I would say recommend the Raffi salon in Radisson Blu Media City. Or Le Salon in Dubai Marine hotel Senorita do you have someone specific you can recommend there. I'm looking for a new place for a cut and blow dry. I have long thick brown hair and want them much shorter now that it gets so hot. It's quite a big change and I want to make sure I get a good stylist (if at all possible!!!) edited by oreo on 15/03/2011

True, there is a lot of things to do indoors during the summer and plenty of AC everywhere, but it's still a shock if you have never lived in a climate like this. I would suggest you move in April so your body gradually gets use to it. Before, I could not stand 35 degrees, but after 3 summers here (including spending 1 month in Canada in July), 35 is fine, but 40 + is not easy. The problem is also Ramadan where they close all the food outlets, food court, restaurant all day until it's time to break the fast. That can be very hard if you go out with little ones and not easy to eat in public (I think you're not supposed to eat+drink in public at all). Obviously, it's ok for kids, and I do it in certain places (like play aeras), and no one will come and tell me kids cant eat cause its Ramadan (they are not even suppose to fast). It's just that it's a big change and you don't need the shock of teh weather on top of that. And so very true also that you will have a harder time processing anything adminwise in the summer and Ramadan....Just too slow and too hot

My son attended the nursery for one term: I did not like it because: 1) All customers lebanese and teachers as well. I felt a bit like an outsider. 2) Not so sure about teachers qualifications 3) They had a huge turtle and some chickens which would poop everywhere: very dangerous for hygiene! 4) dark classrooms and old toys In other words, that's what you get for that price!

Go to the party CEntre in Al Ghurair (am I right in the spelling)? They have all the material and themes you can think of. I remember seeing there everything you can think of for an hawaiin party including the skirts you are talking about. THere is also a party centre behing MOE in front of LULU, but much smaller, also another one in Motor City.

I went and loved it, the food was the best I had in Dubai in the last 3 years. I tfelt fresh and clean. Portion on appetizers are too small I have to agree and bread should come with the meal (not as an extra). Other than that, the restaurant has a great atmosphere and we had a great time. Helped though that they gave us a discount because they were understaffed and service was a bit slow...

LP I would start looking for another place now. It's completely unreasonable to make you pay school fees to finance facilities which don't exists. 5 years is way too long to wait for basic facility such as a pool. It's completely unfair as most expats will spend a limited number of years here and you should not finance the facilities for future expats. Who where you'll be in 5 years? You should now start looking for new places and the school are now doing the registration process for next year. Also it's not uncommon in DUbai to change schools as a lot of them have issues.

Cyclone t please read the following: Positive Discipline from Jane Nelsen and you will see that what has been done to you and your brother is not acceptable. Discipline is not about pain and shame, it's about firmness, respect, and learning logical consequences. I'm no expert, but I cannot forgive my mum for hitting me with a wooden spoon when I was young because I had forgotten my alphabet back from the 1st day of school to do my homework. It's not the right way and what these people deserve is way more/worst then a few days in jail...

I took lessons with active sport and did not like it at all. My son was too young and was not interested and they were just trying to fill the pool with as many kids as they could every half hour. IT was terrible. I recommend Super Sports, they are amazing, especially Lisa.

Best thing to do is to stick to the language you're confortable with and comes naturallly, and to always speak int hat language. You're DH should speak in another language of your choice. One parent, one langauge.

Apparently, it's based on a book released in 2004 about discipline that kids should "feel physical pain" when being punished. DIdn't clearly hear the name of the author, but she looked pretty crazy... What do you think about that? How disgusting, unrespectful, and low....

What I try to do generally is to be courteous and civilized to other people so they appreciate what it is, as it's rare to have people courteous to you here. They are usually thankful and I think this is the attitude to have, on my good days...

Thanks all, thats really helpful. Where is Dr. Isabella located? Which clininc? Do you have a particular dentist at Dr MIchaels? SimpleasABC your story is very scary. Can you tell me which clinic you went to? A child should not be full of blood when he comes out of doctor office, as they have all the equipment to vaccuum it (if this is the right word...)!?

sit down with her to explain to her safety and precautions to be taken around the house: fire, gaz, oven, microwave, how to switch off the water, how to switch off teh power, water faucet , etc...To make he rpay or not is up to you. I would be very tempted to deduct a certain amount from her pay every month to cover for the 3000dhs, but then it's easier said then done. Also have her take a CPR class if you guys have kids its quite important.

good luck with your search but I think this happens a lot here. Employers get away with bad manners that they would never get away with elsewhere, and it's not the UAE employers I'm talking about....(only talking about the interview process though, not the actual job)

I really wonder sometimes what they are thinking. THis salary you're paying her is quite good compare to salaries back in her country. It's a job and she needs to follow your rules or else she looses it? Will she be better off unemployed? You should make her realise that...

go with green people. It's safe and it's so good. We have had ours installed 2.5 years ago and it doesn't fate, doesn't get to hot even in july and it's very easy to clean. It makes a huge difference on your garden and saves us loads of water and fertilizer and grass headaches.

I have used their mini pachage for my son 3yo b-day but I negociated a reduced price as I did not want the bouncing castle. The party entertainer I had was amazing. Her face painting was a work of art, her games were great and v. age appropriate, and she worked so hard during all the party even making balloons twisting while the kids were eating. She even stayed longer for us then the 2 hours because we wanted to eat first and then sing the happy b-day with the cake.

OK I'm repeating myself just got disconnected! Don't go and buy expensive baby gear to try and control a 10 months old. All he wants at this age is to get out of these things and start to explore. Try to have a routine where you have a time to clean, a time to cook, a time to go out with your child to play. Probably you have one but maybe if you have more structure, your life and his will seem more in control. Also, get into a playgroup, or go to the playground and the pool so you can mingle with other mums and have a bit of a mental break. Dont worry soon he'll play on his own and you'll have more time for you, and you will miss the time when he was 10 months old!

I think they don't bring anything here in the hope that we will buy them a whole closet. THat's what mine did anyway. She did not even have proper shoes to walk in the mall. THe other day I noticed she was walking outside with barely no warm sweaters and I told her I gave her all my fleece last year and don't have anything more so I gave her 2 of my thick cotton jumpers that I am not wearing anymore. (She had shipped everything last year to the Philipines). Today, surprise, she came out of her room with a fleece sweater she had been given by a relative...I gave her some things I don't wear anymore and will help her if she really has nothing but that's it! She does go shopping for herself anyway
