Not that I know of Istilco. Maybe you could start a web page for your paintings and advertise on this and the "other" more active forum. There is a fab local artist (Panna Taher ?) who sells this way here. She doesn't advertise though just has the web site. Good luck. So wished Abs had a more arty community.

Hey there. I thought that my now 11 yo was Autistic. He didn't talk until he was 2, not even babble. He didn't smile at anyone no matter how much effort they put in. He was speechless and expressionless I swear until a bit after 2. Suddenly he started speaking full sentences really clearly. He was spelling out words he would see around the place at 3. Writing short notes to me as well. He was amazing. It was as though he was just waiting to get it all together before he made a sound at 2 and then whamo.... we couldn't shut him up. He has a really hi IQ but was just out of step with his speech and order of things. Like you I was getting concerned why he wasn't even babbling before 2. Had a few comments from people suggesting there may be a problem too. Do get any tests done that will make you feel comfortable about your childs development but don't panic yet. He could just be waiting to get it all together before he starts blurting out full sentences and will from then on, drive you mad. Good luck.

Hi, There is a smallish selection in the basement of Carrefour Airport Rd. There are many with a much bigger range on Island, behind the Gold Souk and Madinat Mall (cnr. 7th and 4th kinda thing). The shops are sprinkled through there. Just drive around and see. The Green Branch is in that same area but fronts the 7th. That has some unusual crafty things and a good yarn selection. Happy hunting. xx

Hi. The hardware shop at the Pink Shops (Jotun advertised on shop front) has a handyman service. Bo into the shop and quite often you can take the man home with you to do the job there and then. They seem pretty good to me too. Good luck.

Have you looked at Brighton? It just seems so promising and has a lot of experience to implant in the new school here from its roots in the UK. BISAD just seemed to have so many "issues" and people complaining about it still. If it is the only school that you have places for, then you are best to take the offer and you could move your children later if it doesn't work out. Good luck.

No, we didn't have A/C on 18 all the time! We had the 4 bed atrium villa. We had 1 on up stairs and 1 on downstairs all day during summer and then any extra room we may have been in. At night just the 2 bedrooms we occupied plus our maids room. We had them set on 23. This was the rediculous problem with Dimarco billing. People could be away for a whole month with no a/c usage and get a consumption bill! There seemed to be no reasoning with the billing. Some people had got 0 charge apparantly too although they used their a/c normally. There is another thread on another forum about all the discrepancies with dimarco billing. We live in a little compound of 4 villas now with reasonable charges, really nice neighbours and feel much more a part of the community. Raha had lovely gardens to walk the dogs but it really was not worth the high rents (260,000) plus the chilling costs. There is so much more now to choose from in Khalifa A. We are only paying 180,000 now for this larger villa and we are making a nice garden (lots of big pots to take with us if we ever have to move again!). Funnily enough too, our 11 year old has more kids in this little compound than he had the whole time at Raha. We chose Raha initially for the convenience too. The build quality (and nice bathrooms that I do miss) was pretty good. It was a good way to spend the first year here for us (albeit expensive). There are much better choices out there now I think.

Hi. If you are looking at Raha Gardens then be prepared for exorbitant chilled water costs for A/C! We were paying around 2,500dhs per month during summer for chilled water. That is in addition to water and electricity charges. We now live in a bigger villa in a compound of just 4 and pay less than 1000dhs for all our power including A/C. I Can't remember how much water costs but not unreasonable I don't think. Do rethink Raha....... it can cost you around 20 - 25000 dhs per year just for chilled water.

Please consider alternatives to the pet shops. Even if the rabbits are treated okay, buying any animal from the pet shop supports the business and so many dogs and cats bred for the pet stores are mistreated. Further, the dogs and cats that are used as breeders to supply the pet shops live a horrible life. Consider contacting the Strays of Abu Dhabi (SAD) http://straysofabudhabi.com/. They are a dog rescue but have rehomed cats and rabbits and even a turtle and a baby chick! People contact them all the time about animals they need to rehome so they may be to connect you to someone even if they don't currently have a rabbit needing a home. You also may consider posting a notice at your school or other AD schools. So many families move in and out of the country and there are often people looking to rehome rabbits, guinea p i g s, hamsters and turtles. Good luck in finding the perfect pet for you family! edited by Sarah R on 20/05/2011 edited by Sarah R on 20/05/2011 edited by Sarah R on 20/05/2011 Thank you Sarah, that is what I meant to say too. You expressed it so much better than me. ;-)

I don't know what to think of that pet shop at Mazyad mall. I have been in there several times and feel so sad for the puppies and cats, who can be in there for weeks on end. I have asked the boys working there if the animals are taken home at night time and exercised during the day and apparently not. They get a little walk in the car park each day only. I don't think the breeders who supply the pet shop are necessarily decent breeders either. Would like to know much more about their ethics before supporting any pet shop here. There are so many animals desperately needing homes here, why not consider a rescue kitten (much more interactive and intelligent than a rabbit) or phone Falcon Hospital to see if they have any rabbits at the moment. There are lots of people working really hard to improve animal welfare here (and my God, does this place need some animal education). If we all just do a little to help support and promote this, we can all help make a difference. By not attending animal circus's to not supporting pet shops selling live animals, to adopting a rescue animal. I'll hop off my little soap box now..... just had to put my tuppence worth in ;-)

