Pinterest cleaning hacks that DO NOT WORK!

Just because it’s on Pinterest doesn’t mean it’s true! There are a tonne of tips and hacks about cleaning with household items - of course, some of them are just plain ridiculous. So to help you avoid wasting time and effort during your next cleaning mission, we set out to debunk some of the biggest Pinterest myths out there.

1. Using newspaper to clean windows

A lot of people swear by it, but the cold hard fact is that newspaper can do more harm than good to your windows. Newspaper is lighter than paper towels, or microfiber cloths, so it’s an inferior material for wiping. Worse, all that ink can also leave behind a nasty stain.

2. Combination of baking soda and vinegar for cleaning

Yes, it’s true that baking soda and vinegar are great cleaners, but not when you combine them. Getting them together sets off a chemical reaction that simply ends up creating salt water, which isn’t really a great cleaner.

3. Remove a burn mark from clothing with corn starch.

When you burn your clothes, the damage is pretty much irreversible, and no amount of corn starch is going to restore it to its original state.

4. Hairspray to remove ink stain on clothes

Hairsprays used by your grandmother had alcohol and the stuff that put a hole in the ozone layer. But not anymore. Most hairsprays don’t contain alcohol so this cleaning hack just doesn’t work.

5. Use mouthwash to kill bacteria in your washing machine

This hack makes our mouth open with amazement. Your mouth is nothing like your washing machine. And considering the size of an average washing machine you would have to use probably 20 mouthwash bottles to make any significant dent in the bacteria level.

6. Lemon wedges in your dishwasher for cleaner dishes

A couple of lemon wedges will certainly make your dishwasher smell nice, but your dishes won’t get any cleaner. Your dishwasher uses on average 3 – 5 gallons of water per load, so any cleansing contribution of the slices will simply be washed away.
