OK-I won't say Fida in Satwa! Try going down the back of one of the al Washia stores in the malls-they always have bling in the front and a small sewing section in the back. Thanks wuffles- What exactly is an "al Washia" store? :-)

I do not offer my maid any sick leave etc officially, paid or unpaid, but, I do treat her as part of our household. When someone is really sick, of course, you help them. When my maid was sick, I was there, helping her at the hospital. I know she appreciated my efforts. Of course, I did not deduct the few days she was sick from her small salary. If your maid is sick all the time, however, perhaps you should reconsider employing her. I'm just talking about a cold and a cough.

as she is leave in can you not just use judgement and offer as required...... personally wouldn't offer any as a set in stone but allow sick days when and if required..... Thanks. Do you feel they should be paid sick days or unpaid?

Hi we're going to the Dubai Little League trials today and there is normally a stall there selling equipment, we got a glove there last year and a bat, it's a Louisville Slugger and they had Wilson too. Not a huge selection but enough. Apparently the shop is near Trade Centre Roundabout but I can't remember what it's called, will try to find out today for you. For today's trial you had to be signed up already with DLL. Hope this helps Thanks!! If you cold let me know the store name, that would be awesome and a great help!!! Kids are signed up but there are no trials for T-Ball. Thanks so much!!! Have fun at the trials. :-)

I could never live here forever. Living in Dubai will take years off your life- like the toxins from cigarettes. Only, it does it through frustrating and stressing the heck out of you. Maybe you have reached your Dubai limit.... have you though about go back to your home country? Haha! I suppose that will happen to alot of us. ;-) Our 1 year anniversary here was late June- another year or two to go... Most of September was just a rough month... Although the 26th was a highlight - had my baby... :-)

I actually feel proud to say that I DO NOT feed my kids this stuff. There is a reason our bodies and children's bodies look different than they do from back in the 80's and before. And thats not to mention the other health issues that are present today...

AGREED! Malls on a friday are a true nightmare. Although my nightmare at MOE happened on a Sunday early afternoon. To make a long story short: I was 34 weeks pregnant (recently) a man followed me from one store to another. While at Tenzenis, he approached me, told me a story about how he's a med student, and GROPED my pregnant belly. It was a physical assault, the store clerks did nothing- i walked to find security- burst into tears and after waiting in security office for 3-4 hours while they viewed the footage- they lost him. To sum it all up: "DUBAI". You leave your home, you will be upset or inconvenienced, or perhaps worse. :-/

From Palmera 4, AR it takes 13-20 minutes to get to and from ASD. Unfortunately, recently Hessa St has been backed up in the morning- don't know why. If your after school activities don't begin right away, you'll have to figure out a place to go nearby in between, and not go home- too much of a pain.

Also, a new law requires you to have a registered Tenancy contract which also requires you to have the property "title deed" , in order to aquire a Visa for your Maid. We found this out as we began the process, and after having to wait for our landlord to come back from holiday, we now have to wait an additional 20-25 days to get this stupid peice of paper. By then, our maids temp visa will be expired and we will have to pay a daily fine. The joys of Dubai...

We rushed into our first maid and she only lasted 2 weeks! Honestly, I did not lay down the law like I should have (because this was our first experience-I was "green", and The whole thing was rushed. She ended up not being able to do things that she said she could- cook, read/follow recipes, understand and speak English clearly, etc. I learned quickly that "yes ma'am" didn't mean she understood anything I said, as she would end up doing the opposite!! Also, her "husband" would show up during the work day and I wouldn't even know it until I spotted him in her room! My advice- take your time, interview well and stay away from anyone with a boyfriend or a "husband". The marriage documents can be fake. It's so confusing and overwhelming, I know. Take your time to make the right choice. :-) Good luck!!!

I went to Mirdif City Center yesterday to check out the Babyshop sale. Seems like almost all baby stores had great sales going on! I went a little crazy! Still looking for nice, soft baby bath towels. Of course Baby shop had a ton of them, but the styles were cheezy. Still need a carseat mirror for rear-facing baby- Babyshop was sold out. And the only place that i could find nursing tank tops was Mamas & Papas.

