How To Banish Bad Smells From Your Home

Life stinks. What we mean is that no matter how much of a clean freak you are, there will always be some smell and odour you will encounter on a daily basis. But don't let that get you down, we have some easy to follow tips that will keep your house free from bad smells.

Food smells

If you do a lot of spicy or fried cooking, here’s a neat trick. Immediately after cooking, boil a cup of vinegar on the stove. The vapours that release into the air eliminate these smells.

Once every month you should also wash the kitchen cabinets with warm water and soap as the smells can become entrenched in them over time.

Smell from the fridge

Pour baking soda into a plastic butter tub and poke holes in the lid, change as often as needed. Wipe the fridge walls with white vinegar every few months to get rid of any lingering odours.

Dishwasher smells

Pour a gallon of household vinegar in the bottom, let it sit for an hour or so, and run the washer through a full cycle.

Washing machine smells

Mould and mildew can grow in your front load washing machines and stink up the laundry room. Wash away the mould and the smell by running a cycle with only two cups of bleach and warm or hot water. Also leave your door open between washings to avoid mould to build up again.

Pet urine and bacteria smells in the carpet

Got pets at home? The pee from your four-legged friends is seriously stinky, so act fast when there is an accident. Mix one part vinegar with three parts water and rub it on the carpet with a cloth. Then rinse the carpet with water and let it air dry.

Trash can smells

First wash your trash cans with hot soapy water to remove smelly bits and debris. Leave a couple of used fabric softener sheets in the bottom of your kitchen trash can to absorb odours.

Toilet smells

Pay extra attention to this frequently used bathroom fixture. Pour 1 cup of household vinegar into the bowl and let it stand for at least 5 minutes. Scrub briskly and flush.
