GreenQueen - yes that is absolutely correct and that is the procedure I followed with DS. I'm a US born citizen but for the most irritating technicality i couldn't have his birth registered at the US Embassy here so i got him an immigrant visa (issued by the US embassy in AD) just before i was travelling back to the US. he entered with that visa and i went to a passport office in NYC and he had his passport 2 days later!! it's a painful process with paperwork, but it was so worth it!

I used Cheeky Monkeys last year and they were fantastic! it was for first birthday for my DS and there were lots of kids of different age groups, the Cheeky Monkey entertainer managed to keep everyone happy! it was so relaxed and friendly, I never had to worry about what the kids were up to. I'm going to use them again this year for DS's 2nd birthday!

Hi Smilies - I play quite a bit of golf and was playing before i moved out here. There really isn't much choice in Dubai in terms of ladies golfing clothing sadly. Golf House is pretty dire, I've found a few interesting things at the Emirates golf club, but it all goes so fast so you need to get there when shipment arrives which is impossible to predict. The Montgomerie used to have a decent range of clothing but it's gotten a little too multicolor for my taste however, there are a few staple classic shorts / skirts and t-shirts. Overall, not much choice, I have still been using the items of clothing that i bought before I moved out here!

After looking at quite a few nurseries, I ended up choosing Oasis. I felt that the level of care and attention was really good. I also liked that the place was always neat and tidy and there was always someone cleaning something or the other! Anyway, I've had my DS there for now over a month and we both love it. He loves the environment, the attention the teachers give him, the fun he has with all the variety of activities and I love the fact that I get a detailed account of his day when I pick him up, that they are so flexible and understanding with our needs and that they really are trying hard to help him settle, which he has done quite well! DS is 18 months and he goes in the afternoons. I recommend it.

what a lovely thing to do Frances...My DS was born in November 2010 and I really wanted to breastfeed him. Unfortunately, it proved to be much more difficult and painful then I had ever imagined. If it were not for 2 breastfeeding counsellors there is no way I would have continued breastfeeding him until he was 7 months old. I think it's a great start to life I gave him and I owe that to the wonderful lactation consultants who helped. Paula Miller and Cecile de Scally both helped me at different times and they were both great help.

I feel your pain...I have taken advice from Cecile on sleep training and I assure you it does work, hang in there. 16 months is not an easy age to be doing this as he will have a lot more awareness but it is doable. I think you need to be persistent and do it for at least 3 days. When I put down my DS, I always made sure he was fed, changed and not crying. If he started to cry, I would leave him for at least 10 minutes. Generally after 5 minutes he would stop crying only to start again a little later. I knew that was his way of trying to fall asleep. If after 10 min he still cried and I picked him and he stopped then I knew there was nothing "wrong" with him and he just wanted to be picked up !! Only once did I pick him up and he just wouldn't stop crying and then i figured something was wrong and sure enough, he had a really dirty diaper!! Look - just keep at it. I know a few other mums who have followed this method, it works and the joy of being able to put your little one down without the rocking, holding, patting ect once he's sleep trained, will make it well worth the effort. Good luck.

oh yes, sounds most familiar! I didn't put on too much weight when pregnant but was ravenous when I was breastfeeding and I think I put on a couple of kilos just because of the constant hunger. The "breastfeeding is supposed to help you loose weight" didn't work for me at all -:( That said, you need the calories to produce the milk, so not much you can do about it.

Miss Smt - I really feel for you! I was 10 days late with my DS in November last year and I tried everything: acupuncture, raspberry tea leaf (up the dose towards the end), ate loads of pineapple, tried squatting as much as possible, went for looong walks, swam everyday and even gulped down castor oil...I did all of this during the last 10 days and nothing happened. In the end I had to get induced, which in retrospect I regret because it was painful and as there was no health concerns, I should have just left my baby to come on his own time. My advice is to try all of the above, I don't know that there is a sure method but I have heard of a lady who told me that castor oil helped her. The lady who recommended me to my acupuncturist in Dubai told me that acupuncture had helped her with speeding up labor.... but to be honest, every body is so different not sure if there is a ready made solution for all! Good luck !!

you will find a decent variety of strollers (including maclarens) at the Mothercare in Dubai Mall... other options are just kidding in Al Quoz but I don't know that they do light strollers. Mothercare in Dubai Mall is your best bet.

DS slept fine in our room in his moses, until he turned 4 weeks old. Around that time he started growing out of it (he's a tall baby) and I used to find him in the morning with his little legs dangling out! That scared me so I moved him into his cot in his room and he has been sleeping there ever since. I think I may have left him with us longer if he hand't grown out of his moses basket. I didn't sleep a wink the first night when I moved him into his cot in his room on his own but he was just fine and slept through. He is now 5.5 months and I struggle sleeping with him in the same room, he makes all these little grunting noises and shuffles so much it wakes me up:)

never seen that before...yes wait until the morning and see what the diaper looks like then, if still odd then go see pediatrician. Perhaps something you ate (sine exclusively b/fed baby)?

Saw both the Buzz and the Cameleon at Mothercare Dubai Mall yesterday and also the shop next to the Mamas and Papas in Dubai Mall (forget what it's called). Finally, you always have Just Kidding option. They are always well stocked in both brands.

Goodness - Reading this thread reminds of all the hassle my meddling MIL caused and she lives miles and miles away from us (thank god!)... DS is only 4 months old and she's already telling me to think about number 2! I must say, it used to upset me so much and whilst it still does, I have turned my time with her into a personal challenge. I smile and just nod or say non committal things like "that's interesting" or "let's see". Don't let her affect you too much (I know easier said than done) because that could eventually affect your milk supply if you are stressed / upset. And finally: DO NOT be coerced into topping up with formula. If you want to breastfeed, that's your choice and let a medical professional tell you that you don't have milk if that is actually the case! Grrr MILs so annoying the world over!

Thanks Clairehdp for the link and the advice. What's the going rate for a nanny then? and how do I find a trained nanny? All the ads I see are for nanny / maids.

I've been looking for a nanny for my 2 month old son for the last 6 weeks...and its been a nightmare. I generally select candidates based on personal recommendations in the Classifieds on EW or via emails from friends who know of a family leaving and recommend their nanny. The first nanny I interviewed showed up at my house, went through the interview, was pleasant and engaging and then at the end of the interview tells me that she wants to find a a family that live in Jumeirah because that's where all her friends live. Why she didnt' tell me that when she found out my address wasn't in Jumeirah is a mystery. Then there were a few who didn't show up at all. A couple of them never asked anything about my family or my son but were interested in how many days off they were going to get, how often I'd fly them home ect Fed up with the whole process, I went through an agency (Nannies Dubai) and the first candidate I selected called me up and asked for an interview on the same day. I agreed and about 15 min before the scheduled time for the interview, she texts to say that she has a cough /cold and can't make it... odd since when I spoke to her 2 hours before, she was in fine form and keen to meet me... This isn't just a moan, I wanted to know if there are other mothers out there who have had similar difficulties.... I am asking for my nanny to look after my child, no housekeeping or cleaning. She has her own room + bathroom. And we are offering a starting salary of AED 1,800 which I understand to be a good market rate. Would be interested in any thoughts others may have...anything I should do differently??
