Thanks for the update. It is much nicer to navigate. However I do miss being able to see how many replies a thread has. I prefer to see that then how many views a thread has. Just a little feedback :) I agree. It would be helpful if you were notified when you had a comment to any thread you were watching or added. You could then respond quicker if people are needing advice or information. xx

Hey guys Where would you recomend for a good hairdresser I need someone who can do a good job with Color and a decent haircut Thanks x Hi I have an amazing British girl who comes to your home. Brilliant with high and low lights etc and cut. She is very friendly too. If you want to post your email I will forward info. Just had her again yesterday. Just so you know, she is going away in about 3 weeks for a holiday. But believe me I have had some horrific experiences here, not only with colour but also the amount of foils they put in as some just flick through to be quick. It's so annoying when they charge the prices they do as well. She is very reasonable and does a great job. Highly recommend her. ;)

Hello ladies. I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me please. If I ordered an item of clothing online from Australia would I have to pay taxes on it after arrival here in Dubai?

Hi Debbiew, try getting an opinion from the Wooridul Spine Centre, if you google it you will get the info, a friend has had several back ops and says they were good. Thank you so much.:)

What are they saying is the problem? Different physios work in different ways. I went to several, who didn't do much for my back. Then I went to Excellency at Souk Al Bahar - they're quite new - but they sorted it within a few weeks as their approach is slightly different. Look at alternatives and consider surgery the absolute last resort. edited by FairyDust on 27/04/2015 Following MRI scan they basically are saying a disc in my lumbar region is decreasing and therefore causing nerve spasms.

DH had his upper back operated on by Dr. Zbiggy J. Brodzinsky at the Dubai Bone and Joint Centre. He was fantastic and did the op only as a last resort. Perhaps worth getting a second opinion

Hi ladies. Since having an MRI scan for a lower back pain and having lots of Physio I returned to my GP as all seems pointless and not helping. GP said, in his opinion I would require an operation. Obviously this sounds very scary to me and also I have heard from a few people that some like to operate here as they get paid well by the medical insurances we have. Not sure if these are just rumours though. However I would like to know if anyone of you ladies could recommend a good back specialist I could go to that would give me an honest second opinion. Thanks in advance.

Where in the world is their a regulatroy body that comes and inspects properties? Hi, it was a suggestion that stricter guidelines or inspections 'should' be made available here for landlords to follow with regards to maintaining the upkeep of their properties and its contents. I have heard of people having problems such as damp coming through walls and onto their furniture, tenants building access cards not working as landlords do not pay their building maintenance. Yes there is no such regulatory body here to protect the tenant but there should be. Most landlords just take their money sometimes never to be seen again, if at all.The tenant is left high and dry for the whole year or they could leave early loosing rent paid or take the landlord to court. All the while the landlord is happy with his years rent and will rent it out again just paying for a quick lick of paint so it looks clean and damp free for the next unsuspecting tenant. RERA need to get this sorted to protect the tenant more.

Some time ago I was getting extremely strong cooking smells in my main bedroom coming from another apartment. After continuously having maintenance in and being told they couldn't find any problems and also getting them visit when we had this smell too. Finally they decided to use expanding foam in certain areas in that A/C section as they finally found gaps surrounding pipes. This thankfully worked and those smells stopped all together. But to date they are still trying to find a solution to the A/C problem in our daughters room. Sometimes her A/C can smell so bad it will even wake her up if it is put on for at least an hour. This smell then travels through the rest of the apartment so we have no choice but to turn hers off which is just not acceptable. Today they have just left our apartment saying that the A/C is being repaired in the building as we speak and should be cooler tomorrow. They say there may be a solution to the bad smell but obviously this will once again cost the landlord, and we have to see A if it will work and B if he is willing to pay for it. So I am not sure if this once again is a ploy to keep me quiet or if in fact it will work. But if it has taken them since February to find a solution I am not holding out much hope. Yes we would love to move out but we paid for a year just like most tenants and we would lose at least 3 months rent by doing that and lets be honest if people like me didn't stamp their feet in situations like this then following tenants would experience the same nightmare and I don't think that is right at all. There is a Community Wall on the net for tenants in JLT and it appears I am certainly not the only one complaining or experiencing similar A/C problems in this tower. So I hope I am helping people by posting this. Afterall rents are going crazy and we live in a country where we have to have A/C so it should be clean air and cold air. When you view a property the A/C is not usually working so you just assume it will be good don't you? edited by debbieiw on 03/09/2014

I live in GCV2 and have just renewed my tenancy for another year. The only issue I have had is in the last couple of weeks when I use my a/c in my bedroom. The smell of cigarette smoke that filters through is disgusting. Apart from that I have had no issues and the tower is significantly nicer than a number of others I viewed in the area.

