Dr Sigrun from Blue Oasis Vets in the agreebs uses an integrated approach - using homeopathy, western, and a combination. I recommend her.

I like the drink coasters that are hand made tiny carpets. They come in a variety of designs. I often take them as gifts and they are quite novel and also functional. A gift box of dates from Bateel are also great but expensive so it would depend upon your budget. Calligraphy pendants/ cuff links if you want to give a very personal gift are also nice.

Three are many volunteer groups in the UAE - elderly, disabled, poor, animals that are always looking for new helpers, eg: Red Crescent, Riding for the Disabled, volunteers UAE, etc. There are also different classes she could join, art, music, language. I know people generally say there is nothing for their kids to do here but my kids are very busy. There are activities if you look around and are prepared to drive them across town regularly.

Azdhu, I googled to see if I could find the article I had read/heard about a few weeks ago, so I could link it for the OP, I couldn't find the recent one, however, there were lots of other reports going back a few years, so prescription meds going out of stock here seems to be an annual occurrence. On a side note, Calpol cannot be found here anymore either. Thanks for the info

I have always used and recommended Mukhtar Certains - they have a good range of quality fabrics at good prices. They relocated in Deira, on the left hand side of the road into Naïf Souq. They are a small strip shop but well worth a look. They have a good range of accessories also.

I think there is a general lack of supply of HRTs, anti depressants and other strictly prescription meds etc. - maybe they are waiting for a shipment. The medication I take is out of stock UAE wide too. I am now 1 week without it. I have seen this happen on the supermarket shelves over the years - out of stock of certain items for weeks waiting for a container to arrive. But, I have never seen this with medications before. It is a big worry with the anti depressants as they are so addictive and you need to wean yourself off them. Let's hope the container arrives soon.

I would tell her that life is much shorter than it feels at that moment - go ahead and take a risk, believe in yourself and your capabilities, don't listen those around you want to keep you down. Be your own person!

I always thinks dogs have a great sense of people and their characters. I am sure the dog felt that in some way the driver was threatening "his pack" so did what comes naturally, and bit the driver. I think the driver definitely needs to get a tentnus shot but you also need to counsel the driver on how to act around the dog. Often these workers are not used to small yappy dogs and become frightened quickly and will often run which just incites the dog to chase and sometimes bite. I think you need to always be careful of small dogs around small kids - often kids can be rather rough and hurt the dogs who will react, often with a nip. I am sure it is not a general trend in the dog but rather the dog doing his job - protecting his family. A little paksheesh would not go astray for the driver, too - just to "calm the waters".

Why not just contact the UK consulate in Dubai - they should be able to answer all your questions accurately and quickly.

I am so sorry to hear you are not happy with your MacBook. I am a recent covert to Mac and just love it - I have my iPad, iPhone and MacBook all connect through iCloud. Currently, I am having loads of fun exploring iBooks and throwing together a few small books for work. Once you get used to it, you will never look back. You just need someone to show you.

They are called underskirts here. They are cheap at Lulu's. They come in black and white and some odd colours and in all sizes small to extra big!

It absolutely infuriates me beyond belief. It is incredibly rude and unprofessional. I have, on occasions, asked salon staff to stop chatting and concentrate on what they are doing. I can't relax when they are chatting with each other.

Oh my goodness! When I go off on vacation by myself and leave my husband here, he is hardly at home. He comes home to shower and change clothes. Luckily the maid is there to attend to the house, washing, ironing, pets etc. My husband is off all hours with his friends, BBQing, drinking coffee and smoking sheesha. When I get home he is so happy to see me - he is exhausted and welcomes my "strict house rules" - (come home at a decent time, eat good food, etc) as he calls them. Hahaha. I do think eastern men respond better the house rules than western men, however. I actually think it is good to go off sometimes and leave them to cope - because, of course, they cannot!!! It makes them appreciate everything we do for them all the better.

Security at our gatehouse are asking visitors to deposit their ID cards with security while they're in our community. Are they allowed to do this? My children's school security insists all visitors, including parents, deposit some type of ID when visiting the school. I don't know if it is legal, but it is a good Ida for a school, I think. It seems a bit extreme for a residential compound, though. edited by Azdhu on 15/04/2014

Help! My little one emptied my entire nivea lotion all over my new bedding! I need a coin laundry like the ones they have in the states, where u throw the blanket into a huge washing machine and pay coins to get it cleaned. Do they have something like that in dubai? I need to clean it today before it stains and stays !!! Not that I know of, but, just take the bedding to any laundry and they will do if for you.

