Hello, Wondering if you have found some help, as my daughter has the same challenge and needs an Occupational therapist. Do you know also if there are some affordable OT, and also if insurance co...
We had a wonderful experience with Bakhtaver (Bakti) Ayrton at The Developing Child Centre. She did a thorough initial assessment, was clearly not out to get us to spend more money or schedule more lessons than we needed -- compared to other OTs I spoke to, she was the most calm about his needs and knew he could improve quickly. We scheduled two lessons per week, one private and one in a group - both had benefits. She gave him targeted exercises to do daily to strengthen his core and upper body, and taught him to join his handwriting in a very effective way which led to immediate improvements in his writing in terms of spacing, sizing and formation. We did the homework/home exercises faithfully so he had lots of home support. He's done very well since then and did not need to return after one summer of lessons. Our insurance didn't cover it, but the money we spent on Bakti was worth every penny.

When offering clothes or anything else, I just say, "I have some things that we no longer need, do you know anyone who would like to have them?" - that way it doesn't seem like an assumption that the person you're talking to would need them, just that they might know someone...

I can't believe a month has passed already! Since then, I got my fingerprints done at the police HQ, sent them off to the US by Emirates Post (first time for that, only cost 18dh), and took the Praxis II two Saturdays ago. The prints cleared a few days ago but I still have to wait until Feb. 10 to get the official score results. I think I did well.. I over-studied, mainly using the past papers they offer for sale and then researching the covered topics more thoroughly. Now I just have to send my transcripts to the state dept of education...

Careem is fantastic, safe and reliable. I book a car with them for my kids to get to school every day and have no complaints, the drivers are very polite and I can track their route through the app.

Most good international schools do. Gems schools (British/US curriculum) pay 4,750+, Taaleem schools pay more than 5,000, I've heard that Repton pays 7+ and Arcadia 6,5. Just email the HR of any school you're interested in to express interest and ask the salary.

By any chance, have you taken the Praxis II and have any recommendations for test prep books? (or one to sell?) I found a few that Magrudy's would deliver here, and some from Amazon that I could order through DesertCart.. I'm probably going to be testing Jan. 24!

I decided to go for a new one to eliminate delivery costs, and so I'd have a 1 year warranty + service at my home thereafter.. after calling around a ton of shops from Decathlon to S&S to BH, I bought a NordicTrack C200 online at Active Fitness Store and it has everything I wanted! (fan, place to put my book, adjustable cushioning, incline, low noise, good preset workouts, ifit compatible, etc). It just seemed like a safer route than buying used, since it's quite an investment, and their service by phone & delivery were really fantastic. activefitnessstore dot com.

I'm pretty sure George Mason/Virginia only require the Praxis exams, not state-specific exams. That's a big plus for me as I took the CSETs while in Cali but ultimately couldn't finish the other licensing requirements, so they were wasted! SAIS in Warqa might be too far for you, but a friend also recommended trying others like Ittihad School, Al Khaleej National, Philadelphia school, and Muwakeb.. any school that has an American curriculum but mostly Arab/non-native teachers, so they're more likely to be up for hiring a foreigner-in-training. Please let me know what you find out! I'll be looking around as well and considering my options, and I'll post back here with any new ideas or info.

I'm really glad that you've found Teach-Now to be rigorous! I wasn't sure how it would be. How many months are you into the program? George Mason's program is geared towards international educators, so it includes a lot of training on integrating ESL into the curriculum. I'm interested in the international elementary program, which also can lead to IB certification besides the state teaching license. If we live near each other, it would be great to be in touch. I live in Mirdif (close to SAIS and Warqa), are you anywhere near me?

Yes, many schools will hire an actual lead teacher without a state teaching license (for better or worse). You being a native speaker, educated abroad, makes you a great candidate for a lower-tier school. Sharjah American International School actually has a prior relationship with TeachNow as a method to get licenses for its teachers, so it might be your best bet! They have a campus in Warqaa and another in Sharjah. Let me know how it goes! Do a google search for "Are you A UAE Teacher In Search of a Teacher License" and you'll find links to posts on LinkedIn and Facebook explaining that. I feel sad about having to "train" in a lower-tier school instead of being in a great school with an amazing mentor teacher. But learning on the job is part of the experience :p

I hate Christmas too lol. Just don't do it. Calculate up how much money you'd be wasting on presents and cards and turkeys and flights and give it to a charity you believe in. Then if you feel the need, send an email out saying you gave donations this year in lieu of gifts. But don't let yourself be miserable over such a pitiful thing. Any of us who has the luxury of being able to sit here typing with food and a roof over our heads has no right to be pitying ourselves and our circumstances. Feeling down fine.. hating some parts of our life fine.. feeling estranged and far away from our families, fine. But those are all things very much in our power to change or at least address, compared to the millions of people whose passports and war-torn homelands provide them no such opportunity. We need to put our first world problems into perspective.

