I would never do a big shop from Spinneys, you're right its much more expensive than go to Carrefour or the Union Coop. Having said that there are a few things that make me go to Spinneys: 1. The bakery is the best of all supermarkets in my opinion 2. There is never a mad rush for the cashiers...Carrefour is generally a nightmare especially if you're only looking for a couple of things 3. Convenient location for me as there is one right under my building, so I'm always there for the old pint of milk, etc

Snow White we have been fooled...well I have at least!!! I'm failing to find the "recovery" part in recovery week!!! I was thinking this week would be something along the lines of Cardio Recovery, some intense stretches, some yoga type moves, etc...IT'S NOT!!!! I sent a message to my brother, and his response was "well did you really think any of the Insanity workouts were going to be easy?"....sigh... Actually, it isn't that bad, it's a good session, I really enjoy it and there are lots of new moves. But, it's pretty intense. You don't get the physical exhaustion at the end, but you work your muscles like crazy. There are two moves towards the end...hip flexor burners and shoulder flexor burners (or something like that)...OMG! I was pretty sure Shaun T was trying to dislocate my shoulders! Your muslces burn! I coudn't get through them all the way without putting my arms down. So I thought I would warn you...recovery week is not a walk in the park :-( I did my third session last night and I could pretty much do it all without breaking (except the hip/shoulder burners) but I was sweating like crazy by the end of it. Well done on getting all the way through Cardio Recovery! Even in the last week I still struggled with the lunges/squats and couldn't hold them all the way through so I had to relax for a couple of seconds and then go again. I have heard Insanity Asylum is crazy! What I like about Insanity is that you don't need any equipment, I think for Asylum and PX90 you do which is why I'm reluctant to try them. I don't think I'm up for Asylum at all lol but maybe PX90 if the required equipment isn't too much.

I bought some yesterday from WH Smiths - 12 pieces of different coloured card for 30 dhs. I actually bought a pack of white card, and they had black card as well. I was using mine to make a card for somebody. I put some photos together as a collage and then printed it on a normal printer - came out perfect.

Is it ok if I'm just a little bit jealous here?!?? I'm the woman that has space in the tv cabinet for a 50" tv yet DH decided that 32" is more than enough... Oh and once I left him in the mall for 30 minutes to buy shoes and he came back with a pair of hideous blue checkered shoes that he thought was a great deal because they were Quiksilver and reduced to less than half the price!!! I'm happy to trade for the 800dhs rubbish bin!!! Lol just for a few days, then I'm sure I would want my gadget hating husband back!!!

This has happened to me...hmmm with both kids I should say...OMG that sounds terrible and makes me sound like the worst mother ever. In both instances it was a complete accident, kids can just surprise you sometimes. Anyways. like you, they both just cried for a couple of minutes and then were completely fine. I wouldn't worry at all. I don't know how people can be so casual about a baby falling off the bed! Sorry... I can't say that it is something that I am proud of, but accidents do happen. I take all care to ensure that my kids are safe and well looked after, but its difficult when they start crawling and you turn away for a second or get distracted...I'm not perfect! I'm actually really worried about things such as this, whereas my husband, would happily leave the kids at home for a second and run down to his car (don't worry this has never happened as there is now way I would let him). I always imagine the worst. But yes, I admit I that I don't rush off to the doctor for every little thing and trust my own judgement. Obviously I keep a close eye on them afterwards and I do believe that kids are a lot tougher than we think. Maybe I am stupid, but I was trying to give OP reassurance that things like this do happen and she shouldn't feel too guilty.

I'm so glad to hear you say that you can't get through the Level 2 Drills! Haha not because I'm glad you can't get through them, but because I have just finished month 1 and still can't get through them. I found slowing down just makes them harder. I can't get thru the combination of level 2 drills, ski abs and then ins and outs either on the Plyo CD which is what I had last night. I do figure that as we are working to complete exhaustion then we must be getting the maximum benefit right? Since starting this program my upper arms and thighs feel like rocks when I flex them - they were all flab 28 days ago!!! I'm so glad that today is my rest day and then next week is recovery week. I am exhausted, my body is so physically tired! Yeah I went down 1.5kgs but this morning was up 0.5kg...lol I'm blaming it on my period! I did, however, take all of my measurements two days ago so like you that will be my main focus. Plus remember you have already gone down a dress size! I commented on your other post about doing this again once you finish. That's exactly how I feel. I stil have my love/hate relationship, but I can't imagine not pushing myself every night like I have done the last 28 days! I definitely think a second round will be in order after a well-deserved break!

