A South African friend recently came to visit me and she arranged the visa online without any problems. I sent her an invitation letter stating she will be staying with me and that the reason for the visit was to visit me. In this case the business can give the colleague an invitation letter stating the reason for the visit. The hotel booking will probably also be necessary. Rather give too much information than too little with the online application. In the past the hotel arranged the visit visa for me before I moved here, but I don't know if it is still done as it is quite a few years ago.

Try Betterlife. When we were looking for an electric stove we could only find freestanding electric stoves, but Betterlife had both.

I can recommend Dr. Thomas Berger at Bodyworx. I was really happy with the service and treatment I received from him. It is in Abu Dhabi so you don't have to go to Dubai.

A good place to look for cheap crochet supplies is Daiso. You can also find supplies at most Lulu Hypermarkets. I personally love the Daiso crochet hooks, it is much nicer to use than the more expensive hooks from other suppliers.

You just have to make sure first that you can do it at the Oman Border. I was under the impression that you have to come in by air to change from visit to residence visa. I may be wrong, but it won't hurt to find out first.

We were in a similar situation last year. The visa was expiring while we were supposed to be in Europe (2 different countries). We applied for a new visa beforehand, but didn't hear anything from VFS again. Two days before our travel was suppose to start, we phoned VFS about it and they referred us to the embassy. The embassy informed us that they can't issue a new visa while the old one was still valid and that you can travel on the old one that was expiring during the travel period. They were holding the passport with the new visa back until the old one expired, that was the reason we didn't get it back. We didn't have any problems, but then again, it was last year, so can't say for sure it is still valid.

Good luck! I am searching for Fray check for months now and it is always the same answer: 'Sorry Mam, it is out of stock.' Even Craftland doesn't have it for months now. I am getting desperate. Classic Quilts offered me something similar, but from experience I know it doesn't work as well as Fray Check. I hope someone has the answer to where I can find it.

Dr Badsha is still in Jumeirah Beach Road at the Jumeirah Beach Plaza. I am very happy with Dr Badsha and she is (or was at least in the past) working closely with a very good physiotherapist in the same building. I can really recommend her and Marcel Schmidt the physio. Good luck, I hope she could help.

I know people here who had breast cancer here and had their treatment here, so it shouldn't be a problem to get your treatment and check ups. I can't help with where and with whom, as I arrived here after I finished my treatment and I go back home yearly for my annual check ups. When I have a concern in between I just go to my gynecologist and she just refers me to the correct clinic or tests if necessary.

You have to be married to get a residence visa, unless you also get a job where the company is sponsoring you. Just keep in mind you can't live together legally if you are not married, even if you have a residence visa through a company.

If you are looking for a South African trained physio as RuthM suggested, I can highly recommend Marcel Schmidt at PhysioArt. He helped me with an elbow problem I had for more than a year to get me free of pain again. You can visit their website to get an idea if he will be able to help you. What I like about Marcel is that he has a sport and physio background. http://physioart-uae.com/

I am sorry that no one responded to your query. Unfortunately the Abu Dhabi board is very quiet and the fact that a lot of ladies are away for the summer also doesn't help. Unfortunately I am useless with regards to the questions you asked. I will try to answer some. 1. http://www.expatwoman.com/abudhabi/monthly_FAQs_Maids_6205.aspx 5. I use the doctors at: http://www.hsmc.ae/ The dentist I use is at: http://www.britishdentalclinic.ae/ I can't claim the above places are the best, just that I use them. Apparently Burjeel Hospital is very popular, but I have never used them (or any other hospital in Abu Dhabi for that matter). 6. I am still searching.... 7. Lulu's and Abu Dhabi Co-op are reasonable, but I prefer to use Geant as it is more convenient for me. Spinneys and Waitrose are both very good but expensive. I don't have any information on the rest. I can't claim my advice will help a lot, but I hope it helps at least a bit.

I can't help with the accommodation in Johannesburg, but just have very important information regarding the children. Just make sure you have unabridged birth certificates for the children with you otherwise they will not even let the children on to the plane. A lot of people made the very expensive mistake not to have it on them and the children were not allowed to fly.

Thank you for your replies. He would be working as an inflight chef, if he went out on his own everything would be paid for by them! But obviously we want to do this together, we are unsure at the moment of if they provide an allowance? This is something that will need to be confirmed before he signs on the dotted line. Is it true that rent has to be paid in 6/12 months at a time? Katie xx Unfortunately it is true. We are 5 years in the UAE and we always had to pay for twelve months in advance. There may be places that you can have more payments per year, but it is not the norm.