Where do you live? What are your interests, do you speak any other languages? You might be able to find a local community group on FB. I felt like you when I moved here last year, and started to take Arabic calligraphy classes at Dubai International Art Center.. that got me off to a great start! Made some nice friends, set up lessons at my house with another teacher afterwards.. which let me get to know more people close-by. Then this year I applied to work at a school as an assistant for special needs kids, which has been a great use of my time, very rewarding, and good preparation as I prepare to work in a better position next year. There are so many nice classes, workshops, learning opportunities all around.. gyms, trainings, etc. Besides applying to volunteer or work somewhere :) Just jump in and you'll find your way!

Hi Pixie, I'm in exactly the same boat as you :) Good schools here just have no incentive to compromise their system by having a trainee, with high-paying parents wondering why their kids are being taught by a student teacher. What I've been advised by teacher friends and plan to do is to apply to a lower tier, arab-run school that will hire me as an actual teacher, so I'm fulfilling my observation and student teaching requirements while actually working. Places like Mawakeb, Ittihad, etc... Mind if I ask which program you're doing? TeachNow/TeacherReady? I want to do George Mason's FastTrain program (which requires attending intensive summer courses in Virginia and leads to both a license + a M.Ed) but not sure it makes sense with the others costing so much less. I really want a proper induction program/mentor teacher here but have been told no such thing exists for Americans. GEMS schools have 2 licensing options that are acceptable within their system and Dubai/the UAE overall - TELLAL and the iPGCE - and provide a great mentor system where you can train in the classroom and gradually take over the teaching responsibilities by the end of the year. I work at a school now where a few TAs are doing that while working their TA job. But it's not really useful for Americans even though it's great training.

Just about a year and a half since I last posted, and we've been in 3 of the schools mentioned in this thread =D . Everything that was said here and "through the grapevine" about the School of Research Science (SRS in Warqaa, just below Mirdiff) has turned out to be incorrect, from our experience. It's a beautiful, fabulous school with highly trained British teachers for English subjects and a strong Arabic curriculum and Islamic culture. It's a strong education overall, and teachers are more-than-usually culturally sensitive. Dar al Marefa is not at all under the same management as SRS (I asked both schools!) - my son attended it last year and we found it weak in comparison with SRS, with teachers who were not very motivating or professional. The IB curriculum, as implemented there, was definitely not what we expected. The Schools of Creative Science chain (which started out in Sharjah with the UK curriculum International School of Creative Science, then added the US curriculum American School of Creative Science 3 years ago) opened 2 branches in Dubai this year - a British one in Nad Sheba and an American one in Barsha. I've heard good things about the ISCS in Nad Sheba, in terms of its curriculum, management, and overall atmosphere and quality of education education being significantly better than the Sharjah ISCS. I would not expect any American school in the Middle East to be very good unless it's run by actual Americans and part of a school network like GEMS/Taaleem/Esol Education that maintains high standards, because it's just too easy to abuse the flexibility of American curricular requirements to make a really disorganized school that doesn't accomplish much education at all. That is what we found at ASCS in Sharjah, before transferring to SRS. For Islamic nurseries, there is Ro'yati in Nad Hamar and Motor City. New ones this year in my area have been Creative Nest in Mizhar and Future International in Warqaa, both of which I've heard good things about. We have a son in Ro'yati and like it a lot.

It has nothing to do with accent or communication and everything to do with hedging their meager bets on the chance that people from democratic, developed countries are more likely to treat them as human beings than as slaves.