Trying to get school shoes here is always a nightmare...! I've got them the last few times from Stitches on Beach Road (Clarks) so may be worth trying there... Clarke seem to have the best range although sizes are still a problem, even there.

All four of my kids needed their afternoon sleeps right up to when they started school. And then, sometimes they would sleep when they got home from school in the early yeas. I actually found if they didn't get the afternoon sleep they didn't sleep well at night. I think routine is so important for kids. My two youngest, 8 and 9 while they don't have afternoon sleeps anymore, are fed, bathed and in bed by 8pm every night. They fall asleep immediately every night. Really, I think if they had the opportunity, an afternoon sleep would still be welcome for them, but, with school, homework, etc there is sadly no time for rests during the week.

Will you go alone? Just wondering about the language thing. TBH, you will be sitting around and talking most of the time so it helps to either go with someone you know (who speaks English) or sit with ladies who do. There may or may not be entertainment/music so really you'll spend time talking and watching all the beautiful ladies in their dresses until the bride arrives. Then they will serve food and much later the groom with arrive with a handful of his close male relatives. You may be surprised at this stage to find all those lovely dresses suddenly covered up with abayas and shaylas when the boys arrive! It would not be inappropriate for you to take your daughter or close female relative or friend with you - at least then you will have someone with whom you can enjoy the spectacle. Otherwise, you will be very lonely and bored. Wear your BEST!!!! The gowns etc will surprise you - it will be spectacular!!

I've been to a few Qatari weddings, and it's important for the women to have an Abaya or some kind of cover for when the groom and father make their entrance. If this is also how it's done in the UAE, be sure to bring an appropriate cover. For the rest of the evening when it is only women, no modesty required! You will not be expected to cover when the groom and his family arrives unless, of courses, you are Muslim.

It dies take a while here, especially if you aren't working. Try the EW coffee mornings - it is a good start. Or why not take a short course in something? At least you will meet people with similar interests that way.

And use emla.. do not forget the emla in the bikini area.. I fully wax monthly and I also use elma creme in the bikini area - it reduces the pain considerably. The first time, it will hurt, but as you continue to get it done regularly, the pain will reduce each time. It is not that bad. These girls do this many times a day so they are using to seeing all sorts of things. Don't worry that you will be baring all. Only you are embarrassed, not the girl.

I have flown Gulf air several times and as has been stated - you get what you pay for service wise, however, on one trip, Bahrain to Amman, there was a security problem, a young man panicked and decided he wanted to get off the plane mid flight and tried to open the rear door. The cabin staff handled the situation quickly and efficiently with minimum noise and comotion, the plane continued to its destination where federal police met the aircraft and took over. The cabin crew were to be congratulated for their response - obviously well trained for emergency procedures.

Pastels in the Ritz Carelton is great and also the salon in the Carleton in Deira. The salon in the Carelton in Deira is just as good, I think, but much cheaper.

From Mirdif, Nad al Sheba are probably your nearest and best "good" vets but if you can bear the hike, and with a tricky (and skin related conditions nearly always are) diagnosis, it might be worth it, try Blue Oasis at the Green Community. Drs Dieter and Wolf are superb, the best I nave encountered in four countries. We also take our beloved pet to blue Oasis, Dr Dieter. We are very happy with his treatment and also attitude towards our pet

Not sure about your budget, but if you want to buy a pair of v.stylish/flat shoes with v.low heels ... Tod's is a great option. They are pricey -- to begin with -- but they last for years. I have Tod's loafers in my cupboard that are still looking good and going strong 10 years after purchase. So comfortable as well. Gucci are also great for loafers but of late, the styles/designs are a bit too non-classic for me. That said, the chocolate loafers I bought in London in 2003 are still going strong. :) Pro-tip: I know there are no sales on at the moment, but Tod's do have regular discounts. They even do them during DSS. You might not know it, but a lot of shops don't *do* the festival per se because they don't want to pay the Municipality for the privilege of putting on a sale just for the sake of a few cheap posters and inclusion in the advertising material. They have the sales anyway but don't advertise the fact, in other words. :) I agree. They are good value despite the initial outlay. They last for years, wear well, are stylish, and look great.

WOW! That's shocking. I got his name and number from here a while ago and we took our kids out in the desert with him last weekend. Have to say we had a great time and had no complaints. Maybe you should call him to complain about the driver - I would definitely complain!!!!!! It is unacceptable!!!!!!!!!! New username and 1st post is a defensive post. Relatively new: October, and not first post but mostly just looking. Actually don't quite get your point?
