definitely loved the "old Dubai". I remember: Al Ghurair centre was the only shopping mall. Our annual school picnics to Safa Park which was more sand and less grass in the 80s and 90s! Long drives to Khorfakkan beach - lovely place! Channel 33 was the only English channel... loved the cartoons back then and they had some great shows as well. On Thursday nights they'd show a Hindi (Indian) movie and we'd wait eagerly every weekend for it - although most of the times they'd show the worst possible movies! I remember loving the "back in Dubai" song everytime I'd land at Dubai airport on the way back from our holidays.... the song was regularly played at the airport (or the pland while landing, can't remember)! Dubai 92 was the only radio station back then... they had this jingle they used play everytime: [i'>[/i'>Seat belt time is here again, so please make sure you're wearing yours, I know this jingle doesn't rhyme, but it might save your life![i'>[/i'> This was when wearing seat belts wasn't mandatory. <em>edited by terrible_twos on 26/04/2011</em>

The organic cafe in Dubai mall is the best place to get gluten free flours and other products. There are quite a few threads on gluten free on EW. The most recent one was couple of weeks back: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=143371 Lots of information in the above thread. Hope this helps and good luck!

I had dry eyes for about 5/6 months after but felt that my eyes were becoming dependent on the drops. So i gradually weaned myself off the drops over a couple of weeks and havent looked back since. That was five years ago. Thanks for the reply Eibhlin. I'm also worried about getting dependent of the drops. I'll probably use for the another couple of months and gradually stop.

Thanks Saharagypsyrose, Chocs01 and AnonDubai. I've always had dry eyes, but I never needed hydrating drops prior to surgery. I think I'm just frustrated with constantly having to put drops over the past 3 months.... and dry eyes seem to make my vision a bit blurred. Hi TT, your frustration is understandable as it not only affects your comfort but your vision as well. What type of drops are you using now? Did the doctor you saw here suggested something else? The main reason could be tear quality issue which leads to quick evaporation causing dryness and blurry vision. Thanks Saharagypsyrose. I'm using Refresh Liquigel lubricant eye drops (Allergan). The doctor here says these drops are fine. I'm also using another one at bedtime called Genteal gel (Novartis).

Purple, have you done the celiac profile test? It's a blood test - if it's positive, then the doctor may advise to get an endoscopy done (I didn't get this done, my blood test came back positive and that was enough for me to stop eating gluten). But your daughter will need to be eating gluten to get the correct result. Also, I've read on celiac.com site that sometimes the blood test will come back negative even if someone has celiac! So don't just go by what the blood test shows. If she responds well to a gluten free diet, stick to it! She may also have vitamin deficiencies. So get her tested for vitamin D and B12. As BFC mentioned, avoid oats - you'll get gluten free ones in the organic cafe, but apparently lots of celiacs cannot tolerate oats. So it's to avoid this at least in the beginning. Many celiacs are also lactose intolerant - so check that out as well. I know it can all be very confusing and overwhelming, but in a couple of months, it'll fall into place. I don't know about doctor recommendations - my endocrinologist diagnosed me after seeing my thyroid levels go up and down in a span of 8 months. I'm still going to him and not any other specialist. Maybe you can see a gastroenterologist? Hopefully someone on EW can advise you on this.

thanks so much. Great advice. Lulus is a bit far for me but will try to get over there this week. Does gluten free bread freeze well? Some of the advice online says to keep separate butters and separate toasters etc for the gluten free products to avoid cross contamination. Do we need to be doing this? is being careful enough or should we put all her gluten free things in her own cupboard etc? I have a 4 year old boy also and although I am happy to go gluten free I wont be forcing him or my husband to so there will still be plenty of real pasta and bread etc in the house..... It's better if you have separate butter/oil for her.... just make sure you wash the spoon or knife that you use for your gluten products before using on her gluten free ones. Separate toaster is also recommended although I'm still using the same toaster/oven. If you drink from a bottle of water, make sure she doesn't drink from the same one.... You can keep the gluten and gluten free products together in the same cupboard, but just label them so that you don't mix them up. Is your daughter just gluten intolerant or does she have celiac? If she has celiac, then she'll need to be very careful. If it's an intolerance, you may not need to be as careful - unless she's very sensitive to even a crumb. For parties, it's best you carry your own food - at least in the beginning until you figure out what she can/cannot eat. For the birthday party this weekend, you can make some gluten free sandwiches and also take some gluten free cookies (something sweet so that she doesn't feel bad that she can't eat the cake).

