Chizz we looked at Sara Tower last night, opposite the Four Seasons. Apparently the building's been finished for a few years but they've just refurbished it - all the gym equipment was still in plastic! They were furnished, but they might be willing to take out the furniture to get some tenants!! I think (not 100% sure) the 2 br was 12,000 (3 br was 17,000 and I LOVED IT, but way out of our price range...)

Noticed a bunch of persian carpet shops driving back from the souq last night, on Al Asmakh Street, which runs parallel to Grand Hamad Street. I'm not very good at directions, but if you google Qatar Royal Hotel, it's that street...

Sushi Minto on Salwa Rd have a sign up saying QR 109 for Iftar buffet 6-9, but I don't know that it would be any different from their usual offer on Sunday/Monday

@Krasch have you had gel on your feet before? I'm curious as I heard that it's really difficult to get it off your feet. I've had gel mani's before, but wasn't impressed with having to soak them in acetone to get it off - it felt like it removed my fingerprints for a few days!

Some friends of mine did a 7 day cruise with Royal Caribbean last year on the Brilliance of the Seas and loved it. They have a 17 DS and he had a great time, although I'm not sure how it would be for younger kids.

Sorry to hijack, but has anyone got any feedback on Al Emadi or Al Shallal Gardens in Al Waab? They were the best of a bad bunch I saw yesterday...

Hi Chizz, Ramadan issue aside, one thing I've found makes all the difference is the company's HR department. Does your DH work for a fairly large company with a number of employees already in Doha? If so, they will probably have a (relatively) efficient process for getting RPs. My DH on the other hand, was his company's the first sponsored employee in Doha and it took 14 months to get his RP, purely because HR in Abu Dhabi didn't have a clue what they were doing...

When I moved back to Australia from Tokyo at the age of 14, my school friends became my pen pals and I kept ALL their letters. Last year my parents moved house and it was hysterical sorting through hundreds of letters filled with teenage angst!! Email just isn't the same!

Just one thing to add as many of my friends don't realise it - it is a very long way from Sydney to Brisbane! It takes 13 hours to drive in one stretch... obviously as you are breaking it up it will be easier, but just wanted to make sure you are aware of the distance...

We really like the Cellar at the Oryx Rotana Hotel. It's not the cheapest, but they have a deal on Tuesdays for unlimited tapas and 3 glasses of wine for QR220/person. And then on to the Jazz Bar after...

It's actually the service that costs... I had a quote for a 5 year service in London and it was £400 - but only £50 or so for the battery

Novice I can't help you on the S&S side, but what do you need from Mothercare & when is your travel date? If it's small I can bring it over with me on the 11th (sorry not much room in the suitcase at the moment...)

Saw this on QPWN on Linkedin - "The American surf wear brand body glove is opening tomorrow at 10am at Villagio. It will be located between Zara and Mango near the canal. It will stock bikinis and other swimwear, adults and childrens clothing, wetsuits and other items. If your un familiar with the brand check out their website. www.bodyglove.com" Might be worth a look?

I wasn't a huge fan of Marrakech, as it was all a bit touristy... I much preferred the beach town of Essaouira, it's a 2.5 hour bus trip from Marrakech - quaint fishing village, great seafood, relaxed shopping. Check out: http://goafrica.about.com/od/moroccotopattractions/a/Essaouira.htm

I've often found the "friend" requests to be recruiters, essentially cold calling. I agree with Jill though, maybe double check you privacy settings...

Do you know where in Australia? The cost of living varies widely across states... I'm originally from Sydney but have lived in the UK for the past ten years, and the two things that strike me every time I go home are how expensive it is to eat out, and how expensive housing is. For example, a lunch for two, in the city, drinking only tap water, cost $100... Remember the exchange rate is now 1:1 with the US Dollar... Also a few years back I was in a pub in Double Bay and got no change from a $20 buying two beers - I wouldn't have expected Doha prices in Sydney pubs!! For housing, check out domain.com.au - rents have doubled in the time I've been away, particularly in easy commuting distance to the city, and are on par with London Zone 1/2 rents. House prices are crazy and interest rates even more so, as Australia was not affected by the global recession - my brother pays 7% on his mortgage, when I'm only paying 1% in the UK... Like anywhere, it really depends on where you live and what your lifestyle is like. There are lots of Aussies here who can probably give you more up-to-date info!

Thanks Dan Lou! Any excuse really to shop! I'm over next week though so will check out the prices properly - I may end up just leaving everything in Doha and buying more! I won't be working, at least to begin with, as I'm trying to finish my Masters by correspondence. It's likely to be mid-July by the time I actually move, then I need to find us a bigger place (not really loving the 1 bedroom flat in Mushereib), and then it will be Ramadan. I think I might need to set up an Aramex account...

After 14 months of commuting back & forth from the UK, my move is finally happening!! I've been sending stuff back with DH each time he comes home, and now it's getting down to the essentials - clothes!! I'm wondering whether or not to buy some summer clothes in the UK (while it's actually been warm!) to bring with me, or can I take the risk of just bringing what I already own, and topping up if needed in Doha. I know there are all the usual High Street shops in the malls, but I've never actually been into them in any of my trips!! How would you describe them as compared to in the UK or Australia? Similar ranges/availability? Sizes? Prices? TIA Tamie

Not to scare the OP but DH still doesn't have his RP after 11 months... He didn't have a problem getting apartment/electricity/rental car, the only slightly tricky part was getting his shipment released once it arrived, however there is always a way... Fingers crossed for next week...
