There was a thread on here about a month back about getting a writers group going. Might be worth a search to try to find the organizers.

Maghrabi on D Ring (airport end, opposite side from Lulu). It's an eye specialty hospital. Doctors are there (generally take walk-ins) from 8 or 9 until 12:30, and then again after 4.

My nails have always been paper thin and brittle. I wore acrylics for a couple of years - first with extensions underneath and later just as overlays as my nails grew longer. Removed them last year, and my awful nails were no worse for it. Thinking about doing it again, but the maintenance got really tired...

Avon Skin So Soft definitely works! Years ago (I'm talking 10 or 15) it was marketed as a skin softener (baby oil like) and then people started realizing that it had magical bug repellent capabilities, and then Avon re-marketed it! Not that you can actually get it here, so... I was at an outdoor restaurant here last Spring that put coffee grounds in the ashtrays and burned it as a fly repellant. Its kind of seemed to work.

I'm pretty sure that when you use the shop and ship rate calculator it only matters where you are shipping to, not from. So if it's the same item, go with the cheaper one. I generally only buy from us amazon unless its electrical or it's not available on us site.

Our Hamad cards have expired, plus I have moved since I originally registered so not sure if my local health center would take me. Any suggestions for private clinics with sane wait times for pediatric walk in? The only doctor he's been to in the past few years has been the orthopedist, so I've no clue with pediatrics. Thanks.

The cooler night air makes ALL the difference! I am now doing C25K for the 2nd time - it's a brilliant program. Stopped running for about a year due to assorted injuries, and started up again recently. Last night was the first time in ages that the thick humid air didn't kill me - it was actually cool and breezy! Margarita you don't have to be particularly fit to start. You can start at any fitness level, and just repeat weeks if you don't feel ready to move on. I know quite a few runners in Doha who started running with that program, and who are now signed up to do the 10K next month (I'm not one of them, but they're out there!!)

I saw a podiatrist at Aspetar - Dr. Greg Tanner. I recommend him highly! Only downside is that there are always long waits for appointments there!

Before we can help much with schools advice it would be helpful to know curriculum preferences and the ages of your kids.

I don't know - but in my experience the Khulood Pharmacy at Burger King Roundabout seems to be the most well stocked pharmacy in town. I have NEVER not found what I'm looking for there -and learned this by being referred there by countless other pharmacies. Worth a shot.

If you are looking for a private physician, I highly (and I mean HIGHLY) recommend Dr. Tareq Sheikh, who is the head of internal medicine at Al Ahli. If you explain that you want an annual with bloodwork, he'll be completely there. In fact, Al Ahli has "packages" for women (well woman packages for over and under 40 - including bloodwork and woman-type tests) and they very well might have a similar package for me. Unfortunatly the best way to get info at Al Ahli is to go in - phone is hit-or-miss at best.

Assuming that the agency is an employment agency and not your direct employer, do as marycatherine suggests and speak directly with the employer. Regarding the question of whether you can sponsor our kids and DH, speak to the person responsible for immigration. It is most certainly allowed in some cases - particularly with more senior positions and in certain industries (including education and healthcare, and others that I'm not sure of). With regard to the question of benefits, speak to the most senior HR person you can. This is a separate question from the sponsorship, and is an internal company decision. In many cases if the employer will provide family benefits (health and education and flights) you may need to submit a letter from your husband's employer stipulating that they are not providing these same benefits - fair enough I suppose. So if by agency you mean employment or recruitment agency, try to get directly in touch with the employer. If you mean government agency and you will be working for them directly, you might be out of luck, as most tend not to be particularly flexible. In either case, follow up! And good luck...

Would have replied sooner, but like carathop I had to log in. Again. To the mods, I say: 4 hours? HA!!!! Unless 30 minutes is the new 4 hours and I missed the trend. Seriously annoying. I know it's a free site, but still - it's gotten way less user friendly since the "update."

Steelers43 we looked at them recently for my husband. I can't remember the price, but do remember that the Sportage was loaded with great features and as its a bit smaller it was even less than the Sorento. He's leaning heavily toward getting the Sportage.

As far as I know, if you are driving in Qatar once your RP has been issued it has to be on a Qatari license. You can use an international license when you are still on a tourist visa. Best to get the temporary Qatari license ASAP, especailly if your RP is in process.

Thanks Newbie - now I'm all confused! The friend who has one suggested the small. She has the large, and says she ends up filling it up (especially for fries) and making more than she should cause they're just so yummy. Thought the smaller size might help with portion control. But now you've got me thinking... Off to C4 in a bit, and we'll see what I'm moved to do at the moment! update... Well if I wasnt' already confused enough about the size, I got to C4 to find they also had the Philips Airfryer, at a slightly less cost than the large Actifry. Wandered over to Costa and got online to read reviews and comparisons. Plenty of people seem to favor one over the other, but pretty much in equal numbers. I was torn, but went with the Actifry (large one) in the end. Not sure I can say why. First batch of chips or in there now - 500 gm of chips with 1 Tbsp oil. And going to peruse the recipe book now... edited by RachelA on 07/10/2011

Thanks! I once compared the price to Amazon + shop and ship, and I don't think the difference was too bad. I'll be happy with the smaller size- we're a small family... Will check them out.

