We are going to be in Joburg for a graduation ceremony mid Feb. Afterwards, we wanted to spend 3 or 4 nights at a nearby game reserve (no more than 3 hour drive). I have looked at different options and found Pilansberg and Madikwe sound good and not to far away. It will be my husband and I and our 6 month old baby (6 months by then).

We have done safaris before in Tanzania and Kenya so not fazed if we can't do one with a small baby. Instead we thought maybe a balloon ride, helicopter ride or even elephant safari.

I have looked at Sun City but find it's tacky like Atlantis here in Dubai so don't want to venture there. Any ideas where to stay (no more than US $300 a night including both husband and I).

Suggestions appreciated.

Hi NS, I think Pilanesberg is definitely your best bet. Bakubung or Kwa Maritane offer lovely accommodation... Google them for contact details and book directly with them if you can. There are cheaper resorts in the park but definitely not as nice. You can drive yourself around the park and will almost certainly see some nice wildlife, I'm pretty sure they have the big 5. There is an information centre and restaurant located central to the park where you can get lunch while you watch animals at the waterhole, we saw antelope and giraffe and warthog there last time! Sun Ciity is worth a visit for a day if you feel like doing something different, or maybe going out for a meal there. It's quite fun but if you just want to enjoy your time in the bush that is great too. You can do Balloon trips and Elephant Safari in the Magaliesberg, which is about half way between Joburg and Pilanesberg. You could do one of these as a day trip from Joburg or maybe stop on your way to Pilanesberg. Check these sites: http://www.magaliesburg.co.za/index.html www.balloon.co.za Actually, they probably do helicopter rides and maybe balloons as well from Sun City, but I'm not sure - worth searching as I'm sure that would be absolutely beautiful. I'm quite jealous now ;) I'm from Joburg and one of my favourite things ever was a weekend away to Pilanesberg. :) If you need any more advice let me know! edited by mk-in-dubai on 29/12/2011

Hi NinaSimone, Here are a few websites that you can look at: www.portfoliocollection.co.za www.wheretostay.co.za Personally I can recommend Kwa Maritane just near Sun City. Reasonably priced and family friendly. Quite a lot of things to do in the area too.
