graduate from Middlesex University here in Dubai. She is considering joining us in Germany and pursuing her master's degree. I'm sure the majority of schools there are German taught/speaking, and I fear she will not be able to learn German well enough to pursue her studies. Are there any English speaking Universities in Dusseldorf ? She may not want to pursue psychology further but change course, I was wondering if there are any consultants here in Dubai where we can get information on course options, admission requirements (accepting the Middlesex Degree etc) and papers to pursue etc. Any response would be helpful as I am completely lost -- and thanks.

FYI, we ended up at TCF at Mall of the Emirates. We were told to arrive around 6 to 6:15. Our name was taken and given a beeper. They called us to begin seating by around 6:20. Orders were taken to prepare for the breakfast. Someone came around to inform us that fasting was over, Food came out shortly thereafter. I was pleasantly surprised at how well organized they were. This is the first time I have ever eaten out during Ramadan (husband traveling) -- no kidding! By the time we had started eating, the placed was pretty full. Anyway, thanks for the responses.

I went on the second or third day of Ramadan. Two trips ago, I had the gal at the Dubai boarder put a little pink post it with the day my visit visa was up -- which was the normal 30 plus 9 days I think (sorry did not count and always generally go a few days before the 9 or 10th day to be safe!). I asked the following month for a sticker the following month but they said they didn't have any. Did not receive on this most recent trip either. Hope this helps.

I have not been there a very long time, but Abu Hail Center is a small mall which has other types of shops but an abundant amount of abaya shops. I am sure you will find some children's sizes as well as kandora's as well. Down the road towards and past the Al Mula Plaza, there are a number of other small plazas that sell abayas and the like. Same road, same side of street as Abu Hail Center. Good luck.

POA's can be done over at the Dubai Police section location in Barsha -- right next to the Barsha car testing and registration center. There is a "Courts" office there and typing centers which will allow you to get them typed and then certified etc. Make sure you bring your passports. I have found, in general, that the general POA's that were prepared there to be relatively useless. Even though it covered every normal transaction as it pertained to banks --- all encompassing language, our bank decided it did not accept it and wanted it to specifically say the specific instrument I was trying to cash -- and would not accept it. These were prepared there, notorized, and certified by the Courts, etc., but didn't matter. Therefore, my suggestion is that if you have a specific need, that you have that language prepared in advance because those typists have boilerplate language, and you will have to be able to present them with exactly what you need to have it done quickly. Other choice, is to go to an attorney or a "better" typist or translator to have it done and then taken to the courts for certification. Hope this helps. I might add that, if possible, contact the place where you need to have signatures done in your absence and ask them for suggestions. Perhaps they have a form already that can be signed and notorized etc .

Sorry Couch Potato, didn't intend to take a nap but this heat today zapped my energy. Why is it so hot for early June? Anyway, yes, his visa will only have been expired less than a month by the time he is scheduled to return. Have advised him there may be that chance he will be pulled aside and to be prepared for it -- but he has now booked his ticket today and going. As a side note, I have not been to the Immigration Dept for a number of years, and I can report that today's visit was pretty smooth in that they have now created a ladies section for each department and was able to get in and out very quickly. Big progress as I used to spend a great deal of time there processing paperwork when I had my businesses. Thanks everyone for the input.

For those ladies who might be interested, I went down to the Immigration Dept this am and spoke with two different people. Each told me the same thing. (thankfully). Both said it was best to cancel before he leaves. However, if his visa expires while he is out, he will be able to come in through his passport on a visit visa. Son is so relieved and looking forward to joining his school friends for a tour around Europe no matter what happens. .

Two thoughts. One, I gifted my daughter a beautiful blank recipe book that I found at Paper Chase (I think) for her to write down her favorites etc. Second, maybe a gift certificate for the bookshop at the Dubai Mall. There are so many cookbooks there that I would love to own myself. Hope this helps.

