We are currently having all the ? fittings taken off from above our windows externally. Is this a temporary thing? is it just so the windows can be washed and then they put them all back on again? Or is it permanent? What is the ? for before fittings? I can't for the life of me figure out what they're taking off externally!

I just got back from the UK on Saturday...it's April so they're going thru the usual bout of wacky weather. I arrived to 18 degrees Celcius, that last two days, then it dropped down to 1 degrees (literally overnight! The North had proper snow, we just saw some snowflakes), and then about 5 days later it settled at around 11 degrees. I was in the Midlands. So very unpredictable, plus rain! My advice is that you probably don't need a winter coat, I didn't really wear mine even though I took it. Just make sure you have some sort of rain coat and then rely on lots of layers. Perhaps a warm cardigan or jumper that you can wear under a raincoat...plus a few t-shirts. That way you pretty much have any situation covered.

Hi Noddy, To add an email address you need to go into "Settings" and then select "Mail, contacts, Calendars" and then under "Accounts" touch "Add Account..." and follow the instructions. It's really easy. iMessage is supposed a free text messaging service between iPhone users. So you send a free iMessage from iPhone to iPhone and then you pay for text messages to other people as normal. The iMessage and the Text Message facility are both in "Messages", if the message goes in green then you have paid for it, if it's in blue then its a free iMessage. Now I said "supposedly" free, and thats because often my messages to other iphone users go in green so I'm not sure when iMessage is supposed to work. the best thing to do is download WhatsApp, which is a free messaging service to any other phone that also has WhatsApp. You may have to pay for this app, but its only a couple of $s and completely worth it. It work over 3G and Wifi depending on what contract you have. It will automatically detect who of your contacts also have WhatsApp and you can send them messages (not like BBM where you have to add another person's pin in order to send them messages). In terms of other Apps, then you can pretty much go wild with whatever you like. DrawSomething is the new craze which is a bit like pictionary - hours of amusement! There are hundreds of thousands of games so it really depends on what you like, but be prepared to spend hours with your iPhone in your hand!!! Other good App to get are Skype, Tango, Viber which are free voice call or video call Apps which allow you to talk to other people that have these Apps for free. You may struggle to download them in the UAE so you might have to do this when abroad. I think Du wireless users are able to have better access to these Apps than Etisalat, but I'm not 100% sure. I love everything about my iPhone - I would never get another brand of phone now :D

A more technical question: How can you book a flight for an unborn baby? What I have always done is book for myself and anyone else in advance as usual, and then ring the airline as soon as the baby is born and has a name and birthdate. Baby's don't need their own seat so you don't have to worry about availability, and once the airline sees your booking they just add it to the booking and take payment over the phone. Babies tickets are cheap because it's 10% of the ticket price, so even if the ticket becomes ridiculously expensive it still wont be that bad if you're only paying 10%. This was the advice that was given to me by the airlines when I called to ask the same question.

Hi ilovewine, I had the exact same problem with my daughter when she was about the same age, she's now 9 months and happily alternates between breast and bottle (just to reassure you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!). Just a few tips, which you may or may not find useful. Firstly, I would try and give him the bottle at the time of his regular feeds, so that he knows this is instead of a normal breastfeed and not in addition to it (i.e. it's not optional!). Secondly, I used to put my daughet in a completely different position, she had a bouncy/rocking chair which I would sit her in and face her and then give her the bottle, so that she wasn't in the normal feeding position, thus not confusing her. Finally, make sure that you don't try the bottle and when that fails offer him your breast, this will just mean that he learns that if he fights it enough then he will ultimately get what he really wants. You do just need to persevere with this - don't distress him and let him get angry and frustrated, each day try for a few minutes and then stop. He will get there! With regards to storage of breast milk, I think CB is correct. I used to throw away milk that had been in the fridge and heated (as hard as that is to do as breast milk is so precious!), however if I was feeding her milk I had pumped fresh then I was happy to store it.