Hey BB, What round about is really busy in KCA? I am so enjoying living here and haven't noticed the traffic ever really too bad (other than in RIS school itself, ****** nightmare!). I think the roads cater for peak times well. It will be better when there is an entry from the Abu Dhabi/Dubai Rd into KCA that doesn't go past the golf club (speedhumps drive me mad!). The lack of footpaths is not very pedestrian friendly here I agree. Not so pleasant walking the dogs but other than that, mostly all good. xx

When we have visitors, the routine is to go to the grand Mosque first, which is rather amazing and then for high tea at the Emirates Palace. There is also a Mesopotamia exhibition on at Al Manarat on Saadiyat Island. There is a nice cafe there too as well as a history and future of Abu Dhabi display (very well done) ran by TDIC. Quite worth a visit I think. If you drive to Saadiyat via Yas Island, you could do a bit of a detour through Yas showing the F1 track, Ferrari world and the lovely hotels that are there now. Evening is lovely in the rooftop bar (can't remember what it's called) of the Yas Hotel. That is pretty much our routine when we have visitors! Hope you enjoy your time with your guests. xx

Hello, propertyfinder, Abu Dhabi is a good site for real estate. We were looking only a couple of months ago for properties and were considering properties around the area of Brighton College. I think your budget for a 4 bedroom may not stretch to what is available there. Khalifa City A (where we have decided to live) is not too far away and so much cheaper. You could find something nice here for that money. The school will more than likely have a bus service which could save the drive for you. Check out property finder and look what is available for your money in Khalifa City A. Happy hunting.

I saw this promo too and was considering it. Maybe the people who had the surgery from there are no longer able to read this board????? Seriously though, I think most surgery here would be pretty safe. Maybe put this same question to the Dubai board. I too would be interested in the responses.

Hi Bella A maid is great for the reasons you mentioned. Great if you are going on hols and you will have someone to look after your cats and keep them company. There probably is not much difference between paying a proper cleaning service and employing a maid yourself (depending on the hours of course). If you were to employ a maid that is already here, it will cost you about 5000dhs to do the visa stuff and health insurance. You need to provide her with a room and food (or give her a budget to buy her own food). She should go home once a year for 1 month with holiday salary. The starting rate for Philippino maids is 1200dhs per month. As she fits into your life and things are going smoothly you could always give her a raise. I am not sure if it is a requirement or not but, we put 100dhs aside per month. She will collect that when she winds up working for us. It works well because it is a forced savings plan for her too. Just a guideline anyway. Have a trial period if you can to see if the fit is right beforehand. Hope you find the solution you are looking for.

I would love to be able to squirt the windows down with the hose but we are still not connected to mains water and have limited water. We keep running out, literally. We have gone a few nights in a row without having showers, my husband is totally peeved with the whole deal! The toilet is clear of rubble, the story is that they need to move the toilet out from the wall further so as it will flush, it is a design fault. So we will have the downstairs toilet sitting in the middle of the room....... will look great I am sure. The whole upstairs tiles are so badly stained and chipped that they need to replace the whole floor...... we are supposed to live here while they are doing this. I have just asked if they could please just carpet it all instead, waiting on their response. Between, A/C 's not working, hot water systems not working, doors that don't close, taps that leak. We have been here for 4 weeks now so just about over this. Not happy.

Lol BB........ unbelievable the build quality here. It is so hard to settle because workman keep traipsing through. Nothing like I was expecting for a brand new villa. My maid has fallen pregnant and she is back home in the Philippines now so I am doing it all on my own. Not the way I imagined it. It is a BIG job and not even our house to be putting this much time and money into finishing it. Grrrrrrrr!

Hi AnnC If you want to be within 30mins commute time of work then Raha Gardens in Khalifa City A would be off your list. It is at least 30 mins travel time plus in peak times. You would be best looking at places "on Island" if you want to stay within your commute time. Google propertyfinder, Abu Dhabi and search areas such as Khalifa Park, Khalidya, Al Bateen, Mushrif. You will get an idea of what is available in your budget and they have photos too. Dubizzle is another site worth having a look at too. Most places seem to accept pets. Other people will be more helpful with specific compounds "on Island". I am living in Khalifa City A so am not that familiar with the specific compounds "on Island" sorry. Happy moving. Hope it all goes smoothly for you. It should be really nice and hot by time you get here next month....... yikes! Just expect not to be going out much during the day except to malls for the next few months. The weather has been beautiful though for the past 7 months, just starting to hot up now. Good luck. xx

It is so scary how easily a situation can get out of hand. We seem to have to tread on egg shells all the time encase someone retaliates in this way. I wonder what went on for the men to have been harassing her while driving before the "obscene gesture"? Brilliant journalism as always, nothing is ever well reported.

Ahhhhh Mimi, another Perth gal hey and sadly for us both, we around the same age group too probably ;). Can't believe how well the Wiggles have done tho. INXS started up in Perth too I think. It is amazing considering how small Perth is and the amount of talent it has produced. The late Heath Ledgar too.

They used to play in our local pub in Perth as the Cockroaches (I think that was their name??) about 25 years ago. They never did anything much as a pub band. They have certainly found their niche now though.

The local families tend to have a driver but I don't think many expats do. Maybe you could check in the local rags in Situations Wanted to get an idea of salary and how to hire.

Hello, Our school has recommended Dr Karen from the American Clinic. She does very thorough reports too apparantley for educational adivice etc.. Dr Yousef from the same clinic prescribes the meds. Unfortunately you will not get the same high level of expertise and choice of medications as you would in a Australia or similar but there is some help here. Strattera seems to be the only prescription they deal with here for ADD or ADHD. See how you go anyway. Good luck. xx