We are on the 18 th floor. Believe me when our tenancy expires I will be gone. But seriously it is disgusting. They make the whole tower look so nice and obviously landlords will only praise it to get more tenants in. Yes we were told it was a design issue too. Then they blame Palm District Cooling, then they blame possibly the bin shoot. You constantly pay for maintenance to come in and they do all these jobs to try and rectify things over and over again. I know there are still issues with other tenants relating to their A/C too but every department just continuously blames one another. So you have been warned, stay away from Goldcrest Views 2, JLT.

I would like to update anyone searching for apartments in JLT. I have lived in Goldcrest Views 2 since February. Since moving in I have had maintenance constantly in and out of the apartment as the A/C is disgusting. Bad smells in our daughters room and the apartment. The tower A/C is useless. You can put the A/C on the coolest setting possible, which believe me isn't cold and even if you have it on all day it still isnt cold enough. All the while your bills to Palm District Cooling just keep going up and up. The tower is lovely, the pool is lovely, the lobby is very nice and good security. But the A/C lets the whole tower down. Please please take my advice. Go elsewhere and save money. A/C is a must in this country. It might seem like a bargain but you'll be paying for it. edited by debbieiw on 01/09/2014 I know! I lived there for a year and suffered They can't fix it so dnt bother If u can't stand it like I did move out There's a problem with the design of the building and they have no solution, Tht was told to me by a top mgt individual after I called the police cos it was extremely hot and I had a baby infant. Which floor r u? It's not in all floors though

I really wish you luck , hopefully it shouldn't be too long now. I would also keep an eye out for your old passport by return too. To date all I get told from the British Passport Office is the documents were despatched on the 8 April. I received a call yesterday from the British Embassy in Kuwait. My old passport was sent to a resident there by mistake who very kindly handed it in. I have never been to Kuwait and there was no mention of the place on my application form either. The service just ceases to amaze me.

I think most people are aware that we don't pay UK income tax at this moment in time but many have done so and will do so again no doubt. It would be a great idea however to be given the OPTION of an express passport service to expats. I am sure many people having a visa issue, for whatever reason, would rather pay a little extra than incur daily fines that start at 700 AED. I think what you seem to not understand is that many residents in the UK probably travel once or twice a year possibly for holidays and the like, the rest of the year they wouldn't need their passports being in their home country. Expats however on the otherhand really do need their passports not only as a form of ID but also in Dubai for their visas. I am sure not everyone can just afford to jump on the next flight out to get a passport renewal and why should they? Having been through it very recently I do understand and empathise with many expats going through it and wish them all good luck.

Currently on a 30 day tourist visa (in between jobs) Need to renew my UK passport Since you're between jobs, can't you just find the cheapest possible flight back to the UK, do a long weekend and get a new passport using the same-day service? Remember, we're now into the period when the passport office gets busy, with people renewing their passports before the summer holidays. The two slowest times of year are post-New Year and post-summer, that's when you can get the 10-day turnarounds. Their service for people abroad is unacceptable Why should Britons abroad be treated as special cases? We're not paying UK income tax, after all. Our renewal applications go into the same general pile as everybody else's. Everybody reckons they're a special case, everybody's got a reason for wanting their passport back faster than the next person. The passport office can't listen to every plea for special treatment, especially since they know perfectly well that the vast majority of cases are down to people simply not planning far enough ahead and suddenly realising they need to renew their passport at the last minute. The resources department where I used to work had a big sign above its door - "Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part". It's hard to argue with that. edited by Madge_Gustard on 15/04/2014

