About the pool - I called Taziz a while ago to ask when on earth they were going to sort it out. They said it would be finished by end of September...days are ticking by and NOTHING is happening. I'm livid! There is no way it'll be done in the next three weeks. That pool has been out of bounds for months! What do we pay maintenance fees for?! And you can bet as soon as we stop paying it they'd be banging our door down demanding it. Anyone fancy a demonstration outside the Business Bay office?!

Hi Curly, It was about £30 to join, which covers the first three months, and you get all the online tools. So basically a food diary type thing that tracks all your points that you eat - you type in any food and it tells you how many points it's worth, depending on the amount you'll be eating. It's brilliant. I don't know what I'd do without it! I certainly couldn't do it without the tracker. After the first three months it's £10 a month I think. I love doing it online - I did it online back home too, I never bothered with the meetings just because I never had the time to go, and I tend to work better on something on my own than with a weekly meet up scenario. Online you also have all the forums, where loads of lovely people keep your spirits up if you're having a bad food day, or start online challenges which are great at keeping you motivated. I'd highly recommend it! So far, my best "finds" here in Dubai are: - Eating out in Yo Sushi is very point friendly! - There's a website done by an American lady (I think) that has loads of restaurants here on it, with the points for everything: http://www.dwlz.com/restaurants.html - Arabic food can be surprisingly low in points, especially if you stick to shish tawook, other grilled chicken dishes, and salads. Anyone else with WW tips? :)

Wow it's great to hear how successful it is for other people! I'll definitely give it a good then. Might invest in a set of hand weights as I noticed one of the later exercises involves being in the press up position whilst leaning on the weights...don't fancy a can of beans exploding on my living room floor so I think actual weights are the way to go. Here's to losing those inches!!

I'd definitely be up for sharing recipes and tips with other weight watchers out here...I brought my old points calculator out here but it's not in the new propoints format so totally useless now. And the blackberry app some people have managed to find that works out propoints for you is nowhere to be found on the middle east app store! Typical! I'm just gonna keep trudging on via the uk WW website and will have to be strict with myself. That website was really helpful, thanks Monkeyface :-)

But the people who had these problems were amongst the first to check in! They arrived at the airport 3 and a half hours before the flight time! It's not on at all. I intend to write a strongly worded letter to Emirates...who knows what will come of it.

This is a question for any ladies who've had babies here or are due to...the statutory 40 days paid maternity leave, is that really all we get? I've heard that includes weekends, as part of the 40 days too, so it's not even 40 working days! I'm shocked, as back home (England) maternity is pretty good, and there's also a paternity leave option too. Here, nada. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Can more days be "bought"? Or do you just lose your job if you don't go back after 40 days?! <em>edited by amel123 on 11/02/2012</em>

Is there a massive difference between the Union Co-op at Al Safa and the other Co-op? I went to the union one recently and it was rubbish...hardly any jars of sauces or tinned vegetables, and the fruit & veg were in an appalling state. I was not impressed! The prices of the few bits I did get weren't great either, barely any cheaper than Spinneys or Waitrose.

I have just noticed (when I went to use one) that my fine dining entertainer book is missing vouchers A57 thru to A64. Has anyone else found this or do I win the willy wonka gold chocolate bar? I have emailled the entertainer as no one is answering the phone now. So is ours!! The exact same pages are missing. And like you said, they weren't ripped out, it was bought sealed so obviously just bound incorrectly. If you do manage to get hold of anyone from head office, could you let me know? I wonder what they'll do to compensate...

He is a Fetal Medicine specialist so heaven forbid there are any complications, you'd be in good hands :-) I am having identical twins, sharing a placenta so am considered high risk. Nicola How exciting! Identical twins! That's amazing :) Congratulations & good luck! Thank you for the recommendation x

if you have relatives in the UK who are planning to come over around the time you give birth, get them to bring EVERYTHING you need. It's sooooooo much cheaper in the UK - as in 25-50% cheaper. Seriously, you'll be missing a trick if you buy in Dubai when you have the UK option. Hardware from Kiddicare.com, clothes from Tescos/Asda/Sainsbury's plus a few nice outfits from Boots/Mothercare (but people will always gift you nice outfits)... heck, I used to fill my suitcases up with wet-wipes (69p/pack vs 15aed for some decent ones(the Chub ones)), sugar-free (and now colourant free) medicines, teething powders... gosh. really EVERYTHING! As for labour, I'm apparently a bit of a freak because I loved it. Try to clear your mind of any expectations, relax and think of your birth plan not as an actual plan of action, but rather as a set of preferences or guidelines. I read up on hypnobirthing, which seemed to work for me, in that my labour was so pain-free (in relative terms) that I only needed a couple of paracetamols. Read up also on the pain-fear-tension cycle... but also don't research every minute detail too much... Work out how you feel about it all and don't listen to anyone who wants to surround you with negativity. At the end of the day, it's your pregnancy, your body and your labour - YOU are going to deliver your child and you are going to raise it in the best manner [i'>you[/i'> see fit. Have the confidence to forge you own path, trust your body and your instincts because they are rarely wrong! There, parenting in a nutshell. Job done! ;) Sorry to jump on the post bandwagon, but just wanted to ask HelloAgainKitty about the hypnobirthing thing. I'm not pregnant yet but we're starting to think about where & when (here or home) and am very keen to read up on anything that will put my mind at ease about labour!