Sydneygal- Can you tell me which video monitor you have I am thinking of purchasing one. Does it work well with these thick cement walls? Thanks! Glad I bought - video monitor....my favourite gadget by far. - bugaboo pram...still using it at 16 months....I find it super comfy for DS and easy to use - humidifier for bubs room....helped with snuffles and provided great white noise....we still use it - Ikea antilop high chair....so easy to clean and cheap as chips! Things I didn't use much - bumbo...DS didn't fit in it for long and never looked that comfortable - Pottery Barn playmat...my DS found it boring even a a young age and I spent more time trying to get our cat off it - little baby hats...we never used these, especially since DS had such thick hair

Where can you buy your Miele HEPA machine? When I got one 5 years ago they didn't have them in the malls, just at their showroom somewhere near the creek with no parking. I need to get another one and don't fancy that journey again! edited by Frazzled on 08/09/2012 Along SZR near the Trade center roundabout. If you are able to download App's, there is one called "what's for dinner". You can type in one ingedient or a few and it searches the internet for recipes and shows you a list. There is a free version (lite), or one you can pay a little for a extended version of it. Its a great app!

Miele!!! Bought one in the States and wasn't sure it would work here, so we bought one here too! Love it!!! Originally bought our first canister Miele with HEPA to alleviate my sons allergy to our cats. It made all the difference- no drugs!! I read a ton of reviews on Amazon, and it helped. Since moving here, the issues have changed- the dust and mold spores are a problem and much harder to vacuum it all up. Having the a/c ducts properly cleaned an sanitized is all you can do for that. But the Miele, is still the way to go. I have used my sisters' Dyson at her house and there is at least a 1.5- 2 inch gap beween where the vacuum reaches and walls. Not a issue with the Miele.

How old is your child D-J? I can recommend Dr. McEwan. He has a wonderful bedside manner and genuinely cares about your child. My son snored and had sleep apnea so bad, so by the advice of a Dr in the states, we had his adenoids removed when he was 2 + eight months. 2 months later, we moved to Dubai and within 2 weeks, the snoring and apnea started again, and he also complained of sore throats and ears. :-(. I put off getting it looked into and it only got worse. Couldn't imagine going through another surgery after such a short period of time! When my son saw Dr McEwan, he informed me that my sons Tonsils were "massive" and had to come out. My son finally had the surgery at the end of this past May - 1 year and a month after the first surgery. Guess what- not only were his tonsils the size of an adults, but his adenoids had partially grown back! The recovery with the tonsils is rough. But, my son no longer snores nor does he stop breathing as he sleeps. :-). I was stressed before the surgery and every time I would check on him while he slept. After the surgery, I now feel so relieved and happy for my boy. :-) Good luck!

This is so scary. People think Dubai is this safe haven, and its not. I have been sent many alerts through my childrens school email warning parents about children being scooped up in Choitrams in attempted abductions, or vans pulling up asking kids on the street to get inside. People have tapped my kids on the head, but if anyone EVER tried to pick them up or walk off with them, I would alert security. This is totally unacceptable. How can your husband be so niave??? How can he put his daughters safety on the line like that??? Honestly, I would be afraid to leave my child with their father alone if he were this irresponsible. I am sorry to come off so harshly, but this is very serious.

I had the same tiny ants. They would even make their way to the dining table and a table next to the couch! I have repeatedly found the point of entry arounf the patio door, so I then seal it with silicone. After that , they seem to find a new point of entry around the same patio door. We seal that then. I called a pest control company and came close to setting an appt just last week, until the person told me that pregnant women and children 3 and under need to be out of the house for 24 hrs!!! What the heck do they spray around here??!! Well, I am pregnant and I have 2 children and cats. I have heard about deaths being related to toxic pest control sprays. My friend even told me how a few years back, someone had their apartment sprayed, and within a few days 2 of the neighbors triplets died ( toxins must have made their way through the vents). My advice? Spray outside, but find the point of entry and then seal it with silicone. We haven't seen our ants for almost 1 week now. :-)

If you have a top loader ( or an enormous bin), there is a liquid blueing agent that really does make whites WHITE! I used to use it in the US, but then we purchased front loader machines. I have seen it in grocery stores, but cannot recall the name. You may also see it in the section that sells detergents for traditional mens dress.

I 3rd Saniservice! I just had them out last week! We came home from our summer break and although we left the ac running, there was a terrible moldy odor as soon as we walked in. My husband and son developed a cough within a few hours. They came in a few days later for a consult and showed pictures right away of our ducts- absolutley disgusting!! A white fungus was on he filters!! And this is after we had the ducts cleaned last October and the AC maintenance done (supposedly) in June. They take care to cover up everything with plastic and clean up after themselves before they leave. Yes, pricey. But its your breathing!!! I had Epsco out last October and I thought they were fine. But I was more impressed with Saniservice. Highly recommend!! After this, i will have our ducts cleaned wherever we relocate to!
