First impressions matter. For guests coming to your home for the first time, your entryway has the power to form favourable first impressions about your house. Here are a few tips to design an entryway that not only creates a warm welcome but also leaves a lasting impression.

1. Clear the clutter

Bikes, shoes, golf clubs, tennis rackets, school bags – remove whatever makes your entryway looks chaotic and messy. Even if you choose not to add any decoration, your entryway will now look spacious and more appealing than before.

2. Get a runner rug

If you have a long entryway, placing a runner rug brings warmth, colour and softness to an otherwise dull area. You can choose from a high pile, low pile or flat woven runner for the perfect balance between comfort and aesthetics. While a stylish floor piece brings extra focus to your décor, make sure to add some anti-slip products underneath to hold the runner in place and prevent any nasty falls.

3. Tell a story with pictures

Create a fascinating story by lining the walls of your entryway with family photos. Baby pictures and vacations snaps are great choices as they always make guests feel at home and get conversations started. There is something incredible about grainy and faded photos in the age of digital ones – they bring back memories and evoke a sense of time and place in a way pictures on your iPhone just can’t.

4. Add a piece of history

From a Ming vase and a grandfather clock to a French ornamental desk or even ancient weapons like muskets, adding an antique piece at your entryway is an interesting touch.

5. Mirror, mirror on the wall

A simple hack for a dark entryway: Place a mirror facing a window so that the reflected sunlight adds more life to a dark hallway. It also serves a practical purpose - giving your guests a chance to do a quick hair or makeup adjustment
