Try Chez Toi if you want someone to come to you. http://www.cheztoibeauty.com/ Otherwise, Faye at Essential on Al Wasl Road is fabulous at waxing.

Hello! I've had 2 large canvases stretched and framed at Jamjar in Al Quoz: http://www.thejamjardubai.com/ They did a great job for a reasonable price (depends on the size of canvas) and delivered to the house too.

Thank you ladies! I know Dr. Zainab from when City first opened, and would happily go back to her, and would also trust your recommendations.

Dear ladies, My LO has to see a pediatrician every 2 weeks, and due to the insurance policy regulations I need to find someone at one of the hospitals. I would prefer Medcare (Safa), City or American. We have an excellent pediatrician who we normally see at a local clinic, however this number of visits won't be covered by insurance as the clinic is not within the network :( Looking forward to your feedback and thanks in advance.

Has anybody seen this anywhere in Dubai? It specifically has to be "Dutch pressed" - it's a low-carb thing. TIA!

My husband's and my wills just arrived via shop and ship / Aramex - seeming the safest way to get them here for us to review and sign them, as they were prepared in the UK. I'm used to birthday presents and other packages being slashed open, but for the first time it just feels "wrong" that this particular highly confidential brown envelope has been slashed open before delivery to me... I understand the reasons, and I know we could have had the documents prepared here, but is nothing sacred?!?

If you haven't been before, it's a treat to go to the One and Only Royal Mirage spa, and then to the Rooftop bar there for drinks outside (before the weather gets too hot i.e. now!). There are lots of "ladies nights" around town, but another favourite is to go for outdoor cocktails at Uptown Bar in Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and then on to Mahiki nightclub (same hotel). Have fun and get outside while you still can!

We had the most amazing stay at the Mandarin Oriental in Chiang Mai. They have a colonial style hotel, and then beautiful, secluded villas dotted around the paddy fields. We stayed there on honeymoon, but are planning to go back with our children (3 and 1 currently). The pools are fabulous, spa to die for, lovely restaurants etc. but what made it for us was an enormous lending library with loads of books and DVDs, plus bike hire so you could all get around the hotel grounds. It was so relaxed, and the staff were very friendly. I'm not sure about prices, but if you can stretch to it, it would be worth every dirham.

Have you looked in Massimo Dutti? I bought two from there last week - one just above the knee, but still respectable, and one kneelength in a more turquoise denim than traditional denim. Good luck!

Dear ladies, I just wanted to give you all feedback after the hugely kind response to my nervous state before my LASEK surgery. I would recommend this surgery and now I can see perfectly (better than 20:20 in fact!). The procedure is simple, fast and straightforward and the team at Moorfields Eye Hospital were extremely professional and kind. You can see immediately following the surgery, although it would not be safe to drive. The first week following surgery is very unsettling. You have to put in lots of eye drops, and contrary to the scare stories of having your eyes closed for 3 days, you can see for yourself. My husband helped me out on day 1, as the painkillers started to wear off and I was sitting with my head in my hands for comfort. If he hadn't been around though, I would have managed. I would say that if you have young and non self-sufficient children (as I do) you definitely need help for the first few days. I found that I wanted to rest, as my vision was so blurry it made me feel disorientated and tired. The surgeon warned me that Day 3 would be the worst, and he was right. My eyesight deteriorated on that day, and I had a real sense of being off-balance. I spent the whole of that day in bed, with the curtains drawn, listening to audio books and trying to remain positive! From Day 4 onwards, things really improved day by day. The best way to describe it is as if you have a slightly different prescription in each eye, and then each day they gradually adjust. So I could see perfectly out of each eye, but not with both eyes together. I really had to keep the faith, as of course I was wondering if I was ever going to be able to see perfectly again! During this time, I had support from the nurses at Moorfields, who reassured me that it could take up to 1 month to fully settle down. I felt confident enough to drive after about 10 days, even though I could still see a little blurring, so I kept to the quiet local roads for the school run and didn't go near the busy roads until about 14 days post-surgery, when I knew that I could see OK again. Everyone is different and recovers differently, but the main lesson I learnt from this was not to plan anything really for the first 3 weeks following surgery. I could not read comfortably for at least 2 weeks, and if I had had to for work or another reason, this would have been very difficult. I think the hospital team could have been clearer about this up front, as I was told several times that I would be able to drive after 1 week, however on closer inspection (squinting!) at the literature post-surgery, it clearly said that I should expect blurry vision for 3 weeks. I really hope this helps anyone considering the procedure. LASIK is apparently even faster to recover from. My surgeon was Dr. Edmondo Borasio, and I would highly recommend him.

