A manicure is a great pick me up. We don’t know what it is, but getting our nails done makes us feel like a million bucks. So then, the disappointment of a chipped manicure only a day or two after it’s done is not exaggerated. Here’s what you should NOT do if you want to stay far away from chipville:
1. Don’t soak your nails
Soaking your nails ruins your manicure even before it has begun. Why? Your nails are like a sponge, they expand when they are wet and shrink when they are dry causing the polish to crack.
2. Don’t shake your nail polish
Shaking the polish bottle creates air bubbles, which makes the paint job look messy. Roll the bottle between your hands instead.
3. Don’t use hand sanitizer
Hand sanitizer dries out your nails and ruins the top coat. Stick to washing your hands with mild soap.
4. Don’t apply base-coat only once
Apply a second layer of base coat to the top half of your nails that are prone to chipping because of typing and texting.
5. Don’t skip nail oil
You should apply nail oil every day as dry nails are more prone to chipping.
6. Don’t keep your nails excessively long
This one’s pretty obvious – the longer the nail, the more prone it is to chipping.
7. Don’t apply one thick coat of polish
Applying two thin coats will lead to less chipping.
8. Don’t wait too long to apply top coat
Top coats work best when applied to wet nail polish.
9. Don’t apply matte nail polish
Yes, matte nails were all rage a few months ago, but we are going to give this fad a pass considering how easily matte nails chip.
10. Don't wash your hands for a few hours
Don’t wash your hands (especially not with warm water) for at least a few hours after getting your nails done. Did you know nail polish takes 12 hours to harden and dry completely? Well, now you do!