So sad :( I would definitely be willing to use my days to volunteer to teach them if I wasn't working full-time now (my own kids take up my time after school). Your idea about providing online learning is a good one -- maybe even some single or retired teachers abroad would be willing to volunteer. But would these families have reliable computers and internet access? I think there are a lot of women not working here, and I'm sure some sort of initiative could take off to provide them English conversation classes, reading and writing assistance... in-person is certainly best if possible. Better English skills could take them a long way in being able to use free online resources like the Khan Academy to study other subjects. I'll post about it in the Mirdiff Mums list since Sharjah is relatively close to us - maybe some women will be interested in volunteering and we can try to get in contact with families in this situation.

Hi, Where will you or your husband be working? You have to consider the commute to work as well as to school. My husband works in Media City, but despite him having a 45 minute commute daily we chose to live in Mirdiff because of the lower price of villas compared to almost any other place in Dubai. Our 3 bedroom is 130,000 with a nice big yard for the kids, which is the going rate here. So it depends on your budget. We don't live in a compound, but there are many compounds of villas and townhouses here and in other areas, and the kids in them play together, go to the shared pools, etc. Yes definitely, schools here are used to having a transient student population and you can join just about any time IF they have spots. We arrived in August last year and couldn't find spots for both kids in any schools we liked, so we put each in a different school and finally got a spot open to combine them at the one we preferred this year. With schools, what are your priorities? What is your budget? For us, we wanted a British curriculum school that also had a strong Arabic curriculum, and the only school that we were really convinced about in that respect was in Warqaa, just south of Mirdiff. So that was another big factor in our decision about where to live. I work in another British school ranked outstanding by the KHDA, Gems Royal Dubai School just north of Mirdiff, and it's a great school in every respect other than the Arabic department - so I wouldn't choose it for my kids. You also have to consider what sort of student population you would like your kids to be in - majority western expats, majority indians, majority arabs, etc. Take a look at the KHDA school inspection reports - they are great for giving you an overall picture of the schools you might be considering. https://www.khda.gov.ae/en/DSIB/Reports?i=3

Can anyone tell me more about the KHDA exams for teachers, or getting MOE approval to teach? I have a BA in Education from the US but have been a trailing spouse/sahm without recent experience, just started working as an LSA at a good school this year to get back in the market, and am considering applying for teaching jobs in the spring to teach next year. I want to get my paperwork in order pronto since getting my diploma attested in the US without being there cost quite a bit! I only have my BA attested so far - what else will I need for KHDA approval? Transcripts? I've heard they even ask for a high school diploma if your BA is <10 years old?? (I graduated in 2009). I'd like to be approved in my original subject area (elementary education, K-5) as well as Arabic B.

What did you end up doing? I've ordered a 5kg curriculum from the US which they shipped by USPS and have been waiting for it for 10 days.. Emirates Post assured me that I don't need a PO Box number of my own, and can just put the postal code of the nearest post office to me (in my case, Mizhar - 444001), and then pick it up from the desk. When I posted something to Turkey, they told me the same thing - just put that number as the return address. All of the postal office codes are listed on p. 23 of this document: https://www.epg.gov.ae/portal/_en/gallery/content83.pdf So is this true or is it all a lie designed to make me lose $100 of shipping and $300 of books :(

No naming and shaming schools, but my 8 year old has been in an IB PYP school this year (our first year in Dubai) and I'm not really impressed. I'm all for holistic, integrated education, I'm not expecting rote memorization, I value depth over breadth of coverage, but I really feel they've learned very little at all, and that their only "projects" have been teacher-assigned, copy-from-books-onto-posters types of activities with very little authentic research or student-driven learning and no themes into which basic skills are integrated. I've really had enough of hearing about the "types" of learners" if there's nothing to learn about at all! In comparison, my daughter in 2nd grade has been in a UK National Curriculum school using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and I've been really happy with the theme-based work they've done. For example, in one unit they studied the sinking of the Titanic and did little science activities about how boats float and wrote newspaper-style articles about it and used the number of passengers for Math etc etc... If any of you have kids in PYP years 2 or 3, can you give me an idea of what your kids have done this year so I can compare -- have they done any themes, any hands-on work (besides making posters!!), a full syllabus would be great :DD

Actually, most nurseries have refused to accept 1 day weekly, even if I'm willing to pay registration - they require a minimum of 2 or 3 days/week. Just checked MyGym and it requires parent participation until 3.25 years old. The only options I've found so far are Hummingbird at 80/hr and Kiddy Planet in Umm Suqeim at 40/hr or 120 for the day 8am-1pm (for some reason their Quoz branch doesn't allow drop-in) and Art Village which requires 500 registration and 170/day but includes meals.