Thank you Alismum! I'm not in that area but I think I'm sorted now. The surgery is definitely LASEK. The person I spoke to had the older type of PRK surgery, so hopefully my recovery will be faster. I'll let you all know how it goes when I can see to type again! xxx

Thanks ladies - hugely reassuring!!! I'm just going on worst case scenario from a friend who had it done a year ago. My husband's going to work from home as much as possible, and a couple of other people are now on call too....phew! And thank you so much Marroosh for your very, very kind offer, and for searching for me. I guess it was just a bit of a shock that my mum wasn't going to be around and then "worst case" stories always make me think that's going to be me! xxx

I feel your pain! It took 6 weeks for Etisalat to connect us in our new house, and the whole situation was dramarama from start to finish. The only way I got it resolved was by going to the main service centre, behind Al Murooj Rotana. There is a manager there called Mr. Salah (sp?) who you can ask to see in person. If he's not there, insist that you need to see a manager. My advice is to be very polite, but firm. Tell him exactly how long you have been waiting, and take printouts of all your correspondance with you, along with all your ID copies. If it's in your DH's name, take his ID copies and his original ID too. I know it sounds bizarre, but this particular man really organized everything for me, and I had people round the same day to fix everything. In the end, we canceled downgraded our Elife package to just phone and internet, and went with OSN for TV, as they are just so much easier to deal with (they connected us on the day of enquiry!) HTH

You are v welcome to borrow mine to see if it works. It's practically new, but really bothered my DD. She kept getting up to look at it and in the end we took it away! She has slept beautifully ever since...LOL!

Hi, you could try kiddicare.com - if they don't have it on the website then you can call customer services. They're usually v helpful, and might be able to point you in the right direction if they don't have it. I needed one for my Phil and Teds pushchair, and they delivered (to the UK) in 48 hours.

Wow ladies, thank you for the great and encouraging response! So I think I'm going to spend tomorrow morning on the phone and driving round before speaking to our LL. Sounds like it is possible to do, with the great idea of hotel apartments as a fall-back...I'll keep you posted! By the way, any recommendations for hotel apartments (short lease) if we can't sort ourselves out in time? edited by eclaire on 20/09/2011

i've never seen any children.... had to laugh today though - car in front of me decided to overtake the truck in front of him on the really high bump just before al reem 3..the scraping noise of his underside as he sped off was priceless !! Brilliant... :) P.S. we're inundated with kids on skateboards in our streets, can you recommend somewhere quieter to live??!!;)

It seriously terrifies me as I know how fast my toddler can scamper, and how fast some cars go to overtake me, sometimes just to pull in at a garage a few houses up the road...:(

This is a plea to the people who feel the need to overtake and speed on the residential streets in the Ranches - the reason we have to drive slowly is because so many children and toddlers are out on these streets. It would only take a second for one of them to step into the road and be mowed down by somebody going too fast. I was out with the pram yesterday in Alma and was already crossing the road, when I had to step back off the road to avoid being mowed down by a blue Explorer who was racing down the road and flying over the speed bumps....please slow down!

We had one of these a couple of years ago, and it stopped working quite quickly. In fact, it was only when we heard screaming in the distance that we realized it had just switched off. If you double-check the 1-star reviews on Amazon, you'll see lots of people have had this problem with this monitor...I really would not recommend it. When we returned it, they acknowledged it was a manufacturing fault - which is outrageous, because that would mean it's not fit for purpose. We went for the best-selling Philips one as a replacement, and that one has been reliable for over a year now. I think you can get it here, perhaps in Babyshop? Hope this helps - sorry I don't want to rain on your parade about the BT monitor, but I wish someone had warned us!

To update you on this, I've been down to Satwa clinic today for my maid to have her follow-up Hep B vaccination. I asked 3 people working there if the Health Card was still necessary, and the response was that it is now optional. If the maid gets sick, she needs to go to a government hospital and pay the charge, Health Card or not. Does anybody know if there is any benefit then in now getting a Health Card?

Hi Jules, We are also in AR, and our LO does full days at Children's Oasis in Umm Suqeim. Hot lunch is provided, and she has a long nap in a very quiet room (usually on her own with a supervisor) as there aren't that many toddlers who stay the full day and need the nap. When she wakes up, she joins the busy afternoon class. This works for us, and you can make it in 20 mins on a good run! x
