Poor boy, fortunately you found a school that can welcome your child...But just one thought : the fact that you say he is 3 but has the vocabulary of a 6 year-old boy.I think you child may be advanced (I don't know if this is the right word inenglish) and that may be the reason why some people/teachers do not know how to handle/react to such children....well just a thought :)

Hi there, I am about to leave Dubai after almost 4 years and Breteuil you took the words out of my mouth but I know I will miss Dubai (not for the sun, which I have always hated) for the sea, the nice & cheap restaurants, the easy life for children...and it is like I say to myself : "OK the dream is over, let's get back to reality" but is it really a good thing ?

We renewed our contract in August : 2 cheques. We decided to break the contract at the end of Feb. The rule in our case is 2 months penalty and we get our second cheque back. Or we can find a new tenant and we will not pay the 2 months penalty. However I don't know if this is a global rule...

Thanks Mahr for the info. I was about to put one on my car and was wondering why I couldn't notice many of these on others' cars ! And even if it's been the law for ages, rules in Dubai can be valid one year and suppressed the following year, look at the whole ID story ! hilarious !!!!

Mine was awful and I do not really care about esthetism but I had a cheloid scar. I had it treated in Paris (where I used to live) at a dermatologist. He performed some regular cortison injections in the scar (veeeery painful) but today you can hardly see the scar and it has been reopened for a second c-section...

yes that is what I say...for my defense, why would I have been the one to be bumped out especially as my guests were only staying in Dubai for 5 days and that was their first visit in the city. This is what I learnt here (and I am not this kind of person at all !) : you have to shout louder to get what you want (so glad to go back home by the way)

We booked a safari with desert safari for guests and 2 hours before the departure they called us saying that one of their cars had a motor problem so they could come but 2 hours later, which would have meant at 5pm. So no need to say that it would have been night time by the time we reached the desert = no dune bashing ! After yelling on the phone, they finally sent us a car on due time...but I would avoid this company as there are plenty of others ! You can't help mechanical problems, hardly worth shouting at them for it, it's not their fault. I've always used Knights tours, very very good and most of the drivers are locals, so you get a good authentic feel for everything. OK but how do you explain that they finally found a car ? Unfortunately in Dubai the best served is the one who shouts the loudest :(

I was furious when one of the Moms at school told her 5 yr old daughter the TRUTH....DS came home with a load of questions because this girl had blabbed it all out. I told her mother that it was not appropriate....she disagreed and told me where to shove it. Anyway, TG for C-Sect scars, that got me a good escape for a while. And I was furious when my daughter came back from school with crazy stories she had been told about it : like "my father gave birth to me" or other stupid things...Of course I used APPROPRIATE words and description to explain the whole thing. edited by kikidubai on 25/01/2012

Reflets (Gagnaire) is just amazing ! La Baie (Ritz hotel) is nice as well... Pierchic is more romantic and the food is not so amazing. La petite Maison has good food but this is not what I call "luxury"

I explained the truth to my children (8 and 5 years old) a few weeks ago as they were questioning about this due to one of our neighbours being pregnant. Unfortunately my english vocabulary is limited re. this subject for children so I cannot really translate what I told them in french ! I used words we used for children to name the s..x of the dad and the mum...

I know what you mean. I had to collect my car at the garage this morning after one week and I had to insist so that they would finish the job ! however I had called them this morning before showing up and they said the car was ready. And on top of that there was no fuel left at all in the tank (but like really 0 fuel - with the little fuel tank light indicator on the dashboard...). I was so angry but didn't raise my voice ! I was so prouuuuud of me :)

OK OK I know you are dying to hear the "end" of the story. Last night I was completely panicked when I saw her face so I phoned my dentist who has an emergency service (which I didn't know until yesterday when I had a look at his website). He told me the medicine she was given is fine even though not the best. He was very nice and proposed to see her but obviously at a very very expensive rate. He was OK to put it on my name for the insurance though. But when I proposed my maid to take her (but she would have to pay for the part my insurance wouldn't cover), she refused (for the record we are currently leaving Dubai due to DH's redundancy and we are trying to cut off on costs) saying she could wait on Saturday to see her dentist. This morning, she went to see her dentist who told her he couldn't extract the tooth because of the infection and that she needs to take antibiotics for 3 more days before coming back to him. et voilà !

and by the way as long as you get the green sheet from the police, you can go to your insurance and get reimbursed for the damage.

