Sports in Hong Kong are a significant part of its culture. Due mainly to British influence going as far back as the late 19th century, Hong Kong had an earlier introduction to Western athletics compared to other Asia regions. Football, basketball, swimming, badminton, table tennis, cycling and running have the most participants and spectators. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department is a sub-section of Hong Kong’s Government and their aim is “to provide quality leisure and cultural services commensurate with Hong Kong's development as a world-class city and events capital.”


Free Outdoor Pitches & Courts:


Outdoor pitches/courts are provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in the urban area and the New Territories free of charge. These facilities include 3-a-side, 5-a-side and 7-a-side hard-surface soccer pitches, basketball, netball, volleyball, handball, gateball, badminton and tennis practice courts. Some of these courts can be used for large scale community events. Most of the venues are provided with floodlights for use at night time. Grass Pitches Available for a small fee:


Grass pitches are provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in the urban area and the New Territories. There are natural and artificial turf pitches for soccer, rugby, cricket, hockey, baseball, gateball activities. Floodlights are normally provided for use at night time.


Sport Centres:


Sports centres are provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in the urban area and the New Territories. The sports centre provides a wide range of indoor leisure facilities such as badminton courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, netball courts, tennis courts, squash courts, table tennis tables, Billiard Facilities, activity rooms, dance rooms, fitness rooms, sport climbing walls and etc. There are also stand alone badminton centre, squash centres, squash and table tennis centre, squash and tennis centre. Click here for a list of indoor sports centres sorted by district>>


Sports Grounds:


Sports grounds are provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in the urban area and the New Territories. There are track and field facilities in each sports ground for athletic training and competition.


Tennis Courts:


Both indoor and outdoor tennis courts are provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in the urban area and the New Territories. Floodlights are normally provided for outdoor venues for use at night time. There are also tennis practice courts that are half the size of a standard tennis court. For hire charges Click here>>


Water Sports Centres:


Surrounded by the sea, Hong Kong is a wonderful place for water sports. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has established five water sports centers in the New Territories and Hong Kong Island, namely the Chong Hing Water Sports Centre adjacent to the High Island Reservoir Sai Kung, Stanley Main Beach Water Sports situated at Stanley Main Beach, St. Stephen's Beach Water Sports Centre opposite Stanley Bay, Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Centre next to Main Dam of Plover Cove Reservoir, Tai Po, and the Jockey Club Wong Shek Water Sports Centre at Wong Shek Pier, Sai Kung.

Bowling Greens:


There are artificial and natural turf surfaces for outdoor bowling greens and artificial surfaces for indoor bowling greens. Bowls are provided in the venues for the hirers. Floodlights are provided for outdoor venues for use at night time.

Swimming Pools:


The Leisure and Cultural Services Department manages a total of 43 public swimming pool complexes in Hong Kong, of which 9 are on Hong Kong Island, 13 in Kowloon and 21 in the New Territories.