I'm about 10 days behind SEY83 but agree with everything she says - its real hardcore stuff but so effective - the sessions are relatively short (30 to 40 mins - including the warm up/stretching and cool down so really you are only going like a bat out of **** for about 20/25 mins max) - well at least that's the case with Month 1 - neither of us have any idea what is install in Month 2 except that it is even more "insane"! My advice is go for it - the boxset is expensive but in my view it was worth it - as SYE83 has mentioned mine came from Amazon in the UK - I'm not sure how the prices compare to getting it direct from Beachbody.com (US). I couldn't find it anywhere in Dubai though. Let us know if you decide to join us - I am likely to start the programme again after a month or two of finishing this one - it is oddly addictive! Snow White your last sentence is exactly what I have been thinking. I'm already wondering how I will fill my time after I finish the program, and I am definitely thinking that I will want to repeat it. I finished month 1 last night! Plus I read some reviews of month 2, and I have to be honest and tell you that I'm scared...

My friend had two housemaids for quite a while. She told me that she went through a lot of issues in order to be able to sponsor both as maids, asa immigration told her that expats can only sponsor one maid. She had to plead her case and eventually got approval. I think it depends on your luck on the day, but once you get approval once there is no problem with renewing visas I think.

Ermmm whoops. I've just been boiling the kettle and using boiled cooled tap water, I didn't realize I was supposed to use bottled water, since boiling kills off any nasty germs. Is it unsafe to do so? Should I buy a separate kettle for preparing her formula? I think you're fine TDB don't worry. The tap water is safe to drink as advised by the authorities and you are boiling it. This is exactly how you are advised to prepare water in the UK. When i used to use bottled water I wouldn't boil it, or if I did it was only when my baby was very young and then I stopped. My midwife in the UK advised that bottled water didn't need to be boiled. i know not everyone agrees with that and some peole are stricter but I have never had any issues. edited by SEY83 on 29/01/2013

I made it through! Shockingly my energey levels were actually really good, except that I got bad stitch a couple of times...something that I haven't experienced yet...but I pushed through! It was probably my best round of Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs yet, even though it was the least motivated that I have been so far. So happy I didn't cave... I take my leads from my brothers that have both done it as well, but you're right its really nice to have somebody to compare notes with. It makes it all that bit easier. My latest piece of information from my brother when asaked how much haarder month 2 is? His reply: "It's a bit of a shock to they system, kind of like when you start month 1"...seriously?!?!?! I'm worried now!!! edited by SEY83 on 29/01/2013

You're absolutely right Daza, we are too critical of one another. Plus I think people forget that one shoe doesn't fit everyone. What's best for one family is different for another. I think at the end of the day its about finding the right balance, and making sure that you are happy with whatever choices that you make. We brought our children into the world, not just for the sake of having children - it is only you that knows what is best for them. Lol @ the lady who wrote for a magazine...at least she got her more...she got the mani and pedi and then wrote about it! I definitely do not think that SAHM sit at home having manis and pedis all day!! It's hard work, and kids can be stressful. I think we all deserve a break i order to maintain our sanity! For me my rather long break is work, for others its the gym, yoga, etc.

Hi Wiesie, Check out the thread between Snow White and myself: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic197500-for-sey83--insanity.aspx I know that Snow White recently purchased Insanity from Amazon and had it delivered. I got mine from my brother who had purchased it in the UK. We regularly update the thread with our progress. Bottom line is that the program is incredibly tough and intense, but the results are fantastic. I'm just about to complete month 1 and go into the recovery week. My friend downloaded the workouts online. You could also buy a used copy and shop and ship as its a pricey box set. I have no idea if it's sold in Dubai to be honest.

Yes - I have absolutely no concerns about this nursery at all. I put my eldest daughter there for 2 years. To be honest I didn't tour nurseries so I have nothing to compare it to, but I knew multiple people who had their children there and they were all very happy, plus the location was very convenient for me. It's not a fancy nursery, pretty basic really, but the teachers are fantastic. They also refurbish it every few years, so ys it has been there for over 20 yeaars, but it isn't old (it's a converted villa). My daughter was very happy there and I think she developed immensely - I had no issues at all. They also give Arabic or French and Islamic Studies in KG1 which was a huge bonus as far as i was concerned. I will be registering my other daughter to start in September.