Yes I know you can get antibiotics without any prescription, they just sell medicine as candies here. She is under antibiotics since yesterday but got them from the pharmacist, which is not reliable for me. Just for a little story about it : one of my friend asked the pharmacist for medicine for her son who seemed to have an eye infection but she phoned the doctor before giving him this medicine and the paediatrician said this is not to be given to a child and especially in the eye so my trust in pharmacists diagnosis is very low in this country... That's why I wanted her to see a GP at least to confirm the medicine and that is why I sent her to Rashid's hospital. So yes it is a joke that the GP told her to take panadol ! Any GP should be able to determine which antibiotic is the most effective one to use in a special case (as there are so many different ones to be used in so many different cases). Anyway I have just called my dentist, end of the story...

yes that is why I told her to go to the dentist IMMEDIATELY but I had to insist and insist again and again. Just a feedback on the story : there wwas no dentist at the Iranian Hospital at that time so she was sent by the hospital to a clinic in Satwa where there was no dentist either (I love this organization !). So she went home with a couple of medicine...and will go back to her dentist tonight.

Hi ladies, I used the search function and I ended up with 2 big names : Crown (which we used in the past), Allied Pickfords Do you know which one is cheaper (we are currently in the process of the quote but any tips would be welcomed) ? Would you recommend any other companies ? We are also asking a quote from AGS (french one), has anyone experienced it before ? Thanks a lot

MaiTai I have a recurrent sciatic nerve problem as well and this time it's been 4 days the pain started and it is still here (less painful though) and my joints have started to be painful since a couple of months too. For another problem, I had to start taking progesteron and it looks like this treatment decreases the pain related to the joints...I have no idea why...

Hi, I don't know this street particularly so I had a look on googlemaps and it is just very near to Place des Vosges in Le Marais neighbourhood, which is a very nice place to stay : a lot of restaurants, small shops, art galleries and also nice museums. Plus you will be near Strauss Kahn's apartment so do not stay out late at night !!! One of the tube stations is Saint Paul on the line n°1 which allows you to easily go to the West or East of Paris, as this line litterally crosses the city...

Wafi ! I subscribed an annual membership six months ago and the only reason for that is that I am a swimmer and they have a big pool... At the end of November I received a mail saying that the pool would be closed the whole month of december for renovation. I was upset...today I phoned the club to check whether I could come and swim and they answered that they have changed the dates of renovation and that the pool would be closed until the end of January !!!! I was really upset as I didn't even receive a notification about this. What would you do ? ask for reimbursement ? I am so fed up with the service in Dubai (and I come from France, which is not e reference, believe me) Sorry for the message but I cannot believe how they consider customers in this country !

I am quite used to migrain (usually a few days before my periods and in the middle of the cycle). It has been improved lately with the prescription of progesteron, as it looks like I have a low level of this hormon. You may also have a hormon problem ? These migrains could last up to 3 or 4 days and I couldn't stand the light as well...

My maid gets 2100 dhs/month (all included : food+doctor+phone+bbsitting). She has her own room+bathroom, starts at 9.00 and finishes around 7pm with one hour break for lunch. We have a 4 bedroom house but she doesn't have to take care of the gardening however she has to wash the cars (that was the deal for this year when we increased her salary). She has 1 month summer holiday, fridays off. Usually we give her 2 days for Eid, 1 for Christmas, 1 for Eastern (she is christian). She has been working for us for 3 years and is great with my 2 kids (she can play football with my 8 year old boy and do painting, puzzles and artcraft with my 5 year old daughter).

I quite agree with Edna...I thought the crowd was back again in Sep/oct but I noticed the traffic is better on SZR now than a couple of months ago. But I really don't know why...I was always stucked in the traffic between Safa and Tradecenter R/A when coming back from tennis/soccer for DS between 6 and 7 PM but it is OK now.

I have a friend who has hired teachers from school to look after their kids in the afternoon. Another one has found a teacgher from a nursery to do this as well...this seems to me to be one of the best solutions, what do you think ? they have just put an ad on websites and at schools...
