has anyone lived in Egypt recently who can tell me what it is like? I know from the news the bad things, but how is it for expats?

my OT may be offered a job and looking very likely but we are at the stage of getting married in 4 weeks then looking at kids... therefore is it safe enough?

Are there nice areas to live? It would be Cairo...

Eek so much to think about!

Any help and advice would be grateful xx

If you have a Western degree, you can join the Cairo Scholars mailing list (google it) which is a great place to ask questions and get a feel for how people live there. I've lived in Alex for 5 years which is much more of a backwater than Cairo in terms of places to live and good school options - in Cairo I would live in Maadi or the eastern suburban/satellite city of Rehab, since New Cairo is comparatively driveable (and there are also a ton of schools there). But since traffic is so horrible, where you live will really depend on your work location or you will all regret it :)

Lone Star thank you very much... its looking more likely that we will go there... at the moment no kids but we will start pretty soon so will look at both... Ive heard we would need a driver rather than drive ourselves. I'm guessing a totally different life to Dubai but I'm hoping the expats are as social... :)

We are Brits and lived in Cairo for 2 years and it was brilliant. The Maadi British International school is such a truly lovely school that it is almost a reason to move t Cairo. If you have kids you live in Maadi and it is totally safe and nice. if you have no kids you live in Zamalik. the only bad thing about Egypt is traffic. Everything else is lovely. to get a feel for the community go to the CSA website in Maadi and it will tell you all you want to know. Its not clean and shiney like Dubai but it has soul