I have a friend who does custom made silver jewellery. You can find her at different markets and she is also on Little Majlis. She was at the Marina Souq market yesterday (maybe Scotsgirl123 saw her work yesterday). She has a Facebook page you can visit. She is in Abu Dhabi but do markets in Dubai. You can contact her through her facebook page. I don't get to my post box often enough to use my own. I guess I will have to send it to the post office here in Abu Dhabi and hope I get it.

If you don't want to trek to Satwa you can always go to Craftland in Town Centre. You can find basically everything there. The quality is better, but it is MUCH more expensive than Satwa. For presser feet it depends on your machine where you will find it, for example, for a Bernina you have to go to Classic Quilts but for a Pfaff you go to Craftland etc.

Amongst my cocktail of drugs, I take medication for thinning my blood. They are prescribed by my consultant at the hospital three months at a time but rather than buy all my medications at once, I buy as I need them. My hospital is a thirty minute drive away so I usually go to a Life Pharmacy, or the one in Spinney's on Al Wasl, take the necessary box with me and they either have the same one or a suitable alternative. I'm not saying this is the right thing for anyone else to do but it works for me. edited by amelia on 20/01/2015 I would be careful to name the pharmacy as it is illegal for any pharmacy except a hospital pharmacy to have Warfarin on their premises. The pharmacies told me that the possible consequences are too severe to take a chance, therefore I always has to go to Emirates Hospital.

Oh no - so sad. Things didn't look good for him from the start. So young. Sad for his family and friends and the wider cricket community. I also feel for the young bowler - a heavy burden to carry. I hope he is supported by Cricket Australia to get through this difficult time. I agree. Feelings of guilt can ruin his life and his sporting career.

Saadiyat Beach Residences are very family friendly. The pool area is very nice with a nice big pool for adults and a good kiddies pool. There is also a nice play area for small children. It is a bit isolated, you will need your own transport. There is not always taxis and there is a bus every hour. Although there is construction in the area going on, you are not in the middle of it. I am barely aware of it. The community is completed with no construction where we are.

If you want to buy quite a bit I suggest you go to Deira to Abdul Razzaq Mohiddin Abdulla Trading Est. Wholesale & Supply Store. (https://www.facebook.com/armadxb). It is a wholesaler and their prices are a fraction of the prices at Craftland, but you have to buy a roll. edited by Lettie on 10/11/2014

I am still waiting for my passport I applied for from here, so I won't hold my breath. A sure way to get it fast is to use these lawyers in SA as discussed for attestation for documents: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=183944 . We used them for attestation of documents and they were really efficient. I am sure they will be able to do the birth certificates also. It is only going to cost you a lot more than the consulate unfortunately. :(

There are a few places around where you can buy sewing supplies, but I can't really give you directions as I don't know if i will find it myself again! The one easiest to find is next to Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre. The name of the store is something like 'Malik & Shaheed Store'. You can find basically everything there. Unfortunately not all the better brands I am used to, but reasonable quality. I saw Gutermann thread and buttons at Stitch In Time in the World Trade Centre Mall, but at horrendous prices. If you want high end brands I can recommend Craftland in Dubai. For materials you can find a big variety at the Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre. Apparently Cairo Fabrics is also good but I haven't been there yet. I found this map to the shop, but it is not very clear to me, but may give you an indication of where it is: foursquare.com/v/malik--shaheed-stores/4ee46ffb775b86c404372e76 edited by Lettie on 23/09/2014 edited by Lettie on 23/09/2014

I am also new to AD (6 months) so I can only give limited advice. Depending on your budget, I can recommend Saadiyat for easy walking. Around Saadiyat Beach Residences Community is a walking path with lots of greenery around you that takes about 15 min fast walking to complete. Outside the community you can walk on the side walks next to the streets between the villas for as long and as far as you want. Regarding the classes I think the easiest way to do it legally is to connect to one of the studios to give classes. I hope someone else can give better advice regarding the classes.

I can only answer no. 3: For buying a sewing machine it depends on what you are looking for. You can buy basic sewing machines from any big store like Carrefour etc. For more advanced machines you can look at Craftland: http://www.mycraftland.com/ in Town Centre and Classic Quilts: http://classicquiltsdubai.com/ in Jumeirah Plaza. For sewing supplies you can find about anything at Craftland, but they are a bit pricy. For much cheaper products you can go to Satwa or the Haberdashery Souk in Old Dubai, but for not always the best quality and it requires a lot more effort than just going to Craftland. For material it depends on what you are looking for. I personally like to got to Al Ghurair Mall to the textile shops there. It is more expensive than the Satwa shops, but on average the quality is better. Otherwise you can go to Satwa or Meena Bazaar. In this heat I would definitely go to Al Ghurair for the convenience factor alone.

I saw something in Craftland in Town Centre regarding labels from Brother at some stage. I don't know if it is what you are looking for, it may be something completely different, but it may be worth to have a look there as it is in Jumeirah.