We always did our visa runs at the Khasab (not Dibba) border crossing (past Ras al Khaima along the coast) instead of Hatta. It's basically taking Shaykh Zayed all the way north for about a 1.5-2 hour drive, and it was always an easy process.

My son did a trial session at IFA Uptown yesterday, and while it was professional and organized, I don't feel he got much of a workout (the main goal is to give him more cardio). He sweats more in karate! It's been a long time since I played soccer at his age, but I played for 12 years and I remember a lot more sprinting, running, etc than simply dribbling around. Should I try anything else? He'd really like track & field as an alternative - anything with more running and competition.

I'm researching this now for myself, so this is what I've got so far: Hummingbird nursery (under 2) #04-370-0449 and preschool (2 and older) #04-379-9800 in DIFC do offer casual (drop-off) rates of 80dh/hour and they operate from 7am-7pm. Quite high for 4 hours of babysitting (320dh), which is essentially what I'm looking for... so the search continues. KiddyPlanet in Umm Suqeim (15-20 min drive, since their Quoz location doesn't allow drop-ins) offers drop-in at 40dh/hr or 120 for the day 8am-1pm.

For any of you who've taken classes at DIAC or Ductac, are there any good drop-in nurseries or play centres nearby where I could bring my 2,5 year old son while I take a 3-hour class once a week? Nice, safe, supervised of course.... *Edited to add: the best option I've found so far is Kiddy Planet's Umm Suqeim branch at 40dh/hour or 120dh per day (8am-1pm) -- that's <10 minutes to Ductac coming or going, but pretty far from DIAC. Their al Quoz branch would be closer to DIAC but doesn't offer hourly care.

IFA seems organized and professional, if not a little painful at 90 per hour! I saw that Active at OIS was 1000 per term with only 45 min classes though (and seemed a lot more amateurish), so I guess it's not higher than normal. We were on tourist visas for months until our residence got approved - just drove the <2 hours to the Oman border crossing past Ras al Khaima, got the exit stamp on the UAE side, walked to the Oman side and got entry/exit stamps (they know that's why you're there), and walked back to the UAE side for a new tourist entry. Which of those soccer academies has a location closest to Mirdiff? My 8yo boy has been in karate for years and is quite strong and fast but has never played a team sport and is helpless with balls (hand-eye coordination... foot-eye coordination). So I want him to start a ball-related team sport in which there are other newbies too, if that's even possible! I've been really happy with Aspire Gymnastics in Mizhar for my 7yo daughter. Very professional and class size <8, and they have boys' classes too.

Thanks for the reassurance! We visited the Nissan showroom today and really liked the X-trail. The full option is amaaaazing with its panoramic sunroof and satnav but we need to save the 20,000 extra for my husband's car, so I'd be sufficing with a more basic option :) The 3rd seat in the back is really cramped for leg space, but worth having for the kids any time we have visiting guests etc, and collapses down totally for normal trunk use. Also visited Toyota where I found out that Rav4s here don't have 7 seats (they do in the US!), so that's a non-option anyway! The only thing I would really consider there is the Innova, because of the Fortuner's bad fuel economy. It's economic and practical (and in terms of style, I feel like a taxi driver already anyway with all of the shuttling around we do). At Kia I saw the Carens which is an additional 20,000 less than the basic X-trail, but however tempting the savings are, I found it really dinky. The Sorento there has more space than the X-trail at the same price but the gas mileage puts me off. The only thing left to consider is the Citroen C4 Picasso, but I've heard that Citroens don't fare well in GCC conditions - anyone know about that?

Is <500dh even a possibility for kids' glasses with a very strong prescription (-5.75, -4.75)? I wouldn't mind paying a lot if there was a chance of them surviving more than 3 months, but since I've buying at least 4 pairs per year due to Rx changes and breakage, I'd really like to find a place that has decent pairs for that much...

I'm looking for under 2,000dh and was thinking of the Silentnight Classical range but am open to any firmer mattresses. Would Dragonmart have good options? Should I consider two twin-sized mattresses or is that significantly less comfortable? And where can I find good 100%cotton bedding for that size as well?
