This year Karl Lagerfeld designed the Claridge’s Christmas tree in London; the 16-foot centrepiece which Lagerfeld created was an upside down Christmas tree with spiralling silver roots at the top.

The 2017 Claridge’s Christmas tree has started a trend, as the upside down tree is making its way into our homes as an alternative Christmas decoration and Twitter is freaking out about it.

Although some find it artistic, others think the upside down Christmas tree is crazy and also disrespectful towards Christianity, as the traditional star or angel is supposed to point towards heaven. However, there is some history behind the bizarrely shaped tree, as Eastern Europeans reportedly hung their trees from the ceiling to represent the Holy Trinity around the time of the 12th century.

Today, it is a modern space-saving version of the traditional Christmas tree, with more room for presents to surround it. It also keeps most of your Christmas tree ornaments away from children and pets.

The chandelier style tree has also been spotted at Hotel Del Colorado and you can even purchase an upside down Christmas tree online in Dubai at desertcart.ae, if you want to turn your holidays upside down!

Love it or hate it (we’re still undecided) it does make a statement feature for the festive season. Here our top 10 picks of the Upside Christmas down tree