we had 3 Iphone here. And would never buy one again The first one was mine and I had to buy in emergency a new phone when Iphone started to be so hot that I was afraid it would explode in my face while I was talking. 2 others were for my teenagers. Both had their screen broken...several time.... Several of other friends also had their Iphone screen broken, and yes, it brokes quite easily unless you are super extra carefull. And cost a fortune to change. Other thing : you can not open it to take the battery out. So when there is a bug....just need to wait until the battery is empty... Doesn't happen that often, yet it happens, and usually at the worst time. we have now 3 Galaxy's at home and love them. Eldest one is the Galaxy 1 for DS and although it has more than one year, still working perfectly, never had any problem. Fell certainly several times and never had a broken screen or any damage. Galaxy 2 are very nice. Design is beautiful IMO, works great and fast, screen is clear and light (you can still see in the sun). I find them a bit to big for a woman. Yet, the screen is a good size so it's nice and easy to check emails, etc... We also use them as GPS instead of our car GPS - which are never up to date. Easy and practical. ;-) Skype is also installed, so as soon as I enter under a wi-fi connection, family can call me on skype. (But I'm sure these features are the same or similar on Iphone). We also love the fact that we can download free apps for androids. I'm not sure about Iphone, but as I know Apple, nothing is entirely free with them... I have dropped my iPhone a million times and so far the screen hasn't broken! Having said that I do have a rubber cover with the front bumper (my 4 year old and DH think my phone is their toy...haha not sure who I should worry about most!). The screen may break because it is made of glass instead of plastic, but other phones break as well for other reasons. You can download a ton of free apps on the iPhone :-) outheredxb, like somebody else said I think you should have a play around with them in the shop and see what looks/feels best for you. Unnfortunately, everybody has a different experience and opinion (which is normal!) so I don't think any of us can really advise you. At the end of the day, they are all good phones so I doubt you're going to regret your decision whichever way you go.

I have applied to pre school nurseries too after ur advice, (SEY83) i am relieved now, and will stop putting pampers on her from today! thanks all again! :) Don't worry SidKhan, it will work out for you - there are some fantastic nurseries if you don't find any schools. My daughter goes to Safa Nursery which is behind the French Bakery, and they have another branch next to Safa Park (New Safa Nursery) in case you're interested - they offer a full KG1 program. Also, I'm very happy to hear that you are going to stop the pampers! As AD said, be prepared with some spare clothes, but usually all it takes is one accident in public and they learn from it very quickly! Unfortunately, unless they actually experience feeling wet then they don't learn, but she will get there :)

Hi SidKhan, my daughter attended one FS2 assessment this year at Horizon and the teachers basically took the children whilst the parents waited outside. It was about 30 minutes long. I'm not really sure if FS1 is different. I think with some schools parents are allowed in so you can see the children but the children would still be expected to go with the teacher. I think what they are trying to understand from these assessments is your child's social skills and how well they cope without their parents. In regards to your question about nappies, my understanding is that she has to be fully toilet-trained by the time she attends school - I'm not sure if this will affect the assessment but they definitely need to be reassured that your daughter will be fully toilet trained come September. I think you should stop putting pampers on her when you go out because it isn't actually helping her. Yes you will have a few accidents, but this is normal and eventually she will get used to public toilets whether she likes it or not! From your replies, I'm not sure if you have considered the opton for doing FS1 at nursery or not. From what you have described about your daughter, I think you should give this option some serious consideration because it is easier for them to adjust to nursery than be thrown in a big school. Plus, nurseries are generally more flexible. Often schools will come back after the assessment and recommend that you put your child in nursery for a year and then reapply for FS2.

Like BNBH I adore my iPhone :) I was actually a BB user upuntil November but finally converted to iPhone, I would never go back!! It's so simple to use, so much fun, I've never had any issues with it at all. Aand yes, the autocorrect is annoying, but you get used to it (or u can switch it off!) I'm actually convinced that I now type significantly faster on my iPhone than I did on my BB and autocorrect is part of the reason why - I thought i would miss the full keyboard but i really dont! Having said all of that, I have heard from very techy people that the Samsungs are better phones. For me, I'm not a techy so I doubt that if I have a Samsung I would feel like it was better than the iPhone. Plus I love Facetime! My family back home all have iPhones and I talk to them on Facetime all the time, it's fantastic! I would say go for the iPhone!