Great post! I think all working moms worry that maybe what they're doing isn't in the best interests of their children, I know that i do everyday. I worry that I am selfish, that they will resent me, etc. However, I also know that there are many benefits to me working. I think the last point sums it up perfectly for me: Don't you worry you're missing out? Every day. But then my son runs into my arms when I pick him up from school and climbs into my bed in the morning to tell me I'm the "best mommy ever," and I know it's going to be ok. That's exactly how I feel. I see how my kids look at me, I know how they feel about me, they're 100% my entire world. I devote every other minute of the day to them. My sacrifice is I don't get lots of "me" time...no hobbies, no manis/pedis, no hanging out with my friends without the kids. If I'm going out, they're coming with me, and if people can't understand that then that's something I have to live with. It's tough whether you work or whether you don't. I have huge amounts of respects for SAHMs, I actuaally think their job is harder than mine. Thanks for posting frenchbird!

sounds like he didn't want a paper trace and tricked her into getting married (for what? not sure). My guess is he is somewhat religious and doesn't want to live in sin? This way he sees himself as having done the right thing in the eyes of God...some people forget about the basic morals that need to come with religion.

My guess is that this means that she had an islamic marriage, which basically means that she and her husband plus two witnesses went to see a Sheikh that married them. For most Muslims, when you get married you do both the islamic marriage, but also the legal marriage and registration as well. There are numerous cases of couples that just marry religously which is basically so that they can have a physical relationship without sinning - most of these types of "marriages" end in disaster. I'm not really sure how she should end the marriage. What should happen is her husband tells her she is divorced "taliqa" 3 times, each time in different circumstances (so he cana't just say it three times in a row). This then divorces them. I am no religious expert, so please do more research and hopefully others here can help you. If she wants to divorce him, then my guess is that she should go and see a Sheikh, but I doubt she will get out of it that easily as the Sheikh will try to reconcile them. Honestly, if she isn't religious and her marriage isn't legally registered, then can't she just walk away?

Snow White that's fantastic! Your results are great, especially the push-up type exercises. It's like they say: "no pain no gain"...we have suffered a lot but are definitely seeing the results which makes it worth it! Also the fact that you have lost a dress size is amazing! It will take a lot for me to lose a dress size. I have gained around 15 kgs since I got married, but I have only gone up one dress size...my body adds weight everywhere, some people say I'm lucky, but honestly I would love to see things like dress sizes and scale number decrease! Having said that, last night I tried again a couple of dresses that I bought three weeks ago and there is a HUGE difference in the fit :) I didn't take a before photo...hahaha I never want to remember what I look liked before! I do regret not taking all of my measurements though, because I would like to know how many inches I have lost. I keep saying I will do it tonight and it just never happens. Tonight I have Pure Cardio and Cardio Abs...considering I slept for 3 hours last night, I have been at work all day and I have an hour and a half of school meetings later...I can't think of anything worse!! Two more workouts until recovery week! I am dreading month 2 though, I have heard it intensifies big time!

Emur - I have just sent you an email so you can remove your email address. Thank you so much! LuLee - I will check out Bustan Centre, I'm not sure I know where it is, but I'm sure I will find it, it sounds exactly like what I am looking for. Thanks Chi2dxb - I will check out the other branches and see if they have more sizes. My guess is both Festival Centre and Marina Mall probably have less traffic so I am more likely to find my size! Thank you everyone else for the suggestion of tailors in Satwa. I will make note of everywhere that you have recommended if not for this, but definitely for the future. My mom wants to have a small bolero made to match her dress, so I certainly know that I will need a tailor for that at least.

Thanks all so much for the suggestions! Amelia/Emur - I have considered getting one made at Satwa, I've just never ever done that before! Do you have a specific shop that you use and can guarantee would make a well-made dress? Usually I wouldn't be so picky, but it's my brother's occasion and so I want something special. Ideally I would love to just be able to find a readymade one, but I'm definitely willing to consider getting one made. I have time - the party is on the 21st Feb. Mushypeas - I tried the Dubai Mall branch a few days ago, and you're right they have fantastic dresses. I actually really liked one, but it was sale period so sizes were very limited. Do you know if they have another branch? I should have asked! Jasmine57 - thank you for the offer. Unfortunately, the two colours I have ruled out are white and black. I might go for black if I don't have any other options, but definitely not white...I know it's an engagement party but I would feel weird wearing white!!

My neighbours have a bike and quad bike parked outside of their apartment. I can't tell you how much me and my husband hate it. It clutters up the shared area, takes space and looks ugly. I get that storage is limited, but its the same for all of us. I only buy what I know I can store and would never buy an oversized bike. I know a pushchair is different, but honestly collapsing and opening a pushchair takes about 2 seconds to do and you can easily fit it under a bed or something - mine is in the laundry room along with my daaughter's bike and scooter.