Hi amel123, I have recently given birth to my first baby here in Dubai. I too was unsure whether to go ahead and try for a baby in this country or wait until I go back home. It was a big decision for me as I did not know many people in this country and would ideally have liked my family and friends around me. However a few of my friends back home have had trouble conceiving and are going through treatments. This made me think that there was no point waiting as I too could face problems like them and I don't want to wait a few years to find that it could take a few years of treatments before I was lucky enough to have a baby. Thankfully I did not have any issues and conceived first try :) I saw Dr Ibrahim at City hospital throughout the pregnancy and can't recommend him highly enough. I was very nervous at first about seeing a male Dr but those nerves disappeared the first time I met him. He is very professional, friendly, polite and re- assuring. I felt that I could ask him anything and he always fully explained everything to me. He was fantastic in the delivery room too - can not fault a thing :) Also it is amazing how many people you meet that are in the same situation as you - I have made so many new friends since I found out I was pregnant and do not know what I would have done without their help and support. Plus all the ladies on here are fantastic at offering advice if you are a clueless new mum like me! lol :) Good luck with making your decision - if you do decide to go for it then happy trying ;) Thank you KTS! I'll definitely look Dr Ibrahim up, thanks for the recommendation :) It is a nerve wracking decision, but I always said I wanted my first baby before I was 30 as older friends of mine have had problems conceiving and a couple have had very sad losses too, so I don't want to run that risk if possible. It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience out here in Dubai though, and yes I have noticed how helpful all the other mums on expatwoman are!

Never, it is not acceptable at all. I think its a cultural thing- alot of ppl i work with are from the same place,a nd they dont see it as a bad thing to comment on if i have put on 1/2 kg or lost them. to me, i find it beyond insulting and private and if this happens in europe or USA, i could have them for sexual harrasment!! My husbands family all do this to me and it drives me fu**ing bonkers! its beyond rude. And, being 5'4 and 54kg sounds healthy to me!!! Ignore them or kick up a fuss. Its not acceptable at all. I am quite talll at 5'10 and so many ppl say im 'very big', this pisses me off. One woman i work with told me my arms werent in proportion to my body. WTF. i was like, sorry, do you see me commenting on you, i mena, i could have an illness for all you blooody know!! Ugh. I hate it. Just try and let it slide but i know how annoying it is. I ignore it now when my inlaws make comments, but god my blood boils. Big hugxxx She said your arms weren't in proportion to your body?!?!?!? I'm gobsmacked!!! Where do these people get off?!?!?!?!?! I've had a few too...fat ankles, chubby, colossal legs (yes, really). I've come to terms with the fact my body will be what it wants to be to a certain degree because of genetics. I can thank my father's side of the family for my 'curvy' legs (haha) and even his side for the cellulite, whilst my beautiful slim mother didn't pass on any of her lucky genes unfortunately! We're all perfectly fine in our own way, and I can't believe how everyone can't understand that.

Hi Ladies, It's been about 2 months since I've arrived in Dubai. I need some suggestions and am sure this is the right forum :) I would like to stay fit for one thing as everyone says you end up gaining weight over here lol so what gym would you recommend to be a member of? Also, is the Entertainer any good? Is it of value to have? Let me know. And lastly, I need to subscribe to a paper, which paper should I go for? There are so many?!? Many thanks!!!! Really appreciate your replies :) Hello & welcome! :) I can't really advise you on the gym situation as we are lucky enough to have one in our building (one of the huge perks of living in Dubai!) and I don't subscribe to a paper so can't advise you on that either, but with the Entertainer books, I can definitely recommend them. Although, it does depend if you're here on your own, or with a partner/friend. Almost every single voucher in the books are '2 for 1' which means they're only worth something if there's 2 or 4 of 6 of you. If you're likely to eat out on your own quite a lot then no, they won't be of any use to you. They're good for when visitors come though. We've got the Family and the Fine Dining one, and we've almost made our money back already (for the cost of the two books) within 3 weeks of January!

