I too have a football mad son collecting the same world cup stickers and i took him to Virgin after reading this thread and was able to buy the cards at QR5 per packet. Should you feel like spoiling your son you can of course just buy the whole box!!!

Sherborne is currently full in the elementary school however you may be lucky for senior school. They are still accepting applications for the senior school. www.sherborneqatar.org good luck

Hi there Pilates is available at the Ritz. It is free for members or QR50 for non members. The teacher, Wilson, is fabulous, very patient and explains everything perfectly. His classes get very busy so do book. Classes are every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 10am. They state its for an hour but its never less than 90 mins. I think that there is also pilates at the Intercon, again the lady Karen Porter is a fab teacher. Not sure of her days and times although i have attended her lessons before i joined the Ritz. Hope this helps

Try the Singer shop in the souk which is next to Al Baddi music shop. I have purchased wool there and there was quite a range available from the cheap nasty nylon to a far more superior quality. Probably not a huge John Lewis range but there was definitely wool worth buying. Good luck

Hi there The new spanish school opening up is called SEK. Its an IB school, the curriculum will be delivered in english and spanish as the second language. As mentioned before here, school places are in short supply and its a case of just getting your child into any school that will take them, then possibly moving them to a more favoured school. Good luck!

There is a huge volume of traffic and both Sherborne and DC West Bay are very far from Ain Khaled. Should you wish to take places at either of the said schools then i would seriously reconsider the area that you choose to live in. You will be spending hours driving as well as pulling out your hair and seriously hating Qatar due to the time you will be spending in your car!!! You could consider living near Landmark or Gharaffa for easy access to Sherborne. There are plenty of decent compounds at reasonable prices in that area. For DC West Bay you may want to consider West Bay, West Bay Lagoon, The Pearl as well as the Landmark, Al Markiya and Gharaffa area. I live in West Bay Lagoon with a child in Sherborne and my school run is 30 mins each way! Unfortunately it is a fact of life here that there is very little joy in school runs so the closer you can live to the school the easier your life will be. Distances may look close on the maps but the time spent due to the volume of traffic makes for a very long journey. Hope this may be of some help.

Since ive had children in DESS the schools fees have increased each year whereas they havent in Sherborne at all. DESS is still quite a lot more reasonable than many other schools in Doha but until now we have no idea how much the school fees will be increased. Doha College has guaranteed school places for i believe 60 students from DESS for year 2014 and 44 for year 2015 after that there are no guaranteed places. The new Doha College West Bay campus will not be expanding to full capacity for year 5 & 6 this year and DESS has pledged a financial commitment to help DCWB to offset their decision to allocate school spaces for DESS students for the next 2 years. DESS has effectively "bought" school places for their students and this will probably be reflected in their increased school fees review. Land has not been allocated for DESS to build a secondary school as yet but they are working on a solution. This is Doha and who knows how long that could take. Sherborne was supposed to open their new campus in 2014 and they still dont have land! Dont hold youre breath!!! This is a great solution for those parents that have students presently in DESS year 4 & 5 however there is at present no long term solution. I am still jumping ship when i can to Sherborne!!! As i said before children in 2 different schools is a huge logistical nightmare. i hope that this latest information has shed some light on the uncertainly of the immediate future of DESS.