There is definitely something wrong if your sister isn't losing inches or weight and she is training 4 days a week. Some ladies may have read on another thread that I am currently doing a 63-day home DVD fitness program called Insanity. You have to work out for 6 days a week and it's definitely not for the faint hearted. The sessions are definitely tough and not for everyone. Anyways, my point is that I am now on day 25 and even though I haven't seen a huge weight loss (1kg!) I have lost inches all over my body. The difference is huge, and I have received numerous compliments about how much better and thinner I look over the last few days. Your sister has been working out for significantly longer than I have. Maybe your sister should go and see a doctor? Perhaps she has a thyroid issue or something which slows down her metabolism?

I doubt it makes a difference. The vaccine given at the government clinic and at provate clinics is the same. Plus the government clinic makes you pay 200 dhs for the Chicken pox vaccine - it's the only vaccine that isn't free. A side note, but just so you know, private clinics give additional vaccinations to the government, such as Rota virus (which I missed because I didn't realise that they didn't give at govt clinic and when I found out DD2 was too old for it) and Hep A + Hep A booster. If you want these then you have to pay for them privately.

Don't know if this will help you but early last year I had to put together a list of what it would cost to set up a 3 bedroom apartment for 2 adults and 1 teenager - right down to the potato peeler. I priced items mostly at Ikea with a few items that I wanted better quality from Crate and Barrel and some similar stores. Anyway the total cost came to AED175000. It can't be that high, surely? I live in a 3-bedroom apartment and though I didn't furnish it all at once, mentally calculating what we spent on each room, it must have been much less than that for me. But who knows, I guess these expenses just creep up. Most of my furniture is from Home Centre, Ikea, etc.

We are 2 adults and one 8 year old and a small dog and a few chickens running around and spend about 5500/- per month on running our home: groceries, cleaning products, fuel, electricity, Internet connections, phones, maid salary etc plus extra for school fees etc. I try to cut down but find it impossible. Any hints on cutting groceries would be appreciated. We eat our eggs and try to eat our own chickens when possible. We rarely go out - movies, restaurants etc. Wow you manage to only spend 5,500 per month? That's incredible! Maid salary alone is around 1,000 mark give or take depending on how you pay her, and for us our DEWA and Empower come up to another 1,000 dhs as well. I won't comment on how much my family spend because I feel like we're ridiculously extravagent now! We do save most of my salary, but groceries alone for us are about 5,000 per month. We're 2 adults, 2 children, maid plus I now have my mother-in-law living with me as well.

I just ordered a salad which I had delivered to my office. I got it, paid and then when I opened it at my desk I saw that the lettuce was all brown, soggy and seemed very aged. I called them back to return it and send a new one. Me: Hi, I just ordered a salad, but the lettuce is brown and seems very old. Lady: No madam, that's just the sauce, sometimes it makes the lettuce go brown. Me: Erm no, firstly the sauce is on the side, and secondly I know what aged lettuce looks like Lady: Are you sure madam? Really it's just the sauce Me: Believe me this is old lettuce I have ordered from you a million times and I know what fresh lettuce looks like!

Lol I loosely can state that I have lost 1kg...lol I seem to go up and down my 1kg all the time! But, I buckled up the belt around my waist by one extra notch yesterday and it was still relatively loose...so I'm sure I am losing inches and I can feel bigger muscles. My friend told me that my arms look way more toned so I'm happy! That is tough about mixing up your schedule! I would say don't push beyond your limits though and see how it goes. Today is my 3rd rest day, I'm so proud of myself that I have done 3 weeks of this. Here is an outline of my progress so far as I have moved into a new phase physically. So the first few days were sheer agony as my muscles were aching everyday - they just weren't used to the intensity and frequency of the sessions. So then I got over the inital muscle aching and last week was great, I wasn't feeling nauseaus after working out anymore and I was recovering quickly. It was good. Now I would say after the last two or three work outs, and in particular last night's plyo session, my muscles are reaching exhaustion. Yesterday I was so tired doing plyo...especially the last set where you do level 1 drills, ski abs and then ins and outs. I probably stopped more than I have stopped in previous plyo sessions, but my muscles weren't allowing me to push any further! Having said that, I am now sweating way more than i did in the first week. i have always said that I'm not a big sweater but I now have drops of sweat dripping off me (excuse the image!!). I now understand why the recovery week is so important as today I feel stifff :( . Before I was wondering what the point was, in that my body was stronger and didn't think I would need it....I so need it! One more week to go and I am done with month 1. Definitely still loving it...still hating it! What have you got tonight? What day are you on?