Yes unfortunately what you are hearing is true, and waiting lists are horrendous. I applied to three schools in September 2011 for FS2 and my daughter was rejected by two of the schools because the waiting list was so long. I wouldn't panic though, if your child is FS1 then you do have the option of doing FS1/KG1 at a nursery as many nurseries offer this and then move them to a school for FS2 in 2013. The advantage of this is nurseries are generally cheaper and have smaller class sizes. If your child isn't at nursery already then this option may be better as its easier for them to adjust to school later. This is what I did with my daughter and it has worked out perfectly for us. Obviously this option will mean you don't waste a schooling year for your child, plus you can waitlist your child for FS2 at your preferred schools from now meaning you have a better chance of securing a place at your top choice. edited by SEY83 on 26/03/2012

Hi Quicksilver, unfortunately I don't think there is anything you can do. We're in the same situation and signed a non-renewable lease in December. Basically our LL tried to make us leave about 20 days before we had to renew (as he wanted to sell) and we told him he doesnt have the right to do that. He then renewed our lease but did it as non-renewable as he still intends to sell. I'm dreading the thought of moving, but I have asked a real estate agent and they told me that we don't have any legal right to renewing at all, we gave that up when we signed the lease as non-renewable. Even if the LL decides to re-rent the apartment to somebody else, he is entitled to do that. The only way we can stay in the apartment is if we negotiate with him a new lease and agree to his terms.

Yes bad mistake if you already don't have enough hours in the day!! Marroosh please report back and let us know if your as hooked as me and OP. Purple, it's like pictionary for the iphone/ipad/android. It's basically an app where you play against somebody (be it somebody you know or somebody random) and you have to choose one of three pics - easy, medium, hard - and basically draw it for them. You then send your drawing to the other person and they have to guess what it is. Its sounds silly but its amazing how much fun it is. You get to watch the other person guess your drawing, then you guess their drawing (you're given twelve letters to spell the word), then you draw a pic and send it back to them. The point is to keep a streak going without either person messing up. Prepare to be hooked!!

Absolutely hilarious with loads of laugh out loud moments, I got many people hooked on it as well which resulted in lots of naming and shaming on Facebook with screenshots of drawings being posted up. Haven't laughed so much in a while! I now have about 17 games on the go!

It's worth at least talking to someone as you get face-to-face contact with a person here experienced in this type of purchase. So even if you don't go through them in the end, you can at least get some of your questions answered.

I know somebody that bought-to-let properties in the UK through a company called Sherwoods that's based here. They pretty much managed everything, the purchase of the apartments, the purchase of furniture for the apartments, getting in tenants, rent, etc. All you have to do is hand over the money. I don't know the specific details or how much they charge, but the person I know that dealt with them seemed very happy. Google Sherwoods and you should find their website.

Ok this probably isnt helpful but I need to say it :D I switched from Blackberry to iPhone about 4 months ago, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The typing is a bit pretentious at first, but you do get used to and then it's just second nature to you (I typed out a message on my husband's blackberry the other day and really struggled!) Once you get used to the typing, the iPhone seriously has no limits, the amount of things you can do with it is incredible. I know two other people that switched at the same time as me, and none of us would ever go back to Blackberry.

I know that it's supposedly highly contagious, so if one child has it then it will go around. I don't think it's something you can permanently treat so it does keep doing the rounds.. You should also treat all members of the household, I presume you have all used the medicated shampoo? Finally, you should wash everything, bed linen, clothes, hats, etc. It's one of those incredibly annoying things that we all have to deal with at some stage unfortunately.

