I still like Mango Tree, especially with Entertainer vouchers. Has anyone been to Pampano lately? I haven't been since the alcohol ban and just wondering if it's worth going...

The thing that helps me is to remember that the driver should be close to the middle of the road. I don't find the roundabouts too bad, as like Kimmc3 says you are too busy trying to avoid the idiots, and you are all going the same way - it's when you are on the backstreets that I find difficult!

The problem with international redirection is at this end - post here is terribly unreliable and we tell everyone not to send us anything, unless they don't mind if it never turns up - example: a friend ordered absentee postal ballots for the US elections in June last year, they turned up AFTER the election! Instead you could use a mail scanning/forwarding service - a quick google search shows uk post box dot com or my uk post dot com. We get everything forwarded to our parents, and they send it on to our Aramex account once there is a decent amount (QR41 per 500g) and scan anything urgent.

A long time ago now, but we stayed in Ruhpolding about 10 years ago. Skiing was decent, village was nice, and from memory we walked to the slopes.

Can't help there I'm afraid, but have you been to a Doha Mums coffee morning yet? Their New Arrivals coffee mornings are on every Sunday at Starbucks in Hyatt Plaza from 9:30-11:30 (children are welcome) :)

We get our mail forwarded to our parents, then once they have a decent amount they forward it to our Aramex account (do a search on here for more details). If anything urgent comes through (ie from letting agents) they just scan it and send it. I believe there's also a company that offers this service, if you like I will try and dig out the details. If you keep your Sky subscription, you can access Sky programs through SkyGo. However the internet speed here is quite variable and we haven't yet used it successfully. We do use BBC iPlayer and 4oD quite often. The other option for your parents would be a visa run. Our parents quite enjoyed seeing the rest of the Middle East for a weekend in the middle of their trips... Good luck with your move!

Also sometimes they will tell you there is nothing available as the villa is being renovated after people have moved out! It took a while but after insisting we didn't mind a state of disrepair (and keeping a fairly open mind) they would show us properties that weren't officially available. Oh one other thing - unless you have paid a deposit, nothing is secured. We thought we had taken an apartment and it turned out that someone else put a deposit on it while we were sorting out the cheque book! Luckily another one in the same building came up a week later...

There are a bunch of electronics shops near Souq Waqif (dhow roundabout, although the dhow is no longer there). If you take your Garmin to them, they will be able to point you in the right direction.

How old is your child? You are probably aware that there is a shortage of primary school places, and as Jill says you could be paying in excess of 60,000 for a place! EW has a guide to school fees - [url=http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/monthly_qatar_guide_school_fees_6129.aspx'>link[/url'>-

She has had a LOT of work done. I went to the same school as her and they had her year 12 photo next to her first Sports Illustrated cover in the school office - you would not know they are the same person. She apparently also had her bottom ribs removed to make her look thinner (North Shore rumour...)

Choice is pretty limited I'm afraid - Mothercare and H&M. I got most of mine Aramexed from Old Navy & Target in the US and Next in the UK. I've seen a few people selling maternity clothes on Buy It Sell It Swap It Qatar FB page recently so that might be worth a look.

Sorry I know I sound really negative all the time. BUT if you have a car seat you are happy with, then bring it with you. Car seats are not mandatory here so the choice available can be quite limited. I've also found with both Mothercare and M&P that when you come to buy things they don't actually have them in stock when you want them...

Don't worry it's not isolated at all, it's right by Al Waab which is a popular area. There are 2 Mirage compounds there, one is new but the other quite established. Doha is so small that you are only really 15 mins from anywhere anyway

There are roadworks everywhere in Doha! There is a huge project though between West Bay and the Pearl called the Lusail Expressway which is expected to take several years to complete. I'm not sure if its because of the construction quality or the dust, but buildings tend to age very quickly here. Most properties will be freshly painted etc before you move in. Y Village and AJV2 are both around a year old as an indication.

With kids that age, and that kind of budget, I would be looking for a villa in a family friendly compound such as Beverly Hills Al Rayyan, Al Messilah, Y village, or Al Jazi (Gardens in WB or village 2 in Gharaffa). If that was absolutely not an option I would choose the Pearl (however the roadworks will drive your hubby mad within a few weeks).

Welcome to Doha! Yes it is totally normal - we have all been through it! The first thing you need to do is get the number of a driver, if you are not driving, so that you have some mobility (If you search on here there are some recommendations). Next, have you met anyone yet? I went crazy only being able to talk to DH who had the "luxury" of going to work! There is the group that meets at Jones on Sundays, there is Doha Mums New Arrivals coffees if you have kids, and a number of other groups such as Tuesday Ladies Group and American Womens' Association, both of which have been mentioned on here in the last few days. Good luck settling in, it can definitely be a challenge, but it does get easier!

There is a TRU but stock is fairly hit & miss. They got a big shipment in last month for the run up to Christmas but who knows when the next one will be. In Doha, you have to buy things when you see them or risk missing out when you need them... There is a fairly big second hand market for kids toys through FB and Doha Mums classifieds though - so although it might take time to track one down, you'll be able to pick up a kiddie kitchen sooner or later. If you can choose where you live, you can choose to live in a compound if you like...? They are not all company specific... It would be best to get a school sorted first then choose an area to live based on that, as you really want to minimise the driving if you can. SG we miss you in Qatar too!

It generally takes time between signing the contract and going for fingerprinting etc. Once your hubby has his RP, he will need 6 months of bank statements before he can sponsor you and get a family visa. There are exceptions but you should be prepared that it will probably take this long. You can renew a visit visa for a further 30 days, if you search on here you should be able to find details. Also some airlines won't let you fly in on a one way ticket if you are getting a tourist visa/don't have your RP yet so definitely get a flexible return ticket. Also it's quite cool (for Qatar) at the moment so make sure to bring a jumper!

Yes - I have both and so does my son. You need to apply for Australian citizenship by descent before applying for her passport, and one of the questions on the form is does the applicant have citizenship of any other country. We were able to answer no, truthfully, as his British passport had not yet been issued.