Thanks to all. I will try union co-op next when I am there. SEY, it's interesting the one my mum used didn't have teeth, seems to be a newer version. Ayzzy, I used a knife too but would end up slicing off the tops or making slits, I felt the corer speeds things up. You can buy them without teeth...in fact i think most of the ones that you find don't have teeth. I actually thought as I posted it that the teeth make sense, i should get one like that!

I think you get it from the RTA test centres. It's basically the same test that cars over 3 years old have to have before you can renew their registration. I think it's quite common that buyers ask for this as it is official proof that nothing major is wrong with the car.

I recommend that you list it on Dubizzle. I think Dubizzle is probably the most common place that people search for second-hand cars, plus you will get a much better rate for your car than from a dealer. It's usually quick, I received numerous calls for my car when I sold it last year - I had people calling within 3 minutes of me posting the ad!

You can buy them from any supermarket in the same section where you get other kitchen utensils. If the below is what you're looking for then it's called a courgette corer (or zucchini corer). http://www.nutmegpeddlers.com/fullView.asp?sf=y&nb=1&id=263427811&img=http://images.marketplaceadvisor.channeladvisor.com/hi/75/74871/790a.jpg

You're doing so well yourself! I'm proud of us :D LOL @ not wanting to puke anymore...I know exactly what you mean by that! Oh and I had to add my .5 to the globe jumps...I don't want my two jumps to go completely unaccounted for! I still have to stop many times through Pure Cardio in particular, but I don't stress about it all because I feel that I push myself much harder now when I do each exercise, so I am actually probably more exhausted than two weeks ago. It's so nice to not have my muscles ache the next day now. I know what you mean about missing working out during the rest day...that's how I felt. Then when I had the fit test I actually voluntarily did cardio abs as well because I wanted to push myself harder! I think it is important to get the rest day in though else we will exhaust our bodies which cant be good in the long term. I know I have lost inches, and I know in theory that is more important...I just wish the scales would drop a little bit!

It's not a cheap restaurant. The burgers are around the 55Dhs mark, the "specialities" around 90 dhs, the salads around 70dhs. I'm actually not sure what the prices of the cheesecake are though because we never got around to ordering them! However, I think you can make it cost effective by ordering one meal between two people. I know that sounds weird, but the portions really are that big. My daughter's kids meal of chicken strips was enough for an adult! The salads are enormous! If you go before 5pm (any day of the week) then they have lunch time portions of some of the meals that are cheaper. Also the cheesecake slices are massive...MASSIVE! Between 7 people there is no way each person would eat one slice. I would say order 3 or 4, which is more than enough.

Yes!!!! This is my favourite restaurant at the moment. I have now dined there twice and we all thought the food was great. Although, word of warning...the portions are HUGE! So if you're thinking about having a meal and then cheesecake for dessert then you have no chance. Twice we have been so stuffed by the food that we couldn't try the cheesecake, so we have decided that next time we will go for cheesecake and coffee only. We also found that the queuing times in MOE were much more decent than Dubai Mall. We went at Friday lunchtime with 7 of us and only had to wait for a table for 10 minutes. In Dubai Mall we had to wait for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

These are my fit test results: Switch kicks - from 90 to 110 Power jacks - 50 to 47 Power knees - 62 to 78 Power jumps - 23 to 26 Globe jumps - 4 to 7.5 Suicide jumps - 11 to 12 Push-up jacks - 8 to 12 Low plank oblique - 20 to 30 I was thrilled that most of them have gone up - except power jacks! My guess on that one is I either counted wrong the first time or the fact that I was already half decent at squats so I could get a lot in. Honestly, I have never seen muscle build up so quickly on my body. I just wish the scaales would shift a bit!!! My push-ups still need a lot of work, but I guess the whole point is to see improvement right? How is it going for you? Did you hate Pure Cardio as much as I do? I had to do it last night along with Cardio Abs and I still hate it :( I also had a bad diet weekend so I feel guilty about that..back on track this week!

It doesn't confuse them. It's not said in place of the name, more at certain times. Ie ok, mummy (in the baby like voice), put your shoes on But then they'll be called their name most of the time. Same as calling them pumpkin, they don't grow up thinking they're a pumpkin :D But isnt your Mummy your Mother? i wouldnt call my children Mummy as i am their Mummy Pumpkin i understand :-) They definitely don't get confused. Like AmyAus82 said, its used in replacement of "darling", "pumpkin", "sweetie". They very much know what you refer to, as the tone is different. It's a hard one to get your head around I think, without speaking the language, because it is peculiar. Plus, when I speak to my kids in English I don't do it.
