Thank you so much for the replies! i think i'm too faint-hearted to give my mom an injection :) but you are right, i should try to learn how to do it. it's difficult for her to give it to herself in terms of maneuverability, as she suffers from joint pains i will try speaking to a dr. before she arrives, and would definitely try the nursing agencies. thank you all again!

That's the thing silvnet, I do not do a 'freelance' job, as I'm working on project basis. I go to the office everyday, just for 6 hours a day instead of 8 or 9. The only reason I have a 'freelance' contract is because there's no other legal contractual framework for me to work on part time basis. I'm ok with not having medical insurance or sponsorship, but what I don't see as reasonable is not having any sick, maternity or annual leaves, and basically the company could terminate me at any point of time. I was hoping this could change soon :)

Hi, i heard sometime back - on Dubai Eye - that UAE was considering introducing part time labor law, which would be great for many people including working moms! i have a 'Freelance' contract which does not entitle me to sponsorship, annual leaves, medical insurance..etc. and that's because i chose to work 6 hours a day. i was wondering if any of you ladies can verify/ or has an update on this? i'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks

Hello moms, So i'm having a horrible time trying to get my child a school place for FS1. I paid a fortune n application fees for the GEMs institution only to find myself with no school place for next year and not even a prospect of a place on the following years. So my question is, will enrolling her in a GEMs nursery really givr us a priority for our school of choice (WIS in our case)? I really hate having to move her from her nursery (which we love) to one of their nurseries only to be faced with same nightmare again next year! Thanks

Wendopia: I know what you mean. I still have a headache since her first birthday, and it was not last minute! :) It's her first Dubai birthday, and i have no recommendations whatsoever. Thanks for the list, it's very comprehensive! Best of luck :)

yes that's been our experience with 'little' Spinneys - the one in Barsha 2 is the same! A minor mark up admittedly, but it adds up! We only go there if we're out of milk. Everything adds up in Dubai! :) My observation so far is that Geant is the cheapest place to do your grocery shopping. The Union Cooperative might be cheaper in fruits and veggies, but i'm not sure about the other items.

Hi JJMagrudy, I live in Springs 1, there are actually 2 pools there. The one near the entrance is much nicer and more popular than the other one. The nice thing about springs 1 is that it's smaller and cozier than the other springs. I never noticed that the Meadows Spinney's is more expensive than the other one. That's strange! In any case, you always do your big grocery shopping at Geant, it will take you no more than 15 mins to be there.

Thank you ladies for your replies :) spongemonkey: Thank you, i did notice that some people around here tend to jump to conclusions and make judgements when you ask such questions. and i really don't understand the reason, since the whole idea behind this forum is to give advice based on hands on experience to each other. the reason i'm asking is that some friends told me they pay their maids AED 1000 (sometimes even less), while some people here quote figures as high as 3000. so for someone like me it's a bit too confusing, and i do not want to be neither unfair nor too naive with the maid's salary. i just want to pay a fair wage without being taken advantage of. so if i understand correctly, the whole sponsorship process costs around 10,000, and then you pay 5,000 every year?

sorry to tell you this, but it really all depends on which side of the bed your examiner woke up on that morning! the first time i took the test was with a really cranky lady, she was extremely picky and made me really nervous..she failed everyone who took the test that day! Next week, my examiner was a real cheerful guy, he passed me and the other girl in the car although she crossed over to the wrong side of the road and was going to get us all killed by heading straight towards a truck coming from the opposite side! it all doesn't make any sense. Maybe it would help if you knew the words for Right "Yameen", Left "Yasaar" and Straight "Seeda" ? Sorry there isn't much anyone can do to help , it all depends on your luck with your examiner.

i thought the post its about the mercedes car, SLS :). joking aside, its a big deal all over europe this subject but i think its little bit over reacted. If we should worry about everything we do or use in our life the we will leave in a cave(no sun exposure, therefore no skin cancer),eat from our own garden(no hormons in the food) and walk instead of useing cars(no more pollution).basically no life! Wow..thanks ladies for all the replies :) I agree with you that we can not worry about everything or we will not live at all. However, making informed decisions about the products you buy can make a difference - even a small one- to the quality of your life ..especially if you can find alternatives that are commercially available and not hyper-expensive tbh, i don't believe any commercials about what products are supposed to do or what they have or have-not in them ..so i thought that asking moms who've done their homework is a better way to go :)

My understanding is, if the airbag goes out, then this automatically brings the car value to next to nothing. 1 Really? is that true? i guess so, cause it means that the car had a serious accident.

