Thank you for responses. This question is on behalf of a friend and I'm trying to reassure her, but I think she needs to seek advice.

Tiddlywink, We did the move for the same reasons < education> however we try to create what we call ' Best Of Both!' We go back out for all the holidays and hubby comes back as and when he can. We have kept the house in DXB and our lovely lady, as she is needed hugely when we are all together! The last thing I want to do on the holidays is clean....I do that all day long here!!! And when we aren't there, she runs the house for hubby! X edited by snoop on 13/03/2012 Interesting Snoop, thanks for sharing :-)

Thanks again for the useful responses which have been very helpful :) It's a relief if we can keep our residency visas valid and keep the maid on. SueB, yes I will draw up a list of new jobs. Good idea. For those who have expressed their opinions so freely, our maid has a separate entrance to her room and has lived here for many years. She has many friends in the area and this is her [i'>home[/i'>! So it's not about having somebody to cook for DH rather than him get a take away (!!) and nor is it about DH not needing a maid (though we will be the judge of that, thanks). It's about us having a [i'>responsibility[/i'> to somebody who lives with us in our home, and who manages things day to day. We dont care if we pay her to do very little every day - rather that that find her a new home that she may or may not like, or send her home (!) and then pay an agency maid to come in 2 mornings a week and work like a trojan for very little pay. Our maid is a person not just a cleaning service that can be changed without batting a fluttery eyelash.

Thanks AmericanFamily3 and Summerdream for your helpful repsonses :) Re cancelling redisency visas, I assumed that if we left Dubai to go back home that we would have to cancel our residency visas? Is that not the case? I assumed it was a legal duty to cancel them, but really I dont know. :\: We will be back in Dubai for school holidays whilst DH is living here. I'm balancing our options at the moment. Our maid would be devastated to leave the home she has lived in for several years, so if we can avoid that all the better.

It depends on the school. British curriculum schools had a last change date of sometime in January (I know because mine child moved this term), but for other schools it is different. I suspect that you may be too late to move this year.

I hear you all! My DH works late every night. The kids dont see him most nights - not once this week have they seen him - and now it's the weekend and he's still at work.... I wonder what on earth is going through his head - his health and his family life is suffering. I've tired in vain to promote a balance, but it's impossible. He was an hour late for our date this week... He is simply married to his WORK. End of! It's our 12th wedding anniversary on Sunday... 12 years I've put up with this (well, actually that's not strictly true as I did leave him after 9 years for this very reason.... We got back together as I foolishly thought things would change! Boy was I wrong!) Simple answer I realise now is, take it or leave it....He'll never change. Sad but true. But the "good" news is that you are not alone!!!!

Could somebody please explain what we need to have OSN for the TV? Do they supply sport and movies? We currenlty have the most basic TV package with Etisalat, but we want to upgrade to movies and sports. Having had a persistant man come knocking this evening trying to get us to sign up to eLife I see only bad reviews and so figure we need to avoid this plan like the plague! But how do we get OSN? Do we keep the etisalat TV and subscribe for OSN that way? We use etisalat phone and internet so and are happy with them... Do we need a satelite dish or just a box fro OSN? Sorry for really thicko questions but we we on Du and it was easy, but then we moved to a different area... Thanks
