We are Indians, we live in Dubai as a family with me and my husband earning a decent income. We decided to migrate to Australia and got our Australian PR approved. Aussie ladies in this forum, please advice me how life with a 3yo kid in Australia is. Any tips on job hunting in Australia. Would you recommend me to quit my job, move and look for a job in Oz or find a job and then move. Does Oz provide a friendly working environment for working mums? Your advice would help me decide on next steps.

Hey mialee77, replied you on a previous thread but just thought i would paste it here to give others the info as well: I moved from NYC to Singapore a while back. The shipping company we contacted was Moovaz - it's not a big company, but i decided to just go with it. I knew i made the right choice when the salesperson (Jerry) contacted me and tried to tailor the whole relocation process to my needs (i.e. budget, explaining volume & waiting time). Basically it's about 6-7k for a full container load (FCL) but would vary according to destination and if you opt for groupage service. The service was excellent! I highly recommend them.

Andrea_m, we did it by ourselves, not through agent. It was straight forward. The Australian immigration website gives all the details. If any questions, they respond within a day's time.

It's great that you were able to get PR, as this can make the job hunt easier. As far as overseas being more troublesome for employers, your PR will be a real bonus (as for many jobs you won't get past the first stage unless your visa is in order). But in my area we would probably look to interview local candidates first because it would be difficult to arrange a video interview and we also need people who are familiar with local legislation/guidelines etc. I imagine that in your skilled field though, companies would be prepared to make the effort for the right candidate. I would have thought many manufacturing jobs were concentrated in Western Australia and Queensland where the mines are, but Melbourne is a major metropolitan centre, so I'm sure you will find something there. I wholeheartedly agree with what has been said about the quality of our education system. While naturally the quality varies, I went to a well-regarded public high school in regional Australia and I, and many of my friends, subsequently attended the major unis like University of Melbourne/Sydney and University of New South Wales (and got good jobs). My husband attended a private school and I outperformed him academically ;) 100,000k single salary in Sydney is do-able but with two kids I think it would be tight. Rent is a killer here, and public transport is getting more expensive (although for the first time in years fuel is cheaper than $1AUD/L). Above all the quality of life here is fantastic. I love being able to go walking/camping/swimming in the weekend. It's going to be hard for me to adjust to Dubai, I think!! Best of luck whatever you decide to do. Edited to add - part time jobs (family friendly) are a also pretty common here, particularly in the public sector. Thanks for the guidance littlepenguin. Yes, $100,000 is a good salary for Melbourne, but in Sydney rent and living expenses double up. Schools and Universities have good infrastructure and life is more social. DD made good friends in our locality and she keeps asking me if we are going back to meet them. I have decided to move ASAP. Just looking forward.

@Comp99, Congrats! I was in Melbourne with husband in New Year's eve. Its a fantastic city. Lucky You! I personally loved Australia a lot. We travelled around Victoria. Fanatastic people and discipline. Loved the schools, public transport and daily life there. Unfortunately my move is still unplanned as my husband had to shift his base to Sydney from January on. He keeps telling me every day how much he misses Melbourne! Plan your move and stay in touch. Would love to hear from you even after you move.

Thanks Siennachick and AdventurerB. You are giving me a big reason to move. Free education. I am sick and tired of paying a fortune of my earnings for my kid's pre-school here. Is the free education really good? Do kids really outscore in IB diploma level from these schools? Comp99, are you potentially moving to Oz? Did you manage to find a job from Dubai? hi syl123, yes we managed to secure a job from here. we planned to move to Adelaide initially but due to no job response from there we are now moving to Melbourne. it is possible to get a job from here but i feel the prospective employers get put off by all the extra work they need to do for an overseas candidate, plus they can't see you face to face and also the 2 month notice period which is a norm in most companies in dubai. compared to this, they can get a local candidate in 1 months time and they can meet the candidate face to face before making up their mind. there is a possibility of finding work in australia from here..if you are experienced enough, bringing something new to the table and your job is in demand in the area you plan to move to. keep applying through seek.com.au and if you do get an interview , always stress on why you NEED to make the move and are really serious about the job. as they know that you are probably earning more than they can offer with tax and all. best of luck

Lots of questions; I will try to answer as many as I can. 1. What is a PR? Has your husband been offered a job that gets you all an Australian residence visa? Getting that is the hardest part, especially nowaday. 2. If you have this, I think it will be better to apply for work (for you) once you are there. What is your industry? Seek.com.au has jobs and is a commonly used job portal there. 3. Australian companies are like any in the world - some are family friendly and some are not. All offer things like maternity leave, but flex-hours etc. and dependent on the company. 4. Your chld can go to kindergarten or day care before starting prep, but those are really expensive. Many mothers do not work because if they did they would be working just to pay for nursery. Which state are you moving to? A PR is permanent residence visa valid for 5 years with right to work and live in oz with access to Medicare and public schools at the end of which you can apply for australian citizenship. That's what OP meant by migration. On a separate note..is 100,000 salary including super (before tax) enough to survive in a city like Sydney for two adults and two school going kids? What are your thoughts?

Australia is a very expensive place to bring up a family, but I presume you did your research before applying for a visa?? Obviously country and rural area's are much cheaper for housing than the major cities, but again depends on what job you do I guess. Obviously tax in Australia is high not sure what benefits you are entitled to but Australia seem to hand them out to anybody and then tax the people who work high paying jobs. Cost of living is much higher than here (except rent) water, rates, electricity, phone, internet, cars, fuel and food all much more than here. Once your child reaches 5 they are entitled to a free public school education but you will pay a huge amount before that in child care if you work, maybe again do your research by contacting child care centres in Australia where you intend on living, a simple google search will do the trick! I don't know what your visa is, but I presume it entitles you to medicare, the Australian health care system, again a simple google search will answer many questions as it does change as often as we change Prime Ministers.... As for looking for a job, I would apply once you get there and get settled as far as I know, you will have to attend interviews etc and companies in Australia would prefer to meet you face to face rather than a Skype call etc. Also I would be getting my child settled first before I begin to look for a job and also get a child care centre sorted first. Australia does not obviously have access to cheap house maids and nannies like here. What you pay here an hour in dhs for a maid service you will pay in $ in Australia if not more, 11 years ago in Australia I was paying 120 dhs an hour for a cleaning lady. Any way good luck!

Thanks AdventurerB for the suggestion. My husband has relocated to Melbourne. His job has ups and downs. It was the same here in Dubai too. The nature of his work forces me to look for a job. I am a Manufacturing engineer. Does Melbourne/Victoria state offer manufacturing jobs?