Absolutely you must report it to the police and frankly, I'd go to 7days too. If air bags deploy, it means the car is totalled - you are right. Is there any idea where the car was "repaired?" What a scheme - you buy cars that are totaled and pay for them as 'scrap metal' - basically nothing. Then you take them to your friend who "fixes them up" enough to sell as if they are legitimate cars and you sell them! It would be a brilliant plan - except you are putting cars on the road that are serious hazards both to the occupants and the cars around them. Definitely report this - there maybe others who have gotten sucked in as well. guinness, we seriously believe he might've done this before. My husband tried to call him many times, and when he finally picked up (after my husband sent him a message saying he'll bring the police to his door), he said we can not prove anything and that the best he can do for us is give us the contact of scrap cars dealer who can buy it back from us! btw, what is '7 days'? is it an insurance company? sorry, we're still new here :)

But that's what I said before. If you can prove that the vehicle has been in an accident and prove that there is no police report, then you should be able to report him for fraud - because you CANNOT repair a car WITHOUT a police report! He can get into trouble for that alone. Go and talk to the police and get a reputable garage to confirm what you've said and write up a report on the car. Chocs this seems like a great idea, i think it might actually work. Thanks!

Sorry Binkie to hear about your story. My neighbour had exactly the same experience as you and he has spent 3 months fighting his case. He returned the car and got his money back. Very long story but this is a pro scam and very common. Can't say more on a public forum. edited by speena on 23/08/2011 Thanks Speena :) I'm interested to know about this story pls if you can share some details. It might help in our case. We're not willling to let it go that easily. We're only here for a couple of months now, but we heard about too many rip off stories.

Hmm... so have the air-bags been replaced or not? If they have been, by a specialist and are therefore ready to deploy again in the case of a crash, then what's the problem? I thought from your previous posts that the chap had just had the facings replaced but the airbags were missing/ not ready for use. The mileage thing is dodgy, if it has been fiddled, but hey, again... Are there any service records that show it? Previous ownership records? I don't know if the RTA log the mileage every time it's registered... I don't know. My gut feel is that you just have to accept that you unfortunately bought a duff car and if you want to make any use of it, you'll have to stump up the cash to fix it. I really sympathise, but in this country where even retailers can sell you something and refuse to give your money back on faulty merchandise, I don't think it's even worth bothering pursuing this (and I'm usually one to pursue things!) Thanks ladies for all your input! My understanding is, if the airbag goes out, then this automatically brings the car value to next to nothing. There are no service records and no police report to prove anything because he deliberately avoided going to the service centre to cover his tracks. I'm trying to gather from your input if there's anything that can be done to prove our case, We accepted the fact that we might have to write off the car value, but we can not really accept that this jerk can get away so easily! edited by binkie on 23/08/2011

I'm afraid that in the case of classifieds and private sellers, it's very much a case of buyer beware. It's true that you saw all the documents - that weren't falsified - and could only make your judgement on that, but if you're preparing to fork out a wad of cash, it's worth running background checks before handing it over. How did you come to realise the damage? I am amazed (but not) that the car passed the RTA test... if anything, that's the bad point, as they obviously didn't flag anything up. I also don't think on the basis of what he did you can say that he's a professional scammer. Dishonest, yes, but he obviously had the crash, wanted to flog the car and patched it up at minimal cost so that a willing punter wouldn't look any further than the bodywork. This kind of thing happens all the time when you're buying/selling houses - quick lick of fresh paint and new flooring can hide all kinds of things. I do sympathise, but basically, you get the car you pay for. If you want to sell it on, try the classifieds! [evil emoticon'> i have to admit it was a bit of a hasty decision, not because of the price which was actually on the higher side even for a car in a much better condition, but because my husband is a fan of that particular model :s Anyways, The reason we're thinking he has to be a pro is the way he played the whole thing, he went out of his way to go to repair shop that could replace the airbags so all of this would not show in the car record at the certified service centre. Oh, and we also found out that he manipulated the car meter. Maybe it's just me, but there has a point after which you stop being just dishonest, but you become a real crook!

Sorry, no help here, but how do you and the dealership know it's been in a serious accident? well, when we realized there was something seriously wrong with the car we took it to the dealership for a proper evaluation (something we should've done before we bought the car of course). They lift the car up and check the motor works and things like that. I'm no expert but when a car has a bent chassis and the two airbags deployed, then it must've been in a serious accident :(
