Hi Mrs Colombo, I have only been in Dubai since Feb so the whole experience of moving is very fresh. I have plenty of free time at the moment and would gladly meet you next week if you wanted to? We have rented a villa which shares a pool between 8 villas. Our first DEWA was AED1845 which included AED1000 municipality charge (5% of your rent each month). The water charge was quite high because we have been a bit extravagant watering the garden. That will change. Of course it is not really hot yet and we have not used the air-conditioning - I understand that adds A LOT! My first Etisalat bill (phone/internet/TV ) also gave me a heart attack so I am using Skype and cutting down on calls, also we have cancelled the TV package which we never watched.

Hi Smatty, What area do you live in? I know somebody in Jumeira if that is reasonably close?

Hi HorizonMum2, home theatre sounds very grand. We also recently moved and I used a guy called Imran initially to get wifi throughout the house but he also sorted my TV so he would be worth talking to - 055 8203401.

Another voice of reassurance, Appeltiser. My son was about six before he mastered rrrrr. If you want to practise the sound "round and round the rugged rock the ragged rascal ran" (say how many rs in that and you're a clever man)

Thanks for the tips. I shall have such fun today recording imitation monkey sounds and creating a scarecrow - might bring out my artistic side! Worth a try :-)

I also have a locked iPhone - well I have had an email from O2 UK that it is now unlocked but it still doesn't work with my Dubai SIM card. Does anyone know any clever people who are clever with technology?

m-king, ask your mum if she remembers the Grahams from back in the day. My parents are Joyce and Brian and worked with Unilever living down on Jumeira beach. Not sure how old you are but there are 4 of us siblings who were all at the English Speaking School :-)

I lived here in the '60s and '70s and don't recall ever wearing a jumper or long trousers. It could be rose tinted memories of course ...

I had help doing my complete house with a great lady who works for a design company but does private clients in her own time at a very reasonable rate. She has been in Dubai years and knows lots of places to get things which I, as a new arrival, didn't have a clue about. I found her details through EW - name Meeva, 0507262814.