I think the Marriott would be a good choice. Lots of salads, and I'm pretty sure the Indian station has some meat-free options. And veggie sushi (California rolls) are definitely available. I have friends who are vegetarians and they always seem to leave there full!

I can't remember where I saw it - but I know there's a website that lets you input your available ingredients and it comes up with recipe alternatives. I'm thinking it might be Weight Watchers, but it also might have been a dedicated cooking site. If I can find it again I'll update here.

I've decided to take the wimpy way out and have AAA do the re-registration for me. They do this as part of their "Gold" membership - I just have to give them the car and insurance papers and they take the car and deal with it. Somehow easier than taking a day - or even a morning - off work for it. Thanks for all the info though - no doubt it's useful to have.

I highly recommend the Bobbi Brown solution. There's a duo with concealer/powder, and for those with particularly dark discoloration (like me) there's a corrector that's applied first. In my case (and many others out there) they are genetic, and nothing will get rid of them save perhaps surgery. If they are the result of too much play and not enough rest, then yes, more water more sleep and more sunscreen should help.

Old Airport road actually runs perpendicular to Airport road - about 1/2 way between D and E Ring Roads. At the Airoport Road end there is a Pizza Hut and at the far other end there is a Pappa Johns. If you are coming from C or D Ring direction, it's the signal after D Ring - turn right (it's the only way to turn, as the airport is on the left). The key places that I've been to are on the right side - toward the far end. Hope this helps more than it confuses!

I have no idea why an NOC would be needed, but it was. When I asked the PRO at my work about it, they already had a standard letter that they use. Essentially the sponsor of the person buying the car should give one. I bought a new car a few years ago, and honestly cannot recall if I had such a letter then.

Sorry it's not near villagio, but the only 2 places that I've ever used were either the one on the basement level of City Center (underneath Carrefour) or there are a lot of shops along Old Airport Road that do it.

Baffled, I think so but I can't be sure because the PRO of the person I bought the car from handled all of it. I gave him my papers (copy of my ID and an NOC from my employer) and we went to the traffic department a few days later, by which point he had already gotten whatever needed to be translated done. What I do know (and this I learned the hard way) that the buyer AND seller both need to be there, live and in person. AND if the car has full insurance, the insurance needs to be transferred before you can do the sale. If it's just 3rd party insurance apparently it does not need to be changed. Good luck!

That's a nice early warning for American thanksgiving too, because by the time ours rolls around the shelves are usually empty again! I remember a few years ago the small Megamart was the only place that had any cans left as the end of November approached, and you had to go and ask them to bring some out to you as it was hidden in the back and not on the shelves. I heart pumpkin pie!

So happy to hear it Dan Lou! I do think it's one of Doha's hidden gems. There is really no advertising since it fills up just by word of mouth, so I'm glad that posting it here brought the word to a few EWs! It is baseball season in my house! The start of Little Leage in Qatar coincides with the start of the postseason playoffs in the US, so it's really all baseball, all the time! Play ball!!

Excellent - thanks all!! I love the Starbuck's idea, but I think they might not be strong enough to hold an apple coated in thick gooey caramel. As kitsune said, the problem with getting anywhere these days is the traffic! I might give Lakeland a shot - despite my hatred of City Center. Thanks again.

Stretch19 thanks for that info - very reassuring. I might just get the international one anyway - as an "it can't hurt, can it?" kind of back-up. Regency on C Ring and I are old friends. Worth knowing that they are opened 24 hours!!! When my grandmother passed away I got the news late at night, and went to Regency at about midnight to sort the tickets - quite incredible. I have to say that generally I find their agents quite helpful. I actually went there a few days ago to ask someone about the expedia booking I was making as it was an almost too good to be true price. The woman at Regency tried to replicate the booking but came up with an almost double price. She was incredibly nice about walking me through the differences in the ticket conditions. DUH! I was there, and totally forgot to inquire about the International License. Guess I'll be going back! Thanks all - once again EW comes through with the answers!!

To Party Kingdom: Come down Salwa Road - the Ramada part, not the Decoration r/a part. Head down (so Ramada is on your right, then pass The Center). After the Center go under the Jaidah flyover and take a left at the roundabout underneath. This is the road where Party Kindgom is, but it's on the left so you will have to make a u-turn at the next roundabout. Stay on your right, because that roundabout is above the underpass. U-turn at roundabout, then head back toward the roundabout under Jaidah flyover, and the parking lot where Party Kingdom is is BEFORE you get back to the Jaidah flyover. It's a small set of shops - Party Kingdom is on the right, and there's a QNB ATM in the middle of the parking lot. Hope this helps!

Thanks katcalls. The thought of going to City Center is actually painful, but its great to know that there are travel agencies that do this. I posted the question on Regency's facebook page as they have a lot of branches, most in places much less daunting than CC! If they do issue, I'll come back here and update.

Thanks Dan Lou! I love that their website doesn't say their location (other than "C Ring Road" - that certainly narrows it down!) or their hours or the cost. I've emailed them - hoping to get an actual reply. Otherwise I'll call. So very typical. We'll give you 1/3 of the required information, and leave you to guess the rest!! But it's a great starting place - so seriously Thanks.