Did you notify the school? I presume a letter went home to parents so that they can all treat their children. I don't know of a permanent solution, but unless all the parents are treating their children then my guess is that its just going to keep going around.

If you already have doubts then I suggest you go for one of the other towers, which have already had the snagging done. In the long term it will probably be less headache. I don't know what you mean by the big tank, our is in the laundry room and doesnt affect us at all - I don't think it has taps either but I could be wrong.

Are you sure you mean tower G? Tower G doesn't have balconies as far as I can see and is completely unlived in (my understanding is that there is a problem with the payment of that particular tower). It may be that they are now leasing apartments there but there are zero lights on at the moment. I think you may mean tower E, I have seen some there and they have the layout that you mention but yes the living area is small. I'm in tower H, we have a very big living room and only a small balcony, but it's the most expensive tower as its pretty much full. New apartments are now going for 130. I think tower M is also quite expensive and pretty full as well. Tower F doesn't have balconies at all in some of the apartments if you would prefer without a balcony, but I found the layout a bit odd and didnt like it compared to tower E which flows better. You could also try tower C. I think the cheaper rents are in towers C, E and F for 3-beds, but they have half windows instead of floor to ceiling windows. Higher floors are definitely more expensive, as is the view. The ones that face SZR or the burj are more expensive than the ones that face Al Khail.

I'm not sure, I walked by a couple of days ago and they have removed the boards, so hopefully not long to go. Having said that, there doesn't seem to be any equipment installed and the reception desk was still all covered up. I guess it could go either way - we've seen some places open in weeks (e.g. Subway) and other drag on for months (e.g. Muhyana Grill, which still hasn't opened!).

Totally agree CK30! I used them for a very brief period and stopped because of the smell. I was actually in Carrefour (or one of the big supermarkets) and there was a lady from Pampers doing customer surveys. She asked me for feedback and I told her that the Premium care, particularly the ones for newborns, smell disgusting. She said that many customers had commented on the same thing, but apparently nothing has been done as my baby is now 8 months! I personally switched to Huggies and think they're fantastic. Firstly, they smell normal. Secondly, I find that once a baby pees in Pampers they become very squishy, and feel full of water. Huggies aren't like this at all. They remain firm and absorb very very well. I highly recommend that you try them. They have an organic range for newborns. You can't find them in all supermarkets, especially mini-marts as Pampers have the bigger market share, but all large hypermarkets stock them. edited by SEY83 on 13/03/2012

I don't know! The docs keep telling me that after six months she no longer needs a night feed, and that her feed at night is more for comfort than hunger. Plus everyone else I know seems to have stopped their babies when they were weeks old as oppose to months old :( I am like you though and figure that her night feed will ultimately stop at some stage which is what happened with my eldest daughter, particularly once I give up breastfeeding. At the moment I don't have the heart to give up breastfeeding, as she seems to want it and its good for her, so I figure I will do that until she's a year old.

Hi Reynee, I'm kind of going through the same thing, but with one baby not twins. My LO is also 8 months old and still wakes up once or twice at night to feed. I'm still breastfeeding and I know that I should stop the night feeds as she no longer needs them, but in all honesty its the easier option than having her cry, particularly as I have to wake up to go to work. We are getting slightly better now and there are days when she will sleep straight through. She sleeps later than your children (around 9-10) which is because I work and so I want to spend maximum time time with her. I feed her before she sleeps and now she sleeps through until 4 or 5, but generally she does wake up still wanting to breastfeed. I think she does it more for comfort than hunger, so I am trying to only feed her until she falls back to sleep for a long time to fill her stomach. I'm trying to slowly wean her off nightfeeds completely and do leave her to cry sometimes when she ultimately falls back to sleep. I figure we'll get there eventually, even though it's slower than many other children. I think you should try giving them a late night bottle for now, and then ultimately you need to stop even that. The other option is why not have them sleep in separate rooms? Do this at least for a while until they get used to sleeping through the night and then put them back together if need be, but at least they're not waking each other up. Slowly I think this will help maintain a routine.