Hi Nikki63, Don't ask how I did it but managed to get through with just new passport. Pure luck as in large group. Luckily I had photocopy of old one but not visa page. They once again couldn't understand why I had no old passport with visa in. Suppose I really should have taken copy of last visa but never thought to be honest. Luckily as I had the photocopy of old main page of old passport they logged onto their system and found proof of last visa. Had to pay 410 and was told price would go up every day if I didn't pay for the 3 days I had overstayed. So paid the fine and got temp visa finally. Still was cheaper than immigration here. I still have no old passport and after enquiring how much longer the email I received was very blunt and basically said sent out on the 8th. As I really don't need it now, only because I was very lucky, I honestly wouldn't like to tell you my response after tiptoeing round them for so long. Just so annoyed that we get fines through no fault of our own. If they are unable to supply an express service to expats then they should at least supply them with an ID or something that is accepted by officials here stating last visa and that passport is in renewal process and allowing them to travel in emergency too. Either that or the UK Passport office should pay our fines. I can't see happening either. Either way I will let you know if and when my old one actually arrives so that you may get some idea. I am afraid I was rather rude and asked them if it was arriving by camel and may be I should reapply now ready for my new one in 10 years!!! Sorry but I was just so annoyed having to pay fines etc..... I really wish you luck, just such an awful situation to be in. Nice to know someone understands too. xx edited by debbieiw on 14/04/2014

Hi Debbieiw I'm in the same boat as you. Thanks for the tip, have also emailed Paul Pugh also put something on Facebook, basically no one cares, they didn't even think it through when the only option for those abroad was to just send off their passports and hope for the best. I would have happily paid for an express service. Looks like it will be very expensive as it not just mine but also my daughters pass port, so that is fines x2. Last year my friend got hers back in one week, have no idea why the service is so bad and unpredictable. Will let you know of outcome

After having no luck from UK passport office in speeding up my application I had to email MP Paul Pugh. Finally got a reply with apology and new passport arrived this morning. However problems have not stopped there. I have been told I can either go to immigration here in Dubai and pay fine of 700 and then daily fines, or i could risk going on Oman run but could get stopped at first check point as no passport with visa on. I have to wait for my old passport to arrive until I can do this. Just been told that my old passport could be at least 10 days after receiving my new one. So going to get higher fines through no fault of my own. So bad. The UK overseas passport application service really needs speeding up or other expats will be in the same boat. I have sent another email off to see if they can speed up the return of my old passport now. I will let everyone interested know the outcome and fines imposed at the end. The funny thing is, when I needed a first time British Passport for my daughter it took just 10 days.

Passport office received my renewal application forms on the 5th March. To date no one ,I have been told has even looked at them. 2 days ago Liverpool were only dealing with the 28th Feb. All I get told is we are very busy with overseas applications. I wouldn't mind I have a temp visa stamp on it and that has now expired. I explained my visa situation in a cover letter with my form as I was advised to do. I am now, from Wednesday, going to incurr fines for each day my visa is out of date. Was advised by British Embassy here to go to Ministry of Interior to explain. They told me I could either pay 700 AED for an extra 20 days and 100 each day after that. Or I could wait until my new passport actually arrives and take it back in and they will discuss the fine then. They couldn't understand why I have no other ID apart from a photocopy of my old passport either. Obviously we have to send this off with your application form.Today I have once again asked the passport office if they could update me on the status of my application and once again stressed the fact that I am now going to incurr fines. The lady said well all I can say is that it is now being looked at but it could be even a few weeks yet !! Just crazy when you can go and get a passport while you wait now in the UK and also other services to speed up the process but not for overseas applicants. Not sure why they are now unable to deal with the work load in the UK. Maybe because it no longer is being dealt with via Germany anymore? My advise is take copies of application, passport copy and visa page and also proof of courier , just incase you need them for proof here. I will let you know the outcome. Thank god I wont have to do it for another 10 years.....I hope not anyway. In future I would advise anyone who is due for renewal to make an appointment when visiting the UK and go and get one while you wait. Less stress, hassle and cost. There are certain places that issue this way. If you are worried about trip to Thailand I would seriously enquire about an emergency passport, and if Thailand would accept one as they might be strict with the 6 month validity. I wouldn't risk it, would be so bad to ruin your holiday too. I hope all goes well for you. edited by debbieiw on 08/04/2014