Have found gluten free bread in Lulu hypermarket in Karama. They sometimes bake the gluten free bread.... it tastes fine, except it's slightly sweet. They also keep a UK brand of breads called Liv Well http://www.livwell.eu/ which are gluten, dairy and wheat free. You'll find these in the cold section... where they have the long lasting cakes, etc. I've seen multi grain, buns and ciabatta rolls in this brand. They're quite tasty and you can even toast the multi grain one :) Read the labels of all packaged foods. Soya sauce contains gluten, so make sure you buy a gluten free one which is available in the organic cafe. Baking powder also contains gluten. Again, you'll find gluten free in the organic cafe. French fries which are frozen also contain gluten - so avoid buying these from restaurants - unless you make them yourself! MSG may or may not contain gluten.... so best avoid it... loads of crisps contain MSG, keep a look out for that. Lays brand salted flavour is fine. Also bought some yummy ones from marks and spencer which didn't say "gluten free", but the ingredients were gluten free, so it should be fine. Organic cafe have a yummy frozen gluten free pizza as well - brand name is Amy's. Regarding ice cream, I love baskin robbins and went on their website and looked into the the ingredients of my favourite flavours :) http://www.baskinrobbins.com/Nutrition/ I know for sure their chocolate chip is gluten free. Just remember that just because something is "wheat free" it doesnt mean it's necessarily gluten free as well. There are plenty of threads on gluten free and celiac on EW. Try doing a search. This one helped me loads: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=109378 Also, get on this site: www.celiac.com This site has loads of information and a very nice forum with lots of helpful people you can ask questions. This is a list of safe ingredients: http://www.celiac.com/articles/181/1/Safe-Gluten-Free-Food-List-Safe-Ingredients/Page1.html And a list of unsafe ingredients: http://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsafe-Gluten-Free-Food-List-Unsafe-Ingredients/Page1.html Finally, organic cafe have loads of gluten free stuff like pasta, cornflakes, ice cream, chocolate, cookies, flours, etc. Make sure you go on the 3rd saturday of the month where you'll get 20% off on your bill - it's a huge saving considering how expensive gluten free stuff is!

got stuck in crazy traffic in Karama last night around 11pm. Poeple dancing on streets, screaming, waving the Indian flag and crackers as well... total madness... There were couple of cops directing the traffic, but they were not stopping the celebrations, which was really nice of them :) I'm sure Bur Dubai would have been worse!

I also felt that I knew 80s music really well, but I had never heard some of the 30 to 40 odd songs in the quiz! There's a 90s music quiz as well on the same site: http://www.yetanotherdot.com/asp/90s.html Going to check that out now.... lots of good music during that decade, but nothing can beat the 80s :)

The word "Nelson" in cricket is usually given to the score of 111 (and it's multiples)... kind of a superstition where they believe that a wicket is going to fall at that particular score. The late umpire David Shepherd would always hop whenever the score would reach 111.... a nice quirky superstition. ETA: I don't quite know who Nelson is though... will need to google that! <em>edited by terrible_twos on 25/03/2011</em>

But really who is Darren Sammy?? I've never heard of him until this world cup. Is he a bowler or batsman? How did he become a captain when they've got players like Sarwan, Chanderpaul and Gayle? <em>edited by terrible_twos on 23/03/2011</em>

HUGE upset if it's the Windies; my money's on Pakistan for this one. They've won the lion's share of their past decade's turn-outs and the Windies -- like Australia, it must be admitted! -- are a bit hit-and-miss during this WC. Tomorrow's my doomsday. Gulp. Think India winning may be an even surer thing ... Sigh! :( WM, don't think India winning is a sure thing. In fact, Australia losing to Pakistan could be the very thing that'll make them a more difficult opponent for India tomorrow - don't think they've lost 2 games in a row for quite some time! And with Hussey back (my favourite Aussie player), it should be a good game :) Our bowling attack is still quite weak and fielding, well.... the less said the better! Harbhajan is already shooting off his mouth... wish he'd just concentrate on his bowling instead.

Babylons, agree with the others... I've had the vitamin D injection and didn't have any pain afterwards... just slightly sore (like a bruise) on that spot for a couple of days. Follow up with your doctor on this.