My computer does this periodically as well. I must say that it is not as frequent as before (fingers crossed!). We have three computers in our home and, although it occurred with the other two, mine seemed to be the one which would just "disconnect" even though I was still connected. The others would not have the problem while I was having mine. It usually only lasted about 10 minutes or so although sometimes it was longer. I have no explanation for it either. I just know it is very frustrating.

Sometimes people post they have some available here in the forum. Aside from that, there is a shop in AlQoz that sells them--its on the road behind the Barsha car registration center., and I believe I saw a new packing/box shop that opened up on the Barsha slip road near the Creative Land? hobby shop. Ace hardware sells, but don't offer variety of sizes. I think most packing companies sell them if you run across one anywhere. Hope this helps some.

I live in the Springs area. I would like to avoid going to Satwa etc, and was hoping someone knows where I can buy those metal prongs on this side of town. So as to not mislead you from my thread title, I'm looking for the those that have 3 or 4 prongs as opposed to clips. I have not looked for them for years! Thanks. edited by norak on 07/05/2015

You can buy them from most sanitary shops -- even Karama/Satwa, etc. However, please be sure to make sure they are stainless steel as the others will rust very easily and quickly. Trust me, I know. I bought a number of them from a shop in Satwa and was "assured" that they were stainless steel --- they were not! I would buy from a named sanitary ware shop. You'll pay quite a bit more, but it will be worth it.

I remember dating a guy years ago who used to say of people: "You have a face for radio." I didn't care for this gal's voice from the first promo, and I now turn their show off where I used to listen frequently. Voice is very important in radio -- in my opinion.

Just want to add that I did another visa run today and, for some reason, we got stuck in Oman in line for 3 hours!!!! I've done over 15 runs, and the longest I have ever been held up in Oman is probably 15 minutes. Don't know why but no apparent reason other than incredibly slow and passports being handed behind counter keeping those in line waiting. At one point, I was probably 3 people away from front of cue when the guy gets up -- tells the guys in front of me he'll be a minute -- and then proceeded to the drive thru window and started processing visas for those in cars going into Oman!!! There was probably 40 people behind me and I was at the 2 hour point at that time. We were made to wait until the guy who was supposed to cover the window showed up. Very, very frustrating. On a more positive note, when I re-entered Dubai, the gal behind the counter put a small post-it note on my visa page with the day of May 15th --- as a reminder as to when I need to do the next run. Love this addition and hope it continues. Wishing all those who have visa runs in the near future a quicker time than I had!

Haseff, you kind find reasonably priced abayas in Satwa. There are a number of stores that specialize in them, and some of them you will seemingly find over 100's to chose from. Remember to haggle the price. If you have the time or inclination, there is the Abu Hail Center up by Al Mulla Plaza that probably over 15 shops alone. My recommendation is to pick an Abaya this not too fussy and extremely comfortable and easy. Umrah can be very busy and crowded -- dress for comfort. Congratulations on your trip. I pray Allah makes it easy for you.

Be very careful when working with these people who show up at your door offering services. I had one once who took my money for "fertilizer" , "seed", etc. and never showed up again. Fortunately, I was able to track him down and put the fear into him even though I never got my money back. Lesson learned.

I was a part of that mess for years, and do not miss it for one second! The only thing I can say is that there is a real "fear" put into the kids about being late for class -- no excuses no matter what the traffic, an accident, illness, car problems, etc. They (the school) don't care. Hence, you see the kids get out no matter where they are and run to not be late. We all know that no matter how well you plan and leave early etc. -- things don't always go to plan. So glad that is over.

My wonderful, amazing son surprised me with a bouquet of flowers yesterday and a small box of chocolates. It was beautiful, fresh and the rose buds tightly closed. According to him, it looked like what he ordered. I could not have been more surprised or pleased -- and, no, I have no affiliation with this site -- just a lucky mother. The site he ordered from was "flowershop.ae". I am sure there are others out there as well.