Who are these people calling you this?! How rude!! No it is definitely not ok to call somebody 'skeleton', nor is it ok to call someone 'fat' or 'chubby'. In a nutshell, it is never ok to comment on anyone's weight, ever, unless it is a very close relative and you're concerned about their health in a serious way. I find it incredible how people think it's their business to comment on such things. I had a similar thing a while ago when a colleague commented on the fact I'd put on a bit of weight...I went beserk! I did go a bit OTT by involving my manager and his manager, because the way he'd said it was quite slimy and weird, like he found it a turn on (ew), but I just wanted to nip it in the bud there and then and it certainly worked. Ignore these people, whoever they are. Whatever shape body you have - pear, apple, strawberry - it's your body and nobody's elses beeswax. If you're happy in it, then that's all that matters. If I were you, I'd come back with "oh really? I love my body thank you very much. And my husband/boyfriend/significant other does too." <em>edited by amel123 on 22/01/2012</em>

You can stay up there as long as you like. I would suggest the hour before sunset, so you get a good look in daylight (if it's a clear day) and then have a view of the night lights. Oh brilliant! I assumed there'd be a half hour or hour long limit. That's great news, thank you :)

Dubai isnt everyones cup of tea however the positive far outweigh the negatives in relation to the UK I was at home last Summer and watched young girls wearing what can only be described as knickers cavorting around the streets on a weekend being sick in the drains after too much booze ( 10pm at night) an elderly gentleman cutting me up in his car then flicking me the finger as i passed him. Feeing massively intimidated by a group of young guys leering at me whilst waiting for a taxi one evening. Waiting in a shop for the sales assistant to finish the conversation with her friend about last nights antics before serving me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion however if all the OP can come up is those small comments then perhaps the UK is best for her. As i said Dubai isnt for everyone however i know where i would rather be :-) God this is SO true! Whilst I do miss home from time to time, and I'm missing out on lots of family events, I do NOT miss the things you mentioned above! We haven't actually been home yet since moving out here and although I can't wait to see my family and friends again, I am not looking forward to the intimidation youth of London like to give out on public transport and the general feeling of being unsafe. This city has a lot going for it, but yes I suppose, if you're truly so unhappy, it's better not to stay. To Victorian - so sad to read you were unhappy for so long, and I suppose in a way your post is a message to us all - if you're not enjoying life wherever you are and know you would be more useful and also happier with family back home, then make the move sooner rather than later. I will definitely remember this in years to come if we can't decide to stay in Dubai or go back to the UK. All the best with your future and enjoy being back with your family...after all, we only get one of them :)

I'm in agreement with everyone it seems! Hubby & I went for our anniversary in December and it was stunning, really really enjoyed it. Very good value for money I thought, as a huuuuge buffet breakfast was included in the nightly price and the bedrooms were gorgeous, with one of those glass walls between the bedroom and bathroom. Very romantic. So pleased we went there. I'd also echo the comment someone else made about staying away from the nightclub - if that's the same as the shisha bar I wouldn't go that end either. We stayed in the hotel, as opposed to the chalets they have, and we were really happy with the room they gave us :)

Hi Executive Towers dwellers... I am considering ET - hopefully a podium villa but have concerns about 2 things: 1. access in and out - is it a nightmare? did the road changes over the weekend mentioned below help out? 2. surrounding construction - is there always construction going on around or it is not too bad? Thanks Hi, ET has massively improved over the last few weeks - new shops and restaurants opening all the time, and within the next few months it should be a really great place all round. Access in and out is fine really, the road layout changes almost daily but it's not a problem. There is a lot of surrounding construction noise though, I don't know if that would bother you, but it's definitely not a quiet place to live at the moment. The gyms have just opened though so things are looking up :-)

Seeing as we're on the topic of contact lenses and glasses, where do you all buy your contact lens solution? It's a rip off here! 50/60dhs a bottle! Back home you can find it for the equivalent of 30dhs max! where is "home" ?? in the Uk it's 8 to 10 £ a bottle... i buy mine in any pharmacy here for around the same Home is UK, but I used to buy it in Boots or Sainsburys for £5 max.

Yeah beef and mince definitely cheaper than home get it from LuLu mainly the Brazil beef is by far the nicest i personally prefer it to the NZ or Aus beef and its cheaper, the mince you can get the low fat or normal and steaks are far cheaper too for 30 AED you can get 5 really good size peices of steak thats equivalent to 5 gbp last time i was home it was considerably more expensive than that and my MIL said she paid that for 2 small pieces :) That's true, steak is extortionate back home! And not usually very nice!