Why are you so freaked out about the balcony situation? As long as you don't put any chairs outside then the walls are high. Plus, I've heard you can get balcony locks but I don't really know the details. I have a 4 and a half year old and an eight month old and I've never worried about this (I'm on a high level!). Alternatively, I've seen a 3-bed in Tower F that doesn't have a balcony, so maybe you should try that tower? I'm not sure about the other towers. Personally I need my balcony for the washing :D

I don't know of any schools around 20 k :( the schools I know of for fs1 and fs2 are all 30 k plus unless u find a nursery cheaper? I agree this may be the best option for you. Many nurseries offer KG1, and then you can waitlist your child for KG2/FS2 for 2013 which gives you more chance of getting your children into the school of your choice (although waitlist now!!). Plus nurseries are significantly cheaper and have smaller class sizes, so if your child hasn't been at nursery before then this may be a good adjustment step for him before he goes to "the big school". What you reading/hearing about schools being full is true, most schools have now offered their places for next year and are no longer accepting new children. I kept my daughter at nursery for KG1 and it has been a good decision for us, she'll be going to FS2 in September.

Try this maid agency: Barjeel - 04 2243252 and ask to speak to Mrs. Ashraf. They used to provide me with the same maid, either 5 days a week for 8 hours or 6 days a week for 8 hours. All the maids are legal, plus if u get a maid you don't like then you can ask her to send another lady. They're the only maid agency in Dubai that I found would give me a monthly rate instead of an hourly rate. I used them continuously for abt 18 months, and then got my own live-in maid and stopped using them. Then used them again for two months last year when I was between maids. I paid 2500 dhs per month. I mentioned this on another thread and many ladies asked me for the details of the company. I was away over the weekend and didn't get a chance to reply, and now that thread has been removed so I apologise for not responding. I hope this helps and good luck!!

I use viber and have never had any issues. Although it only seems to work in wifi, so I'm not sure where you're trying to use it. I did have a friend that struggled with it for a while as it wouldn't work, and I'm not exactly sure of the details but she said that you have to download it over a Du internet connection, not Etisalat as Etisalat block it (it may possibly be that it only works with Du wifi as well). I'm not sure if that's true or not, but it seemed to sort out her issue.

Yes me, I use the West Heights one. All in all it's a nice gym with a good range of facilities. The only drawback is that there aren't enough cardio machines (particularly treadmills and cross trainers) so you do have to wait a while, and then run to grab a machine if you see that its free. If you're able to use the gym in the day (I go in the evening when it's busiest) then I think it would be really enjoyable.

There's a place in the back by Spinneys opening call "Feet Lounge"...hmmm Feet something! Can't remember!!! I was trying to peer over the signage :D So it looks like us ladies may get a "spa" type place!! Why the men need two "saloons" (got it right this time!!), and we have nothing so far is beyond me!

I think different towers have different occupancies. Tower H is definitely near 100%, and I would think the same for the other towers that were established earlier on (if not near the 90% mark). Towers C, E, and F are emptier - maybe around 70-80%? Then you have tower G which remains unoccupied. I went househunting with a friend a few weeks ago, and most of the apartments she was being shown were in Tower C, E and F. She was looking for a 3-bed tho. Tower H was pretty much unavailable, and the odd few that came on the market were literally snapped up in days. Exec Towers are in high demand and the rents have gone up, but they remain significantly cheaper than Downtown/Old town and easier access than some of the other BB towers. Anyways, that was me just guessing...I may be way off! Oh and all the new roads are now open...just had a look from the balcony. Altho defo chaos at the roundabout next to the metro - lots of beeping of horns!

So far it all looks exactly the same :-( Plus the road that runs directly in front of ET past the sales centre doesn't have road markings and parts of the pavement are still missing. Well it is 7.30... Ok so the official road to Downtown is now open. Looks like the exit to SZR is closed, altho I can't quite see it from the window. But yay that I can drive to Dubai Mall tonight without paying Salik or ruining my car :D
