Just a word of warning here with regards to having people come to do the electrical stuff..... Be very careful that they are properly qualified electricians as the people who do the initial wiring in the house arent usually, which can have disastrous results. DH is a fully qualified electrician (and engineer) and changed the light fittings in one of our houses. Went to the DB, turned off the relevant breaker switches for that circuit, and then checked the switch. Lo and behold, lights were wired into the plug socket circuits... Painting and odd job stuff - in terms of health and safety, pretty fine for your average person to do. Electricity? NO.

Thanks OP - its a bit of a wakeup call. what I mean is that, how often do we get to that scanner thing, dump all the stuff out our pockets etc into that bowl thing and walk through without waiting to see the bowl actually go into that machine. anyone could lift something out of the bowl without you seeing and, chances are, on the other side you just grab whatever is in the bowl and stuff it back in your pockets to get out of the way of the next people coming through... Im not necessarily talking about Dubai here, its quite possible anywhere really...

I wonder what method DED uses, whatever, it does work apparently :) I daresay the threat of not getting a trade licence renewed (DED are the ones who do this) is a rather convincing argument :) Glad you hit it sorted!

A glass before cooking. Preferably on an empty stomach. So I wouldnt remember I had a glass before I started cooking... So Id have a glass whilst cooking. And then Id need a glass with dinner cause the food was burnt because.... well, Id jussht have frogrotten to stove off the turn. And then I would have another glass after dinner to help get the remaining charcoal washed down my throat.

1 portion pumpkin / butternut, 1 stock cube, 1 small onion, 2 large tablespoons low fat/normal philadelphia. Put pumpkin, chopped onion and stock cube in a pot of water and boil until pumpkin is soft. Use hand blender to "gzhish" until smooth (dont empty the cooking water out). Add philadelphia and gzhish again until mixture is creamy looking. Serve with warm bread :) Hope you feel better soon! Note: Can do this with any veg really. Just dont use fat free philadelphia as it doesnt really cream well.

I think its more about quality of life really for us... Savings are an added bonus (although one of the reasons we are out here...). We are both professionals, both work and bring in sizeable incomes, which enables us to drive nice cars, go for dinner when we want, live in a nice house etc etc. When we lived in the UK, we both were working and earning good salaries, but not having anywhere near the same quality of life we do here. And not saving either! And since Zimbabwe is really home, if we went home now, we would be gazillionaires!

DH says he went there (to building blocks) and there wasn't anyone there - except a mother and her young daughter. The mother said she was told it would be open on January 5th, but it clearly wasn't. Does anyone know when Emirates British will open? Are you sure he went to the right place? It was open from yesterday, and there are a fair few kids in my friends class already. They still have a bit of ordering to do, but by and large they're open for business :D

Hi to all the ladies who replied :) Thanks so much for emails - I have spoken with my maid and asked her to be very honest with me about what she is looking for in a new employer. She has said that she does not feel qualified to take on small children as she does not have much experience (rather sad actually, as it seems she had to leave her daughter in the Philippines at a very young age to come back here to work) and would rather work for a family that either has older children / no children, although she loves animals so would ideally like to go somewhere that they have pets as well. There is one lady out there (not to mention names, but the lady I did the red shirt cake for) who it seems would fit the bill well! For some reason I cannot log in to my mail.com account (not sure why!!!), but I will email you later on and maybe we can arrange for you to meet her? I really appreciate all of you who replied - Im sorry I havent managed to get back to each of you individually!!! In the event that the above one falls through, I will have a trawl through the emails I got again - would really like to find a nice place for her before I go! Good luck to all out there who are looking - there are many lovely people out there, dont let the bad apples spoil the barrow!!! Der - yep, thats me ;)

Hi Wikkid could you possibly let me know how much the rental is? How many cheques is the landlord willing to accept? Many thanks. Sorry - only just saw this! He is after 170K in 2 cheques (not negotiable though, since it is already priced below market). Let me know if you want to have a look around! wikkid at mail dot com

Sadly we are moving out our beautiful Granada (5 bedroom) at The Villa. Available relatively immediately! It is an absolute steal, especially since you can get it from the landlord direct. Fully fitted miele kitchen and the front garden has been landscaped. Wish we could just pick up the whole house and move it!! Drop me a line if you want to have a look around Wikkid at mail dot com