Hi there i have children in both DESS and Sherborne and both in my option are great schools. I find juggling the children in 2 different schools a huge logistical nightmare and this September both schools will have very similiar finishing times making school pick ups even more of a headache. I was planning to leave my DESS child to finish his elementary schooling in DESS but now with senior school places being in very short supply i intend to move him to Sherborne as soon as i can to guarantee him a place in a secondary school. Neither DESS or Sherborne give sibling priority anymore, although i believe, both schools will look at the sibling favourably should they be on the waiting list and pass the entrance exams. DESS is a very happy school with a lovely campus, there is quite a lot of sports clubs going on with the added bonus of a swimming pool. I have no real problems with the school although i do wish they would provide hot school lunches like Sherborne does. I can not see any miracle being performed in the immediate future to provide DESS with secondary campus or a feeder school for DESS students. Hopefully i am wrong but its a big risk to take if you have a child that will be going into year 5 or 6 this September. Very little information is being given to DESS parents at the moment, possibly because they really cant say but alot of parents are very unsettled and there will be a lot of children leaving to go to the new DC West Bay campus. Sherborne too has many positive attributes, i have a child in the senior school and the teaching this year has been great and i can really see huge improvements in the school and it seems to be going from strength to strength. I couldnt really tell you much about the Prep school but many parents seem happy with the school. The school campus is temporary and until now the land promised by the SEC has not been forthcoming and therefore the school has not been able to move in the direction that they would like through no fault of their own. There is talk of taking Sherborne students by bus to Al Rayyan sports club (5 min drive away) as an after school activity which would solve the problem of no swimming pool. It is a new school but i am happy with the school this year and the communication is great, the senior school headmaster is very approachable and will always make time to meet with parents. Both schools are great and whatever you choose im sure you will be happy but for me having children in 2 schools is far from ideal. Good luck!!!

Hi there There are not, as far as I'm aware any compounds next to Sherborne, pls correct me if I'm wrong! However there are plenty of quite good ones in Gharaffa which is about a 10 min drive to Sherborne. Behind the Lulu supermarket there are plenty of compounds one of the better ones is AL JAZI compound,it's a brand new compound with small back yards and fab facilities, including a gym, indoor sports hall that's huge, outdoor pool and outdoor football/sports pitch. Not sure of the contact number there but it's right behind the big palace on the small roundabout by the Gulf English school roundabout. Another great compound is AL WADI compound, also in Gharaffa, again these houses have small back gardens with real grass! Good sized pool, club house and a great shaded kids park. It's located off the Shammal road along side the highway. There's yet another huge shopping mall being built in front of the compound. Sorry I'm just not gold at directions! There are lots of compounds in that area and a 10 min drive to Sherborne as long as you take the cut through road across the desert. I am more than happy to show you this route to school one morning. The road up to Sherborne school is a nightmare, uncompleted road works and boy racers!!! Hope that this helps you.

I have a daughter in Sherborne and we are living in West Bay Lagoon, the trip takes between 25-30mins. She has a student in her class that lives at the Pearl. I take a short cut to Sherborne from the back of education city housing that shaves a good 10 mins of my trip. I have a friend that has her 3 year old in Sherborne preschool. They start at 3 years old should you want to put your child in a British school. I have another child in a different British school that is much closer to home but with the traffic it takes the same time and sometimes longer than the Sherborne school run. School places are very difficult to come by and many of us mums do quite a drive to get our kids to school, unfortunately that's the norm here. It might be worth doing an early morning dummy school run to all the schools you are considering! <em>edited by dottymum01 on 31/01/2013</em>

Hi there I live at West Bay Lagoon which is about a 5 minute drive from the Pearl. I have a son in DESS and leave my house at about 6.45/6.50am everyday and get there in 20-25 minutes. It's any enough drive but I do take a cut through short cut that shaves a few minutes off. More than happy to show you the way should you want.

I have finally gotten around to ordering Uggs online. For those CHAVs or CHITs (CHAVs in training!) out there, the USA Uggs site is much cheaper than the UK site. Plenty of non CHAVs styles to choose from too. My 12 year old daughter has gone for the classic Ugg boots again and I myself have gone for some gorgeous biker boots, leather, waterproof, sheepskin lined boots that will keep my feet dry and warm. They look like they have a good grip on the soles which will be handy for catching my daughter when she slips over in hers!!! There are plenty of sites out there selling bargain priced boots but I assume are fake because the price is so low, I'm my opinion if you have a shop and ship account with Aramex go straight to www.uggaustralia.com site.

I have never said that Uggs are all the rage in the UK (pls check my original post for clarification). I have lived most of my life in Beirut and the fashion there is probably somewhat different to that of the UK. CHAVS as described in the entertaining posts here don't exist, we'll not to my knowledge. People that wear Burberry in Lebanon for example are usually quite well to do where as in the UK I do believe they fall into the Chav category. So therefore not only is my 12 year old daughter a chav but my younger son must be a Lebanese male Chav too!!! Of course people are entitled to their opinions but back to my original post I only ever wanted to buy Uggs for a trip to Europe to keep my feet warm. Differently nationalities class things differently. Everyone is welcome to laugh, life is too short to throw insults around, Lets just all sit back and chill!!!! Or rather pop on some Ugg boots/slippers and keep warm!!!!!!!!!!!! Any other fashion tips ladies??????

