I am probably going to add a major spanner in the works here but whilst I find it absolutely abhorrent some expats go way beyond the meaning of humanity regarding certain nationalities, I do feel very strongly about living in a country, where a certain nationality who are employed here as labourers (and apparently, experts in their field of vocation) cannot muster the common sense to do a job - quite simple and easily, properly and charge us an absolute fortune - they renegade on their work, so more of the same are brought in to 'try' and 'hope' for rectification purposes. There are two sides and some nationalities do themselves no favours!

We have several of both in the household - maid and mine is an iPhone 5 and girls, a Samsung S4 each. Whatever you do, please buy from a reputable source. My DD bought with her own Christmas money the Samsung S4 and found just days later it did not work or charge after being OK - the 'motherboard' broke and has just cost me a further 300 to get fixed. This was purchased from Allshop.com. edited by SJ1968 on 25/01/2014

Vjen - this is illegal as maids, or cooks, in any capacity need to be sponsored by yourselves or legitimate company. The average range is AED35-AED40, via an agency, per hour in my experience.

Noooo. The general rule is for the entire middle east - never pay anything and expect to claim it back. Once it's spent, your landlord has no interest whatsoever in giving you the money. Thanks - take it he will keep the AED30K deposit also :-(

Never thought I would have to do this but how easy is it to cancel a villa contract before end of one year? We hold a standard contract - no 'extra clauses'. Thinking perhaps if we were to find new tenants for the landlord, this might be an option to broach to him? Thanks

Many thanks Polly but I would prefer someone who can recommend from here - long shot, I know, from the time frame. I noticed on another similar thread, poster [b'>imorgan[/b'> husband is a GCSE Maths tutor - perhaps she may pick up this.

I live in the Al Quoz area three puppies have been living under a building I went to feed them tonight and the chap living on the building site has caught them for me. They are at risk of being run over, and kids have been throwing things at them. I am not a dog person and can't keep them can anyone point me in the direction of somewhere they can go they are very cute and I am sure would be lovely pets. I am getting panicky as we are not allowed dogs. At the present time they are in my cat pen. Thanks for looking. I was given a number of a lady but she was only interested in taking their picture and possibly sometime in the future taking them - probably when it was too late. Please help If you are on Facebook please post an Immediate thread to K9 Friends - they maybe able to help.

Did you switch to a 'buy to let' mortgage? If not, this is perhaps why the mortgage company is now asking questions? Are you reaching the end of a fixed term or anything like that? How do the mortgage people contact you, do they write to you at the UK tenanted address or a separate address if it's a buy to let? Maybe they've been sending letters and not received any replies? Just thoughts! No fixed mortgage never changed to Buy To Let. It was an option never allowed I believe. We have.owned the property since 2007 and never any issues per se. Any letters have been sent to his parents in UK (so they know we live abroad) so I suppose just to await that letter through the door as to what it is about!! edited by SJ1968 on 11/01/2014

Request an etisalat technician to come to your house. They can fix it. The router is most probably not enabling additional connections and the settings needs to be corrected. Will do - many thanks

Oh Bless You SJ1968 and to you Singarosa for not giving up. I was sitting here in Canada not able to physically to do anything other than send up a few prayers and bombard you both with positive energy...... As to the other suggestion about spreading the word and taking action to reduce the stray population , it is like a little leak that over time will turn into a flood....All it takes is for as many of us to take action not just shake our heads and move on. If you see a stray in a situation that you can help SNR ,take the time effort and yes possibly a small donation. Every little bit helps ,it starts with helping the first one. Eta please let us know how the poor mite is doing. edited by Nomad on 08/01/2014 Great news! Vet has just called me to say she approx 2 moths old - no suspected fractures, 'emptying' herself well but may have a spinal cord infection from a fall or similar. Quite a chubby little thing by all accounts. Now settling in for a warm night on antibiotics and awaiting an X-ray to confirm in the morning!! Good news to the the end of the evening. You are the most wonderful person ever. I really want to meet you and give you a big huge hug. I can't thank you enough. Thank you thank you thank you. I'm so glad it turned out ok. I wish I could have done more. Im literally crying from joy. I was so worried and I'm so glad this evening ended well. Hope the kitten gets well soon. Omg so happy. Please keep us updated xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Singorosa - you are the one that saved her - without you, she would not be receiving the care now if you had not seen her. We have named her Bella and will keep you updated. We shall meet for a coffee and hug :-) edited by SJ1968 on 08/01/2014

Singerosa How long can you stay at the Mall? Try scooping the kitten up gently and placing it in a secure area of the car - I will see what I can do. Can you please give me your mobile, off line, [email protected] I sent you an e-mail Received and spoken - did you receive my response a few moments ago?

