Unless you live in a villa - chances are your apartment bedroom in Dubai feels like living in a box - a tiny one at that. Don't fret; there are many things you can do to trick the eye into thinking that the room is bigger than it really is.
A small room is all about editing. Having too many things, patters, colours and ideas can make a room seem cluttered. However, by using the principles of light and scale to your advantage, you can make a small room look bigger.
Here are 8 ways.
1. Install pendant lighting/wall lighting
Mounting your lights on a wall or installing pendant lights is a great way to save space that would otherwise be taken by bulky lamps.
2. Focus on scale
Making a room look bigger is all about increasing the openness in a space. One way to do that is to get a loft bed. Furniture that is lower to the ground will create a feeling of openness in a room simply by the fact that they leave more space above them.

3. Use multi-functional pieces
Investing in furniture that serves many functions is a simple way to streamline a room. A daybed or an ottoman with underneath storage are perfect examples.
4. Add wall shelves
Instead of a nightstand that takes up a lot of space, opt for wall shelves. Not only are they a storage solution, they also add a sense of openness to the room.

5. Paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls.
If your walls are one colour and your ceiling another colour - the viewer instantly recognises the real size of the room because of the contrast. Painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls makes it harder for your eye to tell where the room's parameters start and end, so the room looks larger. If you want to have a coloured wall - choose any wall behind your bed.
6. Use mirrors/ mirrored closets
Using mirrors to make a room appear larger is the oldest trick in the book. In small bedrooms this often means replacing your closet doors with mirrored ones.

7. Forget about curtains/drapes/rugs
Curtains stop the eye from taking in the view outside, even if they don’t cover the whole window. And drapes and rugs just add more “stuff” to the room. Eliminating them keeps the space simple.
8. And most importantly - keep it simple
You need to be strict with yourself and only keep what is required. Everything in your room should be intentional and must have a purpose.