Dear Ladies All i ever wanted was warm, dry feet! Thankfully my 12 year daughter is too young to be a CHAV according to the info generously supplied info by hinze57. Unfortunately on her school ski trip it was rather too cold to be dressed as described manner in the photo, it was a chilly minus 17 last Feb in Austria. Her feet were kept surprisingly warm and DRY in her Uggs as i had sprayed them with a waterproof spray. No doubt with the newly supplied info i can ensure that on this years tour of Europe to Switzerland, France and Italy she is decked out CHAV style with her newly styled CHAV mother in Uggs in tow!!! I shall however endeavour try not to disappoint and march around Lagoona mall CHAV style in my Uggs, along with my chav daughter in training, once they arrive here. No doubt that CHAVs are far and few between here in paradise!!! This thread has indeed made me giggle and has been an education for someone that only ever wanted warm and dry feet!! Keep those CHAV tips rolling in and i shall in my ignorance wear my slippers out!!! Many thanks to those kind ladies that supplied all the entertaining and educational info!!!!

Hi there I hope there are some parents with middle school aged children in ACS that can give me some feed back on this school. Whilst I've heard plenty of good things about the elementary I've yet to hear a thing about the middle school. If you could share with me any positives or negatives, id be very grateful. Also if there are a large number of native English speakers in the middle school. How big is the middle school, etc My daughter is in grade 7 so I'd love to hear from any parents with the same Many thanks in advance

Hi Raahatd I have children in both DESS and Sherborne and live in West Bay Lagoon. The drive to DESS takes about 25 minutes, there are a lot of traffic lights on the school run as well as 2 roundabouts to navigate I leave home about 6.40/45am everyday and usually arrive about 7.05am. The school drive home seems to take longer for some reason but once y get over the first roundabout it's a quick run. Regarding Sherborne, the traffic is once you get to the road of the school as there are about 5 schools very close to each other along the same road. The road works are horrific on that same road too. If I do the Sherborne school run I leave home at 6.30am and usually reach school at 6.55am, my daughter loves to arrive early!!! The roundabout at Gharaffa can be very hit and miss, sometimes you sail though other times you can sit there for ages, there are thankfully no traffic lights on the way and it's a very easy drive as you're going in the opposite direction of the traffic. Once the road works are completed near the school it will be a very easy run to school, fingers crossed! Park House is really far away, not a drive I'd want to attempt from west bay but maybe someone can correct me. Good luck and hope

I found that I too had too much time on my hands here but have taken up hobbies that I would never have considered in my previous life prior to Doha. I actually quite enjoy some of them too and my friends from my former life can't believe that I have such hobbies now!! Dear Frazzle I'm living in West Bay Lagoon and although I am fortunate enough to have what is considered a large garden here in Doha. I would say you could live here quite happily without any garden at all because of the abundance of parks and landscaping here. Temperatures also tend to be quite a lott cooler here too compared to the Al Waab area. At least 6 or 7 degrees. There are beautiful green parks between every 2 streets providing childrens play equipment, a tennis court and a beach. I actually feel like I'm anywhere but Doha when I come home. The Lagoon area is great for walking and biking around too. At the park where I live there are many children that come out to play in the afternoons and it is really quite sociable. I have quite a long school drive with my 2 children but im happy to do the drive as its well worth living here. When your children are of school age you might want to consider where you live as the is a lot of traffic all over Doha. Al Rayyan village is in a very central location with easy access to all areas of Doha and all the villas will be all shiny and new with top notch facilities. Good luck in making your choice.