So sorry to hear this Celesti. They both deserve each other, what horrible people! Poor you and your child. Refuse to give him a divorce! Thjey'll both be forced to leave the UAE knowing they can't have a child out of wedlock here. Yes, string things out and make them both sweat. I bet he'll leave her when things get difficult for him. Most definitely - 'Revenge' is a dish best served cold! edited by SJ1968 on 08/01/2014

i haven't heard anything back from admin re: costs for this. a real shame as it would be perfect for someone here...part time sales role, working from home. does anyone have any recommendations for where else this could be advertised? Hi Kelly I spoke to someone this morning for you who advertised on EW sometime ago (how I got to know EW through them) and they paid I believe, not a given exact amount, but around the AED1000ish + mark. You could try Dubizzle or Expatriates.com (latter does not have a good reputation) but be prepared to receive CVs that may 'not quite match' (ie timewasters) to what you are seeking. Good luck!

Hi SJ I think recruitment needs to be a mainland DED license (some activities are definetely not allowed in free zones) but I would imagine you can get a professional license not a commercial license so you need a local service agent not a sponsor (difference is they don't own 51% of your company). Check with the free zones directly they'll tell you straight away if you can set up in them. There's a DED office in Dubai Mall, I'm going to try & get some answers there tomorrow. BTW sponsors can range anywhere between 10-20,000 dhs per year. TBH with you I've found out so much info about it all I'm thinking about setting up a business set up consultancy. I know about as much as all the other "experts" in the field. Good luck! x Many thanks Barmcake - it is most certainly a minefield when dealing in areas you have no knowledge of. Good on you for doing the research! Cannot see why other postings have been deleted - some with business acumen and ideas, on a forum for women, need the empowerment which equals help! I will look at other areas tomorrow and discretely contact a consultancy on the best way forward. Good luck and best wishes if you do set up - you most certainly have the right attitude!!

I think if you buy one here, I am sure it doesn't have FaceTime, which is Apple's own version of Skype. But that's about it You can buy the versions here: UAE issued without Facetime and the US issued with FaceTime. I have two iPads in the house, both purchased in Dubai! one with FaceTime and one without. I have Skype on both iPads! both loaded here in Dubai. Goodness if I had only known about Skype could be loaded here but seemed to be blocking. DH uses Alias on his which registers you as in UK or USA on ISP address.

Hello, today whilst driving between Dubai and Al Ain I was harrassed by someone in another car - basically he kept his car as close to mine as possible, no matter the speed I was going. It was annoying at first, and then I got scared, as he just wouldn't let up. Finally I slowed right down and went into the 'slow lane', where I stayed behind a truck until the car was out of sight (or so I thought). It started up again, and so I took out my phone and took a photo of his car and license plate. Not sure if he saw or not, but shortly after he pulled over to the side of the road and I continued driving. It sounds like not much, writing it down, but it shook me up, and I'm wondering what I maybe could have done to stop it sooner? Thanks in advance. Hi Missyalain, So sorry to hear this :-( You must have been shaken..... No, you did everything correctly and absolutely in a calm and controlled manner. Did this driver seem to be actually following you? Regardless, and IMHO, I would report.. Hugs and the main scenario is - you are safe!

Big blanket on the beach, a shwarma picnic as the sun goes down over the Burj al Arab, and a big flask of something hot and yummy. :) Sorry to hijack but DH birthday next week and TB's idea sounds just the ticket :-)

Hi WG I purchased mine in the UK and the kids, in Dubai. No problems from my side however, at the time, DDs wanted Skype loaded and could not from blocking. It may have changed now but they managed to install upon return to home country a few months later. Could not live without mine :-)

Unfortunately, as all the posts here indicate - it is part of the way of living here. When I first arrived, I was shocked coming from a European country, but now used to daily way of life living in another culture outside of my own.