I have a daughter in Sherborne senior school and also going into year 8 this year. The biggest problem with the senior school is the lack of a senior school building! There is actually a building and a very nice one too that they students moved Into albeit very briefly and out again as certain red tape issues were pending. The lack of classrooms was an issue due to lack of space, and students were often left looking for their teachers and their classrooms. They seem to be plodding on quite nicely now. Unfortunately now we have been informed that the head of senior school studies is leaving and in my opinion he was an valuable asset to the school. Let's hope we get someone else that will be able to fill his shoes as well! My experience with the school has not been a negative one. Communication has been brilliant, that is in my experience, I can't speak for other parents. The Arabic department has been appalling but if you're not an arabic speaker then that won't bother you. We have been promised a new improved Arabic department for September with teachers coming from the UK. Fingers crossed. There is no such thing as the perfect school here in Doha. One parent will be thrilled with a school and another pulling their hair out over it! Please contact me if you would like to discuss further.

Hi there i was at katara beach recently and the dress code for ladies is that you should wear longish shorts and have your chest and shoulders covered, ie cycling type shorts and a rash top. i ended up staying in my kaftan and leggings for most of the day. There were ladies wearing just one piece swim suits with shorts on. its is a lovely beach with plenty to do for kids there including water toys and a park, they now sell drinks from a little kiosk at the back of the beach. Lacking in changing facilities and toilets. you have to leave the beach and cross the road again!

OMG those timings for the school run to Doha College are sooooo early! But i guess if you have other places to go then maybe you need to leave early. I have a friend that has a child in DC and leaves at 6.20am/6.25am to go to DC only because she has to go to DESS straight afterwards. I think DC starts at 7.10am and DESS at 7.20am (so early compared to UK) . Getting onto the D-ring road can be time consuming sometimes but other than that its an easy enought school run but id say it definately needs at least 30-40mins from what ive hear. Think that if you have the option to live in WBL and do the daily drive to DC then id seriously consider it. Hope that this helps.

Have you tried the new ACS, its an IB/American system school that opened this year. The school already has 3 campus in England and is an established schoo in the UK. English is the main language of instruction and it has an iternational student body. Its located just behind Lulu Gharrafa. I have met several people with their children attending this school, one of then Australian, and they were very impressed indeed. www.acs-schools.com/doha Good luck as getting your kids into a school is really stressful here.

Hi there Well ive been living in West Bay for 3 years and West Bay Lagoon for a year. At the moment there seem to be a lot of FOR RENT signs up around West Bay Lagoon, its worth having a drive around. There are quite a few villas near by for rent over here at hte North Gate entrance. All the villas in our compound are full at the moment but people come and go very quickly in this country so im more than happy to pass on the compound managers details if you would like. For me its the greenery and being close to the beach as well as having kids that run really run around that will always keep me in West Bay Lagoon whilst im in Doha. Let me know if you'd like anymore info.

Hi there Im living at West Bay Lagoon and i have 2 children. We love it here, the children often go outside to play in the park in the afternoons homework permitting! We are on a compound where there are a lot of children and the park is often very busy. I cant speak for other compounds in West Bay Lagoon but i find it very friendly here and there always seems to be someone around. Its also great for walking here, tennis and swimming in the lagoon, if youre brave enough!!! It is very green here, real grass and lots of it too!!! Very shaded parks with lots of trees. I personally wouldnt want to live anywhere else now that i live here! Our compound will be doing trick or treat for Halloween, cant speak for others though. There is traffic in the mornings but find me somewhere in Doha where there isnt! My school commute is about 25-30 minutes to DESS and to Sherborne about 35-45mins but that should be less soon once the Sherborne approach road is sorted out. Regarding gyms and classes, you can go to some of the hotels and pay per class, QIPCO compound has a pay per class boot camp thats good. There are some pay per class classes at the Pearl too. Fitness First is located at City Center and their month fee includes all the classes and use of the gym but you now have to pay for parking. I dont feel that West Bay Lagoon is far from anything at all, Landmark is only 10 mins in one direction and City Center in the other, the new Lagoona Mall is 2 minutes away and a Carrefour is opening up there shortly. Only been in to this mall once and there were some shops open and lots more opening soon. The Pearl has an abundance of restaurants and high end shops. I really dont know Al Waab area so cant really make any comments about the area but it takes about 20-25mins to reach Villagio from here in non peak traffic. Hope this helps, please feel free to ask any more questions that you may have.
